- Chapter 38 - Embarrassment
The location for the blind date was chosen by Shang Shiqian.
It was at the Weiqi Culture Museum.
Shang Shidai teased, “You just want to visit the museum and happen to meet your fiancée along the way, don’t you?”
Shang Shiqian also felt this wasn’t ideal and pondered for a moment before asking, “Then how about changing it to Tianyi Pavilion? They have a restaurant and gardens there though it’s a bit far.”
“…” Shang Shidai pushed her out the door. “Alright, just go already. Don’t be late.”
The Weiqi Culture Museum was located in Changning District, the city center of the eastern part of the city.
Perhaps because there were too few people who enjoyed the game of weiqi, the museum entrance was deserted, with hardly anyone coming or going.
In such a setting, a strikingly beautiful woman with an elegant figure and a cool, aloof demeanor standing alone at the entrance stood out even more.
“Fourth Miss, that’s Second Miss Wei over there.”
As if following some prior instruction, the driver pointed out the person to Shang Shiqian before she got out of the car, ensuring she wouldn’t miss her blind date.
“Ah, thank you, Aunt Lan.” Shang Shiqian slung her small crossbody bag over her shoulder and stepped out of the car.
Soon, a pair of eyes landed on Shang Shiqian. She looked up toward the source of the gaze on the steps above and gave a small wave.
“…” The woman didn’t respond.
Shang Shiqian didn’t mind. She walked up to the woman and said, “You’re Wei Yixian, right? Hello, I’m Shang Shiqian. ‘Shiqian’ as in ‘time passes and things change.’”
“… I know.”
Wei Yixian’s voice matched her demeanor cool and clear, like a spring flowing over stones or a mountain stream in spring.
Just one encounter was enough to make people take an instant liking to her.
However, after greeting her, Shang Shiqian didn’t know what else to say.
After all, in the past, whenever she greeted someone, they would immediately start playing a game of weiqi.
After a long pause, Wei Yixian seemed a little resigned and dropped her aloof attitude. “Aren’t we here to visit the museum? Let’s go in.”
“Oh.”
“Do you have your ID ready?”
“I brought it!”
Wei Yixian held out her hand to Shang Shiqian.
Shang Shiqian felt a little embarrassed. Were they really going to hold hands and tour the museum on their first blind date?
But she still placed her hand in Wei Yixian’s.
Wei Yixian: “…”
She said, “Your ID.”
Shang Shiqian: “…”
She suddenly realized her mistake and quickly withdrew her hand, then frantically rummaged through her bag for her ID.
Wei Yixian noticed her ears turning red and couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh.
That laugh snapped the last thread of Shang Shiqian’s composure. She wanted nothing more than to cover her face and flee.
So awkward. So humiliating. She wished she could erase this entire experience from her memory.
Silently, she cast a spell on Wei Yixian in her mind: Forget it, forget it all, nothing just happened.
The awkwardness lingered until they entered the museum.
Shang Shiqian automatically transformed into a tour guide, enthusiastically sharing her knowledge of weiqi with Wei Yixian.
She wasn’t sure if Wei Yixian was actually interested, but she noticed that Wei Yixian listened attentively, occasionally asking questions in response.
There was a restaurant near the museum, so after the tour, the two had lunch together.
As the blind date came to an end and they were about to part ways, Shang Shiqian said, “Next time, we could visit the Tianyi Cultural Center in Gusu. The finals of the Tianyuan Tournament are held there. The winner gets to enter Tianyi Pavilion that’s my next goal.”
Wei Yixian knew.
Despite being under twenty years old, Shang Shiqian was already one of the top weiqi players in Xia Country.
At eighteen, Wei Yixian was promoted to 8-dan. In March of this year, she challenged the reigning Meijin, Chen Dongzhu, in the Meijin tournament and successfully defended her title.
Chen Dongzhu was also the Tengen, having held the title for several consecutive years in the Tengen tournament, so Shang Shiqian’s confidence was not unfounded.
Wei Yixian smiled gently and said, “Alright.”
When Shang Shiqian returned home, Shang Shidai suddenly popped out from some corner: “Back from your blind date?!”
This shout immediately drew the rest of the family out.
Their grandmother, Shang Yufeng, asked, “Did you meet?”
“Yes.”
Shang Shidai interjected, “If you hadn’t met, how could you have stayed out so long?”
Shang Shixing said, “Hard to say. What if she went to play Go instead?”
Shang Shidai replied, “Big Sis, you really understand Shang Qiguan.”
Her head promptly earned a flick from Shang Shixing: “No nicknames for family members.”
Shang Shiqian said, “I didn’t go play Go. We toured the museum together, then went for a meal.”
