The Female Lead of the Abusive Novel Can Hear My Heart's Voice - Chapter 38
The air was filled with a damp, humid smell. In the lowest tier buildings of the coastal city, whenever it rained, water would seep through the walls and the plaster would peel off.
Xu Qin lay on a simple wooden bed. The room had no tiles, the floor was uneven, and spiderwebs hung on the walls.
A black umbrella looked completely out of place here it was too perfect, without a single mark of wear from life.
The person lying on the bed turned over, glancing at the rain umbrella leaning against the chipped red wooden door. She really wanted to break that umbrella.
It was so unfair. Why was Xia Mucai favored by so many people? This umbrella wasn’t specially prepared for her; it was given out of respect for Xia Mucai.
That kind of person took everything from her Xia Mucai had stolen her future happiness, leaving her with nothing but a black umbrella.
A wisp of black mist slipped in through the door crack, slithering on the ground like a snake, without a fixed shape. It gathered under Xu Qin’s bed into a ball of black fog.
Xu Qin wiped away the unwilling tears on her face. Suddenly, an ethereal voice echoed in her ears, startling her.
The black mist bounced on the ground once, then jumped onto her bed.
“Who are you?” She hurriedly changed from lying down to sitting against the wall, nowhere to retreat, forcing herself to press even closer to the wall.
The black mist sensed her fear and did not come closer. Instead, it politely retreated a little and said, “I have a way to get you the life you want.”
“How can you help me?”
“Xia Mucai is a ‘lucky cat’ the reason she got everything was because of her good fortune. The person who treated you to dinner was originally yours; she stole your luck.”
At this revelation, everything made sense. How could someone like Xia Mucai, a bumpkin, gain others’ favor?
“I knew it… I knew she couldn’t have gained Sister’s favor honestly.” Xu Qin clenched her fist tightly on the wall, a black mist infiltrating her mind. “So she stole my luck!”
The black mist laughed sinisterly, “How do you want me to help?”
Lost in the injustice of Xia Mucai stealing her luck, Xu Qin felt her body move against her will as the black mist quickly approached.
Her body stood up, picked up her phone, and took a photo of the black umbrella, then deliberately sent it to Xia Mucai.
Soon, a question mark came back.
She knew what she was doing intentionally provoking Xia Mucai. It felt so good. Xia Mucai would definitely be furious!
[The umbrella Sister gave me. Hopefully, one day Caicai can see Sister and me kiss. Don’t secretly cry and leave then, or I’ll feel guilty.]
Xia Mucai’s phone buzzed again. She looked at the message and immediately sat up from the large hotel bed.
“What the hell did she send?”
She opened the photo again, zooming in. Hmm… it really seemed to be Xia Chi’s umbrella.
“Damn, Xia Chi actually gave the umbrella to her?”
Somehow, she felt mad.
But not mad enough to roll around on the bed or go complain to Xia Chi.
She walked back to the hotel in the rain, shivering like she’d just stepped out of a freezer.
And then she saw Xia Chi had given the umbrella to the person she hated most.
If it weren’t for her reason telling her she couldn’t stop Xia Chi from giving the umbrella to whoever she wanted, she would have run to Xia Chi crying, saying she’d rather watch her get soaked than let the umbrella go, claiming she was cruel.
She couldn’t show weakness. Not now.
She calmed herself down, simply sending two “hehe” texts and a smiling emoji.
No response from Xu Qin for a long time.
She never lost when arguing!
A heavy rain began to fall, cooling the previously scorching weather. The streets were wet, and the wind cut across her face sharply, stinging painfully.
Braving the wind, Xia Mucai buried her head and went to hand out flyers. Her hair was messy from the wind. At least she didn’t have to worry about heatstroke today.
After working with Brown Bear for two more days, she would be able to pay off the hotel debt.
Then she could move out and rent a nicer place to live.
Soon, she saw Brown Bear waiting at Sister Li’s clothing store and waved. She ran over and hugged him.
Soft and warm, it was like a pillow.
She was so sudden that Brown Bear was a bit taken aback but did his best to hug her back.
She loved rubbing her face on him like a child. “Let me suck on you.”
“You two, hugging this early in the morning, be careful or I’ll get jealous,” Sister Li came out with a bag full of flyers that was their day’s mission.
Xia Mucai let go of Brown Bear and took the flyers, listening to Sister Li say, “There’s a party tonight, the boss requested it.”
“Is it for dinner? Or drinking?” After getting drunk last time, Xia Mucai didn’t want to drink again.
“Dinner. You can drink or not.”
Xia Mucai thought for a moment maybe she could finally see Brown Bear’s real face.
She gave him a sly look, and Brown Bear shivered.
She thought Brown Bear would come to the party and take off his mascot costume, but he didn’t show. Instead, she saw Xia Chi’s figure.
The party was at a Hunan restaurant, a bit far away. Xia Mucai took a taxi and hadn’t gotten off yet when she saw Xia Chi nearby.
What was she doing here? What a coincidence.
Xia Mucai didn’t get off and quietly observed. Xia Chi looked at her phone, then around, as if waiting for someone.
She didn’t dare get out. She wouldn’t get off until Xia Chi left. If caught, she’d be doomed.
