Chapter 28: Variation Five
When the ring box opened, it revealed the flawless heart-shaped pink diamond ring inside, sparkling like a brilliant star.
Even as a celebrity accustomed to luxurious clothes and valuable jewelry, Lu Jiayin was stunned by the ring. She raised her eyes in surprise: “As a birthday gift, this is truly too…”
Just looking at the carat weight of the diamond, one knew the price must be astronomical, far exceeding the usual specifications for daily wear. Lu Jiayin hadn’t expected Zhen Zhen to give her such an expensive gift and was momentarily overwhelmed.
Zhen Zhen smiled and said to her: “It’s not just a birthday gift.”
Afraid she would refuse again, she took the diamond ring out and cupped it in her hand for Lu Jiayin to see: “This is the only pink diamond from this year’s Sotheby’s auction. It is called ‘Eternal Heart.'”
“This recent period has been the most time we’ve spent together since our marriage, and I feel like a lot of things are changing. I feel like I’m slowly starting to understand you better, and I’ve also realized that I haven’t done many things well in the past.”
“Two people being together is a process of continually creating memories and accumulating happiness. In these past few days, we’ve done many things together for the first time, and we’ve had many moments where we grew closer. I’m realizing more and more that you are truly important to me.”
She took Lu Jiayin’s hand and slipped the diamond ring onto her ring finger. The custom-sized band fit perfectly.
“Because of the amnesia, you might not remember my last proposal, or our past experiences. Since we now have a chance to start over, I want to take this moment as a new beginning and propose to you again.”
She gently cupped Lu Jiayin’s left hand like a precious treasure, knelt on one knee, and asked softly: “Miss Lu, are you still willing to marry me now?”
The moment the ring was slipped on, Lu Jiayin’s heart instantly skipped a beat. The significance of this gesture was too great. Meeting Zhen Zhen’s sincere gaze, the impact was like a tightly bound rope, lassoing both her heart and her ring finger.
Only then did she realize that tonight was not just a simple birthday celebration. It was Zhen Zhen gathering her courage to show her a sincere, clear heart. All the moments they had tested and touched each other during this time were, in fact, undeniable, gentle moments of mutual attraction.
Zhen Zhen’s gaze was enveloped by the moonlight, seeming to pour out a pool of gentle, clear radiance. The love radiating from her eyes made Lu Jiayin’s heart burn, her thoughts scatter. The nervousness made her heart beat frantically, thumping against her chest.
Her cheeks flushed crimson. As if having made up her mind, she held the warm hand in return: “Miss Zhen, I do.”
The wind stirred the rustling shadows of the trees, soaking the night in even greater tenderness. The pink diamond on her ring finger sparkled. Lu Jiayin’s fair hand slid upwards, slowly reaching for the other person.
The hand, with a touch of playful teasing, trailed down from the side of Zhen Zhen’s face, lightly tracing the contours of her features, and finally rested on her lips. Lu Jiayin’s almond eyes gradually softened into a hazy color, like amber or a sugared moon, as she looked at Zhen Zhen with a smile: “You’ve finished the proposal. Are you going to kiss the bride next?”
Zhen Zhen lowered her eyelashes to look at her. Inches away, she could see Lu Jiayin’s soft lips. The lipstick was the color of rose petals, moist and fragrant, inviting her closeness.
She couldn’t resist such temptation and obediently leaned down to kiss her bride. With every kiss, the heat in her veins intensified. The intoxicating feeling of the alcohol gathered, creating a mesmerizing softness and heat.
“Wife,” Lu Jiayin wrapped her arms tightly around Zhen Zhen’s waist, kissing her from the side of her cheek all the way to her lips. Her breath was like damp mist: “You’re blushing again.”
Lu Jiayin’s teasing always stirred up deep desire in her heart. Zhen Zhen slightly compressed her lips until Lu Jiayin was about to kiss her again, when she suddenly turned her head, dodging the hovering kiss.
Before Lu Jiayin could react, she suddenly felt the grip around her waist tighten, followed by her feet leaving the ground. A sense of weightlessness, like the world was spinning, instantly struck her: Zhen Zhen had picked her up.
The lights in the bedroom had been dimmed. The sound of the distant waves rose and fell in succession. The shimmering water painted the white walls with sparkling light and shadow. Through the soft light, Lu Jiayin felt as if she were lying atop a wave, swelling and drifting, causing her heart to rise and fall in sync.
A hand gently stroked her face, raising a wave of warmth.
Lu Jiayin gasped sharply. She sank into the bed, which carried an oceanic fragrance, her breath stolen by the subtle touches. Her bright eyelashes became moist, half-closed, as she called out softly: “Wife…”
Slightly breathless, she tried to embrace the person in front of her, but her arm was caught halfway. A light kiss immediately landed on her fingertips, causing her heart to momentarily cease beating with the heat.
In her line of sight was Zhen Zhen’s beautiful face. It looked slightly different from before. Her eyes were saturated with light. She leaned down, her nose intimately touching Lu Jiayin’s palm, and asked with a smile: “Jiejie, I just remembered you still have a gift you haven’t unwrapped. Do you want to unwrap it now?”
