- Chapter 5 - Asking the Name and Defending
Inside the ship’s cabin, there were two rooms on each side, and one room at the far end. A bright, glowing pearl was hung at the entrance of that room, making it look indistinguishable from any ordinary dwelling at first glance.
Wen Yu walked to the innermost room, pushed the door open, and stood aside, allowing Xiao Yu to enter first.
Xiao Yu tiptoed cautiously into the room.
As soon as she stepped inside, she immediately felt warm all over.
In the room, a bed was placed on the left side. A window, facing the door, was set into the wall. Outside the window, it was pitch dark, and nothing could be seen.
Beneath the window was a table with two chairs on either side.
The furnishings were simple, but she could see signs of Wen Yu’s use, indicating this was likely his private room.
Wen Yu closed the door, walked to the table, disassembled his jade flute, and placed it on the table. He sat on the right chair, his posture erect.
He lifted his gaze and, seeing Xiao Yu still standing by the door, called out, “Come and sit.”
Xiao Yu shuffled over and sat down slowly. Seeing Wen Yu’s stern demeanor, she was certain he was about to interrogate her.
She lowered her head, her fox ears casting a shadow on the table.
After a short wait, she heard Wen Yu’s voice.
It sounded like being lectured by a head teacher.
“You said earlier that you were sent by the Demon Lord to lure me.”
The word “lure” abruptly spoken by Wen Yu made Xiao Yu tremble. Thinking of his previous statement about having her “lure him to see,” she grew nervous.
It’s coming, it’s coming. Is Wen Yu going to say that she should start luring him now?
No, she couldn’t do such a thing. Telling that stinky bird that was merely a tactic to survive; she never planned to actually go through with it.
“But I don’t do things like that,” Xiao Yu hurriedly explained, emphasizing again: “I might have done some bad things to Daozhang before, but now I’ve realized my mistake. I am absolutely on Daozhang’s side and definitely will not harm you.”
Xiao Yu spoke at great length, yet she saw Wen Yu watching her without even a frown, his face expressionless, which made her uneasy.
He’s not secretly planning how to eliminate her, is he?
It’s really difficult being a demon these days. No one believes you even when you tell the truth.
Darn it! Why didn’t she transmigrate into the body of a normal person!
Xiao Yu stopped talking, lowering her head to look at the glowing pearl on the table.
The light from the pearl shone out the window, showing the flying vessel slowly drifting.
A wisp of breeze drifted in, blowing Wen Yu’s loose strands of hair.
He was watching Xiao Yu.
Wen Yu rarely smiled. If he did, his eyes resembled peach blossom eyes, and a slight hint of a smile would soften his entire demeanor, making people think he was easy to approach.
However, at this moment, his eyes were deep and sharp, carrying scrutiny and judgment.
She was indeed completely different from when they first met.
This demon had previously brazenly released her seductive charm, and upon seeing him, had only briefly shown fear, with all other emotions being calculation.
But now, this demon only displayed a simplicity that could be seen through with a single glance.
In less than an hour, she had shown two completely different personalities.
Either they had adopted a new tactic, pretending to be delicate and innocent to approach him, or there was a different person inside this shell.
His sharp gaze instantly saw through the fox spirit; the latter possibility was greater.
“Daozhang, do you not believe anything I’ve said?”
Their eyes met. In the young girl’s undisguised demon pupils, the light brown irises, illuminated by the pearl, were as clear and translucent as amber, beautiful like a treasure.
The emotion revealed inside was extremely simple: only confusion.
A very simple confusion, plainly asking Wen Yu why he didn’t believe her.
Wen Yu turned slightly toward her, his finger pressed on the jade flute, and said, “The Demon Clan has always been incompatible with the Human Clan, harming the human race. The usual outcome for those who easily trust a demon is not good.”
Xiao Yu nodded as if she understood, yet didn’t.
“But I’m not like that. I was just—”
Realizing her quick tongue, Xiao Yu immediately stopped and quickly tried to compensate: “I was forced. In fact, I am a good demon.”
Who told her that she transmigrated into a demon who stood against the human race? She had no choice but to temporarily accept this identity.
But fundamentally, she was a human! A good person!
“What you said earlier, none of it was false?”
Xiao Yu immediately nodded: “Absolutely not a single false word!”
She had no memory of the original body and had told him all the plot points she remembered. She couldn’t fabricate anything even if she wanted to.
Wen Yu nodded gently, temporarily skipping this topic to ask about something else.
“Earlier in the Demon Domain, when I killed the demon beast that broke into the room, did you notice anything unusual?” After asking this question, Wen Yu stared at Xiao Yu without blinking, tightening his hand on the jade flute.
Xiao Yu recalled carefully, not feeling anything was amiss.
According to the book’s setting, Wen Yu’s cultivation was extremely high; instantly killing a demon beast was easy.
She shook her head and said no.
The young girl spoke candidly, showing no sign of lying.
Wen Yu relaxed his grip and moved back slightly. He dispelled his killing intent, concluding that she had not noticed his anomaly.
“Do you have anything to add regarding the Demon Lord sending you to kill me?”
He focused his gaze on the girl, seeing her sink into thought.
The fox ears atop her head were quite distracting.
Wen Yu watched for a moment, then subtly moved his gaze away, a hint of surprise rising in his heart.
Demon beasts, upon reaching a certain level of cultivation, can transform into human form and speak human language.
