The Female Lead is Quite Unusual - Episode 38
Bai Yin’s anxious demeanor was utterly heartrending.
Lin Wan had always been studying time and space. Early on, she had come to understand that in the vast, desolate universe, countless living beings existed by the billions. To meet amidst the boundless sea of humanity was itself an extraordinary stroke of fate.
Lin Wan cherished every encounter.
Moreover, her mission was to protect Bai Yin in the first place.
“Yin Yin, I never lie.”
Lin Wan looked at Bai Yin earnestly, soothing her fragile and anxious emotions.
Truthfully, at the very beginning, she had only intended to complete her task properly. She never expected to develop such a deep bond with Bai Yin in this world.
“You are the most important person to me in this world.”
│
“When I said I would protect you, I wasn’t just saying it to placate you.”
“But what if I do something wrong in the future?”
Bai Yin gazed at Lin Wan, biting her lower lip tightly, her eyes shimmering as if still somewhat uneasy. “What if I do something you can’t accept? Would you still forgive me?”
Indeed, people in poor health tend to be especially fragile and sensitive.
Bai Yin was so delicate. What kind of wrongdoing could she possibly commit?
Lin Wan suspected Bai Yin’s question stemmed from something Li Ruyue had said to her.
She could almost picture how Li Ruyue had once manipulated Bai Yin. Relentlessly nitpicking over every little mistake, controlling her like a machine, which was why Bai Yin was now so terrified of making errors.
“To err is human.”
At this moment, Lin Wan only wanted to ease Bai Yin’s unease and help her live more freely. Unable to resist, she took Bai Yin’s hand and gave it a reassuring pat. “We’re the closest of friends. If you make a mistake especially one that affects others, I’ll help you make amends.”
“But if the mistake is directed at me, I can’t promise I’ll forgive you right away.” Lin Wan hesitated briefly before continuing. “However, as long as you don’t endanger my life and you’re sincere in your apology. If you coax me a little, I think I’d still forgive you in the end.”
Lin Wan pondered but couldn’t imagine anything Bai Yin could do to make her angry. Bai Yin had never provoked her temper before. On the contrary, Lin Wan herself carried a latent danger. If the original host’s plot to harm Bai Yin were ever exposed, she would likely lose any chance to stay by Bai Yin’s side.
With this guilt weighing on her, Lin Wan felt that no matter what happened, she simply couldn’t bring herself to be angry at Bai Yin.
Her words now were also a precaution. Just in case the truth came to light one day, she might still have a sliver of opportunity to explain herself to Bai Yin.
Thinking this, Lin Wan added, half-jokingly, half-seriously, “Who told you to be so beautiful? Just looking at your face makes it impossible for me to stay mad at you.”
Bai Yin’s lips curved into a smile.
She lay back against the pillow, tilting her head to look at Lin Wan, her eyes brimming with unmistakable delight.
“Wanwan, you always know just what to say to make me happy.”
“I’ll stay this beautiful forever. Even when I’m old, I’ll be the prettiest little old lady.”
The pampered young lady lifted her chin proudly again, clearly in high spirits. “Wanwan, I’ll remember what you said today. No matter how much you regret it later, it won’t change a thing.”
“Alright, alright…”
Seeing Bai Yin happy, Lin Wan also relaxed.
After comforting her a little more, she noticed it was almost noon and excused herself, saying she wanted to help Sister Zhang bring over the food. Only then did Bai Yin stop clinging to her for conversation, lowering her head to check her phone instead.
As she turned to leave the room, Lin Wan subtly let out a sigh of relief.
She had always thought Bai Yin was beautiful and felt a tender protectiveness toward her, as if guarding a fragile porcelain doll.
But for some reason, perhaps due to physical pain, Bai Yin’s eyes that day were glistening like those of an innocent deer in the woods, pure yet carrying a faint, elusive allure that stirred something deep within.
Though reluctant to admit it, Bai Yin in that moment truly resembled an enchanting spirit.
Lin Wan took several deep breaths in the hallway before the heat in her cheeks finally subsided.
She pulled out her phone and noticed a message from the photography student sent half an hour earlier. The gist was that he had been busy lately and wouldn’t be able to continue teaching her. He also recommended a photography institute run by one of their professors suggesting she sign up for in-person classes there.
Lin Wan didn’t dwell on it. After all, their acquaintance had been fleeting, and it was natural he’d prioritize his own commitments.
Still, since he had helped her a lot, she politely replied with a “Thank you.”
The response came almost instantly:
“No problem. Just focus on getting along with your family from now on, and don’t let small disagreements escalate.”
Lin Wan found the message baffling and sent back a “?” but received no further reply.
Curious, she looked up the institute he had recommended. The tuition fees were shockingly high. Her eyes widened. She hadn’t realized he had such a misguided impression of her financial situation. The idea of enrolling there was immediately dismissed.
Yet his suggestion sparked another thought: if high-end places were beyond her means, she could find a more affordable option nearby.
A quick search on a shopping app led her to a small studio run by a group of recent photography graduates. The fees were reasonable, and Lin Wan decided to attend classes during her lunch breaks.
