- Chapter 14 - The Scent of Seduction
After the banquet ended, Song Qingpei left the Ming family’s old residence alone.
By the time she returned to the Mountain and Water Estate, it was already dark. Preoccupied with her thoughts, she wandered aimlessly through the vast estate. The more she walked, the more lost she felt, uncertain of what to do next.
Dr. Li was right none of this truly belonged to her. Forcing herself to fit in would only backfire, failing to give her a sense of belonging and instead deepening her loneliness.
In such a short time, she had almost become unrecognizable to herself insecure, overly sensitive, cautious, and despondent.
Was this really her? She shouldn’t be like this.
Even as an orphan who had wandered since childhood, she had always been resilient and tenacious, overcoming every hardship.
Back then, after saving Ming Yu, she had resolutely started learning a new skill from scratch to provide a stable environment for Ming Yu and their future child. She had worked hard to earn money and adapt to her new surroundings. She was not incompetent; she had given her all for the people she cared about, striving to become a better version of herself.
But…
Ming Yu’s starting point was simply too high, so high that no matter how hard she tried, she could never reach it.
Yet Ming Yu’s appearance in her life had been nothing but an accident. She should have her own life, not remain a puppet controlled by Ming Yu. At that moment, Song Qingpei decided to set aside the accident that was Ming Yu and start seriously planning her own future.
First, she needed to find a job. Keeping busy would leave no time for overthinking.
With this thought, her mind suddenly cleared.
Yes, she should break free from Ming Yu’s control at the very least, she couldn’t rely on Ming Yu for survival. Besides, Song Song would soon start school, and being alone with Ming Yu afterward would only make her more uncomfortable.
Resolved, Song Qingpei turned back, ready to calmly discuss things with Ming Yu.
She waited in the hall for a while before Ming Yu returned, carrying a sleeping Song Song, looking utterly exhausted.
Song Qingpei hurried over to take the child. “Let me.”
Ming Yu handed Song Song over, her brow furrowed, and without a word, turned to head upstairs to the bedroom.
Hesitating for a moment, Song Qingpei called out to her, “Ming Yu, I need to talk to you.”
Ming Yu paused and turned around, her gaze cold and distant. “What is it?”
“Let me put Song Song to bed first, and we can talk afterward.”
She finished speaking and looked at Ming Yu with an inquiring expression.
Ming Yu gave her an ambiguous glance, assuming Song Qingpei had finally grown restless and come to make amends. A faint, almost imperceptible smile tugged at her lips. “Fine. I’ll go back to the bedroom to take a shower. Come find me later.”
Her tone…
sounded just like before, when Ming Yu had commanded her to soothe her, carrying a subtle hint of intimacy.
Song Qingpei couldn’t help but frown inwardly. Ming Yu’s heat period should have passed by now was she overthinking it?
She carried Song Song back to the room and carefully laid her down.
Remembering that Ming Yu had mentioned taking a shower, she deliberately waited an extra twenty minutes before knocking on the door.
From behind the door came Ming Yu’s slightly hoarse, lazy voice, “Come in.”
Pushing the door open, she found Ming Yu wearing only a thin silk nightgown, revealing a section of her pale, slender thigh as she stood with her back to the floor-to-ceiling window.
Hearing the noise, she turned around. The deep V-neckline revealed a generous expanse of snow-white, alluring skin, while her not-yet-fully-dried curls lazily cascaded over her chest, faintly obscuring the undulating curves. Under the light, her skin appeared whiter than snow, her features strikingly beautiful, with narrow, deep-set eyes and thick, long lashes casting a faint shadow.
Whether fortunate or not, Song Qingpei could now face such a tempting scene with complete calm. She strode toward Ming Yu.
“What is it?” Ming Yu raised an eyebrow and looked at her.
Song Qingpei took a deep breath and said softly, “Song Song will soon be starting school. I want to go out to work. Is that alright?”
“Song Qingpei, did you really come to me just to say this?” Ming Yu retorted with a laugh.
Her words carried a strange tone, and Song Qingpei was taken aback. “What do you mean by that?”
“What I mean, don’t you already know in your heart?”
