The Ex-Wife-to-Be Is Acting Weird After Losing Her Memory - Chapter 29
Chapter 29: Variation Six
The island had a dedicated coastal road for tourists to bike and walk on. Their small electric scooter could also be driven in this area. They rented a scooter painted like a pink bunny, with Lu Jiayin taking the driver’s seat first.
These scooters were easy to operate, and their speed was specially limited. She spent a few minutes getting familiar with the controls, then drove Zhen Zhen toward the beach.
The sea breeze, carrying a faint floral fragrance, rushed into the semi-open carriage. Lu Jiayin held the steering wheel with one hand, enjoying the scenery along the way. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Zhen Zhen, still sitting upright with her hands folded on her lap, looking a little uncertain.
“Wife, what’s wrong?” she asked casually, curious.
Hearing her question, Zhen Zhen slowly turned her head. Lu Jiayin saw her ask somewhat blankly: “This car doesn’t seem to have seatbelts…”
Lu Jiayin laughed: “You are so cute! This is just a toy car, and the speed is so low…”
As she spoke, she pretended to step on the accelerator. The speed-limited scooter indeed only accelerated very slightly, maintaining a stable running speed.
However, just then, a minor incident still occurred.
Not far ahead of them was a children’s beach play area. Several small children were playing with a ball. One little boy in blue beach shorts suddenly threw a tantrum, grabbed the ball, and ran straight toward the road. He ran out quickly, his small, nimble figure sprinting across the sand and onto the scenic road. Lu Jiayin saw the child from a distance, and at the same time heard Zhen Zhen’s stern warning: “Stop the car quickly—”
She reacted instantly, stepping on the brake button. The scooter was already moving very slowly and stopped about seven or eight meters away from the little boy. Almost the moment the car stopped, Zhen Zhen got out.
Lu Jiayin watched her quickly go to the little boy and lead him to the safe zone on the right side of the scenic road. Soon, the child’s parents rushed over and immediately started scolding and educating their child.
The child’s mother turned to thank Zhen Zhen, but Zhen Zhen seemed to be frowning and said a few more words.
Her expression was unusually serious. Even after the mischievous child was led away by his parents, she remained in that focused posture, as if she hadn’t fully recovered, or was deep in thought.
Lu Jiayin found it strange and glided the scooter next to her: “What’s wrong with you?”
In her view, the incident wasn’t serious. There were few cars on the scenic road, and everyone was driving slowly. Even if the child had run out, it wouldn’t have caused irreversible consequences. But Zhen Zhen’s solemn attitude made her feel inexplicably nervous.
Zhen Zhen rarely had such an intense emotional reaction.
The moment she heard Lu Jiayin’s voice, Zhen Zhen’s expression softened. She returned to the scooter and gave her a gentle smile.
“It’s nothing. Sorry for worrying you.”
She folded her hands on her knees and let out a light breath.
But Lu Jiayin still acutely sensed that Zhen Zhen had genuinely been scared. She raised her hand and placed it on the back of Zhen Zhen’s folded hands, patiently saying: “It’s okay. Don’t be afraid…”
In the past, if Zhen Zhen didn’t say anything, she would have assumed Zhen Zhen didn’t want to talk about it and wouldn’t have pressed further, maintaining that sense of “propriety.” But after all this time together, she had long thrown that propriety out the window, focusing only on the person in front of her.
She held Zhen Zhen’s hand firmly and whispered: “Wife, seeing you like this makes me very worried. Please tell me what happened, okay?”
The soft breathing in her ear paused for a moment. Zhen Zhen seemed to hesitate for a long time before she said quietly: “I reacted a bit strongly just now.”
The hand in her palm was cold, its coolness touching her skin. Lu Jiayin heard Zhen Zhen continue: “I’ve never told you how my parents passed away…”
As an heir to a wealthy family, there was little reporting about Zhen Zhen’s background, and what little existed vaguely mentioned her being orphaned at a young age. This was the extent of the information Lu Jiayin had, both before and after her amnesia. She hadn’t even seen what Zhen Zhen’s parents looked like until she saw the photos in her office recently.
“When I was seven, my father was driving my mother and me back to Grandpa’s house. At a crossroad, we encountered a large truck. The driver had been driving tired for a long time and accidentally dozed off, running a red light and hitting our car… My parents died in that car accident.”
Zhen Zhen’s voice remained calm, but Lu Jiayin noticed her hand was constantly trembling, as if she was struggling to suppress her emotions: “The truck driver died on the spot. His family only had a sick wife and a child less than a month old, so they couldn’t afford much compensation. And for us, compensation really had no meaning.”
“I was raised by Grandpa and slowly accepted the principle of life’s impermanence. But I can’t drive myself. My hands shake whenever I hold a steering wheel. Of course, this isn’t a huge problem for me… and then, I always overreact to potential dangers. Did I scare you just now? I’m sorry…”
Before she could finish, she felt her body enveloped in warmth. Lu Jiayin had suddenly hugged her.
