The First Senior Sister Is Weak and Helpless - Chapter 2
The little one did indeed stop crying. She looked at Mu Yao, began to giggle foolishly, and even started playing with her hair.
Mu Yao felt a slight tug from the little one and reached out to grab her hand. The feeling was truly miraculous; it was so tiny that a single hand was more than enough to hold it, and the little hand felt smaller than even half of her own.
Despite being so small, the little fist gripping her hair was clenched surprisingly tight. Mu Yao did not dare to use too much force, terrified that she might accidentally hurt the little one, which would be truly terrible.
She very carefully pried the little one’s fingers open, but as soon as she did, the little thing began to cry.
Who said she wouldn’t cry! At that moment, Mu Yao desperately wanted to call her unreliable master back, but by now her master had probably already reached another mountain peak and would not be back anytime soon.
At a loss, Mu Yao finally took off a hair ribbon and placed it in the little one’s hand.
Once the little one grasped the hair ribbon, she really did stop crying. In fact, she even began biting the ribbon while giggling to herself.
Only then did Mu Yao let out a slight sigh of relief.
However, after playing for a while, she probably got a bit hungry after all and started crying again.
Mu Yao had no idea how to handle this: “There, there, don’t cry. Master will be back soon, and there will be food shortly.”
Yet, a baby still in swaddling clothes, how could she possibly understand what she was saying? In the end, she burst into loud wailing.
No one in the entire sect had ever seen such a small little one; even the junior sisters brought back by Master in the past were not this small.
Her second junior sister was just one year younger than her and was currently studying talisman arts under the martial uncle. Her third junior sister was a human-demon half-breed who was eight years old when she arrived at the sect, but she was still well-behaved and sensible. A few days ago, the sect leader had taken her to the Fox Clan to help activate her fox bloodline.
Although the first two junior sisters were both young, they could at least take care of themselves and did not require much worry from her or Master. Master would simply let them roam free once brought back, and Mu Yao at most only supervised their cultivation according to Master’s instructions.
Now, her master had actually gone so far as to take an infant in swaddling clothes as a disciple. This was not even the most important thing; after all, if Master could personally teach her after bringing her back, Mu Yao felt there would not be any problem.
Yet her master happened to be completely unreliable. In the words of the sect leader uncle, the sect was probably haunted by ghosts around her, which was why every time she returned to the sect, she came and went in a hurried rush.
Only Mu Yao had been brought up single-handedly by her, but the so-called upbringing merely meant raising her to the age of twelve before going out on travels, and she would even bring back two junior sisters a year and dump them on her to raise.
Listening to the infant’s cries beside her ears, Mu Yao could not help but suspect that Master simply wanted disciples without wanting to teach them herself, which was why she brought herself back, just to find a head disciple to raise her disciples for her.
Master had not returned yet, and to just let the little one cry like this, Mu Yao’s heart could not bear it either. Mainly, the little one’s cries were growing louder and louder, and Mu Yao, acting as the eldest senior sister, was deathly afraid that this little thing would cry her heart out.
She reached out her hand, intending to tease and soothe her, or at least make her stop crying so sorrowfully.
However, since she could not see, she could not touch the little one’s small face after groping around for a long time. Her left hand hovered in the air for a while, and just as she decided to retract it, her finger was actively grabbed by the little one.
Mu Yao could not see, but she could feel it: her fingertips were bitten by the little one. The baby had not grown teeth yet, so even if she gnawed hard on her finger, it would not do any harm.
Yet this sensation still made Mu Yao’s entire body stiffen, and a tingling feeling seemed to spread through her whole body. It was truly bizarre.
Mu Yao bit her lower lip, deciding to withdraw her finger. However, as soon as she pulled her finger out, the little one started crying again.
With no other choice, Mu Yao gave her finger back to let her hold it in her mouth, sucking on it from time to time.
Mu Yao felt as though she had waited for nearly half an hour, but Master still had not returned, and she was terrified that the little one in her arms would start crying again shortly.
In the end, she decided she could only rely on herself.
Cradling the little one in her arms, she softly called out the name of her natal sword: “Han Shuang.”
Then, she swiftly stepped onto Han Shuang and headed straight in the direction of Dan Peak.
Although she could not see, having lived in the sect for more than a decade, she now roughly knew how to get to the various peaks.
Coupled with the fact that her cultivation had now reached the Soul Condensation Realm, allowing her to briefly project her divine sense in a small radius, she dared to fly on her sword directly like this.
Arriving at Dan Peak by sword, the disciples of Dan Peak all greeted her enthusiastically the moment they saw her.
“Little Mu Yao is here.”
“Eldest Senior Sister, you haven’t been here in so long! Yue Yue misses you!”
There were junior uncles with higher seniority than Mu Yao, as well as little radish-like kids with lower seniority than her.
Tianqing Sect did not have many people to begin with, and the disciples of Dan Peak were even fewer.
“Yo, I was wondering who came, turns out it’s Senior Sister Mu Yao. How did you manage to tear yourself away from your shabby courtyard? Is it too desolate, so you came to Dan Peak to soak in some human warmth?” A teasing voice drifted over, and Mu Yao did not even turn her head when she heard it.
The speaker was Nan You, the youngest closing-door disciple of the Dan Peak elder. Her talent in alchemy was unparalleled throughout the entire Dan Peak. Of course, if she did not always have bizarre ideas and randomly blow up alchemy furnaces every now and then, the Dan Peak elder, despite his advanced age, probably would not have been forced to refine some low-grade pills he disdained just to compensate the sect for its losses.
