- Chapter 17 - Cannon Fodder Ex-Boyfriend 17 - Ten Minutes at the Door
The air seemed to freeze, but that cloying, sickly sweet fragrance continued to drift into Su Jingyi’s nose. It was so thick that his fingertips trembled slightly and his stomach churned with rising acid.
He wanted to vomit but could not.
Through that dark crack in the door, he heard their voices. He heard Li Qingran let out a low, husky chuckle.
“You want to help me that much?”
And his so-called best friend, who always claimed to stand by his side, immediately replied, “Yes, I really want to help you!”
The voice was so urgent that for a moment it was hard to tell who needed help more, Li Qingran or him.
Su Jingyi did not even need to push the door open to imagine Qi Ziyan’s current appearance. He would be pressed tightly against Li Qingran, arms wrapped around his neck, head tilted back as he kissed the Alpha’s face haphazardly, desperately craving more pheromones.
He thought he heard Li Qingran laugh again with a tone of indulgence that was entirely foreign to Su Jingyi, but it might have just been his imagination.
When Su Jingyi took a deep breath, trying to discern the sounds coming from inside the house, he suddenly realized he could hear nothing at all.
It was as if the entire world had gone silent in an instant. The surroundings were deathly still, so quiet that Su Jingyi could only hear his own heartbeat, rapid and heavy.
He should have pushed the door open to denounce the scumbag Alpha and the cheap Omega who were likely exchanging pheromones inside. Yet Su Jingyi did not move, nor did he make a sound.
He simply stood quietly at the door as if listening to a boring radio drama, his expression calm and indifferent. Only he knew what stormy emotions were surging within his chest.
The Omega’s eyes had become bloodshot at some unknown point. His throat felt as if it were being strangled, making it impossible to breathe. As the oxygen around him grew scarce, his brain began to reel with dizziness.
He felt as if he were dreaming; otherwise, why didn’t his palms hurt even though he had pierced them with his nails? On the other hand, his mind was spinning with clarity. He wondered when those two had started sleeping together. Was it after that rainy day, or before?
How many other Omegas had slipped into that embrace that once belonged only to him without his knowledge?
Why?
Su Jingyi blinked, his amber eyes filled with confusion and bewilderment.
Didn’t he say he hated his boyfriend? Previously, he had indignantly talked about finding someone to get rid of the Alpha. He had even slapped the table with a look of frustrated disappointment and said:
“What is so good about this Alpha? He has no money, no power, and he flirts everywhere. Why are you so set on hanging yourself from this one crooked tree?”
So, was the Omega’s angry denunciation of Li Qingran’s flirting only because the “flower” he picked wasn’t himself?
His fingers tightened on the doorknob. Su Jingyi felt a sudden pain in his chest, so sharp he could hardly stand straight.
In the dark hallway, the figure near the end slowly leaned down, but his back remained stiff. He looked like a fully drawn bow, the string pulled so tight it risked snapping at any moment.
As his head lowered and his hair fell over his eyes, a crazed and eerie smile slowly spread across the Omega’s pale, bloodless lips. Under the extreme contrast of red and white, it looked haunting.
He seemed to have reached a conclusion. In his pitch-black eyes, certain convictions were collapsing while new emotions were piling up.
The scent of ice and snow mixed with woody notes inside the room seemed to grow stronger, roaring and surging until it gradually swallowed every trace of that cloying sweetness.
Su Jingyi slowly closed the door and turned away. Step by step, he moved further from the door he had personally shut. His expression was calm, and his movement in pressing the elevator button was as steady as if nothing had happened.
In the hallway, a sour scent of lemon drifted by and then vanished completely. Li Qingran watched as the door, which had opened after the beep, was slowly closed after a few minutes of stalemate.
The Omega in his arms was still twitching unconsciously. His limp body slid off Li Qingran and collapsed onto the cold floor. The trembling body, paired with flushed cheeks and the faint shimmer of moisture at the corner of his mouth, made him look terribly bullied and pitiful.
But Li Qingran did not reach out to help him up. Instead, he moved aside and finally gripped the icy blue medicinal vial that had slipped from his hand several times.
The silver needle slowly pierced into his skin, which was covered in goosebumps and red patches that looked like burns. As the blue liquid disappeared, the large red marks on Li Qingran’s skin finally eased and began to recede.
The uncontrollable pheromones settled down. The air was still filled with the sweet honey fragrance, but Li Qingran’s sense of smell seemed blocked. He could no longer smell it, nor did he feel the urge to mark the other person. The intense pain caused by the struggle between instinct and reason had also vanished.
