- Chapter 22 - Calculation: How to Lure a Puppy Into a Bowl
Su Yang had been a bit troubled lately.
Extremely troubled.
Ever since she won the semifinals, Senior Wen seemed to have suddenly become busy.
To what extent?
So busy that when Su Yang delivered breakfast in the morning, Wen Yusheng would only take it hurriedly, say a quick “Thanks, I’m in a rush,” and vanish into the crowd of the teaching building.
So busy that when she rushed to the classroom door at noon to wait for her, she was told, “Senior has an appointment with her mentor today and ate out.”
So busy that when she wanted to accompany her to the library in the evening, Wen Yusheng would say, “My thesis has reached a critical stage and requires absolute silence. Don’t come over; focus on your training.”
For three consecutive days, Su Yang hadn’t been able to have a proper conversation with Wen Yusheng.
All communication between them was limited to those few simple “Good morning” and “Good night” messages on WeChat.
Su Yang felt as if she had been banished to the “Cold Palace.”
That sensation of falling from the clouds left her listless in everything she did.
During training, she made frequent mistakes. Several times she nearly sprained her ankle and was scolded mercilessly by her coach.
At dinner, facing a table full of braised pork and sweet and sour pork ribs, she had no appetite at all.
Lying in bed at night, she tossed and turned, unable to sleep, her mind filled entirely with Wen Yusheng’s cold yet beautiful face.
What exactly is Senior busy with?
Is the thesis really that difficult?
Or… is she tired of me?
Once this thought emerged, it was like a poisonous thorn stabbing ruthlessly into Su Yang’s heart.
She remembered the words Chen Manni had said before.
“She’s just playing with you right now because she thinks it’s novel. Once she’s bored, she’ll throw you away like a piece of trash.”
Could it be… that she was right?
Was all of Senior’s kindness and intimacy just for fun, just for the novelty?
Now that the novelty has worn off, is she starting to distance herself?
Su Yang’s heart sank bit by bit.
She didn’t dare ask Wen Yusheng.
She was afraid that the answer she would receive would be the most cruel one.
She could only endure this torment alone in silence.
“I say, Yangyang, what exactly is wrong with you these past few days?” Zhao Jie finally couldn’t take it anymore. She snatched the chicken drumstick that Su Yang had poked full of holes. “You’re absent-minded, like you’ve lost your soul. If you keep this up, are you even going to play in the finals next week?”
“I’m fine,” Su Yang answered listlessly.
“You’re fine?” Zhao Jie rolled her eyes. “Your face might as well have ‘I’m heartbroken’ written across it in big letters. Tell me, did you have another falling out with your precious Senior?”
Su Yang remained silent.
Seeing her like this, Zhao Jie knew she had guessed correctly.
She sighed, patted Su Yang’s shoulder, and said earnestly, “Yangyang, it’s not that I’m picking on you, but that Senior Wen clearly isn’t an ordinary person. You and her might really not be a good match. A short pain is better than a long one… why don’t you just let it go?”
“No!”
Su Yang barked back almost instinctively.
The volume was so loud that it startled the people eating around them.
She herself was stunned.
She hadn’t expected her reaction to the words “let it go” to be so intense.
Give up?
She couldn’t do it.
Just thinking about never seeing Wen Yusheng again, never being able to eat with her, never being able to see her smile—Su Yang felt as if a piece of her heart had been hollowed out, aching so much she couldn’t breathe.
She realized that her feelings for Wen Yusheng had already far exceeded her imagination.
It wasn’t simple admiration, nor was it mere sisterly affection.
It was a deeper, more complex emotion that left her addicted and unable to extricate herself.
She liked Wen Yusheng.
Liked her very, very much.
So much that as long as she could stay by her side, even if only as an insignificant “guardian,” she was willing.
“I can’t give up.” Su Yang looked at Zhao Jie, her eyes filled with unprecedented determination. “I like her.”
This was the first time she had so clearly admitted this feeling to herself and to someone else.
Zhao Jie looked at her, opened her mouth, and ultimately said nothing.
She simply gave a heavy sigh and placed the mangled chicken drumstick back into Su Yang’s bowl.
“Eat,” she said. “Only when you’re full will you have the strength to chase her.”
What Su Yang didn’t know was that while she was grieving over her “heartbreak,” her beloved Senior Wen was sitting in a high-end cafe, having afternoon tea with a man.
That man was none other than Zhou Mingxuan.
Today, Zhou Mingxuan wore a perfectly tailored custom suit, his hair combed impeccably, with a confident and composed smile on his face.
“Yusheng, I really didn’t expect you to actually ask me out.” He looked at Wen Yusheng across from him, his eyes full of surprise and admiration. “I thought you had some misunderstanding about me.”
Wen Yusheng gently stirred the coffee in front of her without speaking.
The reason she had agreed to Zhou Mingxuan’s invitation today wasn’t because she had any favorable impression of him.
It was because she needed him.
More accurately, she needed the Harvard professor behind him.
Her graduation thesis had indeed hit a bottleneck. A financial model she proposed was constantly showing unexplainable deviations during data backtesting. Her mentor was also at a loss.
