- Chapter 17 - Meeting an Old Friend, Demon Gold
Turning around, she saw the demon beast swinging his iron hammer and smashing it into the wall. Sand and dust scattered everywhere.
This action by the demon beast immediately caused a commotion, and the other gate-guarding demon beast was about to rush over.
Xiaoyu hesitated for a moment. Seeing Duanmu Ying quickly walk towards the demon beast, her hand resting on her sword hilt, Xiaoyu took a step back.
They are so powerful, they should be able to handle it themselves.
But she saw Wen Yu’s gaze directed at her. His eyes were deep, but paired with the demon ears on his head, it turned into a look of request.
Xiaoyu forced herself to step forward: “He was brought by me.”
She then pointed at Duanmu Ying, who had stopped: “And her, she is too.”
When Xiaoyu spoke these sentences to the demon beast, she naturally used the demon language, which the other two couldn’t understand.
The demon beast turned to look at Xiaoyu, his face wreathed in a smile: “Since they were brought by the Elder, then let the Elder bring them in.”
Seeing this, Xiaoyu lightly coughed and called out to them: “The two of you, hurry up and follow me.”
To be honest, doing something like “borrowing a tiger’s prestige” felt genuinely satisfying.
In the past, her boss would yell at her; now, she could yell at others too.
Her arrogant demeanor was noticed by Wen Yu. A fallen leaf floated across the placid waters of his heart, causing a faint ripple that quickly subsided back into stillness.
“Good.” Wen Yu parted his lips and responded.
Even with his appearance concealed, his overall aura could not be ignored.
The demon beast scrutinized Wen Yu, sniffing hard. He moved closer to Xiaoyu, pointing at Wen Yu as if offering a treasure.
“The words the Elder spoke to them just now must be the Human Race language. These two must be the Elder’s human slaves.” He spoke in the demon language, which only Xiaoyu understood.
“I took a careful sniff, and his whole body carries the Elder’s scent. We have a type of Demon Contract here, Elder. If you enter into it with a human slave and discipline them, you will definitely train them to be a hundred times more obedient.”
“No need.” Xiaoyu ignored him, beckoned Wen Yu behind her with her lowered hand, and continued walking.
With the crisis averted, Duanmu Ying sheathed her sword. Seeing the demon beast’s immediate change in attitude, opening the way for them to enter, she followed Wen Yu inside, her gaze switching between the demon beast and Xiaoyu, suppressing the suspicion in her heart.
After walking for some distance, Xiaoyu finally stopped and turned around.
Turning back and seeing the face that was gradually becoming unfamiliar, she felt a momentary lack of adjustment.
“So, you’re both in now. Do you need my help with anything else?”
Xiaoyu spoke, hoping Wen Yu would say no. That way, she could go look for the “older sister” from before and ask her about the inherent divine ability.
Her hopeful look, expecting to be dismissed, was too bright for Wen Yu to ignore.
Just as he opened his mouth, a gust of wind, carrying sand, instantly swept across the entire area.
A roar echoed through the air, and the ground trembled. Something was breaking out from beneath the earth.
The ground cracked, and an enormous creature slowly emerged. First, the long, thick horns, the huge head, the scarlet eyes, and then the entire body was revealed.
It was like a small hill, instantly occupying half the space.
Xiaoyu and the other two were close, especially Xiaoyu. The moment she saw this demon beast, she instinctively retreated backward.
The trauma of nearly losing her life was still there, making her entire body cold, yet she didn’t feel the intense fear she had before.
Duanmu Ying, on the other hand, immediately felt killing intent surge within her.
“The demon beast that attacked the town that night is of the same clan as this one!”
Only Wen Yu looked at this demon beast with unfamiliarity.
It was him—in his frenzied state—who killed the demon beast of the same clan, but he had no memory of it.
The appearance of this demon beast, the same clan as the one that attacked the town, meant that the town was being targeted by more than one demon force.
Less than three hundred years had passed since that great battle, and the Demon Race was once again harboring thoughts of invading the Human Realm.
“We need to find the person first.”
Xiaoyu was drawn by Wen Yu’s voice. Looking at him, she found that the top of his head was bare; the demon ears were gone.
“Taoist Priest, your ears are gone. Did the spell fail?”
Wen Yu only said that he had hidden the demon ears himself.
Xiaoyu nodded blankly. Why hide them? They were clearly very good-looking.
The demon beast walked past them, heading to the other side.
Xiaoyu overheard the demons discussing him, their tone full of resentment.
“Of all places, why did that Wen Yu have to oppose us? The nearest Human Race garrison has been protected. It’s harder than ascending to heaven to get in this time!”
“It’s strange, we and the adjacent minor demon territory agreed to share the humans in the garrison. Nothing went wrong for years, so why did Wen Yu suddenly appear?”
Xiaoyu pricked up her ears, turning her fox ears towards the demon beasts. She gently poked Wen Yu’s elbow and whispered, “Hey, they’re talking trash about you.”
“What did they say?” Wen Yu lowered his eyes, watching the fox standing there with her ears pricked up, listening attentively to the demon beasts. He was unusually patient, waiting for Xiaoyu to repeat their words to him.
She relayed the demon beasts’ bitterness towards him and the years of harm inflicted on the Human Race.
“No wonder the gate-guarding demon beast mistook you for a human slave. Turns out, they capture humans, enter into a Demon Contract, and turn them into slaves.”
“It’s utterly hateful! These demon beasts have never honored the agreements signed with the Human Race!” Duanmu Ying glared at the surrounding demon beasts. When she looked at Xiaoyu, her expression was still sour.