“Little Mu Yao, why are you still carrying a baby?” The martial uncle asked curiously upon seeing the little Wen Jiu in Mu Yao’s arms.
There was no expression left on Mu Yao’s face; Nan You had always thought this person was not only blind in the eyes but also paralyzed in the face, with plenty of flaws.
The young girl dressed in a blue dress walked up to Mu Yao and curiously sized up the little one in Mu Yao’s arms: “When did you secretly have a kid behind our backs?”
As soon as those words fell, Han Shuang appeared right in front of her, with a section of the unsheathed blade pointed at her throat, as if she would drop dead on the spot if she uttered another piece of nonsense.
Nan You reached out and pushed Han Shuang aside: “Just joking around, don’t make a fuss, Han Shuang.”
Mu Yao was not genuinely angry; she simply knew that this method worked best for dealing with Nan You.
Withdrawing Han Shuang, Mu Yao gave a slight nod to greet the martial uncle: “This is the little junior sister brought back by Master, named Wen Jiu.”
“Master said she was going out to find some food for the junior sister, but she went and has not returned. Mu Yao had no choice but to come and ask for help. Do any of you know what kind of food can be fed to the little junior sister?”
“Rare, is there actually something you don’t know?” Nan You said with a giggle, while reaching out to tease little Wen Jiu.
As a result, the moment she flicked the little one’s nose, the little thing began to cry.
Nan You instantly became awkward and flustered: “Hey, don’t cry! I didn’t do anything. There, there, don’t cry. Senior sister will go find you some food right now.”
Mu Yao seemed to have gained a little bit of experience; she reached out to scratch the little one’s chin, but unsurprisingly, she was grabbed by the finger again and started sucking on it as if drinking milk.
“She’s so small, it looks like there’s nothing suitable to feed her. Why don’t you try boiling rice soup for her using Zhu Yu grass and spiritual rice?” Nan You thought about it and offered an idea to Mu Yao.
“Will she be full just drinking rice soup?” Mu Yao asked doubtfully.
“Of course she will! Doesn’t this action of hers mean she thinks she’s drinking milk? Babies in the mortal realm only drink breast milk when they are born. It’s all water, she won’t starve to death,” Nan You said with a straight face.
“Do you need me to help you boil the soup?” Nan You asked happily.
Remembering all those weird concoctions Nan You had given her to drink before, Mu Yao resolutely refused.
“No need. Lend me some Zhu Yu grass and spiritual rice, and I’ll make it myself.”
“Two superior-grade spiritual stones.”
Mu Yao fell silent once more. Zhu Yu grass and spiritual rice were hardly worth two superior-grade spiritual stones.
“Eldest Senior Sister, I only want one, and I can even help you boil it.” Yue Yue nearby smiled innocently, revealing two little canine teeth.
Although neither of their asking prices was low, by comparison Yue Yue’s was relatively cost-effective.
Without thinking too much, Mu Yao took a superior-grade spiritual stone from her storage ring and gave it to her: “Thank you for your hard work, Yue Yue, but please make it quick. The little junior sister seems to have been hungry for a long time.”
She could tell that the little one’s voice had become hoarse from crying; she had no idea how long Master had left the little junior sister hungry.
For a moment, Mu Yao began to worry about her own future again, and naturally, she worried about the little junior sister’s future as well. After all, neither she nor Master had any experience raising children, so she hoped the little one could be strong and grow up well.
Nan You discontentedly tapped Yue Yue on the head: “Why are you stealing senior sister’s business?”
“Senior sister, you charge too exorbitantly.” After saying that, she made a funny face at Nan You and ran off.
Nan You curiously looked at the little one in Mu Yao’s arms again: “Can I hold her? I’ve never seen such a tiny little one before.”
She examined Wen Jiu as if inspecting some rare species.
Mu Yao thought about it and reached out to hand little Wen Jiu over. Having held her for so long, she genuinely felt a bit tired, not physically, but mentally, having to maintain constant tension for fear of accidentally hurting her.
As soon as Nan You took her over, before she could hold her for long, the little one burst into loud wailing, scaring Nan You so much that she almost dropped her.
Fortunately, Mu Yao sensed it and swiftly scooped the little one back: “What are you doing?”
Mu Yao’s tone was unusually tense. It was the first time Nan You had ever seen her look this nervous, shattering the expression on her face that usually remained unchanged through the ages.
“I am not doing it on purpose, I just got startled. Do not be so angry, at least from now on all the Zhu Yu grass and spiritual rice she needs will be provided by me.” Nan You said, knowing she was in the wrong and not arguing further.
“Okay.” Mu Yao agreed without the slightest bit of politeness.
The truth was that the spiritual stones she could produce were also limited. Mu Yao was a sword cultivator who disliked leaving Xiaoyao Peak, and her Master was away year-round, and even when she did return, she did not necessarily remember to leave some spiritual stones behind. Fortunately, Mu Yao and her two junior sisters were all quite talented and did not require massive amounts of spiritual stones to aid their cultivation.
Coupled with the previous relief aid from the uncles and aunts of various peaks, they managed to get by. But if she were asked to produce a large amount of spiritual stones to raise the little junior sister now, she truly did not have them.
Now that Nan You had proactively offered, how could Mu Yao possibly refuse?
