- Chapter 15 - I Don’t Deserve It!
The next day.
Song Song sat up in bed, her eyes still heavy with sleep, and casually wiped away the drool left from her dreams.
When Song Qingpei opened her eyes and saw this, her heart felt as if it had melted.
She reached out, pulled Song Song into her arms, and kissed her smooth, tender cheek. All the unhappiness from the previous night instantly vanished.
“Mommy~”
Song Song wrapped her arms around Song Qingpei’s neck and nuzzled her face against her.
Holding Song Song, Song Qingpei recalled how she had wiped away her drool right after waking up and smiled, her eyes full of affection. “What did Song Song dream about last night that was so delicious it made you drool?”
At the mention of her dream, Song Song’s eyes lit up.
“Mommy, can we have the fish noodles you make today? Song Song really wants to eat them~”
As she spoke, she licked her lips.
“You little foodie,” Song Qingpei said, pinching Song Song’s nose with a doting expression before urging her to get up and wash up.
After freshening up, Song Qingpei carried Song Song downstairs. They had woken up quite early, and the maids were busy with their tasks. When they saw the two coming down, they greeted them with respectful expressions.
Song Qingpei wasn’t used to such conspicuous attention. Swallowing her discomfort, she approached the head cook and asked if there was any black tiger fish available, as she wanted to borrow the kitchen to make noodles.
The head cook looked troubled. “Well! Miss Song, you’ll have to ask Steward Su about this.”
Song Qingpei sighed inwardly, frustrated that even cooking a simple meal came with restrictions.
Left with no choice, she went to find Steward Su. Fortunately, when Steward Su learned that Song Song wanted to eat the noodles, he immediately arranged for the ingredients. It took quite a while to source the black tiger fish she needed.
After thanking him, Song Qingpei set Song Song down in the living room and headed straight to the kitchen.
“Miss Song, let me help you with that. The scales of the black tiger fish are hard and sharp they can easily cut your fingers,” the cook quickly advised when she saw Song Qingpei preparing to handle the fish herself.
“It’s alright, I’ve done this many times before. I have experience,” Song Qingpei replied.
With practiced ease, she picked up the lively black tiger fish, gutted it, removed the bones, and sliced the fish fillets in just a few moves, stunning the cook beside her.
“Miss Song, you’re really skilled.”
No one knew that during her days of wandering, she had often risked catching black tiger fish herself. She’d even injured her hands multiple times, leaving them bloody, before mastering such deft movements.
Song Qingpei didn’t elaborate on her past hardships. She merely smiled faintly and began cooking the noodles.
She had made this dish many times before, and soon, a fragrant bowl of black tiger fish noodles was ready.
Out of habit, she ended up preparing three servings.
Staring at the three bowls of noodles in front of her, Song Qingpei couldn’t help but smile bitterly. She really needed to break this bad habit.
Just then, Song Song came running into the kitchen, drawn by the aroma. “Mommy, is it ready yet? Song Song’s tummy is hungry~”
Seeing her mother staring blankly at the steaming bowls of noodles, Song Song tugged at Song Qingpei’s sleeve.
Snapping out of her thoughts, Song Qingpei told Song Song to wait in the dining room.
She quickly brought the noodles to the dining table. There was an extra bowl, but she figured she could just eat it all herself, even if it meant feeling a bit too full.
Faced with the visually appealing and aromatic noodles, Song Song couldn’t wait to dig in.
The two were eating happily when the sound of footsteps descending the stairs immediately caught their attention.
Ming Yu was dressed in a pristine white admiral’s uniform today, with a black insignia pinned to the collar, the mark of an admiral. Her slender waist was cinched by a black belt, and she wore military boots, holding a pair of white gloves she hadn’t yet put on.
Song Qingpei couldn’t help but pause for a moment before averting her gaze and continuing to eat with her head down.
Song-song turned and saw Ming Yu, her face instantly lighting up with joy: “Mommy, Mama made fish noodles today, and they’re so delicious! Come and try some.”
Hearing Song-song’s words, Ming Yu froze for a moment and turned to look at Song Qingpei.
But the other woman didn’t even glance up, let alone speak to her.
Suppressing her anger, Ming Yu sat down at the dining table and looked at the bowl of noodles in front of her. It was generously topped with deboned fish slices, just like the one in Song-song’s bowl.
When she turned to look at the noodles in Song Qingpei’s bowl, she froze completely.
In Song Qingpei’s bowl, there was only a fish head and some scraps of meat clinging to the bones. The noodles appeared to have been drizzled with a bit of fish broth, reminiscent of the days before she regained her memories, when Song Qingpei would always save the tender belly meat of the black tiger fish for her and Song-song.
