- Chapter 11 - Drying Hair: Feeling a Bit Hot
Although it was already eleven o’clock, the snack streets were still very lively. Two rows were filled with colorful stalls, and the air was filled with the fragrance of various snacks, easily working up one’s appetite.
After the steaming hot beef offal noodles were served, Jiang Tan took a pair of disposable chopsticks and handed them to Jiang Yue. “Try it and see if it suits your taste.”
Both of them were the tall, long-legged type. Sitting on small red plastic stools at a folding dining table that barely reached their knees, the arrangement felt a bit cramped.
Jiang Tan was fine; ever since her family went bankrupt, she had become a regular at these places she had never set foot in before, and she sat there looking quite at ease, blending in perfectly.
In contrast, Jiang Yue was a bit different. She looked like she was visiting such a place for the first time, constantly adjusting her sitting posture since she sat down. However, no matter how she adjusted, there was a lingering sense of unnaturalness about her.
“Oh, just relax. No one is looking at us; there’s no need to carry such a heavy burden,” Jiang Tan said with a smile, speaking as someone who had been through it, though her expression looked somewhat gloating.
Jiang Yue gave her a slightly helpless look, but she was indeed hungry. When the beef offal noodles arrived, the aroma had already piqued her appetite.
“It smells so good,” Jiang Yue said softly.
“Eat up. Who knows when the next time we’ll eat this will be,” Jiang Tan stirred the noodles with her chopsticks to even out the flavor and couldn’t wait to take the first bite.
Hearing her words, Jiang Yue gave her a deep, meaningful look. She still remembered that last night, when this person spent the last eight yuan in her pocket, she had said it would be the last time in the near future she’d eat something bought from outside. Yet, how much time had passed before she turned around and brought her out to eat again?
Therefore, she didn’t believe a word Jiang Tan said now.
While eating the noodles, the taste was indeed as delicious as Jiang Tan had described. Seeing how heartily Jiang Tan was eating, Jiang Yue thought for a moment and asked, “Can we make this flavor ourselves?”
“Cough!” Jiang Tan hurriedly covered her mouth, nearly choking. She looked at Jiang Yue in shock. “You’re really daring to think that. If I could make this kind of flavor, I’d be running my own stall by now.”
Jiang Yue fell silent for a moment, her cheeks flushing slightly. “I thought we could make it at home to eat.”
“Anyway, I can’t do it.” Jiang Tan picked up a piece of beef intestine. “Just cleaning these internal organs alone takes a lot of time, not to mention the stewing that comes after.”
After all, Jiang Tan hadn’t spent any time in the kitchen during her first twenty years. Even though she often had to cook for herself later on, her culinary skills only reached the level of being “edible.” She didn’t have the conscience to call it “delicious.”
“Oh,” Jiang Yue replied and said nothing more. After quietly finishing the noodles, they returned to the neighborhood. One good thing about living in an old residential area was that it became quiet early; the downside was the possibility of being woken up early.
The two tried to lighten their footsteps as they went upstairs. Halfway up, Jiang Yue was already a bit out of breath. Jiang Tan was fine, though she was actually quite sleepy. Looking at her, Jiang Yue said apologetically, “Just treat it as daily exercise.”
Climbing seven floors every day—how could that not count as exercise?
Jiang Yue: “…”
She pursed her lips and continued climbing with her head down, saying, “When I earn money in the future, I’ll buy you an elevator apartment to live in.”
Jiang Tan was stunned for a moment, then her eyes crinkled into a smile. Finally, she couldn’t help but laugh out loud. “Alright then, I’ll wait for you to buy me an elevator apartment. You better make a fortune.”
She really hadn’t expected someone to talk about buying a house for another person right off the bat, especially when they were still dirt poor. Jiang Tan found it funny, but at the same time, her heart softened inexplicably, as if she had been lightly poked by something soft.
By the time they reached the seventh floor, Jiang Yue seemed to have no desire to speak, only standing to the side panting softly.
Jiang Tan wanted to tease her for eating so much yet panting after seven floors, but in the end, she didn’t laugh. After all, she felt a bit guilty; if she weren’t so poor, the other girl wouldn’t have to climb seven floors.