Suddenly, Xu Qin got out of a car behind her. Could Xu Qin have invited Xia Chi here?
Had they already exchanged contact information?
Xia Chi, why are you so dumb? People just want your money, that’s why they cling to you.
Seeing Xu Qin hug Xia Chi’s arm and lean her head on her, Xia Mucai’s fingers clenched tightly on her pants in disgust. She was very unhappy.
She wanted to tear the two apart, why so close? And she thought to herself, Xu Qin doesn’t truly love you, she’s not right for you!
But her inner anxiety kept her frozen.
The two went into the Hunan restaurant, and she followed behind them.
That girl again. Xia Chi’s hand was suddenly grabbed. She glanced sideways and pulled her hand away.
Xu Qin sweetly called her “Sister,” but Xia Chi only saw her as Xia Mucai’s friend, a younger sister figure.
Xu Qin said, “Sister, I’m Xu Qin. I never told you my name before.”
Xia Chi nodded, acknowledging it. Her attitude made it clear she didn’t want to talk or get close to Xu Qin.
Her body language showed obvious rejection. Xu Qin tried to hold her arm, but Xia Chi dodged carefully, not wanting to hurt her pride.
You could see the helplessness in her; she was stuck with a persistent pest.
Xu Qin’s innocent look usually got guys to fall for her, become her loyal followers.
But the same trick had no effect on Xia Chi. Xu Qin didn’t blame herself but blamed Xia Chi for not being a guy.
She encouraged herself inside: “Money is hard to earn, shit is hard to swallow.”
“Sister, are you waiting for me? Let’s go in,” Xu Qin clung onto Xia Chi’s arm persistently.
For some reason, Xia Chi sensed something was off about her.
Xia Chi thought: They can’t be that close.
She wondered whether to wait for Xia Mucai silently or tell her directly that Xu Qin was the Brown Bear.
But Xu Qin came, so she quietly waited for Xia Mucai.
Because Xia Mucai’s friend wasn’t very good.
Xia Mucai quietly followed, watching them so close, worried Xia Chi might get bullied.
She knew what kind of person Xu Qin was like a rat lurking in dark sewers.
Just seeing her made Xia Mucai disgusted. Xu Qin had deliberately sent Xia Chi’s umbrella to annoy her yesterday.
At least by following them, Xia Mucai could protect Xia Chi.
She wanted Xia Chi to see what kind of person Xu Qin really was: greedy for vanity, stepping on others to get ahead.
And there were more rich people here, dressed in luxury. Xu Qin’s eyes gleamed with desire.
She stared so hard her eyes almost bled.
Xia Mucai never saw Xu Qin leave Xia Chi. This wasn’t like her.
Xu Qin wouldn’t cling to a tree like this.
Maybe she thought Xia Chi was easy to manipulate, so she went after the soft target first.
She thought so. Xia Chi clearly rejected Xu Qin’s advances, but Xu Qin pushed forward, relying on Xia Chi’s gentleness, and held her.
“Ahhh!” Xia Mucai nearly lost it, angry that Xia Chi wasn’t more assertive. “Why so soft? Don’t you know it makes you easy to be bullied?”
She really wanted to tell Xia Chi bluntly that Xu Qin was a bad person.
A long corridor led to the farthest end. Unknowingly, they had left the main group far behind.
When Xia Mucai realized, no one was left to cover her back. Xu Qin had deliberately taken her there to expose her stalking and make Xia Chi dislike her more.
Her heart pounded loudly, as if holding a microphone to amplify. The quiet corridor echoed only with her heartbeat.
She felt so foolish, falling for Xu Qin’s trap so easily.
A pair of sinister eyes looked back, meeting hers, full of provocation.
The next second, she saw Xu Qin pin Xia Chi against the wall and hug her neck. Xia Chi was forcibly kissed by the wicked woman…
And Xia Mucai ran away in panic.
Xu Qin was pushed aside, laughing triumphantly until she nearly lost balance and had to hold the wall.
Xia Chi almost got kissed by her, but it didn’t matter just seeing Xia Mucai unhappy made her happy.
Even under a pair of murderous eyes, she didn’t care. She just hated seeing Xia Mucai better than her. As long as she ruined Xia Mucai, she’d be happy.
“Why did you do this? Aren’t you Xia Mucai’s friend?” Xia Chi didn’t understand what Xu Qin gained from doing this.
Xu Qin stubbornly held back tears. “She’s a lucky cat. She stole my luck. It’s not fair. She has nothing but has what I don’t.”
“Ridiculous. Who told you she’s a lucky cat?” Xia Chi still had some rationality. Only she knew Xia Mucai wasn’t human she was a cat.
Xu Qin was dazed for a moment and suddenly couldn’t remember who told her Xia Mucai was a lucky cat.
Seeing Xia Chi’s killing gaze, she came to her senses. How could she get herself stuck on such a tree?
If she wanted to be mad at Xia Mucai, she should find someone richer than Xia Chi. She didn’t like girls, much less girls who didn’t like her.
She could only blame it on impulse and being blinded by anger.
“Sorry, I’ll explain everything clearly to Xia Mucai.” She thought a bit more, then added, “When do you have time? I want to return that umbrella.”
Xia Chi looked coldly at the suddenly changed girl and said flatly, “No need.”
