- Chapter 14 - The Training Invitation: "Will You Come See My Match?"
The voice on the other end of the line was like a drop of oil falling into clear water, instantly spreading an unpleasant, greasy sheen.
Wen Yusheng’s brows furrowed immediately.
Auntie Lin. Zhou Mingxuan. Bird’s nest.
When these keywords were combined, she understood exactly what was happening. It was her “warm-hearted” stepmother again, taking it upon herself to arrange another blind date.
Less than a year after Wen Yusheng’s mother passed away, her father had married his current wife—the aforementioned Auntie Lin. Auntie Lin had a son of her own; while she maintained a polite facade toward Wen Yusheng, she never missed an opportunity to trip her up behind her back.
Lately, she likely felt that having Wen Zi’ang deal with Wen Yusheng alone wasn’t enough, so she had started plotting “alliances” through marriage. Her goal was to find a so-called “young talent” to marry Wen Yusheng off to as quickly as possible, ensuring she remained far away from the Wen family’s center of power.
Wen Yusheng had some impression of this Zhou Mingxuan. He seemed to be the founder of an emerging tech company with a decent family background, currently enjoying a surge of popularity in business circles.
She hadn’t expected him to be so quick-footed, tracking down her phone number and address so soon and even showing up directly at her door.
A flash of coldness flickered in Wen Yusheng’s eyes. What she detested most were men who were self-righteous and uninvited.
“It’s not convenient.”
Wen Yusheng didn’t care to waste a single extra word. She spat out those three words icily, ready to hang up.
However, before she could press the end-call button, Su Yang, who was beside her, suddenly moved.
From the moment the call connected, Su Yang’s ears had been perked up like radar. Although she was standing some distance away and couldn’t hear the specifics of what the person on the other end was saying, she had heard “Auntie Lin,” “Zhou Mingxuan,” “bird’s nest,” and “downstairs at the dormitory” very clearly.
A man. Late at night. Stewing bird’s nest. Waiting at the Senior’s dormitory.
Did she even need to think about it? This was definitely a suitor!
Moreover, from the sounds of it, he was someone introduced by her family—a “match made in heaven” type of deal.
An inexplicable, sour emotion instantly surged from the depths of Su Yang’s heart. She didn’t even know why she was upset.
Logically, Wen Yusheng was so outstanding that having suitors was perfectly normal. The man sounded like he had good credentials, was vetted by elders, and came from a reliable background. If they actually ended up together, it might even be a good thing for the Senior. At the very least, there would be someone who could rightfully take care of her and protect her.
But the moment Su Yang imagined another man standing by the Senior’s side just like she did—bringing her meals, walking her back to the dorm, and perhaps even… possessing that gentle smile and those reliant eyes—her heart felt stifled. It was as if a large wad of cotton soaked in vinegar had been stuffed into her chest, leaving her feeling both sour and stung.
No! Absolutely not!
The thought leaped uncontrollably out of her mind.
She didn’t know where she found the courage, but just as Wen Yusheng was about to hang up, Su Yang lunged forward and snatched the phone away.
Wen Yusheng was stunned. She looked at Su Yang’s “ready for battle” expression—as if she were about to pick a fight with someone—and for a moment, she actually forgot to react.
Su Yang grabbed the phone, glanced at the unfamiliar number on the screen, took a deep breath, and pressed the speakerphone button. She wanted to hear exactly what this guy named Zhou Mingxuan wanted to do.
“Hello? Yusheng? Why aren’t you talking?” Zhou Mingxuan’s voice rang out again, laced with a bit of confusion.
Su Yang cleared her throat and used a voice she considered very mature and steady to speak into the phone: “Hello. May I ask what business you have with Wen Yusheng?”
Silence followed on the other end for a few seconds.
“And you are…?” Zhou Mingxuan’s voice carried a hint of wariness.
“I’m her roommate,” Su Yang lied without a second thought. “She isn’t available to take calls right now. If you have something to say, you can tell me.”
Sitting on the sofa, Wen Yusheng watched Su Yang’s “fighting on behalf of her master” act, a playful smile flickering in her eyes.
Is this little puppy… jealous?
The realization instantly brightened Wen Yusheng’s mood. She decided not to expose Su Yang’s lie and simply watched her performance in silence.
“Roommate?” Zhou Mingxuan clearly didn’t believe her. “I heard Yusheng lives in a single-person apartment?”
Su Yang’s heart skipped a beat. Damn, I didn’t do enough homework. I’ve been exposed.
But who was she? She was Su Yang! As an athlete, her brain worked fast!
“Oh, it’s like this,” Su Yang continued her nonsense with a straight face. “We’re close, so I came over today to help her with homework and plan to stay the night. What’s wrong? Is that not allowed?”
Her tone was righteous and even carried a hint of provocation.
Zhou Mingxuan was choked up by her response and let out two dry laughs. “Haha, of course that’s fine. Then please tell Yusheng that my name is Zhou Mingxuan, and I was introduced by Auntie Lin. I heard she wasn’t feeling well, so I specifically stewed some bird’s nest. I’m downstairs and would like her to come down and get it.”
“No need,” Su Yang rejected him instantly. “She’s already asleep.”
“Asleep? At this hour?”
“She wasn’t feeling well today, and the doctor told her to get some rest early,” Su Yang’s lies flowed effortlessly. “Besides, she doesn’t like greasy, sweet things like bird’s nest.”