Ming Yu sneered, lifting her hand to remove her outer sleepwear, revealing the seductive body beneath.
Her proportions were perfectly balanced, with curves in all the right places. The arc of her chest was exquisite, her waist slender and soft, and her long legs straight and shapely, rivaling those of a runway model.
Caught off guard by Ming Yu’s directness, Song Qingpei was momentarily at a loss.
She hastily took a step back, a hint of helpless anger in her voice. “I’m trying to discuss something serious with you.”
Ming Yu’s smile was mocking as she slowly approached Song Qingpei, reaching out to hook her chin. Song Qingpei turned her head to avoid the touch.
Rejected repeatedly, Ming Yu’s expression darkened. She curled her lips coldly. “Song Qingpei, know your limits. Don’t push your luck.”
Before Song Qingpei could make sense of Ming Yu’s odd attitude, Ming Yu’s fingers once again clamped firmly onto her chin, forcing her to tilt her head back and meet Ming Yu’s gaze. The condescending demeanor quickly ignited the composure she had intended to maintain.
Song Qingpei glared fiercely at Ming Yu, gritting her teeth as she hissed, “Ming Yu, I am not some plaything for you to manipulate as you please!”
At these words, Ming Yu’s face instantly turned stormy.
She could already sense the faint pheromones lingering in the air, yet this woman was still putting on airs, acting as if she’d rather die than yield. How laughable.
Unable to resist a sarcastic jab, she said, “Song Qingpei, how ridiculous you are. Who are you putting on this act of playing hard to get for?”
Such a hostile attitude finally pushed Song Qingpei past her breaking point. She forcefully broke free from Ming Yu’s grasp and turned to leave.
Feeling toyed with, Ming Yu grabbed her arm and yanked her back. In the ensuing struggle.
Crash!
The perfume Li Man had given Song Qingpei was flung from her pocket, shattering on the floor.
Both of them froze. In an instant, the rich fragrance had already permeated the entire room.
As soon as Song Qingpei caught a whiff of the scent, she felt her body gradually heating up. Remembering what Li Man had said about the perfume’s effects, she inwardly panicked.
Ming Yu, more sensitive than her, was instantly overwhelmed by the aphrodisiac fragrance, which bore a resemblance to Song Qingpei’s Alpha pheromones. It ignited the cravings of her heat, leaving her weak, flushed, and barely able to stand.
The guilty glance Song Qingpei shot her way was immediately caught by Ming Yu’s sharp perception.
This perfume is an aphrodisiac!
In that moment, overwhelming rage consumed Ming Yu.
This hypocritical woman, who spoke so righteously to her face, was actually playing such despicable tricks behind her back. No wonder the moment she saw Song Qingpei today, the pheromones in her body began to stir, and her supposedly passed heat period started to resurface.
It seemed Song Qingpei must have sprayed perfume beforehand, then came over to put on an act, hoping to make her beg for intimacy in a humiliating manner.
“Song Qingpei, how dare you! You actually used an aphrodisiac scent on me!”
Ming Yu, furious, slapped Song Qingpei across the face.
Smack!
Song Qingpei didn’t manage to dodge it. The sharp sound echoed through the room.
Surprisingly, Ming Yu looked taken aback, having not expected her to take the slap without resisting.
Song Qingpei wiped her reddened cheek with the back of her hand and explained expressionlessly, “A friend gave it to me. I forgot to put it away it wasn’t intentional.”
Ming Yu sneered, “Do you really think I’d believe such a flimsy excuse?”
“If you don’t believe me, there’s nothing I can do.”
Without another word, Song Qingpei turned to leave.
Ming Yu reached out to grab her again, but weakened by the pheromone stimulation, she had no strength to hold on. Song Qingpei easily broke free.
The two stood facing each other in a tense standoff.
Thoroughly enraged, Ming Yu’s eyes gleamed with a dangerous light as she hurled every insult she could think of:
“Song Qingpei, who do you think you are?”
“Don’t think I don’t know someone as lowly and inferior as you would do anything to climb the social ladder.”
“I’m warning you, drop those delusions of yours. If I catch you scheming again, I won’t let you off.”