The scene felt like a lifetime ago, and the memories she had forcibly buried seemed to be slowly resurfacing.
This sensation filled her with unease.
In her understanding, anyone who approached her always had an ulterior motive whether for money, power, or something else they always wanted something.
Thinking back to what Song Qingpei had said the previous night, her thoughts grew even more tangled.
Ming Yu opened her mouth, attempting to initiate a conversation with Song Qingpei, but the other woman was eating intently, seemingly unaware of her gaze or perhaps pretending not to notice.
Feeling ignored, Ming Yu grew irritated and spoke stiffly, “Why did you suddenly decide to cook black tiger fish?”
“Song-song wanted to eat it, so I made it.”
Song Qingpei didn’t even look up. She hadn’t intended to answer but feared Ming Yu would use it as an excuse to pick a fight, so she replied dismissively.
Ming Yu was taken aback by her cold and perfunctory attitude.
While she was still processing this, Song Qingpei had already finished her bowl of noodles. Looking up, she saw Ming Yu staring at the other bowl without eating or speaking, her expression unreadable.
An inexplicable anger surged within Song Qingpei. She’s probably cursing me in her mind, she thought. Things like, ‘How dare a lowly Alpha like her cook for me!’ Or, ‘She’s just playing the memory card to soften me up!’ Or even, ‘This is just a pity act to get my attention!’
Frustrated, Song Qingpei reached out to take the bowl of noodles in front of Ming Yu and eat it herself.
Snapping out of her daze, Ming Yu saw Song Qingpei about to take her bowl and instinctively slapped her hand away.
Smack!
A sharp sound echoed as Song Qingpei instantly retracted her hand.
A burning pain spread across the back of her hand, and she glared at Ming Yu with fury in her eyes. “What are you doing?”
Ming Yu frowned, her beautiful brows knitting together. “Who said you could touch my food?”
This remark made Song Qingpei laugh in disbelief.
“I made these noodles. Can’t I even touch them?”
Ming Yu stared intently at Song Qingpei, her frown deepening. “You made an extra bowl. Wasn’t it for me?”
Song Qingpei cursed herself inwardly, vowing to break the habit of always making three portions of everything. Coldly, she replied, “You’re overthinking it. I just felt like having a second bowl, that’s all.”
At these words, Ming Yu’s face instantly turned ashen. Was she implying that Ming Yu was being presumptuous?
“Song Qingpei, don’t go too far.”
Song Qingpei couldn’t be bothered to respond and reached for the bowl of noodles again, as if deliberately provoking her. Ming Yu sneered, pulled the bowl directly in front of herself, picked up her chopsticks, and stirred the noodles a couple of times, making a show of preparing to eat it herself.
Song Qingpei: “…”
“Mommy, Mama, please don’t fight!”
Songs Song looked worried. It seemed like Mommy and Mama weren’t getting along well.
“Song Song, we’re not fighting. Let Mommy feed you.”
Song Qingpei ignored Ming Yu and went over to Song Song, coaxing her to eat.
Ming Yu had been spacing out multiple times since morning, making her increasingly uneasy. The memories she had deliberately suppressed were gradually resurfacing and becoming clearer.
Thinking back to last night, when Song Qingpei had said she loved her, her mind grew even more chaotic.
Unconsciously, she tightened her grip on the chopsticks. As the familiar taste of the noodles filled her mouth, an inexplicable flutter stirred in her heart, and a sudden impulse took hold.
Perhaps she could give Song Qingpei a chance, a chance to get closer to her.
“Song Qingpei, I think we should have a proper talk,” Ming Yu said proactively.
Song Qingpei looked up at her suspiciously but didn’t respond, clearly waiting for her to continue.
Ming Yu deliberately acted nonchalant, stroking her chin and adopting a condescending tone. “I can try to believe what you said yesterday and give you a chance, as long as you pass my test.”
“Thank you so much!”
Song Qingpei was genuinely angered to the point of laughter. She abruptly pushed her chair back and asked, “Song Song, are you finished eating?”
Song Song patted her stomach and nodded sleepily. “Burp! Song Song is full.”
“Then let’s go.”
Song Qingpei took Song Song’s hand and prepared to leave.
Completely ignored, Ming Yu flew into a rage. She slammed the table furiously. “Song Qingpei, are you even listening to me?”
Unfazed by her anger, Song Qingpei replied indifferently, “I heard you. I’m not worthy.”
With that, Song Qingpei took Song Song upstairs.
Watching Song Qingpei walk away, Ming Yu was so furious that her face turned pale and her chest heaved violently. She took several deep breaths to suppress the rage inside her.
Without finishing her meal, she stood up angrily and stormed off.
