- Chapter 13 - Hospital: I Am Here
Wen Yusheng looked at Su Yang’s face, which was etched with worry. Her throat moved as she tried to say something, but she found that her voice was incredibly dry, and she couldn’t make a single sound.
“Senior, do you want some water?”
Su Yang seemed like a mind-reader, instantly understanding her meaning.
Without wasting a second, she turned and ran out of the ward. A moment later, she came running back carrying a cup of warm water, with a straw very thoughtfully tucked inside.
“Here, Senior, drink slowly.”
Su Yang carefully supported Wen Yusheng’s head and brought the straw to her lips.
Wen Yusheng did not refuse.
Guided by Su Yang’s hand, she took small sips of water. The warm stream moistened her parched throat and brought a sliver of warmth to her heart, which had grown fragile due to her illness.
After drinking the water, Wen Yusheng felt as though she had finally come back to life.
“Thank you, Su Yang.” Her voice was still somewhat raspy, but she was now able to speak normally.
“Senior, why are you being so polite with me!” Su Yang said immediately, her tone carrying a hint of disapproval. “If I hadn’t failed to take care of you, you wouldn’t have collapsed. I’m the one who should be saying sorry.”
As she spoke, she began to sink into deep self-reproach once again.
Looking at her like this, Wen Yusheng felt a sense of helplessness.
This fool, why does she take everything upon herself?
“It’s not your fault,” Wen Yusheng said softly. “It’s that I didn’t pay attention to my own body.”
“That won’t do either!” Su Yang’s attitude was firm. “Starting today, I must place you under twenty-four-hour, all-weather supervision! You must eat on time, sleep on time, and you’re not allowed to stay up late anymore!”
She stood with her hands on her hips like a bossy housekeeper, announcing her decision.
Wen Yusheng looked at her and did not argue.
She knew that reasoning with this stubborn “little puppy” was useless.
Besides, being cared for so dominantly… actually felt quite nice.
The glucose in the IV bottle continued to drip down bit by bit.
Su Yang sat by the hospital bed, refusing to leave for even a step.
One moment she was checking the IV tube, fearing it was dripping too fast or too slow.
The next moment she was touching Wen Yusheng’s forehead to confirm she didn’t have a fever.
A moment later, she ran off to ask the doctor about precautions to take after the infusion was finished.
She busied herself back and forth like a spinning top, her mouth never ceasing its nagging.
“The doctor said you have low blood sugar. From now on, you must carry candy or chocolate with you and eat some immediately if you feel unwell.”
“Also, your stomach isn’t great, so you can’t drink cold drinks anymore, and you have to drink less coffee.”
“Three meals must be at fixed times and in fixed amounts. You can’t just have one meal and skip the next anymore.”
Wen Yusheng leaned against the hospital bed, quietly listening to her chatter.
She realized that she didn’t find it annoying at all.
Su Yang’s voice was very pleasant—clear and bright like mountain spring water. Although she was speaking quickly and urgently out of anxiety, that heartfelt concern was more comforting than any beautiful music.
Watching Su Yang’s busy figure, Wen Yusheng’s gaze unconsciously softened.
She remembered when she was a child and had a high fever that left her in a daze. Her mother was still around then, and she had stayed by her bedside just like this—feeding her water, wiping her face with a warm towel, and nagging incessantly in the same way.
That feeling of being held in the palm of someone’s hand, of being meticulously cherished, was something she hadn’t experienced in a very long time.
Ever since her mother passed away, she had learned to hide all her vulnerabilities and pains.
Because she knew that in that home, no one truly cared for her. Her illness, in the eyes of others, would only become a weakness to be exploited.
But now, Su Yang’s appearance was like a beam of light, brashly shining into her cold and fortified fortress.
This silly girl, who only knew how to treat her well in the most clumsy of ways, made her heart—which had grown accustomed to the cold—feel warmth once again.
Wen Yusheng’s eyes grew slightly hot.
She thought that perhaps… she should no longer treat Su Yang as merely a useful “shield” or an interesting “pet.”
Such a person deserved to be treated more seriously.
Finally, the bottle of glucose was finished.
The nurse came over to remove the needle and gave a few more instructions.
Su Yang supported Wen Yusheng, preparing to take her back to the dormitory.
“Senior, can you still walk? Or should I carry you back on my back?” Su Yang asked worriedly.
“No need.” Wen Yusheng shook her head. After the infusion, she felt she had recovered a fair amount of strength. “I can walk myself.”
She didn’t want Su Yang to work so hard anymore.
The two walked slowly on the path back to the dormitory.
The setting sun cast their shadows very long.
Su Yang followed closely by Wen Yusheng’s side like a loyal knight, ready to handle any sudden situation.
“Senior, are you hungry? I’ll take you back to the dorm first, then I’ll go buy you some porridge. How about preserved egg and lean meat porridge? The doctor said you can only eat light, easily digestible things right now.” Su Yang started worrying again.
“Okay,” Wen Yusheng nodded.
She realized she was becoming more and more accustomed to Su Yang arranging everything for her.
This feeling of not having to worry and having someone think of everything for you was truly… decadent.
But she didn’t want to resist at all.
Back at the dormitory, Su Yang settled Wen Yusheng onto the sofa, poured her a glass of hot water, covered her with a blanket, and then prepared to head out to buy the porridge.
