- Chapter 19 - Believe Me, This Is You
“Shen Muyun, this contract is extremely important. It concerns the relevant development in the north of the city. We are about to start the meeting immediately. Is this your answer?”
Shen Muyun knew he had made a mistake and had fallen into a trap. He felt inexplicable confusion. Was the world really harboring such immense hostility toward him? He also blamed himself. He had not verified the document and had trusted someone else too easily. Regardless, this was his own fault.
“That…”
Before Shen Muyun could finish speaking, Secretary Chen, who was standing to the side, held up some other documents. “President Shen, these are the documents you just requested. The financial statements for the second quarter have been sent to your email. Also, this is the contract with the Zhou family. They indicated that they still hope the Shen family can give them another chance.”
Shen Liuyun did not even look up. He casually tossed the documents onto the floor. “Secretary Chen, you have been by my side for a long time. Take the Zhou family contract back. I know you have personal connections with them, but let us forget about this kind of thing. Perhaps there will be an opportunity in the future, but it is absolutely impossible right now.”
Secretary Chen lowered his head to pick up the contract from the floor. He glanced at Shen Muyun and rolled his eyes. “President Shen, I will convey your words word for word. Do not worry.”
Shen Muyun felt a surge of anger while being stared at by Secretary Chen. How could he let this slide? Where was his persona?
He stepped forward directly and grabbed Secretary Chen by the collar. “Chen, tell me, did you do this on purpose?”
Secretary Chen patted Shen Muyun’s hand and shook his head innocently. “Young President Shen, what could I have possibly done on purpose?”
“You, Secretary Chen, tell me: you told me this file had no problems, which is why I felt assured enough to print it out.”
“Young President Shen, you are wronging me. You did not check it carefully. How can you blame me for that?”
With Shen Liuyun present, Shen Muyun could not vent his anger. He had to release Secretary Chen’s clothing, though he patted his shoulder as he did so. “Secretary Chen, I have noted this behavior of yours. Do not forget that we will see each other every day. Good luck to you.”
Shen Muyun punched the wall next to them, and one could immediately see a dent forming in the surface.
Secretary Chen smiled triumphantly. As if to show off his power, he whispered in Shen Muyun’s ear, “Young President Shen, you are still too green when it comes to company matters. Do you understand what competition is?”
Shen Muyun’s emotions were on the verge of spiraling out of control when Shen Liuyun’s voice came from nearby.
“Enough, Muyun. Go look at those few pages again. Are there not backups? Just correct them properly. Take another look at the pages I mentioned. Delaying the meeting slightly is not impossible. Also, Secretary Chen, go get busy. There is nothing for you to do here.”
Shen Liuyun rubbed his temples, feeling irritated as he looked at the document that had just been brought over. Looking at the time, he realized it was truly almost too late.
A crisp, sharp sound echoed through the hallway. Slap!
“Chen, that is a small gift for you. I hope you accept it with a smile.”
Red marks instantly appeared on Secretary Chen’s face. He raised his hand to retaliate, but Shen Muyun grabbed his arm, causing a “crack” sound.
“Who do you think you are, Secretary Chen? You should know that when I see someone I do not like, I go straight to physical action. As for gentlemen, if they can use their hands, they should not use their mouths, as it is a waste of breath.”
“Shen Muyun, you are truly crazy. Do you have evidence? When have I ever framed you? Right now…”
Secretary Chen pointed at the security camera above. “That is clearly recording. There is evidence of you hitting someone. Shen Muyun, you cannot do anything right. What exactly are you supposed to be at this company?”
Shen Muyun looked up and could even see his own back reflected in the camera lens.
Creak.
“Muyun, why are you and Secretary Chen still here? Why have you not gone to check the contract issues yet?”
Secretary Chen smiled at Shen Liuyun and immediately freed himself from Shen Muyun’s grip.
Shen Muyun was filled with rage. He hated nothing more than people setting traps to frame him. This was perfect; on his first day at the company, he had created such a huge mess.
Shen Muyun walked past Secretary Chen, deliberately bumping into his shoulder. Secretary Chen glanced at Shen Muyun, showing no intention of moving aside.
“A good dog does not block the road. It seems Secretary Chen is a natural-born dog.”
“You!”
Shen Muyun did not wait for Secretary Chen to say anything else. He walked straight into the office. How were the two of them supposed to work together now? He felt troubled, but that was only for a split second. What was important now was this contract. As for backups, he clearly remembered that the contract had been placed in a hidden partition. No, wait, why were the files missing?
He quickly pulled out his USB drive and plugged it into the computer. The files on the USB drive had also been largely deleted. Shen Muyun felt a sudden pang of panic. Perfect. They had deliberately set a trap, and he had not reacted in time. No wonder he had seen Zhou Shiqing earlier; this entire thing was likely Zhou Shiqing using Secretary Chen’s hand to execute his plan.