The studio was five kilometers away, and taxis were hard to come by in her villa district. After some consideration, she resolved to buy an electric scooter for easier commuting.
But parking and charging it would require Bai Yin’s permission since the villa was hers. When Lin Wan brought lunch to Bai Yin’s room, she tentatively brought up the idea.
She felt uneasy, worried Bai Yin might refuse. A scooter parked at the villa’s entrance would undoubtedly clash with its refined aesthetic, and the fastidious young lady had always been particular about appearances. Such an odd pairing seemed unlikely to gain approval.
To her surprise, Bai Yin didn’t immediately object. Instead, she narrowed her eyes and asked, “What about that guy? Wasn’t he always eager to teach you photography? Why consider an institute now?”
“He said he’s been busy lately and probably won’t have time to mentor me,” Lin Wan sighed, frowning slightly. “He did recommend an institute. A prestigious one, but the tuition is ten times what this place charges. I have no idea why he thought I could afford something so expensive. ”
“Who knows,” Bai Yin murmured.
A sudden smile appeared on Bai Yin’s face, her mood seemingly lifting all at once. She glanced at Lin Wan, who was frowning, and raised an eyebrow teasingly, “Could it be that Wanwan is reluctant to let him go?”
“Of course not, and we haven’t known each other for long. It’s just that the whole thing feels a bit odd.” Lin Wan shook her head. “Something about it doesn’t sit right with me.”
“Actually…”
Watching Lin Wan lost in thought, Bai Yin’s eyes flickered, the curve of her lips deepening as her voice grew even softer. “Wanwan, have you ever considered that maybe that guy was a plant hired by the photography studio?”
Lin Wan’s eyes widened as Bai Yin continued in a hushed tone, “Wanwan, this is just speculation, but I know some shops hire people to attract customers, offering high commissions for successful referrals.”
“I’m not saying that’s definitely the case with him, but what if.”
Bai Yin lowered her head and fell silent, but Lin Wan’s thoughts began to wander. Upon reflection, it was indeed a possibility. The way the guy had suddenly recommended that studio had felt too abrupt.
Lin Wan pursed her lips, about to carefully review their interactions over the past two days for any signs of deception, when Bai Yin seemingly in high spirits grabbed her sleeve with sparkling eyes.
“Wanwan, where do you plan to park your e-bike? And what color are you thinking of getting?”
Bai Yin’s gaze was clear and earnest as she asked. “Besides, now that you’ve found a studio you like, chances are you won’t cross paths with that guy again. There’s no need to dwell on his intentions.”
Bai Yin made a valid point.
As if worried Lin Wan might feel down, Bai Yin immediately agreed to her buying the e-bike and even suggested a parking spot. Right beneath her balcony, where it would be sheltered from wind and sun.
However, Bai Yin insisted Lin Wan get a larger model, saying she wanted Lin Wan to take her for rides in the future.
Lin Wan doubted the delicate young lady would ever actually ride on her e-bike, but since Bai Yin had asked and it was only a little over a hundred more, she agreed without hesitation.
During her lunch break, Lin Wan went out and bought the e-bike, riding it straight back to the villa. On the way, she stopped by the studio she’d chosen to pay the tuition and enroll. True to form, the staff were incredibly welcoming, even gifting her a stack of photography books for free.
After enrolling, Lin Wan put the guy out of her mind. As Bai Yin had said, their paths were unlikely to cross again, so there was no point dwelling on it.
As Lin Wan parked the e-bike outside the villa and looked up, she spotted Bai Yin on the second-floor balcony, waving at her with a smile.
Lin Wan couldn’t help but smile back, knowing Bai Yin had likely been waiting there just for her. “The wind’s strong on the balcony, you should go rest. ” she called out, though inwardly, she was deeply moved.
Despite being frail and having just recovered from illness, Bai Yin had still mustered the strength to wait for her.
How could there be someone as pure and endearing as Bai Yin in this world?
Lin Wan stayed with Bai Yin until they finished dinner together.
As expected, the moment Sister Zhang left, Bai Yin tugged at her sleeve and whispered, “Will you come keep me company tonight?”
Bai Yin seemed to be growing increasingly clingy.
Lin Wan glanced at her. The unmistakable look of dependency in Bai Yin’s eyes gave Lin Wan a fleeting illusion as if she could do anything to Bai Yin.
That beautiful face wearing such an expression made Lin Wan avert her gaze after just one look.
For Lin Wan, this was a welcome development, indicating that Bai Yin was gradually beginning to reveal her true nature.
Naturally, Lin Wan agreed without hesitation and settled on a time to visit Bai Yin later that night.
It was still early, so Lin Wan returned to her room to freshen up and edit the photos she had taken that day.
Just as she finished editing the video and stepped out of her room, her phone rang.
It was a long-awaited call from Wang Jiang.
Lin Wan hesitated for a moment before answering.
Wang Jiang’s voice on the other end sounded urgent.
“Bai Ru has run into some trouble. From now on, her mother will be the one contacting us.”
“Time is running out. We need to act on the plan as soon as possible.”
