- Chapter 11 - The Brawl
Susu felt that if she didn’t step in to stop it, the landlord’s gas stove was about to be dismantled. To minimize the damage, she decided to go in and take a look.
Sure enough, as soon as she opened the door, a pure silver afterimage streaked past like a bolt of lightning and landed at her feet with a loud “thud.”
After her vision adjusted, she realized that the object slammed in front of her was the cast-iron grate from the top of the gas stove.
As for the cat, it was currently circling the edge of the stovetop, its glassy yellow-green eyes darting back and forth as if calculating where to sink its claws next.
Ye Qingqing paused briefly upon hearing the noise, then clamped her teeth around the ignition knob on the bottom left, sticking her butt in the air as she gnawed and tugged.
Susu looked at the messy floor, then at the “Husky of the Cat World” who was working hard to demolish the house, and slowly walked over.
Ye Qingqing held the knob with both paws, rocking it side to side while letting out a threatening growl from her throat, intended to warn the human not to come any closer.
The unflappable cat owner stood still in front of the stove, her narrow peach-blossom eyes quietly observing the cat’s every move.
Ye Qingqing looked up, and the eyes of the human and the cat met.
“Meow-ow… woo-woo!” (What are you looking at? This King will poke your eyes out!)
The girl’s lips curled into a slight smile. Her slender wrist reached out, pinched the scruff of soft fur on the back of Ye Qingqing’s neck, and lifted upward with her fingertips.
The majestic King of Cats was thus suspended in mid-air by a human, flailing its paws wildly.
“Wa-woo… wa-oh!” (Insolent human, what do you think you’re doing to this King!)
In the cramped space, the howling and struggling grew louder and louder, but the cat owner remained deaf to it, carrying the living creature in one hand toward the bedroom.
Halfway there, Susu’s wrist grew sore. She calmly stopped, switched hands, and continued toward the bed.
Because of the frantic struggling and her sheer rage, Ye Qingqing’s vision became blurred. She couldn’t distinguish her surroundings and could only keep lowing and growling in her throat.
Susu spotted a relatively soft spot, stood her ground, and with a flick of her wrist, tossed the cat out.
Ye Qingqing was thrown heavily onto the bedsheets. Dizzy and disoriented, she struggled for a long time before crawling out of the folds of the blanket.
Looking up, she found the culprit human slowly stretching her muscles by the side of the bed.
Susu raised both hands and gently blew away a stray cat hair caught on her fingertip, then elegantly brushed the dust off her clothes.
Ye Qingqing: !!!
As the legendary war god of the Tabby Tribe, when had she ever suffered such humiliation? If they didn’t fight to the death today, she wasn’t a cat!
Without a second’s delay, Ye Qingqing rolled out of the covers and crouched at the head of the bed, her pupils shrinking into thin slits as she prepared to strike.
Ding~
Ding-ding~
The broken phone on the bedside table chimed several times in a row. Under the “Heavenly Cat Teacher’s” earnest instruction, Ye Qingqing had learned a few human characters. Through the cracked screen, she saw a black contact name flashing in the notification bar.
Qian Xiaoju: What are you doing?
Qian Xiaoju: [Mall Location]
The moment she saw the name “Qian Xiaoju,” the King of Cat’s target shifted instantly.
Her snake-like eyes stared fixedly at the screen. With another ding, a line of text flashed quickly: Waiting for you, baby!
In human language, “baby” was an extremely intimate term, possessing a magical power much like the cry of a cat in heat making the recipient unable to resist approaching…
If two people were flirting, and one actively invited the other using the term “baby,” then they were “releasing a signal” in the same way a cat marks territory with urine…
The “useful tips” she had previously seen on forums came flooding back all at once. Ye Qingqing slammed a paw onto the cracked screen. The glass pricked her pink paw pad, causing it to twitch and retract. Her short tail fluffed up like a squirrel’s as she let out a loud “Wa-oh!”
“Insolent vixen! How dare you covet this King’s prey!”
