- Chapter 6 - Name: "I Can’t Exactly Call You YY, Can I?"
“What… what are you doing?”
Jiang Tan’s tone was dry, her question bordering on stating the obvious.
The woman looked up at her, pursed her lips, and said, “I felt like I needed to do something.”
Doing nothing made the woman feel uneasy.
Jiang Tan: “…”
She hesitated, words catching in her throat, before finally placing the takeout she had brought back onto the table. “Stop doing that. You’ve probably never done this kind of work before.”
Jiang Tan didn’t even need to guess; she just knew. After all, even in her own case, she had never touched a mop before her family went bankrupt.
“I’m learning how to do it,” the woman said with a hint of stubbornness.
Jiang Tan: “…Put it down for now and come eat.”
Seeing this, the woman stopped insisting. She put down the mop, washed her hands thoroughly, and returned to the dining table. Looking at Jiang Tan’s appearance, she couldn’t help but say, “Do you want to… take a shower first?” She added at the end, “I’ll wait and eat with you.”
The main reason was that Jiang Tan looked even grubbier now than she had this morning. The dirt on her black T-shirt was glaringly obvious. After a long day of labor, even though the current temperature wasn’t overly hot, she had clearly been sweating; the hair at her temples was slightly damp, and there were sweat stains on her shirt.
Jiang Tan looked down at herself. “Better not. I’ll wash after eating so I don’t get the smell of food on me right after a shower.”
Hearing her say that, the woman didn’t press further. She sat down quietly and helped Jiang Tan take the food out of the containers.
There was significantly more food this time than at lunch, though it was clearly less refined. Some containers had two different dishes packed together, causing the flavors to mingle.
Jiang Tan was already starving and didn’t stand on ceremony, lowering her head to eat rapidly. Compared to her wolfing down the food, the woman across from her ate in a much more elegant and refined manner.
However… that didn’t change the reality that her appetite was even larger than Jiang Tan’s.
Jiang Tan watched, somewhat dumbfounded, as the woman ate every bite with such grace—as if she weren’t eating fast food but a Michelin-starred meal. Even though each bite was small, the total amount she consumed was substantial.
She looked at the woman skeptically, wondering where all that food actually went. She herself ate a lot because of the physical labor, but the person opposite her shouldn’t be doing any heavy lifting, right?
Noticing Jiang Tan staring at her, the woman paused for a moment. She had been about to pick up a piece of fried fish for herself, but thinking Jiang Tan wanted it, she silently placed the fish into Jiang Tan’s bowl.
Jiang Tan: “?”
“Just eat your own. If I want some, I’ll grab it myself,” Jiang Tan said.
Although the food at the construction site was decent, they clearly wouldn’t give out too much of a main meat dish; there were only two pieces of fried fish in total.
“Um, then why were you… looking at me?” By the end of the sentence, the woman’s voice grew smaller.
Jiang Tan was choked up. She couldn’t very well voice her internal questions directly; the woman was, after all, a girl and likely thin-skinned.
“Um… I was thinking about where you’ll go,” Jiang Tan said.
Hearing this, the woman stopped eating and looked up at her, seemingly wanting to know what she was thinking.
“Do you really not remember anything at all?” Jiang Tan asked, unwilling to give up. She was mostly feeling a bit panicked; anyone would feel panicked at the thought of suddenly having to be responsible for someone else’s life.
The woman shook her head. “I remember nothing, and nothing feels familiar.”
“Can I not stay here?”
The woman’s follow-up question plunged Jiang Tan into silence. Finally, she looked around the room. “It’s quite obvious that this place isn’t exactly a great destination.”
The woman ignored that comment and continued, “There are two rooms in this apartment. I can sleep in the other one.”
Jiang Tan: “…But I only rented this one room. The other one is locked by the landlord. Who knows when it might be rented out to someone else.”
Upon hearing this, the woman was silent for a moment. “Are you very poor?”
Wait, don’t you think that question is a bit offensive?
Jiang Tan felt speechless for a second. “Isn’t that obvious? Who would live here if they weren’t poor?”
The seventh floor with no elevator! That point alone was enough to scare off countless people. Add to that how old the building was, and that was the only reason the rent was so cheap.
“I will earn money in the future,” the woman said, looking into Jiang Tan’s eyes with a serious expression. “Besides staying here, I don’t know where else I can go.”
Jiang Tan stuffed a mouthful of rice into her mouth and muttered vaguely with her eyes downcast, “But I’m an Alpha.”
Even though they were both essentially women, there was still a clear distinction in this world. An Alpha and an Omega with no relationship living together was clearly inappropriate.
The woman hesitated for a moment at Jiang Tan’s words. Finally, she reached up to touch her own gland. “You’ve already marked me anyway, haven’t you?”
Jiang Tan didn’t even have time to swallow her rice. she looked up with wide eyes, and if it weren’t for her last shred of self-control, she would have spat the food out.
