- Chapter 36 - Sister, I Need You!
Song Qingpei’s eyes, strained from being open for too long, were irritated by the light, causing tears to trickle down intermittently as if they couldn’t be stopped. She looked utterly pitiful.
Mengmeng sat by the bedside, gently cradling Song Qingpei’s face in her hands, her eyes filled with heartache.
Her fingers softly brushed the corners of Song Qingpei’s eyes, her voice as gentle as a breeze: “Sister, does your eye still hurt? Do you want me to blow on it for you?”
Song Qingpei forced a smile and shook her head: “It’s fine, it doesn’t hurt anymore. It’s just that the sea anemone’s irritant was too strong. It’ll take a few days to heal.”
Hearing that it would take days to recover, Mengmeng’s frown deepened. Her own eyes began to redden, as if Song Qingpei’s pain had transferred directly to her heart, and her tears started to fall as well.
“Sister, why are you still crying?”
Mengmeng’s voice carried a hint of a sob. She wiped her tears with the back of her hand, but they only seemed to flow more. “Sister, please don’t cry. When you cry, I want to cry too.”
Seeing Mengmeng’s pitiful expression, Song Qingpei felt both touched and helpless.
She reached out and gently patted the back of Mengmeng’s hand, her voice tender: “Alright, alright, I’ll stop crying. You stop too. If we keep crying, we’ll both turn into weeping messes.”
Mengmeng sniffled, barely holding back her tears, though her eyes remained red.
She leaned against Song Qingpei’s shoulder like a coquettish kitten and whispered: “Sister, please don’t touch that sea anemone thing again, okay? It hurts me to see you suffering.”
“Okay,” Song Qingpei nodded repeatedly.
Even if Mengmeng hadn’t said anything, she wouldn’t have touched those strange things again. This time had truly taught her a lesson, she would never be so reckless again in this lifetime.
The two sat quietly for a while as Mengmeng gradually calmed down.
But Song Qingpei’s thoughts began to drift. She recalled Ming Rui’s words, and a faint unease settled in her heart.
Mengmeng’s personality was childlike innocent and clingy, completely devoid of the aloofness and dominance that Ming Yu usually displayed.
Was all of this really just due to memory loss? Or was it truly related to that Dr. Gong?
Hesitating for a moment, Song Qingpei decided to test the waters with Mengmeng.
She gently patted Mengmeng’s shoulder and asked softly: “Mengmeng, do you remember Dr. Gong?”
Mengmeng’s body stiffened abruptly. Her previously relaxed expression instantly turned tense, and her breathing grew rapid, as if she had heard a terrifying name.
Suddenly, her fingers clutched tightly at Song Qingpei’s sleeve, her voice trembling: “Dr. Gong she’s a bad person! Sister, save me. I’m so scared.”
Startled by Mengmeng’s reaction, Song Qingpei quickly embraced her to comfort her: “It’s alright, Mengmeng, it’s alright. I’m here. No one can hurt you.”
Mengmeng’s body continued to tremble, her voice choked with tears: “Sister, I don’t want to remember her. She’s a bad person. She did so many terrible things to me. I’m so scared.”
Song Qingpei’s heart sank. Mengmeng’s reaction only confirmed her suspicions Dr. Gong was definitely involved in something sinister.
She gently patted Mengmeng’s back and said softly: “Alright, Mengmeng, let’s not think about it. Let’s not dwell on those things, okay?”
Mengmeng nodded, clinging tightly to Song Qingpei as if only in her embrace could she feel safe.
Song Qingpei felt a pang of bitterness in her heart. She didn’t dare to probe further, afraid that Mengmeng’s emotions might spiral out of control again.
After a while, Mengmeng finally calmed down.
She lifted her head, tear stains still visible on her face, but the tension had eased. Looking at Song Qingpei, she said softly, “Sister, I’m sleepy. Let’s go to bed.”
Song Qingpei nodded. “Alright, let’s sleep.”
Mengmeng stood up and began to undress. She fumbled with the button fastened up to her neck, complaining pitifully to Song Qingpei, “Sister, this is so hard to undo.”
Watching her struggle, Song Qingpei couldn’t help but laugh and sigh. She reached out to help undo the top button. As her fingertips brushed against the cool button, her mind went blank for a moment. The image of Ming Yu coldly ordering her to comfort Mengmeng suddenly flashed through her mind. It seemed, this was the first time she had ever undone Ming Yu’s military uniform.
