The Lost Omega Heiress is Pregnant with My Child - Chapter 7
Fifty thousand coins.
Shi Anzhi chuckled lightly, “What do you like about me?”
Nian Xue’s eyelashes fluttered slightly, “You’re good-looking.”
Shi Anzhi hadn’t expected Nian Xue to actually come up with something, and she was momentarily speechless.
In her view, it wasn’t surprising for an Omega to express affection toward her. After all, she was the only one who could provide Nian Xue with a safe haven in this dangerous situation.
How much of this affection was just an attempt to survive by pleasing her? Shi Anzhi couldn’t help but think this way. Thinking like this helped suppress the faint itch in her heart.
Seeing Shi Anzhi remain silent, Nian Xue pouted, “It’s your turn to speak.”
“You just said you liked me too, so what do you like about me?”
Nian Xue looked in Shi Anzhi’s direction, “You can’t say it’s because I’m good-looking.”
Shi Anzhi nodded and looked at Nian Xue for a moment.
She said seriously, “I like that you eat a lot.”
Nian Xue froze for a moment before realizing Shi Anzhi was teasing her. Blushing with embarrassment and annoyance, she playfully hit Shi Anzhi.
The two chatted and laughed as they returned home.
By then, Bobo, who had been playing outside, came back looking for food. Shi Anzhi fed Bobo, prepared a simple lunch, and after the meal, began working.
She wiped the fresh fruits clean and neatly arranged them on the shelves.
Nian Xue stood beside her, imitating her actions, and began helping to place the fruits.
The fruit shop was relatively quiet, with not much work to do, and it didn’t earn much money. Most of Shi Anzhi’s income came from other jobs.
When regular customers came to buy fruit, they couldn’t help but be curious about the unfamiliar face. At first, Nian Xue was very shy, but she gradually learned to mimic Shi Anzhi’s tone and started promoting the fruits to passersby.
“Hello, would you like to buy some fruit? It’s very sweet!”
The aunt from the auto repair shop across the street, seeing how pretty Nian Xue was, was very supportive.
“How much is this?”
“Ten coins per pound!”
Nian Xue immediately quoted the price Shi Anzhi had taught her, her eyes shining brightly.
The aunt bought two pounds.
After the aunt paid, Nian Xue was thrilled. She excitedly ran to Shi Anzhi and showed her the silver coins the aunt had given her, “Anzhi, I earned money. This is so much fun!”
Shi Anzhi looked at her sparkling eyes and smiled, “Wow, this is the money you earned. You can keep it yourself.”
“No.”
Nian Xue shook her head and stuffed the coins back into Shi Anzhi’s hand, “You’re my Alpha. My money is your money.”
Shi Anzhi’s heart was struck hard by these words.
She wondered if she should correct Nian Xue’s wording.
In truth, it wasn’t really appropriate for them to live together. It was only because Shi Anzhi was born with a disability and the slums were a harsh environment that they had no other choice.
But Nian Xue was about to go into heat.
Shi Anzhi started thinking about the suppressants again.
In the afternoon, Shi Anzhi took Nian Xue out and bought her many new clothes.
Nian Xue was excited the entire time, fascinated by everything she saw.
Their final destination was the clinic. Shi Anzhi asked Teng Ying to check on the Omega’s recovery.
After examining Nian Xue, Teng Ying was quite surprised. The Omega’s health had improved significantly since she first arrived, but there was one strange thing Nian Xue still had residual neurotoxins in her body, and Teng Ying didn’t know what they were.
To be cautious, Teng Ying put Nian Xue on an IV drip and discussed the situation with Shi Anzhi outside.
“She’s recovering quite well. Not bad, Shi Anzhi. Did you use G-23 on her? You’re really generous.”
Shi Anzhi smiled slightly, “But it seems her memory hasn’t recovered. She talks like a child normally her brain definitely hasn’t healed yet.”
Teng Ying found this amusing. She was only responsible for physical health, not mental state, and said indifferently, “I already told you she’s a fool, you just didn’t believe me.”
“Isn’t it normal for fools to talk like children?”
Shi Anzhi: …
She shot Teng Ying an annoyed sidelong glance, and Teng Ying reluctantly closed her mouth.
Shi Anzhi changed the subject. “She might be entering her heat cycle soon.”
“I haven’t asked you before, do you have a way to get suppressants? How much for one dose?”
Hearing this, Teng Ying was taken aback.
As a Beta, she couldn’t sense Nian Xue’s pheromones and didn’t know she was approaching her heat.
In District R, suppressants were similarly unavailable luxury items. When people in the slums went into heat, they simply endured it unlike those in special zones who prized their dignity, most here just followed their desires for relief.
Teng Ying did have connections to obtain suppressants, but…
She honestly shared her earlier discovery with Shi Anzhi. “When I examined her, I found traces of a complex neurotoxin in her system.”
“The dosage is very small and has been dormant, but if stimulated by intense pheromones or certain strong medications, it could likely activate.”
Shi Anzhi frowned slightly. “What kind of toxin? How do we treat it?”
“How would I know?”
Teng Ying shrugged. “I’m just a dentist, not all-powerful. It’s better not to use suppressants, I’m not sure what the consequences might be.”
“To be safe, you should take her to the Border Hospital for a full physical examination.”
The Border Hospital was the only medical facility in District R, with exorbitant costs. Without hesitation, Shi Anzhi added this to her agenda.
Money. It was needed everywhere.
The following days passed warmly and uneventfully for Shi Anzhi and Nian Xue.
