- Chapter 29 - Cannon Fodder Ex-Boyfriend 29, Whose Pheromones Do You Want Me to Like?
Qi Ziyan didn’t react for a moment. “What do you mean by that?”
Jiang Siran clenched the ring tightly in his palm. Hearing this, he looked up and glanced at the Omega who was still unclear about the number of contestants in this snatching war. He reached out to flick away non-existent dust from his coat and then sneered.
“What I mean is, you’ll know if you give Gu Shiyu a call.”
Qi Ziyan’s face turned cold. Actually, he felt some panic in his heart at this moment. But seeing Jiang Siran’s expression, clearly having lost yet still acting high and mighty, he was unwilling to do as the other said.
“Who do you think you are, giving me orders? What’s the matter? You couldn’t keep an eye on your person, and now that your defenses are broken, you’re trying to sow discord?”
Qi Ziyan’s gaze fell on the ring in Jiang Siran’s hand. He felt some regret now. Just then, he should have thrown the ring as far as possible, making the Alpha crawl awkwardly on the ground to find it, just so he wouldn’t have time to stand here being passive-aggressive.
Why should he call Gu Shiyu? They were on the same side. Besides, the goal Gu Shiyu displayed from beginning to end was Su Jingyi. If there was any relationship with Li Qingran, it was only a hostile one centered on wanting to remove him from Su Jingyi’s side. Therefore, even if he didn’t believe Su Jingyi, it was impossible for him to distrust Gu Shiyu.
Qi Ziyan thought this, but his fingertips pinching the leaf tightened unconsciously.
Seeing this, Jiang Siran let out a cold laugh and turned to leave. Since he couldn’t return to Beicheng tonight, he might as well hurry to find Li Qingran to prevent Gu Shiyu, that “oriole” in the shadows, from taking him to a place he could never find.
He didn’t want to entangle with the two Omegas, but they had no intention of letting him go. Seeing Jiang Siran and his assistant surrounded by airport security, Jiang Siran pressed his tongue against his cheek. He turned to look at Qi Ziyan and Su Jingyi, who were now standing together, his narrow eyes filled with icy impatience.
“What is the meaning of this, Young Master Qi? It’s not enough that you won’t let us leave Nancheng, now we aren’t even allowed to leave the airport?”
Qi Ziyan took a deep breath to steady himself. Facing Jiang Siran, he forced a calm expression. “I will let you leave, but not now.”
Not until Gu Shiyu brings,
“You’re not thinking of waiting until Gu Shiyu takes Qingran to a safe place, in other words, a place where I can never find him again, before letting me go, are you?”
Jiang Siran directly exposed Qi Ziyan’s little scheme. Then, seeing the other’s expression stiffen instantly, he let out a soft laugh.
“What deep friendship. Working so hard to help your good friend get the person he’s been lusting after. Truly worthy of someone who can sacrifice himself for a friend, even going so far as to face a heat cycle,”
“Shut the hell up!”
Before Jiang Siran could finish, Qi Ziyan screamed to interrupt him. “You’re just trying to sow discord between us! Do you think Xiao Jiu and I will fall for it?”
Jiang Siran smiled. “Whether you believe it or not, does the relationship between you two even need me to sow discord?”
In today’s snatching war, why did the task of taking the person away fall to Gu Shiyu? It was simply because Qi Ziyan and Su Jingyi didn’t trust each other. Both feared the other would take the person away and hide them. Thus, they chose Gu Shiyu, who seemed to have the least interest in Li Qingran.
Unfortunately, in some mystery dramas, the characters who appear the most harmless are often the most dangerous presence in the case.
“I said it before, the answer is in your own hands. Whether I’m right or not, you’ll know by calling Gu Shiyu.”
Jiang Siran looked around and rotated his wrists. Then, before anyone could react, he landed a punch directly on the face of the nearest security guard. In the next second, a scent of gunpowder, so thick it was almost choking, spread in all directions. The security guards who wanted to block him all let out muffled groans of pain upon contact with that suffocating scent.
The absolute suppression of a high-level Alpha’s pheromones left them with no ability to resist.
Qi Ziyan and Su Jingyi immediately retreated several steps. Although they were wearing pheromone suppression collars and wouldn’t have a strong reaction, they instinctively distanced themselves from that gunpowder scent.
“Jiang Siran! Releasing such a large amount of pheromones randomly, aren’t you afraid of being arrested?” Qi Ziyan shouted with a frown.
The pheromone monitors set up around the airport turned red, and alarms began to blare. But the Alpha, who had already broken through the encirclement, didn’t even look back at the Omega’s angry questioning.
