- Chapter 10 - The Hoax
The girl was already overwhelmed by grief, and after being startled by her like this, she fainted directly.
She was still sticking her bottom up, puffing and blowing air with all her might, when she noticed the body she was dragging in her hands gradually went limp.
Ye Qingqing’s movements stiffened, and the person slipped right through her fingertips.
Like a prey that wasn’t quite dead yet, the girl lay there motionless, eyes closed and paralyzed.
Ye Qingqing took half a step back and crouched. Her back was tense and her ears were pricked as she scrutinized the girl carefully.
Is this… out of breath?
Half a second later, Ye Qingqing nudged forward an inch, reaching out her right hand to give the girl’s head an experimental poke.
The girl’s head yielded to the force and fell to the other side. Ye Qingqing performed a cat-like pounce over to her, squinting as she continued her observation.
A faint pulse rose and fell against the side of that beautiful swan neck; the skin was so delicate it seemed a breath could break it. There were bright red lips, a sexy collarbone…
This sight completely triggered the Cat King’s hunting instincts. Ye Qingqing’s pupils dilated abruptly and her ears pinned back, looking as if she were about to pounce and bite in the next second.
Hiding in the top-left corner of the browser, the Tmall LOGO, who had been silently watching, hurriedly slammed its paw on the F12 key.
“Great King, you must not!”
She licked her lips and slowly looked toward the source of the electronic voice.
You old fossil, you’ve ruined my fun time and time again!
Half of the Tmall Teacher’s LOGO was exposed with nowhere to hide, so it could only fold its O-shaped eyes and triangular mouth into a ‘T’ shape. The electronic voice stammered.
“G-G-Great King, the Little Mistress is the target you need to conquer in the human world. If she kicks the bucket…”
Faced with Ye Qingqing’s death stare once again, the old fellow awkwardly shook its T-shaped body and braced itself to begin the hoax.
“Great King! This delicious prey must be preserved and savored slowly to be truly flavorful. Have you ever heard of the human classic known as Journey to the West?”
Ye Qingqing shook her head: What “Journey to the West”? This King has never heard of it!
Though she claimed to have never heard of it, there was finally a response. The old fellow grabbed onto this half-strand of a lifeline and pushed the hoax further.
“In Journey to the West, there is a monk named Tang Sanzang who is traveling to the Western Heaven to worship Buddha and seek scriptures. It is said that eating his flesh grants immortality, so many monsters and demons were obsessed with him. Later, Tang Sanzang accidentally entered the Pipa Cave and was targeted by a female Scorpion Spirit…”
Blah, blah, blah Tmall Teacher spun its own version of the tale until finally, the Cat King began to hesitate.
“Then tell me, what should this King do to be like that Scorpion Spirit and eat her up, skin and bone?”
As soon as Tmall Teacher’s T-shaped body relaxed, its half-O eyes sparkled with little glimmers of light.
“That’s easy! While the Little Mistress is unconscious, the Great King can learn some tricks used by pet cats to seduce humans, tempting her to take the initiative to approach you!”
It clicked through several links from the homepage folders, and the browser popped open several new windows, all filled with Meow-language that Ye Qingqing could understand.
These were the “dry goods” (essential tips) compiled by the ancestors of the Ragdoll tribe on how to seduce humans. For the current Cat King, they were extremely practical!
Ye Qingqing stared at the screen without blinking. Born brilliant with a photographic memory, she quickly memorized the gist of it, though the essence of the techniques required further mastery.
Time was tight. Tmall Teacher’s hacking skills were indeed formidable, but surviving for a long time inside a programmer’s computer was still quite exhausting. Once it finished transmitting the core essentials, it took the opportunity to slip away.
In human form, Ye Qingqing squatted on the computer chair, seriously contemplating the theoretical knowledge she had just memorized. Less than half an hour later, the cat owner woke up.
The girl stared blankly at the ceiling. In her mind was that beam of blue light, the pupils zooming in, the lips suddenly pressing down, and the pitch-black air all around…
Ahem, ahem.
A low cough pulled the Cat King, who was immersed in the sea of knowledge, back to reality. Her alert neck retracted, and she transformed back into a cat, jumping down from the computer chair.
“Meow~”
Having just walked the line between life and death, the cat owner was now quite unfazed. All her grievances and bitterness had vanished during that fright.
She tried to roll over and, lying on her side, waved her hand toward Ye Qingqing.
“Come here, get up here!”
Because she was too weak, her voice was slightly raspy.
Ye Qingqing meowed hesitantly, squatting in place and refusing to move.
The girl patted the bedsheets, curling her fingers the way she usually called for Qinqin.
“Get up here!”
“Meow~” (You think I’ll come up just because you said so!)
Ye Qingqing rolled her eyes while simultaneously feeling an irresistible urge to investigate. Her hind leg muscles flexed, and she leaped up, sitting at the edge of the bed and watching the girl while wagging her tail.
“Come on, get a little closer!”
“Meow!” (Why should this King listen to you!)
“Hurry up!”
Yet, when the girl reached out a second time, she still tucked her neck and moved closer.
“Good girl!”
The girl’s hand moved to stroke her head.
Ye Qingqing turned her head away awkwardly.
“Meow-ow!” (Take your paw away! Do not be insolent to this King!)
The girl’s slender fingers paused in mid-air. Her peach-blossom eyes were filled with the colors of spring, and a faint, lingering smile hung at the corners of her mouth.
This was Ye Qingqing’s first time observing a human at such close range.
Why were human fingers so thin and long? And the light coming from their eyes was different from cats—it had a kind of natural magic and temptation, just like the theory she had just read…
Possessed by some strange impulse, she moved her averted head a little closer, then a little closer still.
But the girl didn’t pet her. She withdrew her fingers, picked up the phone beside her, and started tinkering with it on her own.
“Are you hungry? I heard there’s a restaurant online with many strange and exotic foods. Do you want to try some?”
She talked while she browsed, her expression very focused.
Ye Qingqing was incredibly curious and leaned her cat neck over to see the screen.
Thwack! With one kick, the device in the cat owner’s hand was sent flying two meters away.
The girl wasn’t angry; she just looked at the bristling little kitten beside her and smiled faintly.
Ye Qingqing jumped off the bed and delivered another palm strike to the shattered screen displaying a short video titled “100 Ways to Cook Cat Meat.” Her chubby body ran straight toward the kitchen, and at the last second, she blocked the door with her bottom.
The girl only wanted to tease her; she didn’t actually want to do anything to this monster. Of course, she couldn’t do anything to her even if she wanted to.
Perhaps the effects of the expired medicine had worn off, as she had regained some strength. She forced herself to crawl up, leaning against the bed to pick up the phone. In the notification bar above the shattered screen, voice messages from several elders were flooding in one after another.
她 played them all back one by one, tilted her head back, and let out a long sigh of relief. Then, she tapped ‘Accept’ on the first friend request in the verification list.
Just as the addition was successful, a hamburger emoji two slices of bread sandwiching a cat head appeared in the message column.
[Stargazy Pie]: My parents said they wanted to help me “New an Object.” The kitty squatted in front of the phone for ages before finally grabbing an entry ticket. I’m happily rubbing my hands together~
[Stargazy Pie]: Hello, my name is Su Bing. Very glad to meet you QAQ!
It was quite a humorous opening. Su Su tapped the dialogue box, her fingertips tapping on the shattered screen.
“Hello, Su…”
Clatter—
Before she could finish typing, the sound of breaking porcelain came from the kitchen.
She ignored it and continued typing.
BAM! Another sound the noise of an iron pot hitting the floor…