And the professor Zhou Mingxuan provided happened to be an authority in this field.
Wen Yusheng was not the type of person to give up an opportunity for the sake of so-called “lofty pride.”
Since Zhou Mingxuan had proactively brought the resources to her door, she had no reason not to use them.
“Mr. Zhou.” Wen Yusheng looked up at him. Her tone was polite but very distant. “I came today because I want to ask for a favor. I’d like you to introduce me to that professor for a video conference. Is that possible?”
She got straight to the point without any beating around the bush.
Zhou Mingxuan was taken aback for a moment, then he smiled.
“Of course.” He agreed readily. “It is my honor to be of service to you, Yusheng. However…”
His tone shifted as he leaned forward slightly, looking into Wen Yusheng’s eyes to probe: “Yusheng, your ‘roommate’ from last time… she didn’t come with you today?”
He was still brooding over Su Yang’s existence.
Hearing him mention Su Yang, a trace of imperceptible coldness flashed through Wen Yusheng’s eyes.
But her face remained calm.
She picked up her coffee, took a light sip, and then spoke unhurriedly.
“You mean Su Yang.” Her tone was casual, as if speaking of someone inconsequential. “She’s just a junior of mine, a bit clingy. That day I wasn’t feeling well and she came over to take care of me. She might have had some misunderstanding regarding you; don’t take it to heart.”
With just a few words, she defined her relationship with Su Yang as ordinary “Senior and Junior.”
She attributed all of Su Yang’s actions to being “clingy” and a “misunderstanding.”
Hearing this explanation, the heavy stone in Zhou Mingxuan’s heart finally hit the ground.
He knew it.
How could a proud woman like Wen Yusheng possibly take an interest in a penniless athlete?
So it was just an immature little junior.
“So that’s how it is.” The smile on Zhou Mingxuan’s face became even more brilliant. “I knew it. Someone as outstanding as you, Yusheng, how could you…”
He didn’t finish his sentence, but the meaning was obvious.
Wen Yusheng didn’t take the bait.
She simply gave a faint smile and pulled the topic back to the main track.
“About that professor…”
“No problem! Leave it to me!” Zhou Mingxuan beat his chest in guarantee. “I’ll contact him immediately and arrange a time for you.”
Wen Yusheng looked at his eager appearance, a hint of mockery flashing in her eyes.
Men were truly such shallow creatures.
As long as you gave them a bit of hope, they would be like sharks smelling blood, impatient to pounce.
She had very easily utilized Zhou Mingxuan’s “eagerness” to solve the difficulties in her thesis.
After a two-hour video conference with the Harvard professor, Wen Yusheng felt a sudden enlightenment; all her problems were solved.
She returned to the dormitory in a good mood.
As soon as she turned on her phone, she saw dozens of WeChat messages from Su Yang.
From eight in the morning until ten at night, there was almost one every hour.
Yang: Senior, are you done with your work today?
Yang: Senior, have you eaten? Do you want me to bring something over?
Yang: Senior, my training for today is over. How are things on your end?
Yang: Senior, are you still angry? Should I not have grabbed your phone that day? … The last one was sent ten minutes ago.
Yang: Senior, good night. Rest early, don’t overwork yourself.
Looking at these words filled with worry and caution, Wen Yusheng could imagine that Su Yang must have been restless and overthinking things these past few days.
The corner of her mouth curled into a successful smile.
Excellent.
The timing was just about right.
This little dog had been left out in the cold long enough.
If she continued any longer, what if she actually lost heart and ran away?
Although Wen Yusheng was confident that Su Yang couldn’t leave her.
But occasionally, one still needed to give a little sweetness.
After all, raising a pet required a balance of “kindness and authority.”
Wen Yusheng’s fingers tapped quickly on the screen.
She didn’t reply to any of Su Yang’s messages.
Instead, she clicked directly into Su Yang’s Moments.
Su Yang’s Moments were very simple. Aside from forwarding school notices, she shared videos about badminton.
The latest post was from this afternoon.
It was a selfie of her slumped on the floor of the training hall, exhausted.
In the photo, she was covered in sweat, her hair was a mess, but her eyes carried a stubborn refusal to lose.
The caption was: Finals, keep going!
Wen Yusheng looked at the photo, her gaze lingering for a few seconds on Su Yang’s T-shirt, which was clinging to her body due to the sweat.
Then, she clicked the comment box.
She didn’t type a single word.
She simply sent a basic, yet suggestive emoji.
A “kissing” face.
Having done all this, Wen Yusheng put down her phone and went to take a shower in a pleasant mood.
She knew that tonight, someone was definitely going to lose sleep again.
As for her, she could sleep peacefully.
She even felt in the mood to type a new line into her memo—the document titled “Observation and User Manual for Su Yang.”
Rule 4: Appropriate neglect helps increase a pet’s loyalty and dependency. But watch the degree; after a slap, remember to give a piece of candy.
Rule 5: This little dog’s body seems even more attractive than I imagined. Perhaps, at the right time, I can consider… an intimate contact.
