- Chapter 21 - Her Reward: The Head-Rub
Su Yang’s brain completely ceased to function the instant she heard Wen Yusheng’s words.
This bottle of water… I just drank from it.
She looked down at the ordinary bottle of mineral water in her hand. A few drops of cold condensation hung from the plastic, and through the transparent surface, she could see the water inside swaying slightly.
It was this very bottle.
The water the Senior had just drunk.
Did that mean if she drank it now, she would… she would touch the place the Senior had just touched?
Would it be… an indirect kiss?
This realization hit Su Yang’s entire body like a powerful electric current. Her hand trembled as she held the bottle; it felt as though the water had turned into a scorching hot potato—she couldn’t hold it, yet she couldn’t throw it away.
“What’s wrong?”
Watching Su Yang’s absent-minded, flushed, and foolish expression, the smile at the corners of Wen Yusheng’s mouth deepened.
She loved seeing Su Yang this flustered.
She was as pure as a blank sheet of paper; with just a little bit of maneuvering, Wen Yusheng could wantonly paint her own colors across that white surface.
“Afraid to drink?” Wen Yusheng intentionally arched an eyebrow, her tone carrying a hint of provocation. “Or is it… that you find me distasteful?”
“No! That’s not it!”
Like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, Su Yang immediately protested loudly.
Was she kidding?
How could she possibly find the Senior distasteful!
She couldn’t wait to worship the Senior like a deity from the heavens!
To prove her “innocence,” Su Yang gritted her teeth, closed her eyes, unscrewed the cap, tilted her head back, and gulped down several mouthfuls of water.
The icy mineral water slid down her burning throat, taking away a sliver of the heat but failing to calm her heart, which felt ready to leap out of her chest.
Her lips had touched the spot the Senior’s lips had touched.
This realization sent bursts of brilliant fireworks exploding in her mind. She could even imagine how Wen Yusheng’s soft lips, perhaps carrying a trace of lipstick, had pressed against the mouth of this bottle.
Su Yang felt drunk—not from the water, but from her own imagination.
Because she drank too fast, a few drops escaped the corner of her mouth, trickling down her chin and onto her collar, soaking a small, dark patch into the fabric.
Wen Yusheng watched her quietly.
She watched the movement of Su Yang’s Adam’s apple as she swallowed, the slight redness at the corners of her eyes from choking, and her lips, which looked exceptionally full and moist after being dampened by the water.
Wen Yusheng’s gaze darkened.
She suddenly felt that she, too, was a little thirsty.
“Does it taste good?”
Only after Su Yang finished drinking, set the bottle down, and gasped for air did Wen Yusheng speak up slowly. Her voice was light and soft, as if she were asking about some incredible delicacy.
“It… it tastes good,” Su Yang stammered, her mind still a total blank.
“Is that so?” Wen Yusheng smiled. She reached out and, with the pad of her finger, gently wiped away the stray drop of water remaining at the corner of Su Yang’s mouth.
Her fingertip was cool, carrying a sensation that made Su Yang’s heart skip a beat.
“That’s good then.” Wen Yusheng withdrew her hand and leaned back into the seat, her tone returning to its usual gentleness. “Drink this brand of water from now on; I think it suits you.”
Su Yang nodded foolishly. Looking at the bottle in her hand, she secretly vowed that for the rest of her life, she would only drink this brand of water!
“Alright, it’s getting late. Go on up,” Wen Yusheng waved at her. “Don’t you have training tomorrow morning?”
“Oh… right.” Su Yang snapped out of her daze and hurriedly pushed open the car door to get out.
Standing by the roadside, she watched the black Porsche slowly drive away. Not until the taillights completely vanished into the night did she, like an idiot, cradle the bottle of water and wobble back toward the dormitory.
Back at the dorm, Zhao Jie was shirtless and doing push-ups.
Seeing Su Yang enter, he let out a whistle. “Yo, our big hero is back? How was it? Was the candlelight dinner with your precious Senior enjoyable?”
Su Yang ignored him.
She walked straight to her desk and then, with extreme care, placed the half-finished bottle of mineral water in the most prominent position, like a sacred treasure.
Zhao Jie watched, dumbfounded.
“Are you serious?” He leaped up from the floor and leaned over. “It’s just a broken bottle of water. Is that necessary? People would think it’s a celebrity-signed limited edition.”
“What do you know!” Su Yang shot him a glare and then, like a protective pup guarding its food, nudged the bottle closer to herself, fearing he might damage it.
This wasn’t just ordinary water.
This was water the Senior had drunk!
It was the “evidence” of her indirect kiss with the Senior!
Su Yang looked at the bottle, a “fan-girl” smile spreading across her face.
Seeing her beyond-saving state, Zhao Jie shook his head in mock grief.
It was over. Completely over.