Nian Xue was speaking more and her spirits were improving. She had grown fond of this playhouse-like life, eagerly following Shi Anzhi to tend the shop and sell fruit each day, keeping the small fruit store tidy and organized.
Shi Anzhi cherished these days.
But money was truly running short.
The cost of G-23 nutrient supplements loomed like a mountain. Shi Anzhi knew the meager income from selling fruit couldn’t possibly cover the treatment Nian Xue would need.
She asked Teng Ying for more work, any kind would do.
A few days later, Teng Ying called.
Her voice was as direct as ever. “Got a big job. Are you free now?”
“What is it?”
“Carnival Club has a fight tonight. One of the regular fighters overdosed and is out they need a replacement.”
Teng Ying paused. “The payout is high. Win, and you get a 50,000-credit bounty.”
Fifty thousand credits.
That was enough to buy many doses of G-23 nutrients, plenty of pretty dresses and treats for Nian Xue, and even enough to inquire about safely retrieving that necklace from Ding Sha.
It would also cover a comprehensive physical exam for Nian Xue at the Border Hospital.
Shi Anzhi didn’t hesitate. “I’ll do it.”
“I knew you’d agree.”
Teng Ying chuckled on the other end. “Ten tonight. Don’t be late. Your opponent is tough, be careful.”
After hanging up, Shi Anzhi felt a weight settle in her chest.
She looked up at Nian Xue, who was diligently gathering the clothes, and after a moment of thought, she lied to her, saying that Teng Ying had a heavy batch of goods to move and she needed to go help in the evening, so she might return late.
Nian Xue immediately said, “I want to go with you.”
“No.”
Shi Anzhi’s tone was firm this time, her brow furrowing. “Wait for me at home, okay? Be good.”
Shi Anzhi was usually gentle, rarely looking so serious.
Nian Xue fell silent for a moment before letting out an unhappy “Mm.”
“Then be careful and come back early.”
Shi Anzhi replied, “I will.”
She knew that this trip might take until midnight at the earliest, or even until dawn, and there was a possibility she might not return at all.
But she would do her utmost to prevent that from happening.
Leaving Nian Xue alone at home made her uneasy. After much deliberation, she could only ask the neighbor, Auntie, to keep an eye on her.
Before leaving, she gently closed the door and walked next door, knocking on the neighbor’s door.
The door was opened by Lin Wenshui, the neighbor’s daughter.
Seeing it was Shi Anzhi, Lin Wenshui’s eyes lit up with surprise.
“Anzhi? It’s so late, you.”
Shi Anzhi asked, “Is Auntie not home?”
“My mom went to a relative’s house. Is there something you need?”
Well, Shi Anzhi didn’t like beating around the bush, and there wasn’t much time to explain. “I have an urgent matter to attend to and might be back very late.”
“My friend is alone at home, and I’m worried. If you hear any commotion, could you please check on her?”
Lin Wenshui paused for a moment before realizing who she meant by “friend.”
A pang of bitter jealousy surged in her heart, but she quickly masked it with a polite smile.
“Of course.”
She replied softly, her eyes filled with concern. “Is it more work for Dr. Teng Ying? You’re always so busy. Don’t worry, I’ll help you keep an eye on things at home.”
Shi Anzhi couldn’t tell Lin Wenshui what she was really doing, so she simply replied, “Thank you. I’ll treat you to a meal when I’m back.”
Running out of time, Shi Anzhi said no more and turned to get into the car.
Lin Wenshui stood at the door, watching Shi Anzhi’s retreating figure, the smile on her face gradually fading.
She glanced back at the tightly closed door across the hall, her expression growing complex and profound.
Night deepened.
This was the first time Nian Xue was spending the evening without Shi Anzhi. She had thought she could endure it.
But the room was utterly silent, and the faint scent of Shi Anzhi in the air was almost gone.
Panic slowly engulfed her like a rising tide.
Her memories before meeting Shi Anzhi were a blank slate. Nian Xue hadn’t realized just how accustomed she had grown to Shi Anzhi.
The Omega paced back and forth in the small room before finally curling up helplessly on the bed, burying her face deeply into the pillow Shi Anzhi had slept on, trying to grasp the last lingering traces of her scent.
Just then, a soft knock came from outside the door.
“Miss Nian Xue, are you there? It’s Lin Wenshui, from next door.”
Nian Xue recognized the voice of the Omega she had encountered at the farm.
She didn’t respond.
She didn’t like this Omega.
Outside the door, Lin Wenshui seemed quite patient. She knocked again, speaking in what she thought was a gentle tone, “Anzhi asked me to look after you before she left. I brought you some calming bone broth. Could you open the door?”
Hearing “Anzhi’s” name, Nian Xue hesitated.
It was Shi Anzhi who sent her.
In the end, she walked over and opened the door.
Lin Wenshui stood at the doorway, holding a food container.
She stepped into the room and, like the lady of the house, familiarly placed the bone broth on the coffee table, then subtly observed this Omega whom Shi Anzhi had so carefully protected.
“Drink it while it’s hot.”
As she spoke, Lin Wenshui took off her coat and sat down, her posture as if she were in her own home.
Nian Xue didn’t move, merely hugging a pillow and watching her warily.
“Ah, Anzhi really has it tough,” Lin Wenshui sighed to herself, her gaze drifting toward Nian Xue with implied meaning. “Before, when she was alone, all she needed was food and warmth. But now she has to take care of such a fragile O like you, the pressure must be immense, right? Look how late it is, and she still has to go out to earn money.”
Each of her words was like a soft thorn, gently pricking Nian Xue’s heart.
Nian Xue understood the implication behind “O.”
She was saying that Nian Xue was nothing but a burden.
