- Chapter 18 - Shen Muyun, Your Contract Is
It was truly frustrating. He wondered if the System’s little games were actually reliable. Based on the current situation, they were definitely not.
The System, seeing that Shen Muyun had no objections, was overjoyed. It could not help but circle in the air, humming a little tune. It looked incredibly relaxed.
“System, tell me, when will you ever act normally? Did the developer create a half-finished product and just toss it into service like this?”
“I do not know about that. You were the one chosen to come here. As for me, well, there are some things better left unsaid. Either way, Respected Host, you will find out eventually.”
Shen Muyun frowned, fiddling with a figurine on his desk. He had been in this room before, but he had not realized the original owner was so fond of collectibles. There was even a glass display case specially for them. He decided he would have to take a closer look later to see if there were any rare, out-of-print treasures inside.
“System, I think it is getting late. I have to go to the company tomorrow to check things out. Early to bed and early to rise is a good habit, so, um, good night.”
The System spun happily. “Respected Host, I shall take my leave then. See you tomorrow!”
“You sass-mouth.”
Shen Muyun lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. If Lu Huainan and Shen Liuyun were in cahoots, he would truly be finished. The affection level clearly indicated that Shen Liuyun might be a villain, just one who had not awakened yet.
He pulled the covers over his head. “So annoying!”
In his hazy, half-asleep state, he felt as if someone had come into the room and then left.
“Tap, tap, tap. Tap, tap, tap.”
Shen Muyun groggily rubbed his eyes. He checked the time; it was only six o’clock. That did not seem right; that did not sound like the alarm he had set.
He looked ahead and was shocked. The System’s rounded rear was pointing right at him. Damn, does this System have something wrong with its head?
“What on earth are you doing this early in the morning? You scared me to death!”
“I am learning a morning exercise from the human world called Pilates. It seems it can help with weight loss.”
Shen Muyun could not help but burst into laughter. “System, look at yourself. You are practically a sphere. How are you supposed to lose weight? Never mind, I am already up. Is today’s itinerary arranged?”
“Host, the data shows that you must leave home by seven o’clock to ensure you are not late. Your private car has been prepared according to your preferences.”
Shen Muyun did not think much of that statement at first. However, until he stood in front of the vehicle, he did not realize the specific problem. It was a gaudy, exaggerated pink, covered in graffiti. He was thirty-two years old; was this not supposed to be a young teenager’s favorite?
“System, you want me to drive this to work? Have you considered my age? Have you considered that this looks like a ride for a delinquent youth?”
“Well, there was no other choice. This, um, this is the only car currently at home. Besides, there is a contract at the company, so you should just make do. Anyway, um, not many people will see it.”
Shen Muyun set his jaw and got into the car. There was no helping it; he was stuck with this unreliable contraption.
When he arrived at the company, Shen Muyun saw people rushing to and fro. No one noticed him. That was great; as long as no one paid attention to him, he was fine.
Relying on his memory, he headed toward Shen Liuyun’s office. It was his first day, and he had not been assigned any tasks yet. He was wondering how he could maintain his slacker image.
Suddenly, he collided with someone at the corner.
“I am sorry!”
They said it in unison. Hmm? The voice sounds familiar.
Shen Muyun looked up and was surprised to find it was Zhou Shiqing. A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as he patted him on the shoulder. “Why have you not given up yet?”
“Ah, Young Master Shen. An unexpected visitor. What are you doing at the company? If the contract is void, then it is void. It does not matter to me.”
Shen Muyun smiled. A two-faced snake; there was no telling how much malice was hidden in that belly of his.
“I am not interested in your business. And personally, I think it is for the best that it is void.”
“Shen Muyun!”
“Hmm? I am here. What is it now? Speak up.”
“Tch, I do not believe you can remain this smooth-sailing forever.”
“Well, I appreciate the well wishes. I hope my days ahead are not entirely smooth, but at least they will be better than yours.”
Shen Muyun shoved past him and walked toward Shen Liuyun’s office. Tch, you cannot give people like that any respect.
“Knock, knock, knock.”
“Please, come in.”
Shen Muyun pushed the door open to see a thick stack of documents on Shen Liuyun’s desk.
Shen Liuyun only looked up for a moment before continuing to write. “Muyun, you are here. There is a meeting today to sign a contract with the Lu Group. This here is the draft. Take a look and remember to have it printed before ten o’clock.”
“The company does not have any openings right now. How about this? You will work by my side as my temporary secretary. There is a lot to do these next few days, and I am afraid Chen will not be able to handle it alone.”
Tch, this is just a glorified errand boy. They call it a temporary secretary; oh, right, they added temporary too. Once things slow down, I will probably be kicked out.
