The Female Lead of the Abusive Novel Can Hear My Heart's Voice - Chapter 37
After a meal, feeling full and satisfied, Xu Qin used the excuse of going to the restroom to sneak a look at the person who had treated them to dinner.
Not wanting to attract Xia Mucai’s attention, she pretended to have a stomachache. She grabbed a napkin from the table, looked pained, and pointed toward the door. “I’m going to the restroom.”
Xia Mucai didn’t suspect anything and casually replied.
The private room door closed behind her. She didn’t slump on the table like a dead weight. Inside, it was so quiet that only breathing could be heard. She couldn’t understand why Xia Chi invited them to dinner. Did he really treat her like a mouse for amusement?
If that was the case, it was too much.
After a long time, with no sign of Xu Qin returning, one might have thought she had fallen into the restroom. Suddenly, there was a rhythmic knocking on the door polite knocking.
She thought it was a waiter and said, “Please come in,” but no one entered.
A bad feeling crept up. Could the person outside be Xia Chi?
The footsteps retreating from the door confirmed her suspicion. That style of unpredictability could only be Xia Chi herself.
Why didn’t she come in? Did she leave without killing her because she felt reluctant?
She felt somewhat relieved. Luckily, she hadn’t done anything too vicious to make Xia Chi hate her; otherwise, Xia Chi would have killed her without hesitation.
“Whoa” The door to the private room opened.
Xia Mucai, sitting in her chair, was startled, thinking Xia Chi had suddenly changed her mind and come in to kill her.
Seeing Xu Qin carefully and reluctantly enter with a flushed smile on her face, Xia Mucai patted her chest and let out a sigh of relief.
“Why did you take so long to come back?”
Xu Qin smiled faintly, her cheeks slightly red. She glanced at Xia Mucai, suppressing her smile, afraid Xia Mucai would pry anything from her.
“Xia Mucai, you’re going to lose. I just saw what the person who treated us looks like.”
Xia Mucai sneered disdainfully, “Who wants to compete with you? Just seeing them once doesn’t mean they like you. Why are you so smug?”
She especially disliked Xu Qin’s attitude, especially since this involved Xia Chi.
She didn’t want Xia Chi to be treated like an object to be fought over; what mattered was whether Xia Chi liked someone.
“Hmph.” Xu Qin flipped her hair, looking at Xia Mucai with a sideways glance. “I think you’re just jealous.”
Someone like Xia Mucai, who had never seen the world, how could that person be liked?
Black long hair, black leather jacket really handsome, and riding a motorcycle was even cooler. Compared to a guy, she felt safer.
Seeing Xu Qin’s expression, Xia Mucai was a bit annoyed.
This person was clearly using Xia Chi as a substitute and an ATM; how could she truly love Xia Chi?
Xu Qin said, “You don’t know how cool she is. She really suits black, dresses so well, definitely a model.”
Xia Chi looked good in black because Xia Mucai said so. She had seen Xia Chi’s pure side dressed all in white something only she had witnessed.
Her tone was cold and indifferent, subtly revealing a trace of inexplicable anger. “You don’t understand her at all.”
“You understand?” Xu Qin sneered mockingly, “Come on, you haven’t even met her.”
Xia Mucai: “…”
If this kind of person harmed Xia Chi, Xia Chi would be doomed. Her heart should be broken.
She crossed her arms and bowed her head, saying, “I have met her. Not only met her, but I already took her first kiss.”
The room fell silent for a few seconds before a sharp female laugh burst out.
Xu Qin pointed at her, laughing until she was out of breath. “You… hahaha, you say you took her first kiss? I’d believe she took your first kiss, but I don’t believe you took hers.”
Xia Mucai clicked her tongue coldly. “Believe it or not.”
Xu Qin’s cheeks hurt from laughing so hard, and she couldn’t help but mock, “Do you lie without a script? Someone like you is so unsophisticated; it’d be strange if Xia Chi liked you.”
“I don’t believe she’d like you.”
Outside, it started to rain, with thunder roaring, as if to wash away the heat of recent days.
The two women inside the private room froze at the sound of thunder. Neither had brought an umbrella. At that moment, a yellow rain warning popped up on their phones, announcing heavy rain would last all day.
Xia Mucai’s amber eyes glanced coldly at Xu Qin. She had no need to prove anything to her.
Xu Qin, having been to bars and foreign snack shops, looked down on her like dirt.
Such a person couldn’t be a friend. She only sought superiority over others and liked to oppress friends.
Suddenly, Xia Mucai said, “It’s raining. I have to stay with someone like you again.”
Xu Qin immediately got angry, rolled her eyes, and put her hands on her hips, looking arrogant. “Who else but me would take you out to see the world? Be grateful.”
She pulled open the chair opposite Xia Mucai and sat down. “If that person gave me an umbrella, I’d love them.”
Xia Mucai snorted disdainfully. She had tolerated Xu Qin all morning but didn’t want to anymore.
“Where are you going?” Xu Qin asked in surprise.
Xia Mucai stood up and walked toward the door. “I don’t want to stay with you anymore. I’m going back.”
“You’re crazy, it’s raining so hard outside.”
“I’d rather get soaked than stay with you.”
