The Female Lead is Quite Unusual - Episode 37
Lin Wan had just finished using the restroom when she received a call from Bai Yin.
Bai Yin’s voice was naturally soft, but over the phone, it sounded even more ethereal, almost as if it were faint and breathless.
“Wanwan, I woke up this morning feeling a bit uncomfortable in my legs. Could you… come back early to keep me company?”
As if realizing she might have overstepped, Bai Yin added softly, “Actually, it’s not a big deal. I’ll be fine after resting for a bit. If it’s inconvenient for you…”
“How could it be inconvenient?”
Lin Wan immediately interrupted Bai Yin. “I’ve already finished most of the shoot and was planning to come back anyway.”
“I’ll be right there!”
Bai Yin wasn’t the type to show weakness easily. If she said she was uncomfortable, she truly meant it.
How could Lin Wan possibly focus on continuing the shoot?
She jogged back to where Butler Zhao and the young man were standing and apologetically explained that she needed to end the shoot early. The young man was very understanding and immediately told Lin Wan to go home and attend to her matters.
For some reason, Lin Wan felt that the young man’s attitude toward her had suddenly turned cold.
But she didn’t care about his attitude. After that, she urged Butler Zhao to drive home as quickly as possible.
“The young miss said her legs are uncomfortable. Did something go wrong?”
Lin Wan was deeply worried, her anxiety overwhelming. However, Butler Zhao, who was usually so concerned about Bai Yin, seemed unusually calm, driving at a leisurely pace and even insisting on delivering breakfast to his wife before heading back.
Seeing Butler Zhao’s composed demeanor, Lin Wan couldn’t help but doubt his loyalty. If Butler Zhao was as devoted as he appeared, why did he seem so unruffled?
“Don’t worry. I’ve already messaged Dr. Wang, and he said it’s nothing serious.”
As if sensing Lin Wan’s doubts, Butler Zhao glanced at her, cleared his throat, and explained, “We’re not doctors. Rushing back would only provide psychological comfort. Besides, Dr. Wang usually doesn’t allow outsiders to be present during his examinations. Even if we go back, we’d just be waiting around.”
Butler Zhao’s reasoning was sound.
Lin Wan took a deep breath, feeling immensely ashamed of her earlier suspicions toward Butler Zhao. Indeed, he had more experience in these matters.
Even though she knew Butler Zhao was right, Lin Wan couldn’t suppress her worry. After all, this was the first time Bai Yin had ever complained of pain to her. She was terrified that something might happen to Bai Yin.
Her heart burning with anxiety, Lin Wan just wanted to see Bai Yin as soon as possible and confirm her condition.
A little after 8 o’clock, the car finally arrived at the villa.
Lin Wan rushed upstairs and happened to run into Dr. Wang, who was just leaving Bai Yin’s room.
When Lin Wan asked about Bai Yin’s condition, Dr. Wang avoided her gaze, taking off his already clean glasses and wiping them incessantly. “It’s really nothing serious. Since the nerves in the young miss’s legs haven’t deteriorated, occasional sharp pain is normal. I’ve already given her painkillers, and she’s feeling much better now.”
“She was just talking about you. You can go in and see her now.” Facing Lin Wan’s earnest gaze, Dr. Wang seemed somewhat nervous. He pressed down too hard while cleaning his glasses, nearly snapping the frame.
“Well, the young lady is currently a patient, so she shouldn’t be stressed and needs more company. If you have time these days, try to stay with her more often.”
“Thank you, Dr. Wang. I’ll do as you say.” Lin Wan expressed her gratitude. “It’s a good thing the young lady has you by her side.”
“Not at all, not at all. You’re the one working the hardest.” Dr. Wang gave a dry chuckle, glanced up at her, and suddenly wiped his glasses even faster.
Lin Wan stared at Dr. Wang’s very shiny glasses, still somewhat puzzled about what exactly he was wiping. But since she had already gotten the information she wanted, she thanked Dr. Wang and didn’t ask further. Turning around, she pushed open Bai Yin’s door.
Bai Yin was lying on the bed resting, frowning at something on her phone. When she saw Lin Wan enter, she immediately put her phone away and gave Lin Wan an apologetic smile. “Wanwan, sorry for interrupting your studies. I’m feeling much better now.”
“If you want to go out for a photoshoot, I can give you a day off and have Butler Zhao accompany you.”
Lin Wan naturally wouldn’t go out again.
Bai Yin’s complexion didn’t look much different from usual, but Lin Wan still felt a bit uneasy. After carefully observing her for a while, she finally relaxed. “Yin Yin, you don’t need to be so formal with me. I’m honored that you thought of me when you weren’t feeling well. I’m happy about it.”
“Of course, I want to be by your side at a time like this.”
Hearing Lin Wan say this, Bai Yin clearly felt a little shy. She softly said, “Thank you, Wanwan,” and lowered her eyes.
“Yin Yin,” Lin Wan’s heart ached with pity. She lowered her voice, observing Bai Yin’s expression, and after thinking about what Dr. Wang had said, she couldn’t help but ask, “How are your legs feeling now?”
“Yin Yin, actually, your legs look perfectly normal, and your nerves haven’t atrophied. I really think there’s a good chance for your recovery. Have you ever considered going abroad for treatment?”
Lately, Lin Wan had been using all her connections to reach out to specialists in this field, hoping to bring them back to the country to examine Bai Yin’s legs, but she hadn’t made much progress.