Lu Jiayin was so flustered by the teasing that she felt immersed in a flowing stream. She gasped softly and asked: “What gift?”
A warm sensation came from her wrist. That gentle force held her hand, slowly, until it stopped at a certain spot.
Her finger touched something cool, with fine patterns pressing against her fingertip—it was the button of Zhen Zhen’s shirt.
“I am Jiejie‘s gift,” Zhen Zhen smiled softly. “Jiejie, if you want it, why don’t you unwrap it yourself?”
Sunlight filtered through the white sheer curtains, bringing warm light into the room. Lu Jiayin’s thick, long eyelashes fluttered, and she slowly awoke from her deep sleep.
The cost of their improved relationship was a very sore waist. She turned over somewhat hazily, looking at the beautiful diamond ring on her ring finger. The dazzling brilliance of the pink diamond shimmered in her eyes, and the blushing, passionate scenes from last night resurfaced in her mind.
The bedroom door opened again. Zhen Zhen walked in while drying her hair. Compared to Lu Jiayin, who was too lazy to even move a finger, Zhen Zhen looked full of energy.
“The butler said there’s a farmers market nearby. The seafood and fruit are quite fresh. Do you want to go there to eat?” She leaned close to Lu Jiayin, stroking her hair.
Lu Jiayin rubbed against her palm like a kitten, lazily humming “Mmm.”
After washing up, she found a new outfit hanging on the rack—a creamy white knitted dress, perfect for a vacation, clearly prepared for her by Zhen Zhen in advance.
She changed her clothes and casually tied her long hair into a bun, giving her a more casual and light-spirited, girlish look compared to when she was formally dressed.
When she walked into the living room and saw Zhen Zhen wearing a creamy white knitted top and jeans, Lu Jiayin suddenly realized that their two outfits carried a distinct couple’s look vibe.
Her eyes curved in a smile, and she linked her arm through Zhen Zhen’s: “I thought CEO Zhen wasn’t fond of these small romantic gestures.”
She usually seemed so serious and reserved. It turned out she had this inner, girly side.
Zhen Zhen cleared her throat: “I just happened to buy matching styles.”
Lu Jiayin didn’t press her further. The two continued to the market on the electric cart. Zhen Zhen sent the driver away, leaving them to wander around by themselves.
The open-air market was mostly frequented by island residents or artistic young people who had set up shop there, offering everything from handmade coffee to creative Western cuisine. Lu Jiayin wore sunglasses to conceal her face, pretending to be a tourist, enthusiastically weaving through the stalls.
Her work kept her busy, and she rarely had a chance to go out. Everything seemed novel to her. Zhen Zhen indulged her wanderings. Before long, Lu Jiayin had bought many snacks and handcrafted items, and she was also holding a coconut in her other hand. After one sip, Lu Jiayin forgot about the coconut and turned her attention to the grilled fish balls nearby.
“These fish balls are homemade by the old lady! They’re so chewy and bouncy!” She happily ran back, holding the small bowl of balls up to Zhen Zhen as if presenting a treasure.
She initially wanted Zhen Zhen to try one. She brought it to her mouth but then quickly pulled it back. They had been walking for a while, and Zhen Zhen hadn’t touched any of the street food. She probably wasn’t used to eating these things.
Just as she hesitated, the person in front of her suddenly chuckled. Then, Lu Jiayin saw Zhen Zhen lean in and ask with a hint of grievance: “Jiejie, why won’t you let me eat it again?”
Lu Jiayin was startled and subconsciously offered the bowl. But Zhen Zhen opened her mouth, signaling Lu Jiayin to feed her.
Zhen Zhen looked at her with bright eyes, which somehow reminded Lu Jiayin of a small dog. The ‘little puppy’ even blinked at her: “My hands are full.”
If anyone else saw this, they would be shocked. Lu Jiayin’s heart raced, but she obediently speared a fish ball and offered it to Zhen Zhen’s mouth.
“Mmm, it is delicious,” Zhen Zhen seriously took the ball and smiled at her.
She’s so easily amused. This realization gave Lu Jiayin a subtle feeling. The two continued walking forward. This time, Lu Jiayin learned her lesson. As they browsed, she fed Zhen Zhen every delicious thing she found.
By the time they walked the length of the snack street, they were both almost full.
Lu Jiayin let out a satisfied sigh. This trip was even more enjoyable than she had anticipated, and her spirits were noticeably high. Her eyes lit up when she saw a rental shop by the roadside.
“They have small electric scooters for rent here. We can drive to the beach to play.” She turned to ask for Zhen Zhen’s opinion.
The small electric scooters were all two-seaters, made into cute, cartoon animal shapes. However, Zhen Zhen looked at the rental requirements and paused at the rule: “Driver must possess a motor vehicle driver’s license.”
“I don’t know how to drive,” she admitted honestly after a moment’s thought.
Lu Jiayin didn’t mind at all: “I have a license. I’ll drive you.”