“I think the police will understand the behavior of a helpless Alpha trapped in an airport in the middle of the night who was pushed to his limits!”
Jiang Siran waved his hand with his back turned. “Instead of worrying about this, you should call and ask Gu Shiyu where exactly he took Qingran.”
Are Omegas always this stubborn? After being told so many times, they still won’t pick up the phone to confirm the truth. Do they really have absolute trust in that person, or is it that they don’t want to, and dare not, face it?
Qi Ziyan squeezed the leaf between his fingers. He finally turned to look at Su Jingyi, whom he hadn’t truly faced since they met. He saw that the other was also looking at him.
They were speechless. Former friends had now become strangers. Qi Ziyan opened his mouth to say something, but the words were eventually swallowed back down. From his red lips, only a dry sentence emerged.
“Should we call?”
“Let’s call.” These two simple words escaped Su Jingyi’s lips along with a light sigh.
Did they have any other choice now? Besides, even if it wasn’t to uncover Gu Shiyu’s true intentions, they needed to make this call just to confirm Li Qingran’s current location.
Qi Ziyan didn’t say anything more. He pulled his phone from his pocket. The leaf in his hand brushed against the silver side of the phone, caught by Su Jingyi’s gaze several times. Qi Ziyan didn’t notice at all. He was still immersed in the absurd claim Jiang Siran made about Gu Shiyu taking Li Qingran away for himself.
How could that be possible? “Old Gu is an Alpha,” Qi Ziyan muttered.
“Jiang Siran is also an Alpha.” Su Jingyi twitched the corner of his mouth, his expression a mix of coldness and numbness.
Qi Ziyan, “…” That made sense. The problem was, an Alpha falling for another Alpha, isn’t that a very niche thing? Had it started becoming common without him knowing?
Qi Ziyan bit his lip with a complicated expression. Privately, he still didn’t want to believe Gu Shiyu had feelings for Li Qingran. His competition had already expanded from one Omega to an Omega and an Alpha. If another Alpha joined, the track would be too crowded.
Unfortunately, the result disappointed him. He watched as the calling interface lit up on the screen, only to hang up and go dark automatically because the other side didn’t pick up. After repeating this several times, Qi Ziyan’s face grew worse, and his grip on the phone tightened.
“So,” Qi Ziyan began.
“We were all played by Gu Shiyu.” Su Jingyi suddenly burst into laughter.
How absurd. Every single person who used to surround him had fallen for his Alpha, his brother, his lover! Whose fault was this? It certainly wouldn’t be his brother’s fault. It was these Alphas and Omegas, each one insisting on crowding around, lacking any sense of propriety, trying to snatch and seduce his brother.
They even bewitched his brother into agreeing to leave him. Did they really think he would give up? Su Jingyi let out a cold laugh. In their dreams! Even if he died, he would die with Li Qingran. His tombstone would be engraved with the title of Li Qingran’s husband, and Li Qingran’s tombstone would bear Su Jingyi’s name. They would eventually live together properly. As for those lusting after Li Qingran, they should all just die.
Seeing that Qi Ziyan’s call went unanswered again, Su Jingyi blinked and turned to leave.
“Where are you going?” Qi Ziyan called out immediately.
“Where else? To find him.” Su Jingyi looked back. Compared to the previous complexity, the blonde Omega’s eyes now held only indifference. He had completely moved to the opposite side of Qi Ziyan. When he spoke again, his tone carried a trace of blatant malice.
“By the way!” Su Jingyi acted as if he had just remembered, pointing to the leaf Qi Ziyan had been holding since the beginning like a treasure. His lips curved upward, but his words dragged Qi Ziyan, who still held a trace of fantasy about Gu Shiyu and Li Qingran, into an ice cellar. “Guess what? You and Gu Shiyu really are good friends. You both fell in love with this kind of half-dead thing at the same time.”
Qi Ziyan couldn’t help but frown. “What do you mean?”
“It means,” Su Jingyi said patiently, “Gu Shiyu’s recent phone wallpaper is a large patch of withered leaves. From the angle, someone must have taken it specifically for him. There’s even a pair of black and white shoes in the bottom right corner.”
Why should he be the only one bearing the whole truth? Why should he hide all this to maintain peace between two enemies? Since the dogs had started biting each other, they might as well have a good, messy fight. No one should have an easy time in this war!
The smile on Su Jingyi’s face grew more radiant, while his gaze grew colder under the lights. The hem of his black trench coat carved a perfect semicircle in the air, but with no wind to support it, it reluctantly clung back to the Omega’s legs.
