- Chapter 15 - Pre-match: Wen Yusheng Discovered That She Was Actually Looking Forward to It
Su Yang had recently been acting as if she had been injected with chicken blood.
Ever since Wen Yusheng promised to go watch her match, her entire being had entered a state of extreme hyper-activity.
Every morning at six o’clock, before the sky was even bright, she would crawl out of bed and run ten kilometers on the playground by herself.
During her professional classes during the day, she listened more attentively than at any other time, and her notes were packed full. Because she knew that only by establishing a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge could she better apply it to practice.
During afternoon training, she was even more desperate.
While others practiced for two hours, she practiced for four. When others were so tired they collapsed on the ground after practice, she could still add another hundred swings and a hundred “rice-shaped” footwork drills.
Her teammate, Zhao Jie, could almost no longer bear to watch.
“I say, Yangyang, what are you doing? The match is coming up soon. If you practice like this, aren’t you afraid of injuring yourself?” Zhao Jie said, wrapping a bandage around herself while looking at Su Yang with concern.
Su Yang, however, didn’t care at all.
While practicing rapid flat drives against the wall, she said without looking back, “You don’t understand, this is called pre-battle mobilization! I have to adjust my condition to its absolute best!”
“The best?” Zhao Jie rolled her eyes. “In your current state, I think it’s best if you don’t step onto the court; otherwise, I’m afraid you’ll drop dead right there from exhaustion.”
“Get out of here with your jinxing!” Su Yang stopped her movements, picked up a towel to wipe her sweat, yet her face carried an uncontrollable sense of excitement and anticipation. “I’m telling you, I must win this match! And I have to win it beautifully!”
Zhao Jie looked at her “chicken blood” state, then glanced at the chat interface on her phone screen with the beautiful senior, and understood everything in an instant.
“Oh, I get it now.” She drawled her words with an “I’ve seen through you” expression. “So you want to perform well in front of your sweetheart.”
Su Yang’s face turned red with a “whoosh.”
“What nonsense are you talking about! What sweetheart! That’s my senior!” She hurried to retort, but her voice lacked confidence.
“Yes, yes, yes, senior, senior,” Zhao Jie stifled a laugh, mimicking her tone.
“I can’t be bothered with you!”
Su Yang was made to feel guilty by her words. She grabbed her racket and began slamming the ball against the wall again.
But in her heart, because of Zhao Jie’s phrase “sweetheart,” a ripple of emotion emerged.
A sweetheart?
Is Senior Wen… her sweetheart?
Su Yang didn’t dare to think too deeply about it.
She only knew that she wanted Wen Yusheng to see her at her most impressive.
She wanted Wen Yusheng to clap for her and be proud of her.
At the thought of that scene, Su Yang felt as though her body was filled with inexhaustible strength.
She threw all distracting thoughts to the back of her mind and poured all her energy into training.
Every one of her swings was more powerful than usual.
Every one of her steps was swifter than usual.
Every one of her gazes was more focused than usual.
On the other side, Wen Yusheng’s life had also undergone a small change because of the upcoming match.
She pushed back a very important business meeting originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
When her assistant, Sister Li, heard this decision over the phone, she was so surprised she nearly dropped her handset.
“President Wen, are you sure you want to cancel the meeting with Fenghua Group? We’ve been following this project for a long time, and their President Wang places great importance on this meeting.” Sister Li’s tone was full of incomprehension.
“Cancel it,” Wen Yusheng’s tone was flat but brooked no argument. “Tell President Wang that I have something more important on Saturday afternoon. If he is sincere, move it to Sunday.”
“Something more important?” Sister Li became even more curious. “May I ask what it is? So I can explain it to the other party.”
Wen Yusheng was silent for a few seconds.
She could hardly say that she was doing it to go watch a junior two years younger than her play a badminton match, could she?
“Private matter.”
Wen Yusheng ultimately only dropped those two words before hanging up the phone.
After hanging up, Wen Yusheng looked at the time on her schedule that she had circled with a red pen: Saturday at 2:00 PM, Central Gymnasium.
The corners of her mouth curled up into a tiny arc uncontrollably.
She couldn’t explain it herself why she had made such a decision.
Logically speaking, a university badminton league match compared to a business project—the weight of each was obvious at a glance.
She was not a person who would be blinded by emotions.
She had always thought that all her seemingly “out of control” behaviors were actually within her grasp.
Approaching Su Yang, utilizing Su Yang, and enjoying Su Yang’s kindness toward her—all of this was just a game in her life, an interesting experiment.
But now, for the sake of this game, she had given up a tangible benefit.
This did not conform to her principles of conduct.
Wen Yusheng knitted her brows, attempting to analyze the logic behind this abnormal behavior.
Was it because Su Yang’s identity as a “guardian” was very useful, so she needed to use this method to maintain and consolidate their relationship?
It seemed so.
And yet… not entirely.
Wen Yusheng discovered that she was actually looking forward to it.
She looked forward to seeing Su Yang on the court.
She remembered that day in the rain, Su Yang’s stubborn back as she got half her shoulder soaked just to hold the umbrella for her.
She remembered the way Su Yang’s eyes turned red with anxiety in the school infirmary because she had fainted.
