- Chapter 6 - Threatened by a Demon
She felt as if she had ascended to heaven.
After a night of fleeing, she finally got some sleep. Not only was she woken up, but the moment she opened her eyes, she saw a mass of black mist glaring menacingly at her, asking why she hadn’t gone to kill someone.
Her brain hadn’t fully recovered, but her body reacted first. Xiaoyu instinctively whipped up the bedding and lunged it fiercely at the black mist.
Then, she instantly shrank back towards the foot of the bed.
The bedding struck the black mist, covering it completely on the floor.
Xiaoyu stared intently at the raised mound of bedding.
The spot where the black mist was located blocked the path to the main door. The luminous pearl in the room was bright, yet no sound could be heard from outside.
Ahhh! Why didn’t Wen Yu notice this strange thing! Come and drive it away quickly!
Something was moving beneath the bedding, emitting a sizzling sound. Xiaoyu stared, trembling with fear, when she suddenly saw the raised area collapse and flatten.
“!”
Did it escape? Or…?
The bedding on the floor suddenly began to writhe, swelling and shrinking, and slowly moving towards Xiaoyu.
Xiaoyu’s body went rigid, as if she were frozen in place, utterly motionless.
Could it be another assassin sent to kill Wen Yu?
The thing finally reached the edge of the bedding. The corner of the quilt lifted, revealing a fist-sized, spherical, pitch-black object.
Two tiny, red-bean-sized eyes seemed plastered onto it, giving it a weirdly comical look.
It looked just like a lump of coal, round and without limbs.
The coal lump leaned against the corner of the quilt, its small eyes lifting to look at Xiaoyu, and then—
Grinning with its white teeth, it spoke in a very faint voice, sounding like a small animal whimpering.
“You… why did you hit me with the quilt?”
Xiaoyu was stunned.
Wait, that huge mass of black mist with that terrifying gaping mouth—how did it turn into a lump of coal?
The coal lump hopped, jumped onto the bed, and rolled over to Xiaoyu’s feet.
Its small, bead-like eyes spun dizzily a few times before it finally located Xiaoyu.
It looked completely unthreatening, more like a certain type of pet, appearing dull and cute, and its voice sounded very young.
Xiaoyu bravely reached out and poked it. She touched something icy cold, like winter mist, lacking any solid substance.
Before she could withdraw her finger, the coal lump quickly retreated on its own, avoiding Xiaoyu’s hand.
“You… you, how rude!”
The coal lump rolled to the opposite corner of the bed, putting as much distance between itself and Xiaoyu as possible.
Xiaoyu grew interested.
“Weren’t you very imposing just now? Why did you shrink so much now?” Xiaoyu lowered her voice and glanced towards the door.
With the immediate danger gone, she now hoped Wen Yu wouldn’t discover it, or she would have to expend effort explaining things again.
The coal lump sounded very aggrieved: “You scared me. The demonic qi I painstakingly gathered dispersed, so I could only shrink my form.”
Xiaoyu was irritated and amused.
She was the one who was scared, yet this little thing was shifting the blame first.
“Who sent you? Wen Yu is right here. Aren’t you afraid of being caught?” Xiaoyu relaxed her body and leaned against the wall. She thought to herself, This is truly a world of immortal heroes; there are all sorts of strange and unusual creatures.
“The Demon Lord sent me to supervise you, to see if you had killed Wen Yu,” the coal lump bounced once. “I’m not afraid at all. The Demon Lord gave me a magical artifact that can conceal demonic qi. They can’t discover me.”
“Mmm-hmm, you’re amazing.” In the original book, the original body had very few scenes, and there was absolutely no mention of the smelly bird or this demon showing up.
Feeling no danger, Xiaoyu relaxed, got off the bed, picked up the bedding, dusted it off, lay back down, covered herself, and continued to sleep.
“If you want to kill him, you kill him. I’m not going.” Xiaoyu didn’t want to go; she didn’t have the courage or the ability.
It was night. She needed rest and refused to work overtime; absolutely out of the question.
The coal lump became agitated, hopping next to Xiaoyu’s exposed cheek. It extended a hand made of black mist and tried to pull at the bedding.
“No, you must go. If you don’t kill Wen Yu, how are we supposed to report back?”
Its strength was too small; the bedding didn’t budge.
The coal lump simply sat on the pillow and began to nag: “If we kill Wen Yu, the Demon Lord will definitely reward us. Hurry up and get up, hurry up.”
Xiaoyu’s closed eyes suddenly snapped open, her pupils contracting into a line under the light.
She suddenly realized a problem.
She had never seen the Demon Lord, and there were no other demons or monsters around her, so how had she been precisely found twice in a row?
The smelly bird from before might have been following the original body all along, but what about this demon that just snuck in?
The Demon Lord wouldn’t be constantly monitoring me, would he!
Is it just a coincidence that right after I boarded Wen Yu’s ship, this demon was sent to urge me to kill him?
However…
Xiaoyu looked at the coal lump, which posed no threat whatsoever, and was puzzled.
Logically speaking, to kill someone as powerful as Wen Yu, shouldn’t the Demon Lord send a powerful demon? What was the use of sending this little ball?
Xiaoyu reached out and poked it again; it was icy cold.
But this elicited an alarmed cry from the coal lump: “Don’t poke me! If you poke me again, I’ll disperse!”
The coal lump quickly retreated, hiding itself behind the pillow until it vanished.
Xiaoyu found the coal lump behind the pillow and slapped it with her palm, which was followed by a slight cracking sound.
Black mist scattered from between her fingers. She lifted her hand to look, and it had indeed dispersed.
Is this demon really that weak?
Xiaoyu looked around and didn’t see the coal lump again. She lay her head down and was about to sleep, when she suddenly heard the sound of bells, and moments later, a hurried knocking on the door.