His simple-minded friend had fallen hook, line, and sinker for that pretty Senior. And by the looks of it, she was doing so willingly and happily.
In the days that followed, Su Yang felt as though she were living in a dream.
Every day, she was like a perpetual motion machine fueled by adrenaline, tirelessly rushing between the training hall, the classroom, the library, and Wen Yusheng’s dormitory. Her roles as “guardian” and “exclusive study buddy” were flourishing.
And Wen Yusheng seemed to grow increasingly dependent on her.
She would naturally let Su Yang unscrew all her bottle caps.
She would naturally lean against Su Yang’s shoulder for a nap when she was tired of reading.
During meals, she would naturally pick out the green peppers and carrots she disliked and put them into Su Yang’s bowl.
The relationship between them became closer and more natural. So natural, in fact, that Su Yang nearly forgot that her original intention was merely to be a “good sister” who protected the Senior.
She began to grow accustomed to Wen Yusheng’s presence.
Accustomed to seeing her every day, talking to her every day, smelling that pleasant fragrance on her, and even those occasional intimate gestures that made her face flush and heart race.
She even began to look forward to it.
Hoping that Wen Yusheng would do something to her.
Hoping she would lean in close like last time and say something ambiguous in that enchanting voice.
Su Yang knew these thoughts were dangerous and not very “straight.” But she couldn’t control them. She felt like a frog being slowly boiled in warm water; even though she knew the temperature was rising and that staying would be dangerous, she was so addicted to the warmth and comfort that she had no desire to jump out.
That day, Su Yang won the league semi-finals, successfully advancing to the finals.
After the match, she was surrounded by a crowd of enthusiastic fans as usual. But this time, she had grown wiser. She didn’t wait for Wen Yusheng to come to her rescue; instead, she squeezed through the crowd herself and immediately ran to the stands to find that familiar figure.
“Senior!” She ran up to Wen Yusheng, panting, a brilliant smile of victory on her face.
“You played very well.”
Wen Yusheng looked at her, a gentle smile also reflecting in her eyes. She didn’t pull out a drink or a handkerchief this time. Instead, she simply reached out and gently rubbed Su Yang’s fluffy, sweat-dampened head.
It was like rewarding a high-performing large dog.
“This is your reward.”
Wen Yusheng’s voice was soft and tender.
Su Yang felt her heart get struck once again by this sudden “head-rub.” She stood there foolishly, letting Wen Yusheng’s hand mess up her hair, feeling as though her entire being was melting into the Senior’s lethal tenderness.
The surrounding spectators witnessed this scene and erupted into another round of screams.
“Oh my god! The head-rub! Senior Wen is too good at this!”
“Yang-God is so obedient in front of the Senior! Just like a big puppy!”
“I’m locking this CP! I’ve swallowed the key!”
Hearing the cheering and teasing around her, Su Yang’s cheeks burned, but her heart was bubbling with sweetness.
She loved this feeling. She loved being treated as “one of her own” by Wen Yusheng. She loved that their relationship was silently acknowledged and blessed by everyone.
“Let’s go.” Wen Yusheng withdrew her hand and naturally took Su Yang by the wrist. “What do you want to eat today? My treat.”
“Senior, I feel bad always letting you pay,” Su Yang said sincerely.
“Then wait until you win the championship, and you can treat me back,” Wen Yusheng smiled.
“Deal! It’s a promise!” Su Yang immediately beat her chest in guarantee.
The two of them walked out of the stadium together in broad daylight, hand in hand and intimate. Su Yang felt so happy she was practically floating. She felt that her relationship with the Senior was definitely no longer ordinary.
Although the Senior hadn’t said it explicitly, weren’t those actions and words hints?
She must like me too, right?
Su Yang’s heart was filled with sweet anticipation. She even started fantasizing that after she won the championship, she would confess to the Senior. Then, she could legitimately hold the Senior’s hand, hug her, and kiss her.
Just thinking about that scene made Su Yang feel like her face was about to catch fire.
However, she did not know.
Just as she was immersed in her beautiful fantasy, Wen Yusheng’s phone received a new WeChat message.
The sender was Zhou Mingxuan, whom she had previously blocked. He had somehow managed to find another one of Wen Yusheng’s private WeChat accounts.
Zhou Mingxuan: Yusheng, I know there might be some misunderstandings between us. But I truly want to be your friend. I heard you’re busy with your graduation thesis recently; I happen to know an expert in this field, a tenured professor at Harvard, who might be able to help you. Here is his contact information, I hope it helps.
Below the message was an attached digital business card.
Watching the message, a flash of indiscernible calculation flickered in the depths of Wen Yusheng’s eyes.
She turned her head to look at Su Yang beside her, who was still grinning like an idiot, soaked in joy.
Then, she picked up her phone and, unhurriedly, replied with two words:
“Thank you.”
