- Chapter 3 - Not Gone: "You Marked Me"
The woman slowly sat up. As the quilt slid down, she revealed the shirt she was still wearing, which was now crumpled and messy.
The woman tilted her head slowly: “?”
Was she usually this unrefined? It wasn’t comfortable to sleep in this, either.
She got up sluggishly. Not seeing any slippers and noticing the floor looked relatively clean, she simply stepped onto it. She opened the lacquer-peeling wooden door, which led directly into the living room.
The woman observed her surroundings carefully. Although the entire house exuded an air of old, dilapidated age, fortunately, aside from the structure itself and the old furniture, the place looked quite clean.
Hmm… it seems I am a relatively clean person.
The woman gave herself an internal assessment, then noticed the breakfast laid out on the table.
“?”
Was there a second person in this house?
Dazed, the woman walked forward slowly and spotted a piece of paper on the table.
She picked up the paper to read, her other hand rubbing her temples, which were still aching with a swollen discomfort.
[Breakfast is ready for you. If it’s cold, heat it up yourself. If you’re going to leave, remember to help me close the door.]
Looking at this string of words, the woman’s gaze fell upon the so-called breakfast on the table.
Two slices of toast, a fried egg, and a few cherry tomatoes.
Is this breakfast?
For some reason, the thought that flashed through her mind at that moment was: This breakfast is so meager.
She increased the pressure as she rubbed her brow. So, this wasn’t her own home? Then why was she here, and who was she?
Vastly ignorant of almost everything, the woman slowly sat down, sinking into a deep sense of self-doubt.
On the other side, Jiang Tan had reported to the construction site early in the morning. There was no helping it; the original owner’s situation was even worse than her own. Finding a light and decent job was incredibly difficult, especially with the cursed cost of living in South City. It wasn’t exactly a top-tier city, but the prices were comparable to first- or second-tier cities, yet the wages were pitifully low. If one wanted to earn more money, the only option was the construction site.
“Xiao Jiang, go tie the steel bars in Section B later.” After she checked in, the foreman quickly assigned her a task.
Jiang Tan was one of the few Alphas in the group, and because she was good-looking, the foreman was quite willing to look after her. After all, in the foreman’s eyes, with Jiang Tan’s looks, it was only a matter of time before she was kept as a “pretty boy” by someone wealthy.
“Okay, but Sister Zhou, can I discuss something with you?” After agreeing, a look of slight embarrassment appeared on Jiang Tan’s face.
“What is it?” The foreman, called Sister Zhou, looked at Jiang Tan suspiciously. Surely she hadn’t been picked up by a benefactor already and was planning to quit?
Jiang Tan glanced around. Seeing the other workers busy with their own tasks, she whispered, “Sister Zhou, would it be possible to get an advance on a few days’ wages? I promise I’ll work hard!”
After saying this, Jiang Tan’s ears turned hot, and she felt incredibly embarrassed.
But there was no other way. The two doses of high-potency suppressants she bought for that woman last night were too expensive! Her pockets were cleaner than her face now; if she didn’t get an advance, even eating would become a problem.
Hearing this, Sister Zhou looked at her silently and couldn’t help asking, “Aren’t you single? Did you spend all the money you earned before? You haven’t gotten caught up in anything improper, have you?”
Jiang Tan’s eyes widened, her expression screaming, How could you think that of me?
“Sister Zhou! Suppressants are very expensive!” Jiang Tan couldn’t help but say aggrievedly. How was she supposed to know why the AO necessities in this ghost world were sold at such high prices! She deeply suspected the government or the pharmaceutical companies were taking advantage of the fact that AOs had to buy these things to fleece them! After all, they had no way to resist.
While suppressants for ordinary AOs weren’t too pricey, the problem was that Jiang Tan’s pheromone concentration was higher than most Alphas. She required specially formulated high-potency suppressants, and those were lethally expensive!
As a Beta, Sister Zhou fell silent for a moment. She silently took out her wallet and pulled out six hundred yuan. “I’ll advance you three days’ worth. Is that enough?”
Looking at those bright red bills, Jiang Tan was almost moved to tears. She calculated quickly: today was the 16th, and in a few days, her settlement from the food delivery platform would arrive. This money should last her until then.
“Enough, it’s enough! Thank you, Sister Zhou!” Jiang Tan took the six bills and hurriedly tucked them into her inner pocket like a treasure. This was her life insurance for the next few days!
Sister Zhou looked at her and hesitated, finally patting her shoulder with a sigh. “You’re a good kid who doesn’t mess around.”
After all, with Jiang Tan’s looks, even if she was poor, if she didn’t want to spend money on suppressants, she could surely find someone to help her through her rut, right?