Shen Muyun frowned. Seeing Secretary Chen walk in, he grabbed his clothes. “Secretary Chen, I think you should know the importance of this document. Is it really right to help an outsider?”
Secretary Chen smiled and patted his hand. “Young President Shen, I do not understand what you are talking about. The documents are important, but the problems originated from you. How can you blame me?”
Shen Muyun looked at the useless contract in his hand. It was definitely too late to draft a new one, and scanning would take time, not to mention formatting corrections. Was there really any shortcut he could take?
Secretary Chen busied himself for a while and then took some documents out of the office. Shen Muyun felt anxious, but suddenly, he had a flash of inspiration.
“System! System, come out here!”
The system appeared in front of Shen Muyun, looking reluctant. It blinked its eyes, and there were potato chip crumbs on its mouth. Wasn’t it just a program? How could it eat food?
“What did you just go do?”
“Respected Host, I was just trying out human food. It tasted wonderful, and I want to eat it again next time. However, are you not at work? How do you have time to come to me? Have you encountered a thorny problem? As a system, I can help you solve your worries. I am your capable assistant.”
Shen Muyun pointed at the computer screen, looking at the empty folder. “Do you have any way to recover deleted files?”
The system’s mouth continued to make crunching sounds. Electronic potato chips? Interesting.
“That, well, Host, this is a computer issue, and I do not know how to do that. Although my operating mechanism is similar to a computer, such data recovery tasks should be left to engineers. I am just a poor, incompetent system.”
Shen Muyun slammed his hand on the table in a fit of rage, causing the files on top to scatter onto the floor.
The system had never seen Shen Muyun lose his temper before and jumped up and down in fear. “He is killing the system! He is killing the system! Does he have any humanity? Is there any justice?”
Shen Muyun looked at his wristwatch. Time was ticking away every second. If the system had no way, what about scanning? But there were still errors that needed to be corrected before printing. What to do? What on earth should he do?
“Kill you? I do not have the leisure to do that. Besides, you are a system, not a human. How could I kill you? Should I unplug your power supply? I do not even know where your power supply is. Do not babble anymore. Close your little mouth!”
The system reluctantly made a zipping motion over its mouth, and the screen displayed a sealed mouth.
Shen Muyun sat at the desk, looking at the contract in his hand. He picked up a pen and began to carefully circle the errors. There was a way. There had to be a way. After all, the time had not run out yet.
He glanced toward the doorway and saw the silhouette of Lu Huainan. Could he have already arrived?
Shen Muyun tiptoed out of the office like a gossip spectator. No, wait. Had he not said the surveillance was gone? And why was he sneaking around outside the office? Shen Muyun immediately straightened his back and looked around outside the office.
“Are you looking for me?”
Shen Muyun was startled. It really was Lu Huainan.
“That, what a coincidence. I did not expect to run into you on my first day at the company.”
“Brother Yun, why are you sneaking around? I came to the Shen family company to sign a contract. You should know it is about that land in the north of the city. Also, there was an additional part to the horse track contract from a few days ago. I do not know if Liuyun has some business to attend to, but he actually pushed the meeting back.”
Shen Muyun’s mouth twitched. He immediately threw the contract in his hand onto the table. “Perhaps there really is something going on. I just saw Secretary Chen walk into the office.”
“So that is how it is. Brother Yun, how does it feel to work at the company on your first day?”
This Lu Huainan really knew how to hit a person’s soul with every word. “How else could it feel? My brother arranged a light job for me, and I was just preparing to print some documents. That is all.”
Lu Huainan glanced at the contract on the table. He could vaguely see the snake-shaped emblem on the cover. That was the Lu family’s crest. The fact that Shen Liuyun postponed the meeting definitely had to do with the contract. There was no doubt about that.
“Huainan, I heard you like black coffee. Our breakroom happens to have freshly ground coffee today, and the beans were chosen by my brother himself. Would you like to try some?”
Lu Huainan smiled at Shen Muyun. “Hmm, the flavor should be good since Liuyun chose it. By the way, Brother Yun, will you be coming to the meeting later?”
Shen Muyun shook his head, then quickly nodded. “Hmm, if I have time. I am still familiarizing myself with company affairs.”
“So that is how it is. Then I will go to the breakroom to take a look. You go ahead and get busy.”
Shen Muyun let out a long sigh of relief. Should he assume he had not revealed any flaws? Shen Muyun glanced at the upside-down contract. He already owed Lu Huainan a favor, and now the contract had turned into such a mess. It was truly incredible. No wonder the system called him the “Heavenly Chosen Son,” which meant he was given a disastrous start and would be everyone’s lackey for the whole game.
