- Chapter 16 - Phantasmal Demon Form, From Behind
Xiaoyu smiled, expressed her thanks, and walked toward the exit under the woman’s gaze.
After a few steps, she turned back to ask for the woman’s name, but she was already gone.
She had no choice but to head for the exit.
After the woman helped suppress the sensation, Xiaoyu felt much more relaxed, and the earlier agitation she felt upon entering the Desert Demon Territory had also dissipated.
She safely exited the Demon Territory, only to see an endless sea of sand; Wen Yu was nowhere to be found.
“No, where is he?”
Xiaoyu spun around, unable to see anyone, not even the demons who had come out with her.
The sand beneath her feet was warm. Only then did she realize that her shoes had been lost at the entrance.
Xiaoyu looked at the boundless desert, suddenly experiencing a strong sense of loneliness and unfamiliarity.
For the first time, she felt so intuitively how vast this world was; standing in this immense desert, a person felt incredibly tiny.
In this comparison, Xiaoyu clearly realized that she had to establish roots in this strange and marvelous world and stubbornly survive.
Whether it was with her original identity as a “human” or the “demon” identity of this body.
Survival is her only goal.
A thought suddenly arose in her mind.
Since she is alone now, she could completely ignore Wen Yu and leave directly.
But what then? How could she ensure she wouldn’t be hunted down by the villain, or die at the hands of human cultivators?
No matter how she looked at it, temporarily seeking Wen Yu’s protection seemed to be the only path.
Xiaoyu blinked, took a deep breath, as if cheering herself on: “I can do this!”
Xiaoyu exerted all her strength, trying to reproduce the inherent divine ability she had used that night.
But she failed. Still, she didn’t give up.
Thinking of it differently, if she couldn’t use the divine ability, using demonic power would also work.
Xiaoyu concentrated, staring at the sand beneath her feet, focusing her mind on one spot.
It seemed that by focusing on a single point, what she saw became exceptionally clear.
Her whole body seemed to boil. A surge of power quickly swept from her mind through her entire body, gathering at her heart and lungs, spreading a warm current throughout.
She could sense that this was her body’s original power.
Her mind suddenly became clear. Xiaoyu raised her hand and pointed. A force struck the ground, whipping up wind and sand directly towards her face.
Xiaoyu choked on a few mouthfuls of sand. Spitting it out, she still felt happy.
She had figured out how to use demonic power.
Following the previous sensation, she waved her hand again, and the demonic power went where her mind directed it.
“Great!” Xiaoyu wiped the sand from her face and was about to use her demonic power to locate Wen Yu, but she hesitated before using the power.
Does she really still want to follow Wen Yu…?
Should she find Wen Yu, or should she enter the Demon Territory and find a demon beast to learn demon techniques?
The demon beasts in the territory definitely knew many cultivation methods, but it wasn’t safe. If she sought Wen Yu, she would have to wait until his second disciple, Yan Ziqiong, appeared, and he might not be as good as other demon beasts.
She looked up into the distance. Her vision was filled with endless sand.
How about I look for a demon beast to learn demon techniques first, and then…
Just as this thought emerged, she suddenly heard a shout. Xiaoyu’s body trembled, and she looked up.
“You really are here!”
She saw a young woman flying towards her on a sword. In the blink of an eye, she was in front of Xiaoyu.
Seeing Duanmu Ying certainly means nothing good.
The next second, Wen Yu’s figure materialized, stepping out of the void. Seeing Xiaoyu, he walked up to her.
Seeing this, Duanmu Ying put away her sword and landed behind Wen Yu, glaring at Xiaoyu.
The sight of Wen Yu made Xiaoyu inevitably feel guilty. She had just been planning to abandon him and seek survival on her own, and now she was caught red-handed.
“Taoist Priest, I know how to get in!” She quickly revealed her discovery. Her previous plans had to be temporarily shelved.
Wen Yu didn’t speak. Instead, he shifted his gaze to the location of the restriction he had placed on Xiaoyu.
He carefully sensed it; the restriction had not been broken. It must be that when she used her demonic power just now, she touched the restriction, activating it to transmit her location to him.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been able to find Xiaoyu.
“Tell us, how do we get in?” Duanmu Ying stepped forward, though she didn’t point her sword at Xiaoyu this time.
Although she looked down on this demon, with her Senior Brother captured, only this demon could lead them into the Demon Territory, so she had to suppress her dissatisfaction.
Xiaoyu pretended not to hear and ignored Duanmu Ying, saying only to Wen Yu: “When I missed my step just now, I fell into a place filled with demon beasts. That should be the Desert Demon Territory you’re looking for.”
Wen Yu asked about something other than the territory: “You came out by yourself?”
His gaze towards Xiaoyu held scrutiny, so sharp it seemed capable of penetrating everything.
Xiaoyu only looked once, not daring to meet those eyes, and whispered: “I met an older sister inside. She helped me.”
She thought for a moment and decided to tell the truth. In front of the strongest Sword Venerable in the Human Race, she felt it best not to play tricks.
“I asked that sister, and she said that as long as we use a fox hair to taint ourselves with demonic qi, we can enter.”
Upon saying this, the two people in front of Xiaoyu both looked at her.
Duanmu Ying was about to object, but subconsciously glanced at Wen Yu and dared not speak.
Wen Yu looked at the fox ears on top of Xiaoyu’s head. The pair of fox ears, with a color as brilliant as the sunset, stood perfectly upright, covered in fine fuzz.
His gaze moved down, only to see the fox’s eyes darting away. Seeing him look over, she quickly guaranteed that her words were true.
“Alright, do you want me to do it, or will you do it yourself?”
Xiaoyu couldn’t help but feel that his words sounded like he was about to execute a demon.