Jiang Tan was choked by the words for a second. Before she could say anything, the hand on her shoulder shifted its force to give her a light push. “Go get to work.”
“Oh, Sister Zhou, I’m heading off then.” Jiang Tan complied, adjusted her safety helmet, and trotted over to her assigned position to begin her busy work.
Sister Zhou watched Jiang Tan’s tall, slender figure as she walked away, a thoughtful look appearing in her eyes. After interacting for a while, she felt that Jiang Tan was a good kid—handsome but not a philanderer like some arrogant Alphas. Her character was solid.
While her family background was poor, if she were to be recruited as a live-in son-in-law, family background wouldn’t matter anyway.
Sister Zhou had an Omega niece, but for the girl’s sake, she felt she needed to observe a bit more first.
Jiang Tan didn’t know what Sister Zhou was thinking. Wearing her safety helmet, she squatted down to tie the steel bars. Her movements were already very skilled—fast and sturdy.
Fortunately, the June weather wasn’t too scorching yet; otherwise, a full day of this would have turned Jiang Tan into a dried sweet potato.
After a morning of non-stop labor, Jiang Tan felt like her back was about to break when she stood up. She grimaced while supporting her waist, moving her body to relieve the soreness. She went to collect her meal, specifically asking the server for a bit extra before heading home with the food.
Normally, she wouldn’t come back at noon. Between the round trip and the time wasted, she’d usually just finish her meal at the site and find a spot to rest.
However, thinking there might still be someone at home, Jiang Tan decided to return and check.
Climbing up to the seventh floor, the building followed a layout of two units per floor. Jiang Tan’s neighbor across the hall had their door open, and the scent of food was already wafting out.
“Oh, Xiao Jiang, you’re back! Have you eaten? If not, come in and have a bite.”
Living across from her was a family of three spanning three generations. Grandma Wang had been allocated this apartment by her work unit years ago and had lived there ever since. Her daughter had moved back with her granddaughter after a divorce last year.
“No thanks, Grandma. I’ve already packed some food,” Jiang Tan replied with a bright smile, lifting the bag in her hand to show them.
“Eating takeout all the time isn’t healthy,” Grandma Wang said, disapproving of the situation.
“Big Sister~ are you really not coming in to eat? Mommy made delicious braised ribs today!” A little girl, appearing to be four or five years old, looked up expectantly at the pretty older sister.
“Yes, come join us,” the little girl’s mother added timely, a gentle smile on her face.
“I really can’t. I have a friend at home; it wouldn’t be right to leave her alone.” Jiang Tan smiled apologetically and declined their kindness again.
Seeing her insistence, Grandma Wang and the others didn’t press further and closed their door.
Jiang Tan took out her key and opened the door, her eyes locking with those of the woman who was just coming out of the bedroom. She froze. “You haven’t left yet?”
She had assumed the woman would leave immediately after waking up. She only came back because she wasn’t worried and wanted to confirm.
The woman, who had come out because of the noise outside, tilted her head at Jiang Tan’s words. “Why should I leave? Didn’t I live here originally?”
Jiang Tan: “???”
She looked at the incredibly beautiful woman in front of her with shock, wondering if she had hallucinated because of a lack of rest.
“What are you talking about? How could you possibly live here?” Jiang Tan couldn’t help but feel speechless. Just looking at the fabric of the woman’s shirt made it obvious she wasn’t the type of person who would live in a place like this.
“Then why did I appear here?” the woman countered.
The woman’s voice was clear and cold, exceptionally pleasant to the ear, but Jiang Tan was in no mood to appreciate it. She felt like her brain was about to crash.
“You don’t remember what happened last night?” Jiang Tan’s voice rose uncontrollably.
A look of confusion appeared on the woman’s face. “What happened last night?” At this, she paused, reaching up to touch the gland on the back of her neck. Feeling the faint traces there, she said in a matter-of-fact tone, “You marked me.”
At the mention of this, Jiang Tan immediately felt guilty and rushed to explain, “Don’t misunderstand! It was a special situation last night; nothing happened between us!”
“I swear! Other than that, I didn’t do anything to offend you!” Jiang Tan raised a hand in an oath, feeling a sharp pang of panic in hindsight.
After all, the punishments for violating an Omega’s will in this world were very severe. Especially since she had performed a temporary mark, if the other party sued her, it would be a shut-and-dry case.
The woman watched her serious yet panicked expression thoughtfully. Finally, she said slowly, “But I don’t remember who you are, and I don’t remember who I am either.”
Jiang Tan, who was already panicking: “???”
She widened her eyes, looking at the woman’s innocent expression.
“You’re saying… you have amnesia?”
If you’ve lost your memory, how can you still be this calm!!!
