- Chapter 4 - Eating: "Let's Go Out and Get Your Brain Checked"
The only sound remaining in the old room was Jiang Tan’s slightly hurried breathing.
After a pause, the woman thought for a moment and said, “You could understand it that way.”
She has a problem, right? “You could understand it that way”?!
Jiang Tan couldn’t help but complain inwardly.
“You’re not playing a trick on me, are you?” Jiang Tan said gloomily. It was mainly because this woman was simply too calm. Furthermore, when asked if she had amnesia, she actually said it could be understood that way. She looked exactly like she was intentionally teasing her; how did she look like someone with amnesia?
A bewildered expression appeared on the woman’s face. “Why would I tease you? This isn’t fun.”
Jiang Tan: “…”
She carefully observed the woman’s expression. After confirming she really wasn’t joking, Jiang Tan nearly jumped up. She hurriedly set down the food in her hands to check the woman’s condition.
“You didn’t even injure your head, so how did you end up with amnesia?” Jiang Tan’s voice trembled slightly. She had been very careful after finding the woman; she definitely hadn’t injured the woman’s head while running with her in her arms! Moreover, back in that person’s self-built house, the woman had instructed her not to take her to the hospital—at least at that time, she hadn’t lost her memory yet, right?
So, here lay the problem: in the span of one night, without her head sustaining any injury, she had somehow inexplicably developed amnesia!
“You’re asking me?” The woman looked even more innocent.
Jiang Tan: “…”
Looking at her like this, Jiang Tan suddenly lost all her strength and schemes. She sat down powerlessly on the solid wood sofa. The seat beneath her was hard and chilly, yet it still couldn’t compare to the coldness in her heart.
After sitting down, her line of sight lowered. Only then did Jiang Tan notice the woman’s bare feet. She hurriedly got up again, grabbed a pair of slippers, and placed them by the woman’s feet. “Why aren’t you wearing shoes? Isn’t it cold like this?”
The woman looked down at the pair of white slippers in front of her. They looked new. She paused for a second before lifting her feet and putting them on.
“I didn’t know which shoes were mine.”
So because you didn’t know, you just didn’t wear any?
Jiang Tan hesitated to speak. Finally, she glanced at the dining table where the breakfast tray was no longer in sight and asked, “You ate breakfast, right?”
“I ate.” The woman nodded, essentially answering whatever she was asked, radiating a strange kind of obedience.
Jiang Tan sighed. “Are you hungry? Let’s eat lunch first. After eating, I’ll take you to see a doctor to see what’s going on.”
Since they couldn’t go to a hospital, they could only go to those small clinics. She didn’t even know if those small clinics could handle this.
Jiang Tan’s heart was filled with worry.
The woman did not object and followed Jiang Tan to wash her hands in preparation for lunch.
Jiang Tan noticed a newly appeared toothbrush in the rinsing cup in the bathroom, as well as a newly hung light-yellow towel. She paused for a moment; it seemed this person wasn’t completely foolish and knew to find a new toothbrush and towel to wash up.
The two of them washed their hands and returned to the living room. Jiang Tan took out the packaged food and divided it. She couldn’t help but say, “You have amnesia now. What if you can’t recover in the short term?”
Based on the situation she saw last night, this person’s identity might not be simple—or perhaps she encountered such things precisely because she was too “simple.” But regardless, taking her to the police station to find her family was out of the question; it would undoubtedly be like delivering a sheep into a tiger’s den.
Last night, she had clearly seen government markings on the person wearing the jacket. This meant that person was very likely someone within the “system.” Although she didn’t know how much power the other party had, it was clear she couldn’t take that risk.
“I don’t know either.” The woman picked up her chopsticks and began to eat.
Jiang Tan: “…”
This person’s state of mind is really something. In this kind of situation, she can actually still eat.
Jiang Tan complained silently, but halfway through the meal, she still told the woman about the situation last night. She also stated once again that the reason she had marked her was truly due to special circumstances, not because she was taking advantage of her.
The woman nodded and picked up a piece of meat for herself. She then stared at the fat attached to the lean meat and said, “So, we only met last night.”
Jiang Tan: “…If you want to put it that way, I guess that’s right. But why do you keep staring at that meat? If you’re not going to eat it, don’t pick it up.”
The woman looked up at the person before her and said seriously, “I feel like I don’t like eating fat, but I want to eat the lean meat on top.”
Jiang Tan: “???”
She was rendered speechless by the woman’s words. Yet, she couldn’t exactly tell the woman to just pick out the lean parts. After all, it was a construction site meal; it was impossible for it to not be greasy. These pieces of meat were all connected fat and lean, and there were very few pieces of purely lean meat.
She used her chopsticks to separate the fat and lean parts of a piece of meat. “Then you eat this lean part.” After saying that, Jiang Tan put the fatty part into her mouth with an expressionless face.
Actually, she didn’t like it much either. But after going through that period of hardship where she didn’t know where her next meal was coming from, Jiang Tan was no longer a picky eater. In any case, it was all edible.
The woman obediently put down the meat she was holding and picked up the lean meat Jiang Tan had separated.
“By the way, you don’t remember who you are. How should I address you later?” Jiang Tan remembered this problem again.
The woman ate slowly and didn’t speak; she just shook her head.
Jiang Tan’s expression was hard to describe. For some reason, she had a premonition.
She felt like she had picked up a “trouble.”
“My name is Jiang Tan. Jiang as in ‘river,’ Tan as in ‘deep pool’.” Jiang Tan had no choice but to introduce herself first.
“Then I’ll just call you Jiang Tan?”
“Sure.” Jiang Tan nodded indifferently, looking at the woman who seemed a bit difficult to handle.