“I’ll do it myself…”
She covered her fox ears with her hands. The fluffy ears twitched in her palm, sending a tingling sensation throughout her body.
She still hadn’t fully adapted to this pair of ears.
Her index finger and thumb pinched together. As soon as she pulled, the slight sharp pain made her stop her hand.
She did manage to pull off a few reddish-brown hairs.
Xiaoyu stared at the hairs, feeling somewhat helpless, holding the fox hairs stiffly in her hand, looking rather dumbfounded.
A hand reached over and plucked one out.
The long, slender fingers twirled the fox hair. A flash of faint golden light, and the fur vanished, replaced by a change in Wen Yu.
Upon seeing the new addition to Wen Yu’s appearance, Xiaoyu accidentally burst into laughter, earning a warning glare from Duanmu Ying.
“What are you laughing at? Haven’t you seen someone use a demon object for transformation?”
A pair of ears emerged from the top of Wen Yu’s head. They looked no different from Xiaoyu’s fox ears, except their color was an interweaving of azure green and crimson, like ink flowing in water, strikingly beautiful.
This pair of fox ears, contrasting sharply with his stern, unsmiling expression, looked very strange on him.
Xiaoyu truly hadn’t known that Wen Yu would transform into this appearance after taking her fox hair.
“Ahem, they’re quite good-looking…”
Her hands were itching, wanting to reach out and touch and rub those ears, but seeing Wen Yu’s face, devoid of any smile, she had to suppress the urge.
She didn’t have the guts yet.
Wen Yu signaled Duanmu Ying to do the same and stepped back. He stood tall and straight, and the demon ears on his head were also perfectly rigid, just like their owner.
Duanmu Ying took the fox hair, her look of disdain completely unconcealed.
“If we hadn’t been unfamiliar with the Desert Demon Territory and didn’t know this method, we wouldn’t need your fur at all.”
With a flash of spiritual energy, a pair of demon ears also appeared on top of Duanmu Ying’s head, but they were a different style, black and white.
Xiaoyu glanced at them and decided they weren’t as good-looking as Wen Yu’s.
After only a moment, the desert seemed to receive a command. A fierce wind suddenly rose, and sand rolled across the ground.
Not far from the three of them, the sand sank, revealing a hole several meters in diameter. The wind and sand subsided.
“Is that the entrance?”
The Demon Territory entrance sensed the unified demonic qi and opened itself.
Duanmu Ying approached first, standing at the edge and looking inside: “It’s pitch-black in there. Nothing is visible.”
“I landed shortly after I fell in,” Xiaoyu stood at the back, feeling they weren’t particularly anxious.
Nan Chenghui was captured, but only Duanmu Ying seemed slightly urgent; Wen Yu seemed to have no reaction at all.
Just as she was distracted by this thought, she suddenly met Wen Yu’s dark eyes. His gaze sent a shiver down her spine.
“What is it, Taoist Priest?”
“Did you meet an ‘older sister’ in there?”
Xiaoyu nodded: “Yes, she should be from the Pure Fox lineage.”
Is that the same concept as Qingqiu or Tushan?
Wen Yu merely nodded upon hearing this and didn’t ask further.
“Follow me closely, all of you.”
He dropped this sentence, turned, and headed towards the entrance.
Xiaoyu saw that Duanmu Ying was already waiting at the entrance.
She pursed her lips and hurried to follow.
“You jump first,” Duanmu Ying said unceremoniously.
Xiaoyu looked at Wen Yu, and seeing him give her an affirming look, she had no choice but to close her eyes and jump.
She had already fallen in once; doing it again didn’t scare her.
The familiar sensation of falling rushed over. As soon as she landed on solid ground, before she could start looking for people, she heard Wen Yu’s voice.
“I am behind you.”
A sense of security suddenly washed over her. Turning around, she faced Wen Yu’s demon ears, which were fluffy and beautiful in color.
Wen Yu was bent over, busy with something. His upper body was lowered, placing his ears at a height Xiaoyu could reach by standing on her tiptoes.
Her heart fluttered. On an impulse, she reached out to touch the demon ears.
Just as her hand reached halfway, Wen Yu straightened up. Seeing Xiaoyu’s outstretched hand, he looked at her in confusion.
Xiaoyu, however, saw Wen Yu’s face look as if a layer of fog was obscuring it; she couldn’t see clearly. A moment later, his appearance changed.
“Taoist Priest, you are…”
Wen Yu explained: “This makes things easier.”
Duanmu Ying, who had followed them, was the same.
Xiaoyu carefully observed them a few times, finding it quite magical.
“Can I learn that?” As soon as she asked, she heard a laugh coming from behind her.
Wen Yu shook his head: “This is a Human Race technique and cannot be shared with the Demon Race.”
“I see.” Xiaoyu wasn’t discouraged. She thought the Demon Race should have similar techniques.
Wen Yu wanted to say something, but ultimately didn’t.
“Let’s go.”
He stepped forward, and Xiaoyu followed behind him.
Glancing over and seeing Duanmu Ying about to walk abreast with her, Xiaoyu quickly stepped away for a distance.
She absolutely didn’t want to walk alongside Duanmu Ying!
Upon reaching the entrance, they saw the two demon beasts guarding the gate from last time.
The demon beast holding the iron hammer remembered Xiaoyu’s appearance. Seeing her approach, he greeted her with familiarity: “Elder, you’ve returned so soon. Please come in quickly.”
Xiaoyu walked straight inside, not looking sideways.
Before she had taken two steps, she heard the demon beast’s suspicious voice.
The demon beast was inspecting Wen Yu: “Why does your demonic qi smell so strange? What are you here for?”
Xiaoyu’s heart leaped. She quickly turned to look.
They’ve been discovered.
