- Chapter 44 - The Result is What Matters [V-Split End] As Long as I'm Alive
A black-gold stud appeared on his earlobe.
After a moment’s thought, Fu Qingya decided to simply take off the blue-black mechanical armor as well.
He shook out the garment, revealing two jagged holes where sharp blades had pierced through. “The damage is quite severe,” he noted. “Repairing this is going to be a bit of a headache.”
Luo Mingyuan, who had been marveling at the sheer number of gadgets Fu Qingya had hidden on his person, shifted his gaze to the armor. The wear and tear suggested Fu Qingya had been wearing it for quite some time. Given this guy’s habit of running toward danger, the armor had likely saved his life more than a few times.
Its hardness surely far exceeded any domestic military equipment, yet it had been punctured clean through. It was hard to imagine how tough the opposing blade must have been to slice through alloy like it was cutting paper.
“It’s a miracle you survived that blade,” Luo Mingyuan remarked, a sudden wave of genuine emotion hitting him.
It was the truth, and Fu Qingya couldn’t argue with it. He had indeed struggled desperately to survive the gene-destroying toxin.
However, the rewards had been equally significant. To him, as long as the result was good, the process didn’t matter.
It was the same as his approach to research; he never dwelled on how many obstacles he encountered during development, he only cared about the breakthrough. In that desolate apocalypse where resources were scarce, technology lagged far behind the invaders, and survival was a daily gamble, the version of Fu Qingya who carried the last embers of human hope would have collapsed long ago if he had let every failure get to him.
Thus, no matter how much effort he expended or how much he suffered, the fact that he had successfully modified his own genes made it all worth it. He had added another layer to his arsenal against external enemies.
That realization made him content.
So, Fu Qingya remained silent. He couldn’t reveal his deepest thoughts to Luo Mingyuan, but he was also above lying.
After a long pause, he set the armor down and pressed his fingertip against his waist. A silver chain with a recessed groove appeared against his skin. The pale flesh and the shimmering silver intermingled, making it hard to tell which was more radiant.
“At least I’m alive,” he said.
There was no need to overthink the how or the how hard.
Luo Mingyuan looked away, avoiding the distracting sight of Fu Qingya’s torso. “You really are more complicated than every autopsy report I’ve ever handled. I can’t read you at all.”
“What is it you’re after? Why subject yourself to such cruel self-inflicted harm just to get it?” Luo Mingyuan murmured, his eyes momentarily hazy, though his hands remained efficient as he packed up.
[Beep, beep, beep—]
“Hello, Host. The data analysis report you requested has been issued. Please review it.”
A mechanical voice chimed from the watch face on Fu Qingya’s wrist. His prosthetic eye quickly synced with the incoming data.
The genetic data looked normal. His blood-qi was significantly stronger than an average person’s, and his cell activity was slightly higher. To put it simply, he was a robust, physically peak young man.
“Your health is excellent,” Fu Qingya said, ignoring Luo Mingyuan’s murmurs and changing the subject. “The report shows you’re in great shape.”
“Thanks for the compliment. That’s about the only good news I’ve had lately,” Luo Mingyuan replied flatly.
Fu Qingya understood the underlying meaning in his tone, but he chose to ignore it once again.
[Ring, ring, ring]
The standard phone alert sounded, and Luo Mingyuan stepped aside to take the call.
A few minutes later, he hung up. “A new case just came in at the station. I have to get to work.”
“I’ll take these meals with me to finish. I’ll send someone to keep an eye on that person you mentioned. Once you’ve organized the list of materials you need, you can send it directly to Director Luo. He’s handling your logistics now.”
Fu Qingya’s situation was unique. The fewer people who knew of his existence, the better, to avoid him being targeted by foreign powers. Therefore, Director Luo, who held a high position and had collaborated with Fu Qingya several times, had taken over the coordination. He was currently responsible for Fu Qingya’s material requisitions.
Luo Mingyuan thought for a moment and added, “Contact us immediately if anything happens.”
Fu Qingya nodded. Luo Mingyuan lingered for a moment, then leaned toward the hospital bed. “Do you need me to lower the bed for you?”
Fu Qingya placed the damaged armor by his pillow and tucked his scalpel back into its place. The earring vanished, the silver chain hid itself, and he closed his eyes.
“If you wouldn’t mind. Lower it, please.”
His mental tentacles were currently withered and exhausted; he desperately needed sleep. Even though he was dying to study the abnormal genetic clusters in his body, he couldn’t squeeze anything more out of his mind right now. He just needed one day. After twenty-four hours, he would be back in peak condition to continue his research.
Luo Mingyuan carefully lowered the bed and pulled the blanket up over him.
“Get some rest. I’ll check on you tomorrow.”
With that, Luo Mingyuan grabbed the packed food and strode out of the room. Before leaving, he arranged for several nursing staff to provide Fu Qingya with attentive care.
However, Luo Mingyuan never expected that by the next day, Fu Qingya would use the “Head of State” as a shield to force his own discharge. By the time Luo Mingyuan finally found a gap in his busy schedule to visit, he learned from Luo Tianqi that Fu Qingya had taken some medication, insisted on leaving, and had someone drive him home.
“Xiao Fang, clean the underground lab.”
The moment Fu Qingya entered his laboratory, he gave the order to the approaching robot. Xiao Fang, who had been about to circle him happily, stopped instantly and turned to begin its diligent cleaning.
As a specially designed lab assistant, Xiao Fang could safely, quickly, and steadily clean the lab and all its components and equipment. While its intelligence wasn’t top-tier, for someone like Fu Qingya who didn’t like too much AI interference in his research, its cleaning capabilities were more than enough.
The robot worked fast. By the time Fu Qingya had looked through a few files, the lab was spotless. He tossed the damaged armor onto a mechanical table and pulled a blue-black cube from underneath.
Click, clack—
The cube, roughly the size of an adult man’s palm, rotated and unfolded into a familiar set of armor.
Fu Qingya unbuttoned his shirt, stripped to the waist, and donned the new armor. The hem of the blue-black suit turned liquid, flowing down to cover him below the waist. With a thought, the armor became invisible, revealing his lean upper body.
Exposed, Fu Qingya’s physique was strikingly masculine. His muscle definition was sharp, and his perfect V-line tapered down into his waistband, possessing a unique, powerful aesthetic. His skin was so tight there wasn’t a trace of excess fat. When he moved, the muscles in his torso looked ready to explode with startling power, giving him the aura of a predator in the forest.
Fu Qingya picked up his shirt and covered a physique that stood in stark contrast to his slightly youthful face.
“Retrieve all relevant data for the bio-electric field detection equipment,” he commanded, operating the smart system, Xiao Jin.
