The Frenzied Savior - Chapter 45
As the data for the bioelectric field detection instruments he had once memorized began to list out one by one, Fu Qingya became completely immersed in his research. Once he entered this state, he tended to forget both food and sleep.
Furthermore, he had a specific intent to let the intelligent system monitor the absolute limits of how long his mutated genome could support a body without sustenance, so he purposefully skipped his meals.
Tick, tock, tick, tock.
The specialized mechanical clock in the lab turned diligently, marking the rapid passage of time. Three days had passed since Fu Qingya entered the underground laboratory. Xiao Yuan, the robot responsible for his meals, was pacing anxiously outside the door, yet it didn’t dare take a single step inside without its master’s permission.
At this point, Fu Qingya had gone seventy-two hours without food or sleep. Strangely, aside from feeling a bit tired, he suffered no discomfort. It was as if his physical form had mutated into an organism that could survive solely on light. Even without eating, he was able to draw energy for biological activity through sunlight.
However, while his resequenced body could survive in the short term on light alone, its function was unfortunately limited to mere survival. Throughout this period, his primal human instinct to eat sent constant warnings. His psychological needs also pushed him toward sleep and nourishment, but to monitor the upper limits of his mutated genes, he forced himself to endure through sheer willpower.
Fighting against instinct was an unpleasant sensation. Fu Qingya’s face was now deathly pale, and his entire being radiated an aura of exhaustion. He looked like a powerful predator that had suddenly fallen ill, possessing a peculiar air of fragility.
As time ticked away, the survival instincts in his body began to scream.
“Has the limit been reached?” Fu Qingya calculated internally. While using his scalpel—now transformed into a specialized tool—to modify components, he instructed Xiao Jin to wrap up the limit-testing monitoring. He ordered Xiao Jin to open the laboratory doors and let Xiao Yuan in the moment he lost consciousness.
After giving his orders, Fu Qingya once again threw himself into the development of the device.
An hour later, the abnormal gene clusters in his body finally entered a dormant state due to the continuous, non-stop exertion. The converted light energy was fully depleted five minutes after that, and a wave of intense vertigo plunged him into a brief coma.
Xiao Jin, who had been monitoring Fu Qingya’s vitals, immediately unlocked the lab. Using high-level clearance, the AI ordered Xiao Yuan to carry Fu Qingya out and prepare food suitable for someone who hadn’t eaten in days.
Xiao Yuan rushed in and carefully moved Fu Qingya. Though it was supposed to be a soulless mechanical lifeform, the worry and urgency in its movements were visible to the naked eye. Its thick mechanical arms gently lifted him, slowly and cautiously placing him on the sofa before the robot scurried off to cook in a flurry of activity.
By the time Fu Qingya woke from his faint, Xiao Yuan had already moved a table to the side of the sofa. It stood there quietly, waiting for him with a tray of freshly cooked food.
“Thanks, Xiao Yuan. You did a great job.” Fu Qingya patted the robot’s rounded body, offering a word of praise in a much-improved mood.
An adorable emoticon immediately popped up on Xiao Yuan’s electronic screen, and its round body did a cheerful little spin on the spot. Its synthesized voice had a strange yet endearing lilt as it circled him, unable to contain its excitement. “Thank you for the compliment, Master! Xiao Yuan will work even harder!”
Fu Qingya chuckled softly, leaned back against the sofa, and began to eat. For the first time since his rebirth, he ate slowly and meticulously.
Based on years of experience with his “forgetting food and sleep” habits, he knew that after a long fast, one needed soft, easily digestible food consumed at a slow pace. Otherwise, he would face stomach distress—a sensation even he disliked. Such an ailment was difficult to treat and would only delay his subsequent work, so he was particularly careful.
Once he had soothed his body’s loud demands for food, Fu Qingya pulled up the data set regarding his reconstructed genetic limits. The data was exhaustive. From these figures, he discovered the immense hidden potential within the abnormal gene clusters. These clusters were constantly infecting and optimizing his reconstructed biological genes, pushing him toward a more powerful state.
Whenever his internal systems reached a limit and fell into a state of lethargy, the activity within the abnormal clusters would suddenly accelerate. Then, the fading systems would remarkably regain their vitality, restarting and providing a continuous supply of the energy his body required.
Comparing this to all existing biological genomes on Earth, Fu Qingya still couldn’t find a matching genetic map. Clearly, this set of abnormal clusters, much like his reconstructed biological chain, did not belong to any known organism on the planet. The lack of a genetic map meant he could only rely on self-experimentation to understand the traits of these two chains.
Fu Qingya was filled with anticipation.
Even more pleasing was that during this period of genetic testing, he had made a major breakthrough in his hardware development. Graphite and white jade had successfully replaced Galaxy A48’s й and э elements as the core materials for the bioelectric field detection instrument.
This was a peculiar discovery. To some extent, graphite and white jade do not possess usable energy, but when Fu Qingya inadvertently used his mental strength to modify them, they underwent an unexpected fusion and mutation, forming an entirely new material.
This sparked a new idea. Based on a certain hypothesis, he once again utilized his mental strength to attempt organic fusions of various other materials. However, perhaps due to a variable he hadn’t precisely controlled, every other experiment ended in failure except for the graphite and jade combination. The original properties of the test materials were destroyed, leaving behind nothing but extreme hardness, which was useless to him.
Tossing the failed scraps into the crate intended for the deal with Country A, Fu Qingya used the new material for repeated trials until he obtained the relevant data to substitute the Galaxy A48 core components. Progress was modest, but it was cause for celebration. Now that the core materials had been successfully replaced by Earth’s resources, completing the bioelectric field detection instrument was merely a matter of time.
Soon, he would be able to verify whether his original suspicions were correct.
After organizing the data once more, Fu Qingya was about to head to the bedroom to rest when a somewhat hurried doorbell rang. He opened the door to find a familiar, tall figure standing before him.
“What are you doing here?”
“Well, for certain reasons, I was reported by a victim’s family, so the higher-ups suspended me for a while.”
“My boss’s boss thinks I’m unreasonable, lost his temper, gave me a bit of a thrashing, and kicked me out of the house.”
The visitor walked into the house past Fu Qingya with practiced familiarity, then turned around with a pitiful tone, begging for a place to stay. “Kind friend, how about taking me in for a bit?”
