- Chapter 39 - Touch Me
Shang Shidai’s act of pulling off the mask was premeditated.
The feeling she got from “Wei Yixian’s Caged Canary” was too familiar so familiar that, despite knowing it was incredibly rude, she couldn’t resist satisfying her curiosity.
Seizing the right moment, she reached out to yank off Shang Shiqian’s mask while speaking: “It’s very rude to keep wearing a mask while talking to someone, you know? At this point, there’s no need to hide anymore.”
The rest of her words dissolved into shock as Shang Shiqian’s face was revealed, the sight searing into her trembling soul.
Her mouth reacted faster than her brain: “Shang Qiguan!?”
Shang Shiqian was also stunned.
Fresh air rushed into her nostrils, clearing her mind, but a chill settled in her heart, a coldness laced with panic and dread.
The next moment, she was pulled into Wei Yihang’s embrace.
Wei Yixian pressed the back of her head, forcing her face tightly against her ear.
Shang Shiqian caught the faint scent of shampoo lingering in Wei Yixian’s hair.
She heard a rhythmic pulse whether it was her own heartbeat or Wei Yixian’s, transmitted through her eardrum, she couldn’t tell.
The familiar face was soon blocked from view, and Shang Shidai quickly snapped back to reality.
Yet, as rationality returned, her mind went blank.
That was Shang Shiqian?
Impossible.
Shang Shiqian had already, eight years ago.
Shang Shidai wondered if she had mistaken someone else for Shang Shiqian due to how much she missed her.
She stepped forward to pull at them: “Let her go!”
Shang Shiqian also regained her senses and pushed lightly against Wei Yixian’s shoulder.
Wei Yixian paused for a few seconds.
Perhaps she realized that since Shang Shidai had already seen Shang Shiqian’s face, further concealment was futile.
She released Shang Shiqian.
Shang Shidai finally got a clear look at Shang Shiqian’s face.
But instead of clarity, her reason and emotions dragged her back into chaos.
Trembling, she cupped Shang Shiqian’s face, scrutinizing it repeatedly before nearly losing control: “This can’t be!”
More and more passing students slowed their steps, curiosity piqued by the unfolding scene.
Some discreetly pulled out their phones to record.
Wei Yixian’s expression darkened as she contemplated how to handle the ensuing gossip storm.
Shang Shiqian broke free from Shang Shidai’s grip, bent down to pick up the discarded mask, dusted it off, and put it back on.
With a sigh, she asked, “What’s impossible?”
‘That voice, it’s exactly like Shang Qiguan’s.’ Shang Shidai shuddered, goosebumps rising all over.
Her first thought was Shang Qiguan had returned as a ghost.
But the warmth and solidity of the face she had just touched were nothing like a specter’s.
Then she wondered had their mother secretly given birth to another sister without telling them?
Or had their family, unable to bear the loss, cloned Shang Qiguan?
Human cloning was internationally banned, so if true, they would have kept it hidden.
But if either scenario were real, Shang Qiguan wouldn’t be here, standing beside Wei Yixian!
She suspected her family had no idea someone identical to Shang Qiguan existed by Wei Yixian’s side.
Otherwise, at the airshow, her eldest sister would never have let Wei Yixian leave so easily.
Suddenly, she remembered Li Xiao mentioning that Wei Yixian’s assistant, Xie Mei, had been frequently visiting major cosmetic surgery clinics in East City recently.
Could she let her imagination run wild and boldly speculate:
That the Shang Qiguan before her was actually someone Wei Yixian had arranged to undergo plastic surgery to resemble.
But if it were plastic surgery, there would inevitably be records.
To destroy these records, Wei Yixian must have used leverage against these clinics, threatening them to delete the surgical records of this fake Shang Qiguan.
This matter couldn’t be brought to light, which was why Li Xiao’s parents hadn’t disclosed the details to her.
After much deliberation, this seemed to be the only plausible explanation!?
“Who are you?” Shang Shidai glared at Shang Shiqian.
Wei Yixian didn’t intervene.
She wanted to test whether Shang Shiqian truly had a reason she couldn’t admit her identity.
“Shang Shiqian.”
Both Wei Yixian and Shang Shidai’s gazes flickered momentarily.
Shang Shiqian then shifted her tone: “Would you believe me if I said that?”
Shang Shidai instinctively denied it: “There’s no way you could be Shang Qiguan!”
She grew increasingly convinced that Wei Yixian had hired someone to undergo plastic surgery to look like Shang Qiguan, intending to impersonate her for some ulterior motive.
Shang Shiqian sighed. “Then what if I said my name is Shang Shiyu? Would you believe that?”