Technically, that was true, but it was a special circumstance, not her being predatory!
“That was just a temporary mark! At this rate, it will fade on its own in a month,” Jiang Tan emphasized.
“I don’t care.” The woman finally settled the matter. Compared to a questionable reputation, wasn’t having a place to stay more important right now?
Jiang Tan: “…”
She stopped talking for the time being. She had been thinking about this all afternoon while working, but now that she was back, she found it very difficult to make a decision.
“By the way, you really won’t sue me later, right?” Jiang Tan asked in a somewhat muffled voice. After all, no matter how you sliced it, she had indeed marked an Omega against her will.
The woman’s eyes curved into a gentle smile. “I won’t. I know the situation was exceptional.”
Hearing her say that, Jiang Tan felt somewhat relieved and said with a note of compromise, “If you want to stay, then stay. But as you can see, I’m very poor. You won’t be able to rely on me for much.”
“Yes, I know. I will work hard to find a job,” the woman said softly.
“Eat. After we finish, I’ll take you to buy some necessities.” Jiang Tan placed a piece of fried fish in the woman’s bowl, serving as a conclusion to their conversation.
The woman’s eyes lit up noticeably, and she seemed much happier and relieved. “Mm, thank you.”
Jiang Tan sighed deeply in her heart. She felt she was being a bit reckless, but since she had already brought the person back and she was in such a state, she couldn’t exactly throw her out.
“Since you’re staying, I’ll need something to call you, right?”
Furthermore, if she was going to find a job and live a life, she needed a name.
“But I don’t remember what I’m called. Why don’t you pick one for me?” the woman said tentatively.
I’m not your mother.
Jiang Tan grumbled silently, but followed her lead anyway. “What should I pick? Your pheromones smell like Night-Blooming Cereus (Tanhua). I can’t exactly call you Tanhua, can I?”
Wouldn’t that be a bit too strange? It didn’t seem to fit the woman’s appearance.
The woman: “…”
She fell silent for a moment, looking down at the plain silver ring on her left ring finger. She took it off and examined it closely; on the inside of the band, a tiny letter ‘Y’ was engraved.
Seeing her staring at the ring, Jiang Tan couldn’t help but look as well. Relying on her superior Alpha vision, she saw the letter inside.
“I can’t exactly call you YY, can I?” Jiang Tan said casually.
The woman: “…Call me Jiang Yue. Use your surname.”
Jiang Tan blinked. “Oh, okay.”
With the name issue settled, Jiang Tan looked at the ring on her hand and couldn’t help but ask curiously, “You aren’t married, are you? If you’re missing, your family should be looking for you, right?”
Jiang Yue: “…I don’t know.”
“Oh.” Seeing that the other party clearly had no interest in this topic, Jiang Tan had no choice but to stay quiet.
After finishing dinner, Jiang Tan took a shower and changed into clean clothes. Clutching the six hundred yuan in her pocket, her heart felt heavy.
To buy things for Jiang Yue, how much could this six hundred yuan even get?
Jiang Tan’s heart felt like lead. Coming out of the bathroom, she looked at Jiang Yue and said softly, “You know, I’m very poor, so I can’t buy you very nice things for now. Prepare yourself mentally.”
Although she didn’t know if Jiang Yue had been wealthy herself, the clothes she originally wore looked very expensive. Jiang Yue might never have even touched the kind of clothes she was about to buy.
“I know. It’s better to save money.” Jiang Yue showed a gentle smile, appearing very understanding.
Jiang Tan felt even guiltier.
She led Jiang Yue downstairs. As Jiang Yue sat on the back seat of the bike, Jiang Tan heard her ask, “Why do you live as high up as the seventh floor?”
Clearly, after climbing those stairs twice, Jiang Yue had realized the difficulty of the seventh floor.
“The seventh floor is over three hundred yuan cheaper than the second or third floors,” Jiang Tan said with a pang of financial pain. Although she currently had an Alpha’s physique and could climb seven floors easily, it was still annoying to do it all the time.
Jiang Yue fell silent.
Jiang Tan took Jiang Yue to the underground street of the old city district. It was quite lively there, with shops for clothes, shoes, and everything else; they should be able to get everything Jiang Yue needed in one trip.
“Pick what you like, but once you’ve taken a fancy to something, don’t make it too obvious. Put the things you like in my left hand and the ones you don’t in my right. I’ll do the bargaining when the time comes.” Jiang Tan whispered instructions to Jiang Yue before they entered the underground street.
Jiang Yue’s eyes flickered. You can do it like that? Despite her surprise, Jiang Yue made sure to remember the instructions seriously.
Undergarments were naturally the first priority. Looking at the black lace bra that had been placed in her left hand, Jiang Tan felt as if a nuclear bomb had been detonated in her brain. Boom. Everything went white.