“Fine, I want to see what you look like soaking wet. Don’t be too ridiculous, Xia Mucai.”
Xia Mucai finally exploded. She turned around and pointed at Xu Qin. “Can you speak with some respect?”
“Have I not respected you enough?” Xu Qin sat with one leg crossed, unconcerned. “Then how do you want me to talk to you? Princess? Miss?”
She sneered, “Get real. I bet you’ve never even taken the subway. You’re such a bumpkin; what respect do you deserve?”
“Smack”
A heavy slap landed on Xu Qin’s face. She turned her head, holding her cheek in pain, eyes full of disbelief.
How could someone so lowly like Xia Mucai slap her? She suddenly raised her head and glared fiercely.
Xu Qin gritted her teeth and said each word, “You hit me!”
Xia Mucai didn’t back down and glared back. She was always tolerant of women, but today Xu Qin made her so angry she lost control.
“I’m not a bumpkin. Your confidence comes from looking down on people like me? That’s pathetic.”
Her swallowing sped up, her heart pounding fiercely. She had never said such words to a woman before.
Xu Qin shouted at her, “We’re done!”
She didn’t care. They had never truly been friends. “Fine, we’re done.”
Outside, the rain poured heavily, threatening to flood the roads. Water covered more than ankle-deep, floating disgusting trash bags…
Xia Mucai looked at it, hesitant to step out.
Going back now would be like slapping her own face. She had said she would get soaked and still go back, but now couldn’t step out because of the water.
She could already imagine Xu Qin’s mocking face. Actually, if she closed her eyes and endured it, she’d step in.
She patted her shoulder as rain splashed under the eaves. In moments, her pant legs were wet.
Suddenly, a familiar voice came from behind, “Not going back with an umbrella? Want me to take you?”
It was Xia Chi. Her voice was gentle but with a chill beneath.
Before Xia Mucai could turn, a black umbrella was raised over her head.
What was this… was she going to be taken to some secluded place and killed?
Her terrified heart pounded hard, almost jumping out of her throat.
She didn’t want to die yet; just a few more days. Next time, she wouldn’t run.
So this time, she would run away again.
Closing her eyes, Xia Mucai ran out, ignoring the muddy water and floating trash on the sidewalk.
The person behind called her name, but she didn’t stop or listen.
Under the eaves stood the person, looking disappointed.
Xia Chi watched Xia Mucai run away, reaching out to grab her hand but pulling back because Xia Mucai didn’t like it that way.
Muttering to herself, “You still won’t forgive me?”
Her chest ached as if blocked by a piece of gum stuck in her throat.
Standing in the rain under the umbrella was like an abandoned puppy, watching the figure run away without blinking.
She didn’t expect Xia Mucai to forgive her today, only wanted to ask if the meal was okay, just to get a bit closer.
Suddenly, her phone rang, bringing her back to reality. She glanced at the caller ID her biological mother in Jiangcheng.
Her lowered eyelashes passed over dark shadows beneath her eyes. She stared at the phone screen for a long time without answering. She didn’t need to guess; her mother must have been smashing cups in anger at the villa.
This wasn’t the first time her mother called to urge her. Every day there were more than ten calls; sometimes she answered, sometimes she ignored.
The call ended but soon came back again, determined to keep calling until she was annoyed.
In the end, she answered. On the other end was her mother’s angry voice, “How long will you take to come back? You said just to meet once and come back, but how many times have you met now?”
Usually, she wouldn’t say a word, but this time she glanced at Xia Mucai, who was walking away. Xia Mucai had bought clothes for her, meaning their relationship was improving. Only an apology was left, and she could bring her back soon.
Xia Chi said, “I’ll be back in a few days.”
Her mother was momentarily stunned, then realized. Her tone softened, “That’s good. Come back early to marry Teng Jingsi, and Caicai will naturally come back too.”
Before her mother could say more, Xia Chi hung up.
She didn’t have to marry Teng Jingsi; she could still bring Xia Mucai back to the Xia family.
She knew that hanging up would make her mother furious.
But she didn’t care anymore.
“Big sister, are you waiting for me?”
Xia Chi was startled by the sudden voice. A small girl squeezed under her black umbrella.
She looked down at the face a friend of Xia Mucai’s.
The rain was heavy; the girl was so small. She had just eaten with Xia Mucai.
She would treat Xu Qin well for Xia Mucai’s sake.
“Are you going back?” Xia Chi asked.
Xu Qin nodded eagerly. “Yeah.”
Xia Chi handed her the black umbrella. “Take this umbrella; the rain is heavy outside.”
“Thanks.” Xu Qin took the umbrella sweetly. “You’re so nice, sister.”
Xia Chi’s smile was distant. She dodged Xu Qin’s hug.
“You and Caicai should be good friends.”
Xu Qin’s smile faded, full of confusion. “You know Xia Mucai?”
“Mm.”
Xu Qin’s eyes went dark. It seemed what Xia Mucai said was true.
Why would such a beautiful person like Xia Chi like a bumpkin like Xia Mucai?
Xia Chi kept the umbrella, waving goodbye sweetly as the girl left. She waved her hand, watching the girl disappear.
