- Chapter 5 - Seeing the Doctor: "I Will Wait For You to Return"
Faced with Jiang Tan’s words, the woman seemed somewhat speechless, yet she did not refute them. Upon reaching the doorway, she asked, “Shall I go out directly in slippers?”
Jiang Tan looked back at her. “Oh, right, I forgot about that. But what size do you wear? Can you fit into my shoes?” Just after speaking, Jiang Tan shut her mouth again, feeling that she was truly being problematic—asking someone for their shoe size when they had lost their memory.
She looked down at the woman’s feet tucked inside the slippers. “Your feet look smaller than mine; my shoes would probably be too big. Let’s just go in slippers.”
“…Oh.” The woman pursed her lips and followed Jiang Tan out the door.
Just as they stepped out, the door opposite them happened to open. Wang Xiuya, Grandma Wang’s daughter, was carrying a bag of trash out, clearly intending to go downstairs to dispose of it. She froze for a moment upon seeing Jiang Tan and the other woman.
“Xiao Jiang, is this your friend?” She looked at the woman and noticed the clothes she was wearing belonged to Jiang Tan, causing her expression to turn unnatural for a second.
Jiang Tan didn’t notice and replied, “Yes, my friend. Are you going to throw away the trash? Give it to me. I’m heading that way anyway, so it’s on the way.”
As she spoke, Jiang Tan reached out to take the trash bag from her hand.
“No need, are you two heading out? I’ll go throw it away for you,” Wang Xiuya said hurriedly.
“Oh, it’s no trouble at all.” Jiang Tan snatched the other’s trash bag in one swift motion. “You go back inside; we’re leaving now.”
Without waiting for the other woman to refuse again, she had already taken the lead downstairs.
Since she had left, the woman naturally followed in her footsteps.
Behind them, Wang Xiuya watched their retreating figures with a somewhat complicated expression. Finally, she let out a soft sigh, turned around, went back inside, and closed the door.
Inside the house, Grandma Wang was wiping the dining table with a cloth, and her little granddaughter was sitting on the living room rug playing with toys.
“You’re back so soon? I thought I heard Xiao Jiang’s voice just now,” Grandma Wang said.
“Yes, she was going out with her friend and took the trash down for us along the way.”
Hearing this, a smile appeared on Grandma Wang’s face. “Xiao Jiang is a good kid. If possible, you should interact with her more. I think Niannian likes her quite a bit too.”
Hearing her mother’s words, Wang Xiuya pursed her lips. “Mom, stop saying that. Xiao Jiang’s friend is an Omega.”
“Ah…” Grandma Wang paused and fell silent.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Jiang Tan led the woman down to the first floor and told her to wait by the bike shed while she quickly went to dispose of the trash before returning to get the vehicle.
The woman tilted her head slightly, watching that somewhat old electric scooter with a box attached to the back. She blinked slowly; it seemed that everything around Jiang Tan appeared so old and worn.
“Get on.” Jiang Tan drove the scooter up to the woman and signaled for her to board.
The woman looked as if she had never ridden such a vehicle before; her instincts provided no concept of how to get on nimbly. After hesitating for a moment, she lifted her leg and straddled the seat, subsequently feeling a bit worried about sitting steadily, yet she didn’t know where to put her hands.
“You can put your hands on my waist or rest them on my shoulders,” Jiang Tan said while starting the scooter.
The woman pursed her lips and hesitantly placed her hands around Jiang Tan’s waist. Perhaps because the two had performed a marking, even though Jiang Tan wasn’t deliberately releasing pheromones, being this close allowed the woman to smell the sweet yet bitter scent on her body.
She somewhat uncomfortably raised a hand to touch the gland at the back of her neck, still able to feel a slight, faint pulsing, as if it were being triggered by the Alpha’s pheromones.
Jiang Tan drove the woman to a clinic outside the residential area. Usually, when she came and went, she could see people occasionally going there for treatment, so she assumed the doctor must have some medical skill.
It should have been lunch break at this time, but Jiang Tan only had free time now, so she couldn’t afford to care about that.
“Doctor, are you free? Please help me check her condition,” Jiang Tan called out.
The doctor, who had been sitting there looking at his phone, raised his head upon hearing her voice. His gaze then fell upon the young woman Jiang Tan was pointing at. After scanning her, he asked, “What’s wrong with her?”
She looked perfectly fine, didn’t she?
Jiang Tan hurriedly pulled the woman over and pressed her onto the stool next to the doctor, standing aside to explain the woman’s situation.
After listening to her words, a somewhat complicated look appeared on the doctor’s face. “You’re saying she was under the influence of some aphrodisiac yesterday, and when she woke up the next day, she had amnesia?”
Jiang Tan nodded repeatedly.
The doctor looked at her, then at the woman, and couldn’t help but say, “Aren’t you an Alpha? Isn’t she an Omega? Aren’t you two a couple?”
They were already together like this, yet she actually let someone sleep through the effects of such a drug!
Jiang Tan’s eyes widened slightly, fearing the doctor would misunderstand. “We aren’t a couple! Even if we were, you can’t take advantage of someone in peril!”
Hearing this, the woman looked up at her.
The doctor fell silent for a moment. “If you weren’t going to do anything, why didn’t you send her to the hospital?”
Jiang Tan: “…”
She didn’t dare say too much more; she was afraid that if she said too much, the doctor might feel something was wrong and call the police.