While helping her out of the suit last night, Jiang Tan had checked; there was nothing on her body that could prove her identity.
She sighed in her heart and decided not to think too much. She took out her phone to browse local information while eating. When she saw a complaint post, Jiang Tan’s spine instinctively straightened, and her expression became much more serious.
[Does anyone know what’s going on? Why were there police conducting a surprise inspection last night?] The location was Gangcheng District.
Wasn’t Gangcheng District exactly where they were last night?
Jiang Tan quickly browsed the comments below. Many people were talking about this, confirming it was indeed the area of self-built houses from last night.
A layer of cold sweat instantly broke out on Jiang Tan’s back. It was a good thing they ran fast last night, and a good thing that, because of that slight, vague concern, she hadn’t actually sent the woman to the police station.
“What’s wrong?” the person opposite her asked with slight worry.
Jiang Tan looked up at her and held the phone up in front of her to show her. “You are in great danger.”
After the woman finished reading, she asked, “Then, aren’t you afraid?”
If seen this way, if it were discovered that she was the one who rescued her, Jiang Tan likely wouldn’t have a good time either.
“I guess I’m afraid, but it’s okay.” Jiang Tan retracted her phone and focused on eating, saying indifferently, “Anyway, my life is worthless. If I can save someone, I guess I have some value.”
The woman didn’t speak again, and the two of them ate their meal in silence.
However, as they ate, Jiang Tan noticed something.
How does it feel like this person doesn’t have enough rice?
“Not enough rice?” Jiang Tan asked her.
The woman paused for a moment, but still nodded honestly. “Mm, it’s a bit insufficient.”
Jiang Tan: “…”
Save me. When she held the woman last night, she was at most a little over a hundred pounds. She thought the woman wouldn’t be able to eat much!
But since she had brought the person back, it wouldn’t be right to let the other party go hungry. Jiang Tan gritted her teeth and still gave half of her own bowl to the other woman. “I haven’t touched this side yet.”
Seeing that there was more rice in her bowl, a genuine smile appeared on the woman’s face. “Thank you, Jiang Tan.”
No need for thanks; in exchange, I’m the one who isn’t full.
Jiang Tan said morosely in her heart, but on the surface, she still had to maintain an air of calm and indifference. It was truly a bit pitiful.
She suddenly somewhat regretted not asking Sister Zhou for more money. Given the current situation, if the woman stayed, that little bit of money probably wouldn’t last until her delivery salary was issued on the 20th…
After the two finished eating, Jiang Tan tidied up the trash. She was just about to tell the woman to hurry out when she saw her looking hesitant.
“What is it? If you have something to say, just say it.” Jiang Tan inquired. She didn’t look that scary, did she?
“That… I want to take a shower first…” The woman’s voice got smaller as she spoke, clutching the hem of her shirt somewhat awkwardly.
She could feel that she probably hadn’t bathed last night. She had wanted to wash for a while now, but because she didn’t know which clothes in the wardrobe were hers, she didn’t dare move for the time being.
Jiang Tan: “…” Right, I overlooked that.
“Then go in and wash quickly. I’ll send a change of clothes over to you in a bit. Remember to wash fast, we don’t have much time left.” She still had to go to work in the afternoon, especially since she had just received an advance on her wages; it wouldn’t be good to turn around and be late.
“…Mm.” The woman gave a low response and walked into the bathroom, which only had a small window high up. Even during the day, it looked quite dim overall. In some places on the ceiling, the paint had even fallen off, revealing the dusty gray cement layer.
The woman looked up at the cement layer, somewhat lost in thought, wondering how that thing could have fallen off.
Jiang Tan went back to her room to grab a set of her own clothes. Fortunately, she still had new underwear, so she wouldn’t have to make the woman wear her old ones or go without entirely.
She came to the bathroom door. Hearing no sound of showering inside, she couldn’t help but say, “Have you started washing yet? There really isn’t much time left. If it’s really not working out, just wash up casually, and you can wash properly when we get back?”
The woman inside the bathroom snapped out of it. “Washing now.”
“Oh, I’ve put the clothes in a bag and hung them on the handle. Take them yourself in a bit.”
“Mm.” The woman gave a low response and began taking off her clothes to wash.
Although the overall setup was quite simple, fortunately, there was still a water heater that allowed her to take a hot shower. Worried about Jiang Tan waiting outside, the woman also quickened her movements. Finally, she took the bag hanging on the door handle, got dressed, and then walked out.
Considering Jiang Tan’s urgency, she didn’t dare wash her hair for the time being. Her slightly curly long hair was casually gathered at the back of her head, revealing her slender and graceful neck.
Jiang Tan heard the movement and looked up at her, momentarily stunned.
The woman’s looks actually belonged to the cold, elegant, and exquisite category. It was as if she naturally should be wearing well-tailored suits or gowns to amplify her charm. Now, wearing an extremely simple black T-shirt plus black sweatpants, her body proportions were made to look even more elongated. It clearly looked quite simple and clean, but it was strangely mismatched with her temperament.
But there was no helping it; for the sake of working convenience, Jiang Tan basically only had these kinds of clothes and couldn’t pick out anything suitable for the woman.
Seeing her staring without speaking, the woman hesitated for a moment and looked down at herself.
“Does it not look good?”
Jiang Tan snapped back to her senses. “No, it’s just that the clothes feel a bit large, but it’s okay.”
Actually, even wearing a style that didn’t suit her, she already looked very “okay.”
“Let’s go, we’re going out to get your brain checked,” Jiang Tan said as she picked up the trash and moved to the door, calling out.
Woman: “…”