“You go shower first,” Jiang Tan said.
“You go. I’ll catch my breath,” Jiang Yue sat down in the living room, still panting. Jiang Tan had to work tomorrow; if she went first, it would be even later by the time Jiang Tan finished cleaning up.
Jiang Tan looked at her state. “Fine, I’ll go first.”
After Jiang Tan entered the bathroom, Jiang Yue, who had recovered, went to gather the clothes hung out last night. As she put them in the wardrobe, she looked at Jiang Tan’s clothes—mostly dirt-resistant blacks and grays, all casual and athletic wear. She didn’t see a single piece of formal clothing.
For some reason, Jiang Yue felt that Jiang Tan’s appearance was actually very suited for formal wear. She was tall; she would probably look better in it than most people.
After tidying the clothes, Jiang Yue looked down at the clothes she was wearing, which belonged to Jiang Tan. They were a bit too long for her; it seemed Jiang Tan was indeed a bit taller than her.
Just as Jiang Yue was lost in thought, Jiang Tan’s voice came from outside.
“Jiang Yue, go ahead and wash up.”
Jiang Yue took her change of clothes and walked out of the room, only to see Jiang Tan sitting on a wooden chair, her head tilted as she wiped her damp long hair.
“Do you need me to help you blow-dry it?” Jiang Yue asked naturally.
Jiang Tan’s hand paused. She looked up at her. “…No need. Hurry up and go wash.”
They didn’t really have that kind of relationship… helping someone blow-dry their hair seemed… weird and awkward no matter how you looked at it.
“Oh.” Jiang Yue didn’t persist. After all, she had to wash her own hair later, which would probably take a lot of time.
After a simple wipe-down, Jiang Tan fetched the hairdryer. Fortunately, her hair was only shoulder-length and not very long, so it wasn’t too much trouble. However…
Looking at Jiang Yue coming out of the bathroom, her nearly waist-length hair draped down after washing. Just looking at it made it seem like a massive project.
Seeing Jiang Tan staring at her hair, Jiang Yue felt a bit self-conscious and touched it. “Go to sleep. I’ll go to the balcony to handle it; I won’t disturb you.”
Jiang Tan looked at her with a bit of exasperation. “Who’s worried about you being noisy? Come here, it’ll be faster if we do it together.”
If Jiang Yue had to towel-dry and blow-dry it herself, it probably wouldn’t be finished in half an hour. It was already late; wasting more time would cut into their sleep.
Jiang Yue was stunned for a moment and stepped forward with some hesitation. Jiang Tan tossed the quilt that had been spread on the long wooden sofa to the other side and told Jiang Yue to sit right there.
“You dry that side, I’ll dry this side.” Jiang Tan took the towel originally draped over Jiang Yue’s shoulders and wrapped it around half of Jiang Yue’s long hair, rubbing it. Actually, Jiang Yue’s hair quality was very good; during the day, it looked smooth and lustrous, styled with a hint of chestnut-colored micro-curls—what people would fashionably call a very “Alpha-female” (regal/mature) look.
Jiang Yue hesitated for a moment but finally followed Jiang Tan’s instructions and began drying the other half of her hair.
Only… why did this feel so strange?
Jiang Yue watched as her hair was being rubbed on both sides simultaneously: “…”
Currently, her image was clearly far from its best.
She bit her lip slightly, but since Jiang Tan was being kind, Jiang Yue could only silently accept the behavior.
Being so close to Jiang Tan, Jiang Yue felt a sense of fluttering anxiety. Moreover, the slightly bitter scent of licorice drifting from Jiang Tan always made her unconsciously infatuated with the smell, wanting more.
Jiang Yue’s movements slowly ground to a halt. She wondered if it was because the marking was still recent, so she was in a state of extreme dependence on her Alpha?
Seeing her stop, Jiang Tan thought she was tired of rubbing. She took over the remaining work and, once it was dry enough, hurried to help her blow-dry it.
She approached it with the mindset of a construction worker, pursing her lips and focusing intently on managing Jiang Yue’s long hair. Because she was so focused, she didn’t notice the slight agitation of their pheromones in the air at all.
Jiang Yue unconsciously touched the gland on the back of her neck.
She felt a bit hot.