The doctor sighed while examining the woman, saying, “This is just a small clinic. Do you think I can handle such a serious problem? I advise you to take her to a hospital for a check-up later.”
The doctor completed the examination and checked her pulse. “Overall, her physical health is quite good, aside from a bit of Yin deficiency; there are no other issues. As for the memory loss you mentioned, I suspect it is related to the dosage of that drug.”
“Those substances themselves cause a certain amount of irritation to the brain. Especially since you said it took two strong suppressants just to barely keep it down, it’s clear the dose was very large. Combined with the fact that it wasn’t relieved through that method, it caused a certain impact on the brain leading to temporary amnesia. Who knows, her memory might recover at any time in the future.”
“Is there no way to solve it?” Jiang Tan asked, unwilling to give up.
“Take some medication to promote brain nerve metabolism? But I don’t have those things here. You have to go to a large hospital, and only after those doctors examine and evaluate her can they prescribe medicine for you.” The doctor took off his gloves and said casually, “Perhaps you should let her come into contact with familiar things; maybe she’ll remember then.”
Jiang Tan: “…”
“I won’t charge you either. Don’t try to save a few pennies in the future; for this kind of problem, go to the hospital. I’m not some miracle doctor,” the doctor muttered. It was one thing to come for a cold or fever, but bringing an amnesia case to a small clinic—was her brain not working right?
Jiang Tan’s face instantly turned red.
Was she trying to save a few pennies?! It was because that woman couldn’t go to the hospital!
Jiang Tan was too embarrassed to stay any longer. She grabbed the woman’s wrist and walked out, her pace so fast it was as if she were being chased by a dog.
She was never coming back to this clinic again!
The woman followed Jiang Tan out the door and asked hesitantly, “Are we going home now?”
Jiang Tan released her hand and used the back of it to cool her flushed cheeks. She got back on the scooter and said, “No, get on first. I’ll take you to another place to have a look.”
Jiang Tan was a bit stubborn, but after taking the woman to two more clinics and receiving the same answers, she was forced to give up.
Looking at Jiang Tan’s silent silhouette, the woman didn’t dare speak at this moment.
Jiang Tan looked sideways at the unusually quiet woman and said with a heart full of despair, “Get on, let’s go back.”
“Okay,” the woman responded softly. By now, her movements for getting onto the scooter were very practiced.
Jiang Tan carried her back to the residential area and climbed the seven floors again. The two sat opposite each other in the dim living room, shrouded in silence.
The woman didn’t dare speak, mainly because she didn’t know what to do next, and even more so because she didn’t know what Jiang Tan was thinking.
Jiang Tan took out her phone and checked the time. “It’s almost time for me to go to work. Shall we discuss your problem after I get back from my shift?”
At this moment, Jiang Tan’s heart was also very heavy; she felt she needed time to think things through.
Hearing her say this, the woman felt a sense of relief in her heart. A shallow smile appeared on her face. “Okay, I will wait for you to return.”
Hearing these words, Jiang Tan pursed her lips, suddenly feeling a bit touched, her heart filled with complex emotions.
She rarely heard those words—or rather, she had almost never heard them.
“I’m leaving now. There are books in the house; if you’re bored, you can read them,” Jiang Tan said. After checking the time to make sure she didn’t have any more time to dally, she hurried out and rushed downstairs.
After Jiang Tan left, only the woman remained in the house. She rested her feet on the edge of the chair and curled her body up slightly, her heart also full of confusion.
“Xiao Jiang, why did you go back at noon? Didn’t you use to stay here?”
As soon as Jiang Tan arrived at the construction site, someone couldn’t help but ask out of curiosity.
Jiang Tan put on her safety helmet and smiled. “I wanted to rest; it’s more comfortable to go back for a nap.”
“Hahaha, we were all wondering if you had someone at home, making you rush back in such a hurry.”
Hearing this, Jiang Tan immediately felt guilty. She smiled and didn’t take the bait. “I’m starting to get busy, so I won’t chat anymore.”
Having said that, she hurried off to work on her own tasks.
Throughout the entire afternoon, Jiang Tan was so busy she didn’t even have time for two sips of water. As soon as it was time to clock out, she rushed toward the site canteen. The earlier she got there, the more likely the staff would be willing to give her extra food.
“Sister Liu, please help me get more rice; I’m still growing,” Jiang Tan said, being thick-skinned and somewhat embarrassed.
After having a meal with that woman and witnessing her appetite, Jiang Tan didn’t want to go hungry again.
The woman called Sister Liu looked at Jiang Tan and couldn’t help but laugh. “How old are you, and you’re still talking about growing? Have you no shame?”
But despite saying that, she still served Jiang Tan a full basin of rice and even gave her quite a bit of extra side dishes.
Seeing that mountain of food, Jiang Tan felt like tears were about to fall. She hadn’t eaten her fill at noon and had performed heavy labor all afternoon; she had long been so hungry that her front was sticking to her back.
However, she couldn’t eat yet. Jiang Tan carried the food and headed home.
Don’t blame her for “shearing the wool” of the construction site; she truly didn’t have much money to squander, and even a fifteen-yuan meal allowance was something that caused her heart to ache.
She carried the food back home.
Uh, she, well…
Looking at the woman who was currently mopping the floor, Jiang Tan was simply dumbfounded.
This appearance matched her even less!