“And don’t even think about using our daughter to get what you want, or I’ll make sure you never see Song Song again.”
“The greatest shame of my life was being marked by a despicable, inferior Alpha like you. And as for marrying you? Don’t even dream of it!”
Each word felt like a knife twisting in Song Qingpei’s heart, suffocating her with pain.
Song Qingpei clenched her fists tightly, nails digging deep into her palms as she struggled to hold back her crumbling emotions.
She lifted her head and looked coldly at Ming Yu. “Saving you back then was the biggest regret of my life. You don’t deserve it!”
“Say that again!” Ming Yu’s tone was icy.
“Heh!” Song Qingpei let out a cold laugh, as if seeing right through her. Mockingly, she said, “General Ming Yu, you act so high and mighty, looking down on everything about me. You think everything I do is to cling to power, to climb higher, to live a better life. But you just can’t bring yourself to believe that I truly loved you once!”
This was the first time she had laid bare their relationship in front of the now memory-restored Ming Yu and she used the words “loved you once.”
Yes, loved once, but now it had all been worn away.
Hearing this, Ming Yu froze momentarily, her expression briefly dazed.
Then, as if in self-denial, she said, “No, that’s impossible! Why should I believe you?”
Faced with her reaction, Song Qingpei found it both laughable and pitiable. The inferiority she once felt suddenly melted away Ming Yu seemed even more pathetic than she was.
She had genuinely loved, been deeply hurt, and now she had decided to let it all go.
Yet Ming Yu, from beginning to end, never dared to admit that she had loved or been loved. What she couldn’t accept was that she had been marked by a scheming woman who coveted her power and influence, and had even borne her a daughter.
At this moment, Song Qingpei found herself somewhat understanding Ming Yu. She couldn’t help but let out a low chuckle. “General Ming Yu, stripped of your status and position, do you truly find it impossible to believe that someone could genuinely love you?”
Ming Yu narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing Song Qingpei for a long moment before squeezing out a few words, “What exactly are you trying to say?”
“You’re pathetic!”
Song Qingpei sneered mockingly. “As you wish, you truly aren’t worthy of love. I must have been blind back then.”
Her words struck Ming Yu’s weak spot like a heavy stone, causing her heart to convulse with sharp pain.
Ming Yu’s eyes suddenly turned bloodshot, burning with rage. “Get out!”
Coincidentally, Song Qingpei had no desire to continue their entanglement either. She complied smoothly and left.
At the doorway, she paused and turned back. “By the way, I don’t like being falsely accused, so I should clarify the matter of the perfume. It was a birthday gift from Dr. Li Man. She misunderstood our relationship. Rest assured, I have absolutely no interest in you now.”
With that, Song Qingpei left without a trace of reluctance, leaving Ming Yu stunned.
Was today actually Song Qingpei’s birthday?
She remembered now.
Before regaining her memories, she had once celebrated a birthday with Song Qingpei.
At that time, Song Qingpei had mentioned that she was actually an orphan and didn’t know her real birthday. The day they celebrated was the anniversary of when her adoptive mother found her. Song Qingpei had even joked with her: “Since you don’t remember anything either, why don’t we celebrate your birthday on the day I found you from now on!”
Later, Song Qingpei really did celebrate her birthday on that day. Though it was just a simple small cake, they both enjoyed it immensely. At the time, Song Qingpei had promised her that she would work hard to earn money and take her out for a fancy meal on their next birthday.
Song Qingpei’s words echoed in her ears: “General Ming Yu, stripped of your status and position, do you truly find it impossible to believe that someone could genuinely love you?”
“As you wish, you truly aren’t worthy of love. I must have been blind back then.”
Suddenly, Ming Yu felt uneasy.
She couldn’t help but pick up the phone and call Li Man to verify the matter of the perfume.
When Li Man chuckled on the other end and said, “General, you’ve started using it already? How’s the effect?”
Ming Yu could no longer make out what she was saying. She only felt an overwhelming fear enveloping her, as an unbelievable truth became increasingly clear before her eyes.
It seemed Song Qingpei had truly loved her. But what about herself?