He felt as though a bucket of ice water had been poured over him from head to toe. The cold made him shiver, but his mind became frighteningly clear.
Supporting himself against the shoe cabinet, he stood up from the floor. He lowered his head, his gaze falling on the Omega curled up next to the cabinet.
Another failure.
As expected, he shouldn’t have pinned his hopes on a plan that had already failed once. Not only had he failed to provoke Su Jingyi into breaking up with him, but he had also brought a huge trouble upon himself.
How was he supposed to get rid of the Omega on the floor now?
In the pitch-black entryway, the Alpha leaned back against the shoe cabinet with some force, causing the vase on top to wobble. Fragile petals collided, and in an instant, a few drifted down onto the cabinet. A gust of wind caused by the Alpha’s movement sent them fluttering again until they finally landed next to that damp mop of chestnut hair.
Li Qingran picked up his phone, which had been pinned under a cash box.
Gu Shiyu still had not sent a message. On the screen glowing with faint white light, the message in the chat box remained at the one he had sent about Su Jingyi coming upstairs.
The other party had not replied, and the name at the top never showed the “typing” status.
So, was he too busy injecting suppressants to see it? Or perhaps, after thinking about it, he felt there was no major problem with Su Jingyi going upstairs. After all, they were still in an Alpha-Omega relationship; it was normal to be soothed by one’s Omega during a rut. As for the fact that he was about to leave Nancheng, it didn’t conflict with his current enjoyment.
Gu Shiyu stared at the chat box for a long time. Only after the screen automatically turned off did he relax his neck and look up at the brightly lit window on the top floor.
Perhaps they were already soothing each other. An Alpha in a rut has no reason to speak of. Although the Omega who just went upstairs wasn’t in heat, desire is easily triggered under the influence of an Alpha’s pheromones.
But didn’t he think of him at all? He was just sending him photos earlier, and they were messaging each other right before Su Jingyi arrived. Yet as soon as the Omega went up, he immediately tossed his phone aside, not caring if there were messages he forgot to reply to.
Was he so confident because he wasn’t afraid of him getting angry and refusing to help him leave Su Jingyi? It made sense; he wasn’t a sentimental Alpha to begin with. If Su Jingyi hadn’t been holding onto him, he might have distanced himself from this group long ago.
Thinking of this, Gu Shiyu let out a cold sneer. It was unclear if he was mocking Su Jingyi or others who might be deceived by Li Qingran’s appearance, but it certainly wasn’t a mockery of himself.
Gu Shiyu curled his lip and looked up, prepared to tell the driver to leave. This wasn’t the Forbidden City, and he wasn’t a palace guard; he had no hobby of eavesdropping or keeping watch for others.
However, the moment he looked up, he saw a figure slowly walking out of the building through the windshield.
It was Su Jingyi.
The thin shadow swayed under the streetlights, looking somewhat dazed. Gu Shiyu watched him walk out and stand frozen for about a minute before snapping out of it and looking around. He then resumed his pace, moving slowly as if all his energy had been sucked out by a spirit.
But that didn’t make sense. Gu Shiyu glanced at the time.
Was it that fast?
Uncontrollable images flashed through Gu Shiyu’s mind, but he rubbed his forehead and shook them away in the next second. What was he thinking? And were those images focused on the wrong person? How could it be?
Gu Shiyu was silent for a few seconds and then took a deep breath.
Coincidentally, Su Jingyi had reached the car. Gu Shiyu watched him open the door and get in, telling the driver to leave. The whole process was seamless. He didn’t mention the Alpha’s name, and the worry and urgency he had shown before getting out were gone.
The Omega was unusually calm.
Gu Shiyu subconsciously glanced back at the window that was still lit. “You…”
“Cancel the meeting with Jiang Siran three days from now,” Su Jingyi suddenly interrupted.
“?”
Gu Shiyu frowned and turned to look at the Omega who had suddenly changed plans. He found Su Jingyi staring at him. Those beautiful amber pupils flickered with an eerie light under the overhead lamp, and his voice sounded ethereal, like a gust of wind blowing from behind a ghost in the middle of the night.
The Omega leaned against the window, his expression reflected in the dark glass. It was gentle, sweet, expectant, excited, and filled with an unmaskable madness as if he wanted to drag everyone to hell with him.
Then, Gu Shiyu heard him continue, “I have something more important to do now.”
Ding-dong.
As Su Jingyi’s words fell, as if on cue, Gu Shiyu’s long-silent phone finally chimed. He looked down.
It was Li Qingran.
[Does your previous offer to help me with things still stand?]