While Song Qingpei was lost in thought, the intricate military uniform was swiftly peeled off by Mengmeng’s hands. Her movements were natural and innocent, without a trace of shyness, and soon she was completely naked.
Seeing her so unguarded, Song Qingpei felt both amused and exasperated.
Mengmeng slipped under the covers and reached out to grab Song Qingpei’s hand, coaxing, “Sister, come in too.”
Song Qingpei smiled helplessly, took off her outerwear, and climbed into bed.
Mengmeng immediately snuggled up to her like a kitten, wrapping her arms tightly around Song Qingpei’s waist and pressing her face against her chest, gently nuzzling. The familiar sensation of their skin touching sent a flutter through Song Qingpei’s heart.
Mengmeng carried the faint scent of pheromones, a fragrance Song Qingpei knew well, one that seemed to instantly stir the deepest tenderness within her. Her usually aloof pheromones seemed to stir restlessly, filling the air with an ambiguous tension.
Mengmeng seemed to sense the change as well. Her breathing grew quicker, and she looked up at Song Qingpei with a hint of innocent mischief in her eyes. “Sister, let’s do something fun.”
Song Qingpei froze for a moment, then remembered that every time she marked Mengmeng in the past, she would call it “doing something fun.” Over time, it had almost become a code between them no, not almost, it was practically an open secret.
But now…
Not only was there the issue with her eyes, but she still hadn’t figured out what was going on with Ming Yu and Mengmeng. She couldn’t let things spiral further out of control.
Song Qingpei gently pushed Mengmeng away and whispered, “Mengmeng, stop fooling around. My eyes still aren’t feeling well.”
But Mengmeng persisted. She straddled Song Qingpei, her hands resting on either side of her shoulders, and looked down at her with a playful glint in her eyes. “Sister, I can do it myself.”
Song Qingpei suddenly felt as though she had tripped over her own feet. These words, she had taught them to Mengmeng herself. At first, Mengmeng had been shy, tearfully accusing her of bullying her. But as time passed, she began to enjoy it and grew more proactive and cooperative. Never did she imagine that one day, the boomerang would come back to hit her so squarely.
Under Mengmeng’s teasing advances, her breathing grew ragged, and her body instinctively responded to Mengmeng’s closeness.
Mengmeng leaned down and gently captured her lips in a tender, lingering kiss.
Song Qingpei’s rationality shattered in an instant. Her hands involuntarily wrapped around Mengmeng’s waist as she returned the kiss. Their pheromones intertwined in the air, igniting a flame that seemed to consume them entirely.
But at that critical moment, Ming Yu’s consciousness abruptly took over her body.
Her gaze instantly turned icy, and her movements halted as she stared at Song Qingpei with visible irritation. “Song Qingpei, have you forgotten that your eyes haven’t healed yet?”
Song Qingpei froze for a moment before realizing Ming Yu was back.
Her face flushed crimson, and she wished she could vanish into the ground out of sheer embarrassment.
She quickly sat up and murmured, “Sorry, I, I didn’t mean to.”
Ming Yu’s face also reddened slightly. She hadn’t expected Song Qingpei someone usually so aloof and unmoved by her advances during her heat to be so easily swayed by Mengmeng.
A wave of unfamiliar emotion washed over her, leaving her both flustered and annoyed.
As she glanced down and saw the humiliating position of straddling Song Qingpei, her expression darkened further.
Ming Yu swiftly climbed off Song Qingpei, turning her back to her as she began dressing. The blush on her ears slowly spread to her cheeks, and she deliberately buttoned her collar all the way up before turning to face Song Qingpei again.
As if compelled by some deep-seated instinct, Ming Yu’s words came out laced with condescending mockery: “Weren’t you supposed to be pheromone-cold? Seems pretty active to me.”
Fortunately, Song Qingpei was too embarrassed to speak and completely missed the sarcasm in her tone. She simply straightened her clothes quietly and whispered again, “I’m sorry.”
An awkward tension settled between them, filling the air with an unspoken discomfort.
Ming Yu looked at Song Qingpei, her voice cold. “Why are you asking about Dr. Gong?”
Song Qingpei’s heart tightened she hadn’t expected Ming Yu to bring this up so suddenly.
After a moment’s hesitation, she replied softly, “I was just curious.”