“Don’t apologize.” She had never known that Zhen Zhen’s parents had died this way, nor that Zhen Zhen was silently carrying so much fear. The thought of young Zhen Zhen having to endure that lonely and long period made her heart ache with an indescribable bitterness.
Lu Jiayin held Zhen Zhen’s shoulders tightly, unsure how to comfort her, only able to murmur close to her ear: “It’s all in the past. Everything will be fine from now on, wife. Don’t be sad. I’m here to stay with you.”
Her voice was soft, yet it possessed an unexpectedly reassuring strength. Zhen Zhen nodded gently: “Mm. I can actually face it now. I just thought talking about these things would make others unhappy, so I never mentioned it. Thank you.”
She had initially decided not to tell Lu Jiayin about these painful memories, but facing such a gentle Lu Jiayin and being wrapped in her warm scent, she unconsciously felt the urge to share it.
She wanted to occasionally seek a bit of courage, so she could know that she wasn’t alone.
Hearing this made Lu Jiayin’s nose feel even more sensitive. She affectionately rubbed her cheek against Zhen Zhen’s and whispered: “Silly. You can tell me anything. I will listen carefully.”
Only then did she belatedly realize why, upon learning about her car accident, Zhen Zhen rushed to the hospital with almost no hesitation, even though they were scheduled to sign divorce papers two days later. After that, no matter how unreasonable her demands were, Zhen Zhen accommodated them all.
Later, Zhen Zhen would check every day whether she had gone out and then arrange a driver to pick her up and drop her off. Lu Jiayin initially thought Zhen Zhen was just being polite, but now she understood that Zhen Zhen was afraid of losing her and was quietly protecting her in the most secure way possible.
“I heard from Fu Ruyi that I was driving myself the day of the car accident and hit the road barrier because it was too late and I couldn’t see clearly,” she murmured, leaning into Zhen Zhen’s arms. “That must have worried you a lot, right? I promise I’ll be very careful from now on. I won’t let something like that happen again.”
As if trying to comfort Zhen Zhen, she hugged her very tightly, as if to protect her securely. Neither of them spoke again, simply leaning against each other in the scooter in a quiet embrace.
After a long time, they heard a very cartoonish siren sound from behind, followed by a voice coming through an electric megaphone.
The voice, crackling with static, sounded unusually loud and powerful: “The pink bunny scooter in front! What are the passengers doing? Ah? Oh, oh, if you want to do weird things, go home first! You know this car is a convertible, right?”
Startled by this sudden warning, which felt like a public execution, Lu Jiayin sprang out of Zhen Zhen’s arms. Her face was flushed as she watched a similarly cartoon-styled patrol car drive past them. The security officer inside, with a gossipy smile, was yelling at them through the megaphone.
“We’re driving off right away!” Zhen Zhen was also startled by this unexpected “enforcement” and quickly responded awkwardly.
Seeing that they were indeed fine, the cartoon patrol car wobbled away. The security officer waved at them: “Be safe, and don’t do that kind of thing on the scenic road.”
“What kind of thing did we do!” Lu Jiayin was almost driven to tears of laughter as she started the scooter and muttered an explanation.
But then she found it funny again and couldn’t help but chuckle. Zhen Zhen did too. Both were amused by their own foolishness, but a sweet feeling welled up in their hearts.
“He just said, ‘if you want to do weird things, go home first’,” Zhen Zhen’s meaningful voice came to her ear. “Want to go home?”
Lu Jiayin stepped on the accelerator, driving the small scooter away: “You’re being a little naughty, wife.”
The next morning, after enjoying a lavish breakfast at the villa, Lu Jiayin and Zhen Zhen reluctantly bid farewell to the vacation home, which held so many memories, and started their journey back.
“If you like it here, we’ll come back next time,” Zhen Zhen suggested after reaching out to smooth Lu Jiayin’s hair, which had been ruffled by the sea breeze.
Lu Jiayin smiled and nodded, adding: “Just vacationing here isn’t enough. We have to go to many other places too.”
This was their first time traveling together. When they first married, it coincided with the start of Lu Jiayin’s new drama, so they hadn’t even had a honeymoon. But Lu Jiayin cleverly avoided mentioning it, instead coaxing: “I don’t remember where we went before anyway. Since you proposed again, let’s treat it as a fresh start.”
Let’s complete all those regrettable, unfinished experiences again with this new version of myself.
Zhen Zhen, of course, wouldn’t refuse any of her requests, smiling as she said: “Okay, I’ll take you wherever you want to go. After your drama wraps up, we’ll go on a holiday.”
She then seemed to recall something important: “Speaking of which, isn’t the filming start date approaching? We should also go back to the hospital for a check-up. I wonder how your recovery is progressing?”
Lu Jiayin’s expression froze. She nearly failed to maintain the smile on her face. Her mind raced, and she whispered: “Right, right! You reminded me—I almost forgot. I should go back to the hospital for a check-up.”