He will eventually come back. Back to my side, Su Jingyi thought. Just like this coat, this coat Li Qingran personally gave to me.
Li Qingran sneezed.
The Alpha beside him immediately leaned in with concern. “What’s wrong? Are you cold? Wear my coat for now. Driver! Turn up the heat.”
“No need.” Li Qingran politely declined the coat Gu Shiyu offered. He rubbed his nose. “I just feel an itch in my nose.”
As he spoke, he glanced down at Gu Shiyu’s phone, which was lighting up again nearby. “Aren’t you going to answer?”
Gu Shiyu paused. His gaze fell on the screen clearly displaying the name “Qi Ziyan.” A flash of hesitation crossed his eyes, but in the end, he let the call hang up automatically. The screen went dark after a minute of being untouched.
Seeing this, Li Qingran blinked and turned to look at the shifting scenery outside the window. His face, reflected on the black glass, was cold. His features were filled with a distant indifference and nonchalance.
He didn’t care. Even though he had just asked a gentle, caring question, and his brow had knit slightly because Gu Shiyu delayed answering, it felt more like a habitual behavior or expression he used when interacting with people, just going through the motions.
In reality, he truly didn’t care that Gu Shiyu was refusing Qi Ziyan’s call. The Alpha didn’t care why he refused, nor did he care about Gu Shiyu’s true purpose in taking him away from Jiang Siran’s people. He didn’t ask about Jiang Siran, Qi Ziyan, or Su Jingyi. In fact, after being taken away for so long, he hadn’t even asked “Where exactly are you taking me?”
As far as the eye could see, the beautiful Alpha sat there quietly like an exquisite marionette, allowing others to manipulate him. No matter where he was taken, placed, or even hidden, he wouldn’t make a sound.
Obedient. Compliant. But at the same time, those grey eyes, crafted by the Creator, wouldn’t hold anyone’s figure, especially his.
Gu Shiyu unconsciously clenched his fingertips. “I’m not answering because I don’t want to cooperate with them anymore,” he said suddenly.
Inside the car lit with warm tones, he looked at the Alpha who had been staring quietly out the window. For a moment, he felt that he was the puppet in the other’s hands. There were no visible strings, yet he was still under his control.
Li Qingran turned to look. Gu Shiyu couldn’t stop himself from speaking. “Our original plan was for Su Jingyi to draw most of Jiang Siran’s attention, while Qi Ziyan blocked the Jiang family’s private jet to delay Jiang Siran at the airport. Finally, I would handle the Jiang family members around you and take you to a place we agreed upon in advance.”
“But now,” Gu Shiyu bit his lip and paused. Under Li Qingran’s still-flat gaze, he involuntarily blurted out the truth he had been suppressing deep in his heart. “I don’t want to take you there anymore.”
Li Qingran blinked, yet he still didn’t ask why. Gu Shiyu couldn’t help but lean closer to him, his voice filled with obvious urgency. “Let me take you away!”
He grabbed Li Qingran’s hand. Their eyes met. They were looking at each other on the same level, but for some reason, Gu Shiyu felt as though he were looking up at him. The pale Alpha was like a god sitting on a high platform, while he was a disheveled believer kneeling at his feet, begging for a single glance.
Just one look. If only Li Qingran could truly see him for once.
Gu Shiyu’s breathing became rapid. In the backseat where the partition had been raised, a thick scent of red wine quickly spread. Li Qingran acted as if he didn’t notice, simply watching him. “Where do you want to take me?”
“To a place where no one can find us!” Gu Shiyu said immediately.
“Us?” Li Qingran seemed surprised. His mouth parted slightly, and his gaze finally wavered with the light and shadow outside the window. “You’re going to leave with me?”
Gu Shiyu nodded instantly, his gaze earnest and sincere. His determination to leave with Li Qingran was evident. But Li Qingran laughed upon seeing this. “Are you sure?”
Gu Shiyu moved his lips, but before he could give a firm answer, Li Qingran spoke again. “Aren’t you marrying Su Jingyi anymore?”
Gu Shiyu froze.
Li Qingran’s voice continued. “What about the cooperation between the Gu and Su families? Can you really just abandon the Gu family?”
Gu Shiyu was speechless. Li Qingran withdrew his gaze, and his fingertips slipped from Gu Shiyu’s palm. The burning palm was instantly enveloped by cold air. As the temperature in his palm dropped, Gu Shiyu’s heart sank into a cold lake.
“Then, let me first take you to a place where they can’t find you, alright?” Gu Shiyu spoke again after a long while. “This way, you won’t have to see Su Jingyi, you won’t be pestered by Qi Ziyan, and you won’t have to endure the choking pheromones that Alpha Jiang releases all the time.”
