- Chapter 18 - Cannon Fodder Ex-Boyfriend 18 - The So-Called Help
Gu Shiyu stared at the line of text on his phone, his confusion deepening.
Helping out?
With what?
Does it have something to do with Su Jingyi?
Connecting it to what Su Jingyi had just said—that he had more important things to do—it was hard for Gu Shiyu not to link Li Qingran’s request to the Omega sitting right next to him.
He wanted to ask what had happened between Li Qingran and Su Jingyi during those ten minutes upstairs, but before his fingertips could hit the keyboard, the Alpha sent another message:
[Can you come up to my place for a moment?]
Gu Shiyu’s fingertips, which had just pressed against the screen, suddenly froze as if they were iced over.
Was this the kind of thing that required him to go upstairs and help?
The facts were these: the Alpha who sent the message was currently in his rut, characterized by abnormally high pheromone secretion. The Omega he was currently dating had gone upstairs specifically to soothe him, only to come back down ten minutes later looking disheveled and abnormal. Now, the Alpha was actively inviting him upstairs. Did that mean?
Gu Shiyu’s Adam’s apple bobbed.
He leaned back and shifted his posture. The Omega beside him remained silent, leaning against the window. Gu Shiyu could not resist glancing at him a few times before quickly retracting his gaze, refocusing on the silent invitation on his screen.
Surely not.
It could not be that after attempting a pheromone exchange, they found that Li Qingran could not be soothed by the Omega’s pheromones, or worse, had a violent rejection reaction, leading to a fallout. That would explain why Su Jingyi returned so quickly and demanded the driver leave immediately.
Though such things were common, it was usually due to low compatibility between an Alpha and an Omega.
But why did the Alpha want him to go up and help?
Gu Shiyu switched which leg he had crossed, his fingertips unconsciously rubbing the back of his phone. A flicker of hesitation and conflict flashed in his deep eyes.
During a rut, how could he, an Alpha, help? Was he supposed to get into a fight with the guy to let him vent the excess pheromones?
Gu Shiyu figured that was likely what Li Qingran had in mind. Or perhaps the suppressants Li Qingran bought were not working, and he needed Gu Shiyu to bring some high-potency ones. Either way, it definitely was not for soothing purposes.
With that thought, he looked down and quickly replied to Li Qingran, saying he would come over after dropping Su Jingyi off, making sure to emphasize that he would bring some effective suppressants.
Yes, exactly.
He would definitely help handle this matter properly, Gu Shiyu thought.
He took a deep breath and looked out the window, trying to calm his heart, which had, for some reason, begun to beat wildly.
However, before he was even halfway calmed down, the screen lit up again, throwing his thoughts back into disarray.
He watched as Li Qingran replied instantly:
[Alright, I will wait for you then. But no need for the suppressants; just bring yourself.]
Just bring yourself.
Just?
Wait, so, could it be?
“But that is impossible!” Gu Shiyu felt like he was having a breakdown.
An Alpha could not possibly soothe another Alpha. So, was Li Qingran actually an “A-loving-A” Alpha? Is that why he was so desperate to leave Su Jingyi and why he was immune to Qi Ziyan during his heat?
The more Gu Shiyu thought about it, the more plausible it seemed. He respected it, of course; everyone’s sexual orientation was their own choice.
The problem was, he was not.
And he could not be.
So, should he refuse?
His fingers tapped unconsciously on his knee. He stared at the latest message for a few seconds. Suddenly, he stood up and grabbed a bottle of cold water from the car’s refrigerator. The icy bottle instantly cooled his burning fingertips.
Perhaps the bottle was too full, or Gu Shiyu squeezed it too hard, but the moment he twisted the cap, the mineral water overflowed. Transparent streams ran down the sides of the bottle, wetting his fingers.
He pulled the bottle away immediately, but a few drops still landed on his trousers.
Gu Shiyu let out an annoyed “tsk” and grabbed some tissues to wipe it away haphazardly, drying the bottle and his fingers. The flat white tissue became crumpled and messy. When he balled it up and threw it into the trash, it looked even more like…
Gu Shiyu stared expressionlessly at the now-clean bottle, his gaze turning strangely vacant.
What on earth am I thinking!
There was no way he was going to help with that.
Was it because his own rut was approaching? Was his brain starting to malfunction too?
He instinctively raised the bottle to his lips, wanting a drink of ice water to clear his head. However, as his eyes fell on the sloshing liquid inside, his brain suddenly short-circuited. He jerked his hand, and the water bottle flew out.
With a thud, the water gushed out, soaking the dark gray carpet. The commotion was so loud that even Su Jingyi, who had been lost in thought, turned around in confusion.