She remembered Su Yang, facing that Zhou Mingxuan, like a small animal protecting its food, baring her claws to drive away all ill-intentioned approaches for her.
This silly, single-minded girl, full of sunshine and vitality, was using a method Wen Yusheng herself hadn’t even noticed to bit by bit seep into her life and occupy her thoughts.
Wen Yusheng found that she seemed to like looking at her more and more.
She liked watching her laugh, watching her get anxious, and watching the way her heart raced and her face flushed because of a single word or action of hers.
This feeling was like raising a clingy, large dog.
Although it could be a bit noisy and rowdy at times, when you were exhausted, it would quietly lie at your feet, nuzzle your hand with its furry head, and look at you with its clear eyes.
It made you feel that in this world, there was still a little bit of warmth and beauty.
Wen Yusheng opened her wardrobe and began to consider what she should wear on Saturday.
It couldn’t be too formal, or it would look strange.
It couldn’t be too casual either; after all, she was going to cheer for her “little friend,” so she had to have some presence.
She picked and chose, and finally settled on a black dress with a simple design, paired with a light-colored trench coat.
It was both elegant and appropriate, yet not overly ostentatious.
It fit her persona of a “gentle senior” perfectly.
The night before the match, Su Yang suffered from insomnia.
She lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.
Her mind was like a movie, alternating between her heroic posture dominating the court tomorrow and the scene of Wen Yusheng sitting in the audience clapping for her.
The more she thought, the more excited she became, and the more she couldn’t sleep.
She picked up her phone, wanting to send a message to Wen Yusheng, but feared disturbing her rest.
She struggled for a long time and finally only sent the simplest “Goodnight, Senior.”
To her surprise, Wen Yusheng replied instantly.
W: Not asleep yet?
Su Yang’s heart suddenly leaped.
Yang: No… not yet, going to sleep right now.
W: Nervous?
Looking at those three characters on the screen, Su Yang felt as if her thoughts had been seen through, and her cheeks felt hot.
Yang: A… a little bit.
W: Don’t be nervous.
W: You are very formidable.
Seeing those four words, Su Yang felt as if she had been injected with a surge of powerful strength.
This was the Senior’s affirmation of her!
She felt that she would definitely be able to perform beyond her normal level tomorrow!
Yang: Mhmm! Senior, don’t worry! I definitely won’t let you down tomorrow!
W: Good, I’ll be waiting.
W: Go to sleep early and keep your spirits up.
Yang: Okay! Goodnight, Senior!
Having finished the chat with Wen Yusheng, Su Yang felt her heart, which had been restless due to nervousness and excitement, miraculously calm down.
She held her phone, reading the phrase “You are very formidable” over and over again, her smile widening until it almost reached her ears.
She felt full of power now; forget one match, even if she were asked to run ten thousand meters right now, she would have no fear at all.
With this beautiful mood, Su Yang finally fell into a deep sleep.
She had a dream.
In the dream, she won the match and took the championship.
She stood on the high podium, the spotlight shining on her.
She spotted Wen Yusheng in the crowd at a single glance.
Wen Yusheng was standing below the stage, looking at her with a smile, her eyes full of pride and approval.
Then, Wen Yusheng opened her arms toward her.
Without a second thought, Su Yang jumped down from the podium, pushed through the crowded people, and like a bird returning to its nest, plunged headlong into that warm and familiar embrace.
She heard Wen Yusheng, in that most beautiful voice, whisper softly in her ear.
“My little friend, you did great.”
The next day, Su Yang was startled awake by a burst of urgent knocking on the door.
“Yangyang! Yangyang! Wake up quickly! You’re going to be late!”
It was Zhao Jie’s voice.
Su Yang bolted upright from the bed and glanced at the time on her phone.
Seven-thirty!
Oh no! She had an appointment with someone for a pre-match warm-up at seven-thirty this morning!
Because she had been too excited last night, she had actually turned off her alarm!
Su Yang wailed, crawled out of bed at top speed, threw on her clothes haphazardly, grabbed her racket, and rushed out.
As she ran, she was still reminiscing about that beautiful dream from last night.
That embrace had been too real.
So real that she felt as if she could still sense the temperature of Wen Yusheng’s embrace and the pleasant fragrance on her body.
As Su Yang ran, she couldn’t help but giggle foolishly.
She didn’t notice at all that as she rushed out of the dormitory building, a black Porsche was parked quietly on the side of the road opposite the building.
Inside the car, Wen Yusheng watched that figure rushing out like the wind, a helpless yet doting smile appearing at the corners of her mouth.
She had specifically woken up early today, wanting to bring Su Yang a “heart” breakfast and cheer her on.
Unexpectedly, despite her haste, she was still one step too late.
Seeing Su Yang’s frantic appearance, obviously having overslept, Wen Yusheng shook her head.
This fool—she told her to sleep early, but she just wouldn’t listen.
She took out her phone and sent a WeChat message to Su Yang.
W: Breakfast is at the security booth of your dormitory; remember to go get it.
Then, she thought for a moment and added a sentence.
W: Good luck with the match.
After sending the message, she didn’t drive away immediately.
She just sat quietly in the car, looking in the direction where Su Yang had disappeared, her gaze carrying a hint of gentle expectation that she herself had not yet realized.
She thought that she might see a very exciting match this afternoon.