Li Qingran raised an eyebrow. He seemed somewhat moved. He bit his lower lip, and a distinct small indentation immediately appeared on the soft flesh. Gu Shiyu’s gaze followed that indentation unconsciously.
“And you?” Li Qingran asked. “Will I see you?”
“Of course!”
Perhaps the Alpha’s words were too lingering, or his tone too gentle. Gu Shiyu instinctively thought Li Qingran was attached to him. But in the next second, the fantasy he had painstakingly woven for himself was shattered by the beautiful youth leaning against the car window.
“But aren’t you also an Alpha?” Li Qingran said flatly.
Gu Shiyu said, “At the very least, I won’t make you smell second-hand smoke all the time.”
Li Qingran laughed. “An Alpha’s pheromones probably don’t smell good to their own kind, right?”
The taste of blood appeared in Gu Shiyu’s throat. He opened his mouth to say something, but finally only asked, “Then do you like Qi Ziyan’s and Su Jingyi’s pheromones?”
Li Qingran leaned back against the window. Behind him was a pane of black glass drenched in rain. Water slid down the window, and for a moment, it seemed to slide into those grey eyes. His eyelashes trembled, and it looked as though it were raining inside them.
Gu Shiyu watched him through the “rain,” only able to vaguely capture a fleeting, mischievous smile in the Alpha’s eyes. “Do you want me to like Qi Ziyan’s pheromones, or Su Jingyi’s?” Li Qingran asked.
Gu Shiyu’s Adam’s apple moved. His gaze moved from Li Qingran’s face to the heavy rain behind him, then back to those grey eyes. “Neither,” he answered, looking at his own reflection in the Alpha’s eyes.
Gu Shiyu let go. “So, do you like Jiang Siran’s better than theirs?”
Li Qingran tilted his head. As Gu Shiyu let go, his hand naturally fell, and his fingers lightly rose to touch the Alpha’s cheek. His cool fingers hooked a stray lock of hair at the corner of the Alpha’s eye and tucked it behind his ear. His fingertips inevitably touched the burning skin. In the fusion of ice and fire, the itch from that strand of hair traveled from the corner of Gu Shiyu’s eye to his heart.
Gu Shiyu’s breathing grew heavy, and the red wine scent in the air became more intense. Li Qingran looked at that strand of hair. Amidst the chaotic lights, he seemed to take in Gu Shiyu’s entire being.
“Are there only these three options?” he asked. “In your heart, are these really the only three pheromones you want me to choose from?”
Crash! A bolt of thunder exploded above the car. Gu Shiyu suddenly grabbed the hand that had slid to his ear and was about to leave. He felt something in his chest explode along with the thunder. The deafening sound made him tremble uncontrollably, and his breathing turned chaotic.
Gu Shiyu couldn’t help but lean closer. The distance between them shortened further. Pure white snowflakes were stained with red wine. Amidst the clinking of ice, it was the one pouring the wine who became drunk. In a drunken daze, Gu Shiyu seemed to see his own image appear in those grey eyes. He wanted to be in those eyes, always there, and only him.
“Then would you like a fourth type of pheromone?” He pressed Li Qingran’s hand back against his face. A chill spread through his body, yet Gu Shiyu felt his blood was about to boil. “Actually, you don’t care that much about Jiang Siran, do you? You only chose to leave with him because his relationship chain with Su Jingyi is the weakest and his family isn’t in Nancheng, right?”
“You don’t like him, do you?” Just because Jiang Siran was the most useful. Then he could be useful too!
Gu Shiyu’s eyes grew brighter. “You could like a fourth type of pheromone, right?”
Li Qingran simply curved his eyes at him. “Whom exactly are you asking these questions for?”
What exactly was the fourth type of pheromone? Who was the fourth pheromone?
Gu Shiyu froze, his feverish expression turning blank. “I,”
“Gu Shiyu.” Li Qingran said the Alpha’s name for the first time. He withdrew his hand from Gu Shiyu’s burning palm, stroked his flushed cheek, and let it fall on those classic thin lips of a protagonist. Following the other’s involuntary opening of his lips, he precisely pressed his finger against the already exposed canine, a symbol of plunder.
“If you lost control this afternoon because of Jingyi’s pheromones, what about now?” Li Qingran asked. “Now, why have you lost control?”
Gu Shiyu’s breath hitched. In the next second, the black Maybach braked sharply and stopped at the side of the road.
The rain seemed to have grown even heavier.