“Um, Brother, where should I report?”
Shen Muyun tapped the pen in his hand against the desk. “Right here, in the CEO’s office. This is a probationary period. Our Shen family has its own set of recruitment processes. I cannot break the rules just because you are my brother. In private, you call me Brother; in public, you call me CEO Shen.”
Shen Muyun nodded, took the USB drive from Shen Liuyun, and waved at him.
“Prepare carefully. This contract should be fine. If you do not understand anything, ask me directly. Your office is right next to mine, and Chen is there too. If you are stuck on something and I am not around, ask him.”
“Brother, I understand. Do not worry.”
Shen Muyun backed out of the office. Shen Liuyun watched his retreating figure with a profound look before lowering his head to sign documents again.
Shen Muyun went to the office next door. It was empty; the man named Chen was probably busy.
Shen Muyun looked at the USB drive in his hand, found his workstation, and opened the folder to carefully check the files.
“System, is there a problem with this contract?”
The System chose a flashy way to appear, even changing the display color to a classic black-and-white mode.
“Respected Host, this is a task assigned by your brother. How would I know? It is so thick; even if you read it page by page, it would take several hours.”
“Are you stating the obvious? This contract must be printed by ten o’clock, and it is already past nine. Where would I find that much time? System, do you have any good ideas?”
The System landed on the computer screen. The tiny display pressed against it, emitting waves of blue light before it fluttered its wings and hovered in the air.
“The main content of this contract is a proposal for the Lu Group and the Shen Group to jointly develop the land in the north of the city. It focuses on building the CBD core and peripheral infrastructure like hospitals and parks. The system scan reveals no major problems. Do you still want to check it personally?”
When it came to signing a contract with the Lu family, Shen Muyun did not know if it was a natural sense of trust or something else, but he felt at ease. It was not like the Zhou family, which looked like trouble from the start.
“Hmm, can you scan the details?”
“Respected Host, currently, this is equivalent to a memorandum of cooperation. It does not involve specific cases, and there will likely be subsequent negotiations. Therefore, there are not many details, and based on careful calculation, it is absolutely fine.”
“So you are the new hire!”
Shen Muyun heard a noise behind him. There were only two desks in the office; it must be Chen.
“Secretary Chen, hello. I am the CEO’s brother. It is my first day, so I have a lot to learn from you.”
He did not know if this Secretary Chen was just naturally outgoing, but he draped an arm over Shen Muyun’s shoulder. “Oh, you are that second young master of the Shen family who made headlines a few days ago! Impressive, impressive! Great courage.”
Shen Muyun pursed his lips. “Um, yes, that is me. About this document.”
Secretary Chen glanced at the computer and pulled Shen Muyun toward the door. “You can trust CEO Shen one hundred percent. He spent two nights working on this plan; there will not be any mistakes. Do not worry.”
Shen Muyun was still a bit worried; this contract was very important, after all.
“Um.”
“Young Master Shen, do not worry. If anything goes wrong, I will take the blame with you. Come, come, the pantry got a new batch of black coffee today. They say it is the CEO’s favorite. I freshly ground it; do you want to try some?”
Shen Muyun wanted to refuse, but after thinking about it, he agreed.
When they arrived at the pantry, they found the coffee machine jammed and emitting a wisp of white smoke.
Secretary Chen immediately cut the power, looked at the half-ground coffee beans, and sighed helplessly. “Why did it have to break now? I was hoping to taste it with you. Looks like I have to get back to work.”
Shen Muyun smiled. “It is fine. There will be plenty of opportunities.”
Shen Muyun checked the time; it was nine-forty. It was about time. “Um, Secretary Chen, I have not printed the contract for the CEO yet. I will go first. See you back in the office later.”
This Secretary Chen; he has been by Shen Liuyun’s side for a long time, so he should not let anything go wrong. Besides, all the bad luck in the world cannot possibly fall on me.
Shen Muyun printed the contract and flipped through it to check for any missing or misaligned pages.
Shen Muyun counted the pages and checked the page numbers on the computer. It was correct. He went straight to Shen Liuyun’s office and placed the contract on the desk.
“Brother, this is the contract. I just printed it.”
Shen Liuyun was busy, but he glanced at it and picked it up. His expression turned solemn. “Muyun, did I not instruct you that this contract is very important and needs to be checked carefully? Did you not notice the data error here? Is this your first day of work, and you are already this careless?”
“Brother, this.”
Just then, Secretary Chen walked in. “CEO Shen, here are the documents you wanted. I have placed them here.”
It was obvious. Shen Muyun had been set up.
