- Chapter 30 - No Escape
“Sister Wan, you’re not being good… You’re lying.”
The melody of “The Four Seasons” sent Xi Zhaowan’s thoughts drifting back to that day sitting on the Steinway piano bench, performing a four hand duet with Yan Qing.
The young girl’s hair swayed as every key felt free and melodious under her fingertips. Zhaowan had become infatuated with her, experiencing both expectation and loss, she had even memorized every word Yan Qing spoke to her during their tutoring sessions.
All of this came to a screeching halt when she saw the three volumes of diaries documenting Yan Qing’s secret crush on Ji Qianqian.
She should have understood sooner. Yan Qing had consistently refused to mark her, yet she had completely marked Ji Qianqian before. Perhaps she, Zhaowan, was the true obstacle between them.
Having received Wei Weizhi’s invitation, she initially wanted to refuse. But amidst her emotional turmoil and the lure of a business partnership, she had followed some inexplicable impulse and come anyway.
To her surprise, she saw Yan Qing at the Four Seasons restaurant. Across from the girl sat Ji Qianqian. Xi Zhaowan couldn’t hide her despondency as she watched Qianqian occasionally move food from her own plate to Yan Qing’s, and Yan Qing didn’t seem to refuse.
“Excuse me, I need to go to the restroom,” Xi Zhaowan said to Wei Weizhi, not waiting for the music to finish.
In the mirror, beneath the woman’s exquisite features, a storm of heartbreak lurked. Abandoning her usual calm, she washed her hands with a cold expression, as if she could wash away the lingering warmth of the girl’s touch.
As she turned to leave, a pair of warm, slender hands wrapped around her waist. The chin of the girl from her dreams rested on her shoulder, and a familiar voice whispered in her ear.
“Sister Wan, why did you leave the other day without saying hello?”
It was Yan Qing. She had followed her to the restroom.
“And, you promised me you wouldn’t have dinner with Wei Weizhi, yet here you are…” The girl knit her beautiful brows. “Sister Wan is not being good.”
What a nemesis. Xi Zhaowan sighed. “Qing’er, the tutoring is over, and I’ve been quite busy lately.”
Sister Wan is being evasive again. Yan Qing narrowed her eyes. It was clear Zhaowan had misunderstood her relationship with Ji Qianqian, yet she was forcing herself to act calm and indifferent.
“Sister Wan is lying.” She tightened her grip on Zhaowan’s slender waist, refusing to let her go. “You saw those three diaries, didn’t you?”
Yan Qing desperately wanted to explain that she hadn’t written them, that the original soul of this body had. But she found she couldn’t speak of it. The moment she thought of proactively revealing her identity, her head would throb with pain.
She suspected this was a rule of this world: she could not actively disclose her true identity.
Xi Zhaowan’s eyes dimmed. She broke free from Yan Qing’s embrace. “Qing’er, I don’t want to interfere with your path, nor do I want to destroy the feelings between you and Qianqian.”
Qianqian was someone she had watched grow up. As an elder, intruding on a junior’s romance made it even harder for her to face her own heart.
Would you believe me if I told you I never liked Ji Qianqian?
Yan Qing longed to say those words. But with the diaries as evidence, Zhaowan would never believe her.
She refused to let Zhaowan leave. “Even if I liked her before, I haven’t for a long time.”
“It’s not because of you that I don’t like Ji Qianqian, it’s simply because we weren’t a good match. You only realize these things after spending time together,” Yan Qing explained as best she could.
But Xi Zhaowan found it hard to trust her again. The internal struggle made her decide to let go of this budding attraction.
Seeing someone enter the restroom, Yan Qing pulled Xi Zhaowan into a VIP stall.
“Qing’er, it’s my fault for having thoughts I shouldn’t have had. Let’s end everything here, okay?” Xi Zhaowan didn’t believe the heavy devotion in those diaries, a lifelong crush and a deep marking could simply be brushed aside.
“The feelings between us might just be an illusion based on a few treatments.”
“None of this should have happened.”
Hearing Xi Zhaowan’s cold, resolute voice as unyielding as an ice sculpture. Yan Qing felt a surge of heat in her eyes and a bitter ache in her heart.
She couldn’t give Zhaowan any promises, but at the very least, she wanted to tell her today that her heart held no room for Ji Qianqian only for her. She wanted Zhaowan to have a little more faith in her.
She covered Zhaowan’s red lips, not wanting to hear any more words of rejection.
“Sister Wan, I know my hesitation has made you disappointed and lost.”
“I’ve always been slow when it comes to feelings, but lately, I’ve finally realized… for you, I…”
Just as Yan Qing was about to speak despite the possibility that she might leave this world in the future, she still wanted Zhaowan to know her affection and gratitude a frantic voice erupted in her mind.
“Yan Qing, something’s wrong! Qianqian was drugged and taken away by unknown people! Go save her now!”
The original soul, Yan Qinghe, had awakened. Qinghe only ever awakened when Ji Qianqian was involved.
Yan Qing was startled. In her momentary daze, Qinghe’s voice exploded again: “Where are you?! Go save Qianqian! If anything happens to her, I won’t live either, I’ll blow up my spiritual sea!”
It’s not that dire, Yan Qing thought, rubbing her forehead. Faced with an emergency, she had to stop her confession. She quickly said to Xi Zhaowan, “Sister Wan, I have something to take care of. I have to go.”
As she ran out, she followed the original soul’s instructions to call Ji Qianqian’s family.
Xi Zhaowan heard Yan Qing’s receding footsteps and the faint mention of “Qianqian.” Her eyes darkened, and she let out a tragic smile. She shook her head and walked back toward Wei Weizhi.
“I accept our partnership,” she said, extending her hand.