“Is that so?” Zhou Mingxuan’s tone became suspicious.
“Of course!” Su Yang emphasized. “Our Senior loves the red date and millet porridge I cook for her! You should keep that bird’s nest for yourself!”
Having said that, she deliberately shouted toward the empty air: “Senior, do you want to drink millet porridge? I’ll cook it for you tomorrow morning!”
Then, she pinched her throat, imitating the thin, delicate way Wen Yusheng usually spoke, and replied to herself: “Okay, I like the porridge Yangyang makes the most.”
Wen Yusheng: “…”
Sitting on the sofa, watching Su Yang perform a one-man show with such gusto, Wen Yusheng almost couldn’t hold back her laughter. This idiot was truly a riot.
On the other end of the line, Zhou Mingxuan went completely silent. He was likely bewildered by Su Yang’s bizarre antics.
After a long while, he finally spoke stiffly: “Then… alright. Since Yusheng is asleep, I won’t disturb her. Please tell her that I stopped by.”
“Got it, got it,” Su Yang waved her hand dismissively, though he couldn’t see it. “If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up. We’re going to sleep.”
Without giving him another chance to speak, she ended the call with a sharp clack.
Having finished the deed, Su Yang let out a long breath, feeling like she had just won a grueling battle. She turned around, ready to claim her credit.
“Senior, look how great I am! I got rid of him in just a few words!”
However, the moment she met Wen Yusheng’s half-smiling eyes, the pride on her face froze instantly. She realized belatedly what she had just done.
Snatching the Senior’s phone, pretending to be her roommate, rejecting someone’s kindness on her behalf… and worst of all, she had pinched her throat to imitate the Senior’s voice!
Heavens!
Su Yang felt as though her skin was about to burn off from embarrassment.
“Se… Senior…” She stood there helplessly with the phone in hand, like a criminal awaiting sentencing. “I… I didn’t mean to… I just…”
She “just”ed for a long time but couldn’t squeeze out a complete explanation. She couldn’t very well say that she simply couldn’t stand seeing another man being nice to the Senior, so she acted on impulse. That would sound far too strange.
Watching her look like she was about to cry from anxiety, Wen Yusheng finally couldn’t help but let out a soft chuckle. The sound was light and pleasant, like wind chimes.
But it made Su Yang’s heart tremble. It’s over, the Senior is definitely angry. She’s laughing because she’s so mad.
“Come here.”
Wen Yusheng beckoned to her. Su Yang shuffled over like a guilty elementary student and stood by the sofa.
“Give me the phone.”
Su Yang obediently handed it over.
Wen Yusheng took the phone, but she didn’t get angry as Su Yang had imagined, nor did she delete Zhou Mingxuan’s contact info immediately. Instead, she opened the contact list, found his number, and, right in front of Su Yang, added it to the blacklist.
Once that was done, she looked up at Su Yang and spoke slowly.
“Next time something like this happens, don’t go through so much trouble.” Her voice was calm, revealing no emotion. “Just hang up directly.”
Su Yang was stunned. She looked at Wen Yusheng, then at the blacklisted number on the screen, her brain unable to keep up.
Senior… what does this mean? Is she saying I did the right thing?
“Also,” Wen Yusheng looked at her, the corners of her mouth curving into a playful arc, “my voice doesn’t sound like what you just imitated.”
Su Yang’s face turned bright red again. “I… I…”
“Want to learn?” Wen Yusheng suddenly leaned in closer. Her eyes were bright, like a night sky full of stars. “I can teach you personally.”
Her voice was dropped very low and soft, carrying a hint of captivating charm. Her warm breath brushed against Su Yang’s face, making Su Yang feel as though she were drunk—dizzy and lightheaded.
Staring at that stunning face so close to hers, looking into those shimmering eyes and those slightly parted red lips, Su Yang nodded as if possessed.
Wen Yusheng smiled. She was very satisfied with Su Yang’s reaction. She stopped teasing her and leaned back against the sofa, changing the subject.
“By the way, does your department have a badminton league coming up soon?”
“Huh? Oh, yeah.” Su Yang blinked, taking a moment to process before nodding vigorously. “It starts next week. Why do you ask, Senior?”
“Nothing.” Wen Yusheng picked up the water glass on the coffee table and took a light sip, asking as if casually, “Are the matches open to the public? Can regular students go watch?”
Su Yang’s heart skipped a beat when she heard those words. She looked at Wen Yusheng, her eyes instantly erupting with an incredibly brilliant light.
Does the Senior… want to come see my match?
This realization made Su Yang feel as if she had been hit by a massive surprise; she was so happy she felt like she might faint. She felt her blood boiling and every cell in her body screaming with excitement.
She wanted the Senior to see her. She wanted the Senior to see her at her coolest and most dazzling on the court. She wanted her to see how she poured out her sweat, how she fought with all her might, and how she defeated her opponents one by one.
She wanted to win a victory for the Senior.
“Senior!”
Su Yang’s voice trembled with excitement, but her gaze was more firm and serious than ever before. She looked at Wen Yusheng and, word by word, issued the most solemn invitation of her life.
“Next Saturday at 2:00 PM, at the Central Gymnasium. My first match.”
“Will you… come see my match? Please?”