Shang Shidai exclaimed dramatically, “Ah, I’ve discovered yet another merit in her, she’s incredibly patient, actually willing to accompany you through the entire Go museum! That kind of temperament proves she’s no ordinary person!”
No one in the family paid her any attention.
Shang Yufeng asked, “So, what do you think of her?”
Shang Shiqian smiled. “Xiao Dai’s right, she’s very patient. Even though all I talked about was Go, which must have been terribly dull, she listened attentively to the very end.”
Shang Yufeng nodded.
In today’s restless society, this was a rare virtue many lacked.
Shang Shixing added, “Come to think of it, she really is one of the few who can patiently wait for Xiao Qian to finish a game.”
Over the years, the Shang family had certainly considered other candidates for Shang Shiqian, but without exception, they were all after the Shang family’s influence.
Whenever the Shang family evaluated these candidates, they would arrange for Shang Shiqian to be home and invite them over.
Some didn’t care whether Shang Shiqian was present, focusing only on ingratiating themselves with the rest of the family.
Some would seek Shang Shiqian out but retreat upon seeing her absorbed in a game.
Others might linger by her side while she played but couldn’t last long before checking the time repeatedly, eventually pulling out their phones to pass the time.
Only Wei Yixian was different.
She didn’t treat herself as just a tool for an arranged marriage.
Not only did she patiently wait for Shang Shiqian to finish her games, but she also made an effort to understand Shang Shiqian’s passion and joy for Go.
In her, one could see genuine respect for Shang Shiqian.
Though rumors claimed she had been forced by the Wei family to break up with her first love and that this marriage alliance served a strong ulterior motive, based on her conduct, the Shang family still placed her on their list of candidates.
The Shang family was well aware of Shang Shiqian’s flaw her tendency to lose herself in Go, disregarding everything else.
Even if this meeting was initially arranged for the sake of the alliance, they still hoped to find someone most suitable for Shang Shiqian suitable was enough; perfection wasn’t necessary.
Shang Shiqian said, “If I were to spend the rest of my life with her, I wouldn’t mind. But this has to be mutual. We must respect her wishes too.”
“Ha, I’ll notify her to propose tomorrow,” Shang Shidai declared.
Shang Shixing raised her hand to flick her again: “Go away. Stop causing trouble.”
Memories resurfaced.
Shang Shiqian let out another “Ah.”
This sound carried both sudden realization and deep remorse toward her family.
However, this abrupt voice interrupted Shang Shidai’s emotions just as they were about to erupt.
She was left with a suffocating feeling, unable to vent or suppress it.
“What are you ‘ah’-ing about?”
Shang Shiqian said, “I wanted to say, you don’t actually need to blame yourself. If I or your sister, didn’t want to go on a blind date, no amount of persuasion would work.”
Wei Yixian pressed her lips together, knowing full well these words would light the fuse of Shang Shidai’s explosive temper.
Sure enough, Shang Shidai roared furiously, “What do you know!?”
Her voice echoed through the hallway, drawing curious onlookers who peeked out from a distance.
Wei Yixian said, “Let’s talk outside.”
With that, she took Shang Shiqian’s hand and led the way out of the Treasure Pavilion.
Shang Shidai wiped the tears spilling from her eyes and stormed after them, grabbing Shang Shiqian’s arm.
“How dare you act so smug? I thought you were just a naive student, fooled by Wei Yixian because you didn’t understand the cruelty of the world. Turns out you’re also a—”
Wei Yixian cut her off sharply, “Shut your mouth!”
Shang Shidai’s hair stood on end, and the insulting word never fully left her lips.
Wei Yixian scolded sternly, “Is this the kind of upbringing a member of the Shang family should have?”
Shang Shiqian couldn’t help but glance sideways.
Though her heart ached for her scolded younger sister, she had guessed what Shang Shidai had been about to say.
Such words truly shouldn’t come from a Shang.
But she wasn’t in a position to lecture her sister now doing so would only provoke defiance.
So, she didn’t stop Wei Yixian.
After being harshly reprimanded, Shang Shidai’s tears fell in big drops.
“You yelled at me. I’m telling my sister.”
She didn’t specify which sister.
Shang Shiqian released Wei Yixian’s hand and went to comfort her. “Better not. If your sister finds out, you’ll just get another scolding.”
Shang Shidai: “…”
Wei Yixian: “…”
You’re really great at comforting people. Maybe don’t next time.
Shang Shidai actually stopped crying.
But Wei Yixian felt a sudden sense of foreboding.
The next second, Shang Shidai caught Shang Shiqian off guard and yanked the mask off her face.