“Curiosity killed the cat,” Ming Yu sneered, a hint of warning in her tone. “Some things are better left unknown.”
Though her intention was concern, her words came out sharp and provocative, stirring irritation in Song Qingpei.
Unable to hold back, she retorted, “Can’t you just speak nicely? Like Mengmeng, she’s so much better.”
“What, like a fool who obediently calls you ‘sister’?” Ming Yu looked at her with a mocking smile. “How old am I? How old are you, Song Qingpei? Do you even have the nerve?”
Song Qingpei was left speechless.
Back then, Mengmeng had been innocent and clingy, calling her “sister” in such a sweet, soft voice that it melted her heart. She couldn’t resist indulging her little preference and had let her keep using the term. Who would have thought Ming Yu was actually two years older?
Seeing her silent, Ming Yu noticed her swollen eyes and finally realized her earlier misunderstanding.
“You said earlier your eyes were tearing up because of sea anemones?”
“Yes.”
Recalling how she had humbled herself to comfort Song Qingpei for so long, Ming Yu felt utterly foolish as if Song Qingpei had been deliberately making a fool of her. Anger surged within her. “Why didn’t you say so earlier?”
Song Qingpei replied matter-of-factly, “You didn’t ask.”
“You!”
Ming Yu’s face flushed crimson with anger, yet she was utterly inept at arguing. After stewing for a long while, she could only manage an icy warning: “Stay home and don’t cause any more trouble. If something happens, I won’t be responsible for you.”
“I know. I won’t be going to work for now either. You don’t have to watch me like a prisoner.”
“I’m doing this for your own good. Don’t even think about sneaking out to see Murong.”
They were both talking past each other. Halfway through her sentence, Ming Yu finally registered Qingpei’s words and asked, somewhat dazed, “What did you say?”
Qingpei replied, “I can agree not to go to work, but you can’t restrict my freedom either.”
Snapping out of her shock, Ming Yu responded with skepticism, “You’re not planning to slip away at the first opportunity, are you?”
“Am I that kind of person?” Qingpei was clearly displeased by her suspicion.
“What do you think?” Ming Yu sneered. “How did Songsong end up being taken away by you back then?”
Mentioning Songsong brought back memories of the terrible things Qingpei had done. Her previously calmer mood soured again, and she retorted sharply, “If you hadn’t pressured me relentlessly to give up Songsong, would I have gone that far? Ming Yu, don’t you understand the saying ‘things will develop in the opposite direction when they become extreme’? If you keep forcing me to obey you with such high-handed tactics, who knows what I might end up doing.”
“You can go out, but someone has to accompany you.”
Before Qingpei could finish her harsh words, a flicker of panic crossed Ming Yu’s eyes. She hastily interrupted, choosing to relent.
“Fine,” Qingpei conceded.
At least now Ming Yu was capable of speaking reasonably, making concessions, and communicating, it was progress, however small.
Relieved by her agreement, Ming Yu glanced at Qingpei’s swollen eyes and unconsciously softened her tone. “Get some rest early. I’ll have the doctor come check on you again tomorrow.”
“Mm.”
Ming Yu stood up and left. Watching her retreating figure, Qingpei felt a tumult of complicated emotions.
After a moment’s hesitation, she picked up her phone and dialed Ming Rui’s number.
“Ming Rui, I’ve noticed something,” Qingpei said quietly. “‘Mengmeng’ seems terrified of Dr. Gong. Just mentioning her triggers a stress response. What’s even stranger is that Ming Yu has absolute control over her ‘Mengmeng’ state. She can switch into it or snap out of it at will. Just now.”
Recalling how she and ‘Mengmeng’ had nearly lost control, only for Ming Yu to abruptly regain consciousness and interrupt them, Qingpei flushed with embarrassment. She paused, took a deep breath, and then relayed everything she had observed to Ming Rui.
After listening, Ming Rui fell silent for a moment before murmuring, “I see. My suspicions are likely correct. Next, I need to verify something.”
Confused, Qingpei asked, “What are you planning to do?”
Ming Rui didn’t elaborate, only saying softly, “Miss Song, no matter what happens, please remember that my cousin truly cares about you. Whether it’s Mengmeng or Ming Yu, don’t give up on her.”
Hearing this, Qingpei’s heart tightened. Something about Ming Rui’s tone felt off.
She wanted to ask more, but Ming Rui had already ended the call.