According to what he had seen, this demon’s previous human form perfectly concealed its demon features. How was it that with a new person inside the shell, even the fox ears were exposed?
In his heart, he began to believe her previous statement slightly more.
“I haven’t actually met the vil— the Demon Lord. I only know they ordered me to kill you. That stinky bird just now injured my shoulder and also wanted to take the opportunity to kill you.” At this, Xiao Yu suddenly felt the pain in her shoulder, which she had ignored due to the earlier tension.
“I lied to it, saying I would continue to gain your trust, and that stopped it,” Xiao Yu gradually calmed down, no longer afraid. “Daozhang, look, they might come looking for me again. At that time, I can tell you all their plans, so you can avoid being harmed.”
“You’ll get a spy for free, and if anything happens to anyone, I can even help.”
Xiao Yu then remembered a character she had missed: “That stinky bird was sent by someone named Lord Chunhu. Daozhang, do you know who that is?”
After rattling off a long string of words, Xiao Yu only received a single word:
“Mm.”
Wen Yu straightened up and leaned against the back of the chair, taking his hand off the jade flute and clasping it with the other.
Humans and demons had not had conflict for nearly a hundred years. Why did the Demon Lord suddenly want to kill him?
Was he taking action in secret?
And why would he send a demon beast instead of a demon?
“Daozhang, are you listening to me?”
Xiao Yu observed Wen Yu’s profile, sighing internally at how handsome he was.
In her original world, this level of attractiveness was once-in-a-lifetime.
“I’ll trust you for now.” After saying this, his peripheral vision caught the girl’s undisguised delight. Wen Yu tapped the table with his hand: “But if you harbor any intent to harm others—”
Xiao Yu immediately promised: “No way! My entire person and heart are entirely on Daozhang’s side!”
Are you kidding? She was desperate to stay by Wen Yu’s side. How could she have any ulterior motives?
Right now, staying by Wen Yu’s side was the safest option.
Immersed in joy, Xiao Yu didn’t realize how explicit her words were. Wen Yu gave Xiao Yu a strange look, then told her to leave: “Do not enter the two rooms on the right side of the cabin. You may choose any room on the left side to stay in for the night.”
Xiao Yu immediately thanked him: “Thank you, Daozhang! Daozhang, you truly are a great good person!”
But she was still sitting there.
Wen Yu lifted his eyes to look at her.
“Um… I have an injury on my shoulder. Could you give me some medicine to apply?”
Xiao Yu didn’t dare mention the wounds on her face and feet. The one on her face was no longer bleeding, but she feared it would leave a scar.
Wen Yu scanned her cheeks and shoulders, said nothing, and simply handed her a porcelain bottle.
“Apply it to the wound. It won’t leave a scar.”
Xiao Yu accepted the bottle with both hands and thanked him again.
“Daozhang is so kind! Truly a great good person!”
Since meeting this demon, Wen Yu didn’t know how many times he had heard “thank you” or been called a “good person.”
He let out a nearly inaudible, self-mocking laugh.
He was not a good person. These hands were stained with fresh blood, and perhaps the next blood to stain his clothes would be this demon’s.
Xiao Yu stood up, clutching the porcelain bottle. As soon as she moved, the wound on her foot began to hurt. She grimaced and limped toward the door.
Just as she was about to open it, she heard Wen Yu ask, “Do you have a name?”
Xiao Yu opened the door, turned her head, and said, “My name is Xiao Yu. Xiao from Hongxiao (Crimson Silk), and Yu from Wuyu (Without Worry).”
After speaking, she bid Wen Yu farewell: “Daozhang, I’m off now.”
Xiao Yu turned and left, closing the door behind her.
Before the door completely shut, Xiao Yu saw Wen Yu raising his hand and taking the emerald jade flute from the table.
That was Wen Yu’s Benming Faki (Lifeline Artifact), the Flute-Sword.
Human cultivators here would all have their own Lifeline Artifacts. After achieving Renqi Heyi (the fusion of person and artifact) with their Lifeline Artifact, they could change the artifact’s shape at will.
Thus, Wen Yu could shatter the jade flute and then reassemble it into a sword.
Xiao Yu looked on with envy. If only she could also have such a spectacular artifact.
Speaking of which, if the shape could change, could the color also change?
After killing that demon beast, the green jade flute had turned red, and Wen Yu had even used that red flute to lift her chin.
Recalling that scene, Xiao Yu suddenly realized something was wrong.
Wen Yu at that time was not his usual cold, businesslike self; at that moment, he had been entirely wicked and sinister.
Xiao Yu abruptly spun around to look at Wen Yu’s room door.
Could that be the “anomaly” he asked if she had seen?
No, she must keep silent about it.
Xiao Yu clutched her heart and went to find a room to sleep in.
The rooms on the left side… Only after carefully figuring out exactly which side was the left did she find the correct room.
She opened the door, and the structure was the same as Wen Yu’s room.
She immediately closed the door and bolted it. Xiao Yu threw herself onto the bed and rolled over contentedly. After taking off her outer garment, she found that her body was already dry, even her hair.
She thought to herself that Wen Yu’s room was truly effective.
After struggling to apply medicine to her shoulder, Xiao Yu burrowed into the quilt, wrapped herself tightly, and closed her eyes to sleep.
However, she was woken up in the middle of the night.
Drowsily, she heard a sound like scratching, and when she opened her eyes, she saw a mass of black mist.
The black mist bared its teeth at her and let out a terrifying voice: “Why haven’t you killed Wen Yu yet?”