“Of course, I want to cure my legs,” Bai Yin looked up at Lin Wan, a bitter smile tugging at the corners of her lips. “But Wanwan, I’ve tried so many methods, and I still can’t walk like I used to.”
“Wanwan, I really can’t bear another disappointment right now.”
Bai Yin turned her head away, her lips pressed together slightly. The lines of her profile were thin and delicate, looking utterly pitiable.
She didn’t say anything more, but Lin Wan seemed to glimpse, through her words, the endless cycle of attempts and disappointments Bai Yin had endured in the past.
Likely, Bai Yin’s heart had grown fragile and sensitive after all those repeated efforts.
If they made a big fuss about going abroad only to face yet another disappointment, Bai Yin might truly be unable to bear it.
Lin Wan immediately dismissed the idea of sending Bai Yin abroad for treatment.
That left only one option: inviting doctors to come to the country to treat Bai Yin.
When the time came, Lin Wan would have to make several trips abroad, hoping to eventually persuade those doctors with her sincerity.
“Are you still feeling unwell now?”
With that thought in mind, Lin Wan decided to change the subject and asked softly, “Yin Yin, is there anything you’d like to eat right now? I’ll go make it for you.”
“It doesn’t hurt,” Bai Yin shook her head, reaching out from under the blanket to carefully grasp Lin Wan’s arm. She nestled against Lin Wan’s shoulder, offering a weak smile.
“Wanwan, just stay with me.”
“Seeing you makes the pain go away.”
Bai Yin’s gaze was as gentle as water, her beautiful eyes brimming with affection as she looked at Lin Wan, her expression full of dependence.
Lin Wan clearly sensed that perhaps pain had made Bai Yin more vulnerable. She had reverted to their previous closeness, even more intimate than before.
Under Bai Yin’s gaze, Lin Wan’s heart melted, wishing she could give her everything she had. Naturally, she agreed to whatever Bai Yin said.
“Rest for a while. I’m not too tired right now. If anything comes up, just call me.”
Lin Wan softened her voice, pulling a chair to the head of Bai Yin’s bed. She took out a newly purchased photography book and began reading.
Bai Yin let out a soft “Mm,” obediently curling back under the covers. Her delicate, palm-sized face peeked out from the blanket, her beautiful eyes fixed unwaveringly on Lin Wan.
At first, Lin Wan felt perfectly at ease.
But under Bai Yin’s intense stare, Lin Wan tried to endure it, yet couldn’t help but blush.
“Yin Yin, is there something on my face?”
Lin Wan spoke softly, subtly hinting at Bai Yin’s overly direct gaze.
“I can’t sleep,” Bai Yin pouted, glancing at Lin Wan again before cautiously asking, “Wanwan, can I look at the photography book with you?”
“Of course.”
Lin Wan had no reason to refuse perhaps this would be a chance to learn more about Bai Yin’s photography preferences.
Since Bai Yin was lying in bed and Lin Wan sitting beside her made it inconvenient, Lin Wan thought for a moment and, after getting Bai Yin’s consent, sat on the edge of the bed.
She propped a few pillows behind Bai Yin, helping her sit up, then opened the book and held it between them so Bai Yin could see more easily from behind.
Lin Wan had assumed Bai Yin would sit up, but as she straightened her posture, a pair of hands gently wrapped around her waist from behind.
Bai Yin hugged her from behind, resting her chin on Lin Wan’s shoulder, seemingly pleased as she whispered softly in her ear, “Wanwan, this is much more convenient. You won’t have to hold the book in the middle anymore.”
It took Lin Wan a long moment to stiffly murmur an “Mm” and open the book.
Her eyes seemed fixed on the pages, but nothing registered in her mind.
Even though she knew Bai Yin had suggested this out of consideration for her, from the moment Bai Yin pressed close, Lin Wan’s body had grown incredibly tense.
Especially when Bai Yin spoke near her ear, the vibrations from her chest and the warmth of her breath brushing against Lin Wan’s earlobe made Lin Wan acutely aware of Bai Yin’s presence. It took all her self-control not to push her away.
The feeling was utterly unsettling.
Lin Wan mechanically turned the pages, each second feeling like an eternity. How could she possibly remember her earlier intention to ask about Bai Yin’s photography preferences?
Bai Yin, on the other hand, seemed quite engaged, asking, “Wanwan, are you done reading?” while reaching over to turn the pages.
And every time Bai Yin leaned in to speak, her breath would sweep past Lin Wan’s ear, adding a noticeable flush to Lin Wan’s already crimson cheeks.
Lin Wan felt as if she had been stuffed into a steamer, almost suffocating from the heat.
In Lin Wan’s hopeful anticipation, Bai Yin finally finished reading the book.
Lin Wan breathed a sigh of relief, closed the book, and wanted to seize the moment to step outside for some fresh air and cool the heat on her face. But before she could even speak, Bai Yin moved closer from behind, wrapping her arms around Lin Wan from the front.
“Wanwan, thank you.”
Bai Yin’s cheeks were also slightly flushed.
She gazed at Lin Wan with a mix of shyness and unease, her dark eyes looking exceptionally bright: “I’ll do my best to treat you well.”
“I really love being by your side, but I’m afraid you might grow tired of me.”
“Wanwan,” Bai Yin’s eyes glistened with obvious moisture, looking as though she were extremely flustered, yet her gaze remained fixed on Lin Wan, her voice low and hoarse.
“Can you really stay by my side forever, just as you promised before?”