She jumped off the bed, lunged in front of the cat owner, and with a lift of her rear, left a pile of waste right there.
“Meow-ow!” (Come at me, baby!)
This retaliation came so unexpectedly that the usually composed cat owner’s peach-blossom eyes widened like copper bells.
“Holy crap! You…”
“Wa-oh… wa-oh…”
Ye Qingqing used every ounce of her strength to let out the same kind of yowling she had made when they first met at the hospital.
Only then did Susu realize this fellow was going into heat right then and there!
She had seen plenty of cats in heat; when it got bad, they truly couldn’t control their emotions. Especially female cats they would experience abnormal headaches, lie down and kick their own chins with their hind legs, or rub frantically against objects…
When her previous cat, “Little Darling,” was suffering, she had helped out a few times with a cotton swab. But this one in front of her… she wasn’t an ordinary pet cat after all!
Seeing that the other party wasn’t reacting, Ye Qingqing moved closer to her, striking an alluring pose while her yowling grew even more fervent.
Susu suddenly realized the cat was targeting her and stumbled backward.
“Wh-what are you doing!”
Ye Qingqing moved another half-inch forward.
Susu took a sharp step back, her legs going weak as she slumped to the floor. She scouted around, grabbed a nearby trash can, and held it up high in defense.
“Don’t—don’t come any closer, I’m warning you!”
Ye Qingqing’s offensive didn’t let up as she twisted her body and continued to howl wildly.
In her desperation, Susu swung the trash can forward and tossed it. The trash inside scattered everywhere.
The trash can landed accurately, upside down, over Ye Qingqing’s cat head.
“Wa-woo!”
The round ball of a Cat King struggled inside, filled with darkness and indignation.
At the same time, the broken phone on the bed began to ring.
Ring a ring a ring ring a ring a ring…
Such a cheerful, upbeat ringtone was the perfect accompaniment to the scene unfolding.
The fear in Susu’s heart finally subsided.
Watching the cat spin around frantically to the beat of the music, trying to break free from its shackles, she felt like laughing. But seeing the pile of waste on the floor, the smile vanished.
The happy song continued. Susu slowly stood up and walked toward the ringing phone.
When her long fingertips swiped across the cracked screen, her voice was as clear and sweet as ever.
“Hello, Sister Xiaoju!”
On the other end, however, was a voice with a distinctly “tomboy” vibe, forming a sharp contrast to Susu’s delicacy.
“What are you doing? I sent you messages and you didn’t reply!”
Susu looked at the clumsily struggling Ye Qingqing, then at the mess on the floor, and let out a long sigh.
“Sorry, Sister Xiaoju. My cat’s in heat and made a mess on the floor. I’m busy cleaning up!”
“Ah, you have a cat? Since when?”
During their brief exchange, Ye Qingqing, still wearing the trash can on her head, made several leaps. With a “clatter,” the can was finally flung off.
“Meow-ow!” (You vixen, this King will destroy you!)
Just as Susu regained her focus, a blurred shadow lunged from behind, “thumping” into her and knocking the device out of her hand.
Qian Xiaoju’s voice could still be heard on the other end, repeatedly saying, “Hello? Hello?”
“I grabbed a ‘Yi Xi Di’ coupon 50 off for every 99 spent! I sent you the location, hurry up and get over here!”
Ye Qingqing’s cat eyes bulged as she glared at the broken phone, looking as if she might swallow it whole in the next second.
Susu walked over slowly, picked up the phone, and very calmly blew the dust off it.
“Sister Xiaoju, a little situation came up here. Give me a moment!”
“Alright, just head straight over when you’re done. I’ll head there first to scout out a spot!”
The other side hung up decisively before Susu could reply, leaving the human and the cat staring each other down.
“Meow-ow!” (You are not allowed to go!)
“Crazy cat!”
Ye Qingqing’s “plum blossom” paws stomped heavily on the bedsheets. Finally, unable to take it anymore, she blurted out half a sentence in broken human speech.
“Don’t… go! Did… you… hear… me!”