Flattered, Wei Weizhi took it. Beneath that professional handshake, Wei Weizhi was secretly delighted, knowing this was the first step toward Xi Zhaowan truly accepting her.
“Dammit, this chick isn’t the Young Master of the Yan family!” a burly Beta man cursed.
“They’re both pampered young ladies, but they’re different! This one is an Omega, how could you screw that up!” A balding Alpha in his forties yelled at a scrawny “Yellow Hair” Beta who had kidnapped the wrong person.
Behind them, in a dilapidated factory room, Ji Qianqian was tied to a broken bed, gagged and seemingly unconscious.
“What now? The mission failed,” Yellow Hair whispered timidly. He had only received info that the Yan Young Master was at a specific window seat in the Four Seasons restaurant. Who knew someone else was sitting there?
“This person must be Yan Qing’s friend,” Yellow Hair suggested. “Let’s lure her here.”
They decided to send news of the kidnapping to Yan Qing, demanding she come alone or they would “kill the hostage.” As they plotted, the balding Alpha became captivated by Ji Qianqian’s beauty. Smirking lecherously, he decided to enjoy himself first.
He took out a heat-inducing agent and injected it into the unconscious Ji Qianqian.
“Hey brothers, this girl’s pheromones smell amazing. You guys keep watch outside, let me have my fill first, then it’s your turn,” the man cackled.
Being an Alpha, he immediately recognized her as a top-tier Omega. Greedily, he tore off her pheromone suppressor patch.
“Damn, this little beauty has been marked by another Alpha. Quite the precocious body,” the man grinned, eager to have his way. However, he decided to “savor” the moment, injecting himself with a strength enhancing drug that gave him a drug-like, hallucinatory high.
About five minutes later, the room was filled with the pungent, gun powder-scented pheromones of the Alpha. He projected his scent, trying to force it into Ji Qianqian’s pheromones.
On the bed, the girl’s face was flushed, caught in a state between sleep and waking.
“Let go of her!”
A figure arrived like a gust of wind. Having reached the Golden Light stage, Yan Qing’s speed was incredible. The moment she caught the scent of Ji Qianqian’s pheromones, she traced them and rushed to the scene.
She was just in time. She had already dealt with the two Betas outside. Her Golden Light stage allowed her to recover one-sixth of her original power, enabling her to use items from her storage jade pendant.
She didn’t draw her sword, considering the laws of the ABO society. Instead, she used a sleeping incense, flashing behind the men with lightning speed and knocking them out.
Inside, seeing the Alpha about to harass Qianqian, the original soul’s voice nearly shattered Yan Qing’s mind: “Yan Qing, beat him to death for me!”
Yan Qing sighed. She had to appease Yan Qinghe. Before the middle-aged man could react, Yan Qing appeared behind him, knocked him out with a hand chop, and then delivered several harsh kicks to his body.
Then, she drew a dagger and cut Ji Qianqian’s bonds.
Ji Qianqian opened her eyes to see Yan Qing. Taking in her surroundings, her heart was a mess of emotions. It was “Qinghe” who had saved her regardless of the cost. Before she could say thank you, the heat surged toward her glands, she had been forced into an induced heat.
“Yan Qing, do you have a suppressor patch?” Qinghe’s voice asked in the spiritual sea.
“Uh, no.” Yan Qing felt her pockets; she didn’t have the habit of carrying them.
“Then take her to the hospital quickly!”
“Wait, it’s too late,” Qinghe panicked. “You caused this mess, you solve it. You can’t let Qianqian suffer.”
They had overheard the Betas earlier and realized the kidnappers had actually intended to take Yan Qing.
Feeling guilty, she helped Ji Qianqian up.
“Qinghe, I’m so hot… I don’t think I’ll make it to the hospital,” Ji Qianqian whispered. The drug injected into her was a potent, violent heat inducer.
“You have to mark her.” Qinghe closed her eyes in the spiritual sea. She didn’t want this, but since Yan Qing occupied her body, it was better for Yan Qing to use her pheromones to mark Qianqian than to let her suffer.
“Yan Qing, do it for me. Mark Qianqian and solve her heat,” Yan Qinghe commanded.
“Qinghe… mark me,” Ji Qianqian pleaded, her eyes filled with a complex mist looking at Yan Qing, yet also at the original soul.
Yan Qing, with Qianqian’s arms wrapped around her neck, felt caught in an impossible position. Suddenly, her phone chimed with a text.
[Sister Wan]: Qing’er, let’s live separately from now on. Don’t come looking for me anymore.
[Sister Wan]: I already have someone in mind to consider. I hope to have your blessing. I hope we can go back to the way things were before.
The two messages from Xi Zhaowan were like shards of ice, freezing the hand holding the phone.
Go back to the way things were? Between a junior and an elder? To be the “good child” she watched grow up?
Someone in mind… did she finally choose Wei Weizhi?
Yan Qing’s heart plummeted. A sense of loss she had never felt before carved a hollow in her chest, through which the wind whistled without an echo.
Her other hand was guided by Ji Qianqian to the girl’s glands. “Qinghe… help me.”
In the moment her teeth sank into the white rose scented gland, Yan Qing’s tears fell to the corner of her mouth.
She remembered the prophecy the Star Pavilion had given her Master back in the Light Spirit Continent: “When the Tianyue Star rises, the Yan family shall flourish but when the Love Tribulation arrives, the Immortal Path shall sway.”
Now, feeling this piercing pain, she finally understood. Xi Zhaowan was her “Love Tribulation.” From the beginning of her desires to the end of her dreams, it was only ever Xi Zhaowan.
And she, having met her in this life, was ultimately beyond escape.
Even if she could never return to the Light Spirit Continent, it didn’t matter. Since she could not flee, she no longer wished to hide from her destiny.