“Open the door!”
It was Duanmu Ying’s voice.
Xiaoyu immediately opened her eyes, her heart skipping a beat. Could I have been discovered?
She put on her clothes and got out of bed, checking around as she walked toward the door. The bright room held no trace of the demon from just now.
As soon as she opened the door, Duanmu Ying pushed Xiaoyu aside, rushed into the room, and searched everywhere.
Seeing her demeanor, Xiaoyu knew the demon had probably been discovered.
It was supposed to have a magical artifact to conceal its demonic qi. How unreliable.
Duanmu Ying searched the room, found nothing, then turned and looked at Xiaoyu. Seeing her barefoot, she muttered, “A beast is a beast; always lacking proper decorum.”
She then straightened her face and questioned Xiaoyu: “Why is there demonic qi in your room? Speak! Did you hide a demon intending to harm someone?”
Xiaoyu felt misunderstood and frustrated.
She was single-mindedly pursuing the path of immortality, yet too many demons and monsters were getting in her way.
“I didn’t,” Xiaoyu stated truthfully. “A strange thing woke me up just now, and I hit it with one palm. It completely vanished.”
She hadn’t seen the coal lump, and Duanmu Ying hadn’t found it either.
“The Demon-Slaying Bell has already rung; are you saying you didn’t?” Duanmu Ying scoffed, not believing Xiaoyu. “Come with me to see Master. I’d like to see if you’re still this stubborn in front of him.”
Duanmu Ying grabbed Xiaoyu’s arm and pulled her towards the outside.
The movement was rough and tugged at the wound on Xiaoyu’s shoulder.
The pain had lessened considerably after the medicine was applied and she had rested for a while, but the tugging made it start hurting again.
“Let go. I can walk myself.”
Duanmu Ying contemptuously flung her arm away and deliberately went behind Xiaoyu: “Hurry up and walk!”
Xiaoyu had no choice but to start moving.
As she walked toward the end of the ship’s cabin, she glanced around with the corner of her eye, but she didn’t see any bell-like object. Where did the ringing come from?
Upon reaching the door, Duanmu Ying stepped forward first, knocked three times, and waited at the doorway.
After a long wait, Wen Yu’s voice finally came from inside the room.
“What is it?”
“Master, the Demon-Slaying Bell in this demon’s room rang. She absolutely intends to harm someone and hid a demon in the room. She stubbornly refuses to admit it. I’ve brought her here, Master. You must deal with her properly.”
Duanmu Ying glared at Xiaoyu, specifically emphasizing the words “deal with her properly.”
Xiaoyu involuntarily looked surprised.
No wonder Duanmu Ying was so certain; the bell was in the room.
That demon’s artifact must have worked for a little while, otherwise the bell would have rung the moment it appeared.
After waiting a moment, she heard Wen Yu’s voice: “Enter.”
As if Xiaoyu had already been convicted, Duanmu Ying whispered to her, “You wait and see.”
Then, she pushed the door open and pulled Xiaoyu inside.
Xiaoyu immediately saw Wen Yu still sitting in the chair, his posture virtually unchanged from when she had left earlier.
However, the room seemed less warm than before, the light was much dimmer, the pearl on the table wasn’t glowing, and the window was closed.
His eyelashes slightly lifted, Wen Yu glanced at the two of them, and a hint of impatience in his eyes was concealed by the darkness.
“Speak,” he said, gripping the jade flute tightly, his knuckles turning white from the force.
Duanmu Ying spoke first: “I heard the Demon-Slaying Bell ring, so I went to this demon’s room, but I couldn’t find any trace of the demon. Instead, this demon was awake and acting suspiciously; she must have hidden the demon.”
Xiaoyu’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Wait, hadn’t I just explained it? It seems like you didn’t listen at all.
“I was sleeping soundly and was woken up by a strange thing. When I woke up, I saw a pitch-black thing, and I slapped it, and it dispersed,” Xiaoyu emphasized again. “It came on its own; it has nothing to do with me.”
“Nonsense! If you didn’t invite them, how could they have gotten—”
Duanmu Ying hadn’t finished speaking when Wen Yu raised his hand and flicked his spiritual energy into Xiaoyu’s body. Moments later, clusters of black mist rose from the hand Xiaoyu had used to slap the coal lump, gathering into a sphere.
Xiaoyu was stunned.
This demon is still here?
The coal lump was trapped in mid-air. It opened its bead-like eyes and bared its teeth.
Simultaneously, the sound of the bell rang out in the room, like a verdict.
Duanmu Ying immediately drew her sword and pointed it at the coal lump: “Are you still denying it? This is the evidence!”
Xiaoyu blinked, looked at the coal lump, and then looked toward Wen Yu. The light was so dim that she could barely make out the expression on his face.
It’s over. Now, I can’t even argue my innocence.
“I already slapped this thing until it dispersed. How was I supposed to know it was still around?”
“Quibbling! Master has already discovered it, and you still won’t admit it!” Duanmu Ying advanced toward Xiaoyu, and her sword looked as if it were about to pierce Xiaoyu’s chest.
Xiaoyu’s heart leaped into her throat. Just as she was about to speak, she heard Wen Yu’s voice ring out like a savior.
“You may leave. I will question her myself.”
Duanmu Ying sheathed her sword, gave a cold snort, turned, and left the room.
The demonic qi around the coal lump scattered. Its closed eyes fused with the black mist, making it impossible to tell its front from its back.
Wen Yu stood up and walked step by step toward Xiaoyu. His hair fell forward, obscuring his dark, turbulent eyes.
The jade flute held in his hand had a faint red tinge spreading from its end.
He walked past the captured demon and stopped in front of Xiaoyu.
“Did you bring this demon?”
