- Chapter 29 - Four Seasons Restaurant
Looking at the two who seemed so intimate, Yan Qing almost…
“Mom, look! That sister is so cool!”
A four-year-old girl pulled at her mother’s hem, her large eyes sparkling with excitement.
“There is no sister there, stop making things up.” The woman turned her head in the direction the little girl pointed, but a maglev train sped by with a whistling wind, leaving the surroundings empty.
Had she looked just one second earlier, and with a bit of luck, she might have seen a young girl running atop the maglev train at a terrifying speed.
The person who caused the little girl’s gasp was this girl, roughly seventeen years old.
She was tall and slender, her shoulders as straight as a pine, with a lean waist and long, straight legs.
With a light leap, she landed like a nimble leopard on the roof of the super-maglev train. The vehicle surged forward like a shadow, yet her stance remained as steady as a mountain. Only the whistling wind whipped her chestnut colored hair against her porcelain neck and elegant nose.
Feeling the gusts, she frowned slightly. Holding a hair tie between her teeth, she raised both hands behind her ears to gather her long hair into a crisp ponytail, revealing a refined jawline. The movement was sharp and beautiful.
Her beautiful phoenix eyes appeared cold and ethereal when she wasn’t smiling, yet pure and bright when she did.
Standing there fearless, the speeding maglev train seemed like nothing more than her personal steed.
Suddenly, she extended her toe and tapped lightly, moving with an ethereal grace across the narrow roof as if walking on flat ground.
Her delicate ears twitched. Returning to the opening scene, the girl seemed to hear the child’s gasp. She curled her lips into a smirk and accelerated, her figure turning into a bolt of lightning, hovering three inches above the train car. If anyone had looked at that moment, they would likely have seen nothing but a blur.
Six parts ethereal, three parts radiant, and one part an indescribable allure.
She made people want to keep their distance, fearing they might stain her transcendence. Yet, they also wanted to draw close, hoping to be washed clean by her purity.
Feeling the spiritual energy surging beneath her feet like a pillar of light, the girl’s amber eyes held no joy.
It was as if she were venting her fear of impending loss, condensing her frustration into her feet as she sprinted forward.
It took her only three seconds to walk from the tail of the super-maglev train to its head.
In those three seconds, only three characters bit at her heart Xi Zhaowan!
Before leaving the house, the text message she sent had received no reply.
“Did you see that diary? It’s not what you think. I don’t like her.”
In her panic, Yan Qing had even dropped the honorifics and the original body’s way of addressing her. Whether it was “Sister Wan” or the formal “You,” none of it mattered in the face of her distress.
She was simply a helpless girl desperately trying to explain herself to the person at the center of her heart.
A gust of wind blew, causing the bell tied to the red string on her wrist to chime clearly.
It jolted her thoughts. “Qing’er, this is a blessing red string I sought for you. If you are ever scared in the future, just shake it, and I will come to your side.”
The image of the woman’s eyes, soft as water and focused solely on her, seemed to hover before her. Thinking of this, the girl gave a self-mocking smile, but she didn’t want to go home.
She didn’t want to return to that place that once soothed her soul but now brought only unease.
Simply because Xi Zhaowan was not at home.
She surely doesn’t want to return to this home anymore, she thought.
Taking advantage of the maglev train passing through a deserted area, Yan Qing hopped off. Moments later, she reached the bustling city center.
Traffic lights were everywhere, and the streets were crowded with cars and people.
Amidst the sense of detachment she felt in this strange world, her mind was filled with thoughts of Xi Zhaowan, her brow clouded with bitterness.
Just then, a young boy caught her attention. To retrieve a lost toy, the boy broke free from his mother’s hand and toddled into the middle of the road just as the light changed.
At the very moment he was about to be hit by a speeding car, Yan Qing swept him up like a whirlwind and returned him to his mother’s side.
“Baby, why did you suddenly let go of Mommy’s hand? Hold on tight, don’t wander off.”
The mother turned and saw her son by her legs, his large eyes blinking in a daze.
“Toy… toy.” The toy had dropped; he had just been on his way to pick it up.
“Look, isn’t it right at your feet?”
The kitten toy the boy had wanted to retrieve had been scooped up during the rescue and placed by his feet.
She came and went like a shadow, like a passing breeze.
Only the little brown cat toy lying on the ground, its bottom slightly swaying and its black beads of eyes staring back at the boy, remained.
So… was I just saved by a Kitten Superhero?
The driver took a sharp breath! He thought he saw a boy pass by… almost hit him!… Eh, before he could even brake, the road was clear again. Maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me. After the false alarm, the driver rubbed his eyes, thinking he really should smoke less lately.
After saving the boy, Yan Qing’s mood improved slightly. The text she sent to Xi Zhaowan finally received a reply.
She opened it with high hopes, but her heart sank the moment she saw the content.