“Senior, stay here obediently and wait for me. Don’t go anywhere! I’ll be back soon!” She nagged like she was instructing a small child, looking back with every step.
“Mm.” Wen Yusheng leaned against the sofa and nodded obediently while watching her.
Only then did Su Yang leave with peace of mind.
The dormitory became quiet in an instant.
Wen Yusheng looked around the cold, single-occupancy apartment where she had lived for over two years.
Before, she never felt there was anything wrong with this place. It was quiet, private, and undisturbed.
But now, after Su Yang left, she felt for the first time that it was… a bit too quiet.
So quiet that it felt empty and desolate.
In the air, there seemed to be a lingering trace of that faint, sunny scent from Su Yang’s body.
Wen Yusheng closed her eyes, sinking her entire self into the soft sofa.
She felt as though she had truly caught a major illness.
It wasn’t her body that was sick, but her heart.
A virus named “dependence” was quietly spreading through her heart.
And the only medicinal guide that could cure it was Su Yang.
Su Yang returned very quickly.
She hadn’t just bought the preserved egg and lean meat porridge; she had also bought several light side dishes and even a bag of fresh oranges.
“The doctor said you need to supplement more Vitamin C; it’s good for your body,” she said as she laid the items out on the coffee table.
She ladled the porridge into a bowl, stirred it with a spoon, blew on it to test the temperature, and only then handed it to Wen Yusheng.
“Senior, eat quickly, the temperature is just right.”
Seeing this series of skilled and natural movements, Wen Yusheng’s heart was touched once again.
She took the bowl and ate in small mouthfuls.
The porridge was cooked until very soft, and the fragrance of the minced meat and preserved egg blended together, sliding warmly into her stomach and making her feel much better.
Su Yang sat nearby, not saying a word, just quietly watching her eat.
That gaze was focused and satisfied, as if she were looking at some peerless treasure.
Wen Yusheng felt a bit embarrassed being watched like that.
“You eat too,” she said.
“I’ve already eaten,” Su Yang smiled. “You eat; eat a bit more.”
The bowl of porridge soon reached the bottom.
Su Yang started busying herself again—tidying up, washing the bowl, and then taking out a fruit knife to peel an orange.
Her knife skills were excellent; the orange peel was sliced thin and long without breaking.
She cut the peeled orange into small pieces, pricked them with toothpicks, arranged them on a plate, and handed them to Wen Yusheng.
“Here, Senior, have some fruit.”
Looking at the girl before her, who was as busy as a little bee, Wen Yusheng suddenly spoke: “Su Yang.”
“Hmm? What is it, Senior?” Su Yang looked up.
“You…” Wen Yusheng looked at her and asked seriously, “What do you want to do in the future?”
Su Yang was stunned for a moment.
She hadn’t expected Wen Yusheng to suddenly ask this.
She scratched her head, thought for a moment, and said, “Me? I want to join the national team, of course! Then represent the country in competitions and win championships!”
When talking about her dreams, Su Yang’s eyes instantly lit up with light.
It was a dazzling, brilliant light that Wen Yusheng had never seen before.
“And after winning the championship?” Wen Yusheng asked again.
“Afterwards…” Su Yang thought. “Afterwards I’ll retire and become a coach. I’ll teach the things I’ve learned to more people who love badminton.”
Her plan was simple and pure.
It was to spend her whole life with the things she loved.
Wen Yusheng looked at her and did not speak.
She suddenly felt that her own past struggles—all for the sake of family interests, for shares, and for a place in the boardroom—seemed so small and laughable in the face of Su Yang’s pure dream.
She seemed… a little envious of Su Yang.
Envious of her simplicity, her purity, and her passion.
Envious that she could give her all and go forward without hesitation for the things she liked.
“Senior, what about you?” Su Yang asked in return. “What do you want to do in the future?”
“Me?” Wen Yusheng gave a self-mocking smile. “I don’t have anything I particularly want to do. I’ll probably… take over the company my mother left behind, and for the rest of my life, deal with those reports, data, and people with ulterior motives.”
Her tone was very flat, but Su Yang could hear a deep sense of helplessness and exhaustion within it.
Su Yang’s heart ached again.
Looking at Wen Yusheng’s face, which appeared exceptionally fragile due to her illness, she suddenly reached out and grasped the hand Wen Yusheng had resting on the sofa.
Wen Yusheng’s hand was still so cold.
“Senior.”
Su Yang looked into her eyes and said each word with absolute seriousness.
“No matter what happens in the future, no matter how tired you are, you must remember.”
“I am here.”
These three words were very simple.
Yet they were like a stabilizing pill, instantly smoothing over all the unease and irritation in Wen Yusheng’s heart.
Wen Yusheng looked into Su Yang’s clear and steady eyes and at the hand that was tightly holding hers.
She suddenly felt that she… wasn’t so lonely anymore.
She turned her hand over and grasped Su Yang’s hand in return.
“Okay,” she said softly.
Just then, Wen Yusheng’s phone suddenly rang.
It was an unfamiliar number.
Wen Yusheng frowned and pressed the answer button.
From the other end came a voice she didn’t expect—one that carried a hint of flippancy and probing.
“Hello? Is this Yusheng? I’m the one introduced by your Auntie Lin; my last name is Zhou, Zhou Mingxuan. I heard you weren’t feeling well today, so I specially stewed some bird’s nest. I’m downstairs at your dormitory now; is it convenient for me to come up and sit for a while?”