Xiaoyu, hearing this, was curious as to why Duanmu Ying hated demon beasts so much. Even Wen Yu wasn’t as extreme as she was.
“Say no more.” Wen Yu warned Duanmu Ying.
The surrounding demon beasts were already looking over frequently.
The two of them were speaking a non-demon language, which easily raised suspicion.
Xiaoyu glared back at the demons one by one, which made them disperse.
“Can you two search on your own?” She still wanted to see if she could seize an opportunity to slip away and find the “older sister.”
Wen Yu looked at her: “I don’t speak the demon language. I need your help.”
He said it so plainly that Xiaoyu had no chance to refuse.
“Alright, I’ll help.” Xiaoyu lowered her head, scuffed the sandy ground with her foot, feeling somewhat dejected.
All exposed organs of a demon directly convey the owner’s emotions. At this moment, the fox ears on top of Xiaoyu’s head drooped listlessly.
Wen Yu’s eyes flickered, and he spoke: “As compensation, you can have time to move about freely later.”
Xiaoyu immediately looked up: “Then I won’t say thank you.”
The now-re-energized fox ears dominated Wen Yu’s vision.
“Mm.”
Duanmu Ying stood nearby, suddenly feeling excluded from the dynamic between the two of them. She kicked the sand in frustration, wanting to urge them on.
“I need your help finding a place,” Wen Yu named the location: “Jinhuan Tower (Tower of Utmost Joy).”
Xiaoyu got the three specific characters and went to ask a demon beast for directions.
Duanmu Ying watched Xiaoyu communicating with the demon beast for a while and couldn’t help but ask: “She has returned to the Demon Territory, and these are her kin. Master, aren’t you afraid she will expose us? The demon at the gate was very respectful to her. She must be someone important.”
“I truly don’t understand, Master, why you trust a demon so much.”
Wen Yu only watched Xiaoyu, the girl questioning one demon beast after another.
“She can help me right now.” Wen Yu suppressed the strange feeling in his heart and merely said: “I do not wish to see you constantly question decisions I have made.”
Duanmu Ying immediately panicked, wanting to explain, but she saw Wen Yu fix his gaze on Xiaoyu, not sparing her a single look. She had no choice but to apologize through gritted teeth.
Xiaoyu returned, leading a demon beast. There was a distance between her and the beast. As she got closer, her smile was clearly visible on her face.
“I asked around, and he can take us there.”
The demon beast Xiaoyu pointed to was over a meter tall, with horns on its head and wrapped in rags, but its face was indistinguishable from a human’s.
“But he wants compensation: one piece of demon gold.”
This demon beast’s cultivation was not as high as the two at the gate, and he simply assumed Wen Yu and Duanmu Ying were also demons.
“Agreed.” Wen Yu accepted. “Have him lead the way.”
Xiaoyu nodded and walked ahead with the demon beast. They walked down the path they had previously passed, and then kept walking for a long time, so long that Xiaoyu’s soles started to ache.
They were unfamiliar with the area and were asking a demon beast whose background they didn’t know.
Xiaoyu began to suspect that the demon beast was taking a detour or didn’t know where Jinhuan Tower was at all.
She stopped the demon beast: “Do you really know the way?”
“Don’t worry, Elder. The Demon Territory has many buildings and complex roads. There is no direct path to Jinhuan Tower. The way I’m taking the Elders is already the shortest route.”
Xiaoyu couldn’t tell if he was lying. She subconsciously looked at Wen Yu. Seeing him nod, she chose to trust him.
“You better think carefully. If you don’t take us there, you won’t get your demon gold.”
The demon beast nodded repeatedly and started leading the way again.
For some reason, the further they walked inside, the stuffier and hotter Xiaoyu felt.
But seeing Wen Yu and Duanmu Ying looking relaxed, she just thought her body was too sensitive.
They walked for so long that even Duanmu Ying started to grow impatient.
Turning a corner, the path instantly widened. The sounds of a bustling crowd entered their ears, accompanied by the demon beast’s voice asking for the demon gold.
“Elder, we’ve arrived. I should receive my demon gold now.”
A magnificent building suddenly appeared. The massive, towering palace resembled a royal court. Its tall, wide doors were open, with demon beasts coming and going, and the interior brightly lit.
It gave off a sense of decadent luxury.
Xiaoyu retracted her gaze, stepped back to stand beside Wen Yu, and said: “The demon gold, give it to him.”
Wen Yu reached out, and to Xiaoyu’s expectant look, he opened his empty palm.
“I don’t have demon gold.”
Xiaoyu was shocked.
If you don’t have demon gold, why did you say you could pay?
As if sensing Xiaoyu’s thoughts, Wen Yu spoke again: “Wait a moment. Someone will deliver it.”
The moment he spoke, a figure squeezed out from the large doorway and rushed over to the group, reaching out to hand over a green, round leaf-shaped object.
The demon beast snatched it and ran off without a trace.
The person who delivered the demon gold pointed at the three of them one by one, then swayed and fixed his gaze on Wen Yu for a long time.
“Oh dear, Wen Yu, why have you changed your face?”
This person looked delicate and neat in his clothes, but the stench of alcohol surrounding him clashed strongly with his clean appearance.
“Long time no see, Lord Fushan.” Wen Yu subtly retreated a short distance.
At the mention of the three words “Lord Fushan,” Duanmu Ying showed shock.
Duanmu Ying looked at his bleary-eyed appearance in disbelief: “Are you the Lord Fushan who, over two hundred years ago, single-handedly annihilated a whole Demon Territory’s worth of demon beasts and then disappeared?”
The man blinked his drunken eyes and chuckled loudly.
“Little girl, you recognize me.”