“That… the water was too cold,” Gu Shiyu explained lamely.
Su Jingyi’s gaze became even more complicated. “So cold that your pheromones are acting up?”
Gu Shiyu asked, “?”
The Omega looked away, no longer watching him, and said coldly:
“Please rein in your pheromones. Any more and the driver is going to be forced into a ‘DUI’ from the smell!”
Gu Shiyu: “…”
He stiffened and moved further away from Su Jingyi. After a few seconds of silence, he turned back to the Omega, who was staring out the window.
“Did something happen between you and him?”
“What do you mean!”
Gu Shiyu’s words seemed to strike a nerve. Su Jingyi whipped his head around, his gaze sharp and obsessive. Just making eye contact was enough to send a chill down one’s spine.
But before Gu Shiyu could further discern the emotions swirling in his eyes, the Omega suddenly smiled. A tender, sweet expression appeared on his face, and he seemed to radiate happiness, as if recalling a blissful memory. Even his voice sounded as sweet as honey:
“Of course nothing happened. Our relationship is good, very good. And it is going to get even better.”
He would make that Alpha belong to him completely. Only him!
The smile on the Omega’s face deepened. Between his moist lips, the tip of his red tongue flickered. He seemed to have thought of a brilliant plan; his amber pupils brightened. Before Gu Shiyu could react, he turned to the driver and urged:
“Uncle Li, drive faster!”
The black Maybach accelerated through the night. The scenery blurred past, shadows and light flickering through the cabin. In the transition between light and dark, one person’s eyes grew darker, while another’s expression became increasingly complex.
The moment Li Qingran opened the door, he met Gu Shiyu’s strange gaze. The Alpha was silent, staring straight at him with eyes as dark as ink.
The smile Li Qingran had instinctively started to form froze.
What is going on? He had only asked for help moving a person. Why was Gu Shiyu looking like he was about to go on a suicide mission for the sake of humanity?
What exactly does he think he is sacrificing?
Li Qingran’s grip on the doorknob tightened, and he subconsciously leaned back a bit.
“Sorry to bother you so late, making you come all this way.”
Gu Shiyu’s expression became even more convoluted: a mix of hesitation, struggle, compromise, and eventual resignation. Finally, it all dissolved into a mellow scent of red wine pheromones.
“Yeah, it is fine. Right, we are friends, after all.”
Li Qingran wanted to close the door. He felt like he was having a run of bad luck today; he really should not be meeting any main characters. Not a single one of them was acting normal.
He did not speak, and Gu Shiyu remained silent as well.
Both sides were incredibly awkward, though neither knew exactly why the other was uncomfortable.
After a long pause, Gu Shiyu spoke first. “Oh, right. I brought suppressants for you.”
He reached out and held a case out to Li Qingran, adding, “This is the brand I usually use during my rut. It is very effective and works fast.”
“Huh? Thanks.” Li Qingran was surprised but accepted the kindness. He stepped back and smiled at the Alpha. “Well, come in first.”
Gu Shiyu’s aura, which had just barely relaxed, tensed up again.
“I still need to go in?”
Were the suppressants not enough?
“Of course.”
Li Qingran spoke as if it were the most logical thing in the world. “If you do not come in, how am I supposed to explain exactly what I need help with?”
“???”
What kind of help needs to be explained behind closed doors!
The pheromones around Gu Shiyu began to boil. He opened his mouth to say something, but Li Qingran had already turned and walked back into the house, his movements decisive and brooking no refusal.
Fine, I will go in and see.
At most, I will only go as far as helping him inject the suppressants!
Thinking this, Gu Shiyu took a deep breath, steeling his resolve. He pushed the door open and stepped inside. The very next second, he was hit by a high concentration of cedar-scented pheromones. They permeated the entire entrance, marking the territory with aggressive waves that crashed into Gu Shiyu, instantly triggering his restlessness and combat instincts.
Gu Shiyu’s body tensed uncontrollably; his dark pupils trembled for several seconds.
He moved his lips, wanting to tell Li Qingran not to try and force him this way. An Alpha’s pheromones would only incite irritation and aggression in another Alpha, never a desire to mingle!
Li Qingran had truly made a wrong move here.
And he, Gu Shiyu, was not the kind of Alpha who liked other Alphas.
However, just as Gu Shiyu bit his tongue to stay focused and looked up to tell the Alpha to withdraw his pheromones, his eyes caught a glimpse of something unexpected amidst the messy entryway.
An Omega was leaning silently against the shoe cabinet, his clothes in disarray. His flushed face seemed completely covered in some kind of liquid, looking damp and pathetic.
This was…
Gu Shiyu’s mind went blank for a moment, and he froze where he stood.