“Qinghe, the tutoring is over. I won’t be returning to the Yan residence for the time being. I’ve already instructed Aunt Zhou to make something delicious for you.”
Holding her phone, Yan Qing sighed. “Okay,” she replied dejectedly.
“Be good, no need to wait up for me tonight.”
As if afraid Yan Qing would realize she had seen the diary, Xi Zhaowan added a thoughtful supplement.
She was still so gentle, so gentle that she wanted to minimize the harm as much as possible.
Yan Qing knew it was her own lack of decisiveness that made Xi Zhaowan lose confidence in their relationship. This was why, because of the original body’s secret crush diary, she so easily denied Yan Qing’s sincerity and assumed she still liked Ji Qianqian.
“Qinghe!”
Suddenly, Yan Qing felt a cold pat on her shoulder, giving her a start.
“So it’s you.” She looked expressionlessly at the prankster, Ji Qianqian. “Is it that hard to say hello normally?”
“Not hard.” But I just want to tease you, the newcomer thought, smiling radiantly as she tucked her arm through Yan Qing’s. “Doesn’t this show how good our relationship is?”
“I don’t think so.”
“As long as I think so.” Ji Qianqian’s face, as striking as a rose, leaned close to her neck, her breath smelling of orchids.
Covering her neck, Yan Qing took a deep breath and pulled her arm away. “Miss Ji, your skin is as thick as a city wall, as always.”
Yan Qing had no intention of getting entangled with Ji Qianqian. After all, it was the discovery of the diary about the original body’s crush on Ji Qianqian that caused the misunderstanding with Xi Zhaowan. Now, she wanted to be as far away from Ji Qianqian as possible.
She dodged toward a corner of the restaurant. Little did she know the other girl would grow more persistent, following her every step.
Yan Qing didn’t want to deal with the relentless Ji Qianqian, but she couldn’t exactly use her full power to escape in public.
Fortunately, Ji Qianqian stopped at the right time. “Don’t you have your own business to attend to?”
“This is my family’s restaurant,” Ji Qianqian said seriously.
Yan Qing looked up. Four Seasons Restaurant. It really was the Ji family’s.
“I’m hungry. Come eat with me.” She took Yan Qing’s arm again.
“Only then will I let you go.”
“Those two look a bit familiar.”
Once they were seated, Ji Qianqian pointed toward a distant table where two beautiful women were dining.
“Isn’t one of them Aunt Wan?” she asked Yan Qing.
So the reason she isn’t coming home tonight is because she’s here. Yan Qing realized this and felt a surge of frustration. Although the woman with her back turned was unclear, she was certain the person facing her was Xi Zhaowan. Her face was elegant, her manner poised and graceful as she conversed.
She saw the woman opposite Xi Zhaowan intimately smoothing out a napkin for her and serving her food and soup.
Xi Zhaowan was smiling, her eyes gentle, focused as if thinking of something far away, or perhaps looking at the person across from her.
Likely because Ji Qianqian was sitting directly in her line of sight, Yan Qing couldn’t stop staring at them.
“You’re not thinking of leaving, are you?” Ji Qianqian slowly cut into the steak on her plate.
Masking her internal bitterness and resentment, Yan Qing spoke tonelessly: “No.”
Ji Qianqian raised an eyebrow. “How about we go over and say hello to Aunt Wan?” She elegantly wiped her lips and prepared to stand up.
“No need to disturb them.” Yan Qing picked up her untouched cutlery. “Let’s eat our own food first.”
It tasted like wax. Well, I never liked eating meat anyway, she argued with herself.
She tried to divert her thoughts.
Once I reach the second level, the third level… all the way to the fifth… which scrolls still need repairing?
Currently, I’ve only repaired the first level of the Golden Light stage. What are the incantations for the second level? She recited them mentally.
No, she had to go to her. She had to explain the situation.
“Ladies, would you like some music to accompany your meal?” A Beta waiter carrying a violin approached Xi Zhaowan’s table.
“No, thank you,” Xi Zhaowan replied politely, her tone soft.
“Waiter, play a song for us.” The woman sitting opposite her waved, smiling as she called back the nodding waiter. “It’s rare to dine with you, I want a bit of a sense of ceremony.” She offered as an explanation.
The waiter raised the violin, bow ready. “What piece would the lady like?”
“Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.” The woman’s eyes crinkled as she gazed at the beautiful, elegant face across from her, her heart fluttering.
Hearing the familiar melody, Yan Qing’s brow furrowed, a lump forming in her throat.
When she turned to see the face of the person sitting across from Xi Zhaowan, her heart jolted. It really was Wei Weizhi!
Xi Zhaowan had clearly promised her she wouldn’t have dinner with Wei Weizhi.
Yet, she truly had no right to interfere just as she had guaranteed she didn’t like Ji Qianqian, only for a diary to be discovered, even if it wasn’t written by her “true” self.
How was she supposed to explain this?