Shang Shidai pressed her lips together.
She felt like she should claw that face to shreds.
No one but Shang Qiguan should have that face!
Yet, staring at that familiar face, she felt as if lifetimes had passed.
This was Shang Qiguan’s face she couldn’t bear to ruin it.
After a moment, she spat out bitterly, “Liar!”
Then she turned her furious gaze to Wei Yixian. “Wei Yixian, you’ve sunk to new lows. To get back at us, you’d go so far as to have someone altered to look like Shang Qiguan, then keep her as your Caged Canary, even making her learn Go to indulge some twisted fetish of yours. You’re disgusting.”
Shang Shiqian’s head buzzed at the accusations.
Her family’s prejudice against Wei Yixian ran far too deep.
To mediate their conflict and prevent Shang Shidai from descending further into the role of a villainess, Shang Shiqian said:
“My face is natural, no plastic surgery, and I have no connection to Wei Yixian. If you don’t believe me, you can draw my blood for testing.”
Wei Yixian suddenly grabbed her wrist and pulled her away.
Shang Shidai stood frozen for a long moment before suddenly springing into action like a released coil, bolting out of East City University’s gates.
But Wei Yixian and the others were already gone.
–
Inside an unlicensed new car.
Shang Shiqian spotted Shang Shidai passing by and was about to roll down the window.
Wei Yixian said, “Remember what I told you.”
Shang Shiqian thought: You’ve said so many things which one exactly?
But given the circumstances, it was likely a warning against further entanglement with Shang Shidai.
Shang Shiqian glanced at Pu Feifei in the driver’s seat, then turned back to Wei Yixian.
“Wei Yixian, why did you come here so suddenly today?”
Wei Yixian leaned back against the seat, eyes closed as if resting.
She had come because Chu Fei had spotted Shang Shidai.
Seeing Shang Shidai wasn’t unusual, but her rushing frantically to East City University had piqued curiosity.
Considering Shang Shidai’s reaction upon learning Wei Yixian had a “Caged Canary,” along with the incident at the airshow.
The cautious Chu Fei decided it was better to report it to Wei Yixian than risk overlooking something.
After all, last time she had watched helplessly as Shang Shiqian was taken away, which had already disappointed Wei Yixian greatly.
If she noticed something unusual this time but failed to report it, her career as a bodyguard might end prematurely.
Upon learning that Shang Shidai had appeared at East City University, Wei Yixian immediately had Pu Feifei drive her over in the newly purchased car.
When she arrived within about a hundred meters of the Treasure Pavilion, she overheard Shang Shiqian’s conversation with the system and realized that Shang Shidai had indeed come for Shang Shiqian.
Despite her best efforts to prevent Shang Shidai from recognizing Shang Shiqian.
Unfortunately, she still couldn’t stop it.
As a result, the situation became even more complicated.
Shang Shiqian guessed, “You didn’t plant some kind of spy near me, did you?”
Wei Yixian replied, “Some things are better left unsaid. Asking will only lead to awkwardness, whether I answer or not.”
Shang Shiqian giggled.
Who would have thought Wei Yixian could be put in such a difficult position?
Actually, the day Xiao Luomeng picked her up to go to Huayang Park, she had already suspected that Wei Yixian might not have withdrawn the bodyguards around her.
Today’s events only confirmed her guess.
Shang Shiqian asked again, “Then do you think I’ve had plastic surgery?”
There was no reason for everyone else to think so while Wei Yixian hadn’t considered it.
When she first reunited with Wei Yixian, the latter’s hostile attitude toward her might have been because she assumed Shang Shiqian had also undergone surgery to look like her and was out there scamming people.
Wei Yixian lifted her gaze and stared at her. “My opinion doesn’t matter evidence does. I need proof that you’ve had surgery. Otherwise…”
Shang Shiqian suddenly leaned closer. “Why don’t you feel my face to check for any surgical marks?”
Wei Yixian’s heart skipped a beat at the sudden proximity.
After a brief silence, she asked, “‘Also’?”
“Xiao Luomeng, the friend who once gave me a ride out of the wilderness, she can tell if someone’s had plastic surgery.”
Originally not planning to bother, Wei Yixian’s eyes darkened. She raised her left hand to grip Shang Shiqian’s chin, while her right index finger traced the contours of her features, starting from the brow and following the bridge of her nose.
The close proximity allowed Shang Shiqian to study Wei Yixian in detail.
Perhaps because Wei Yixian had intended to rest at home, she wasn’t wearing makeup. Her natural, understated appearance softened her usual sharp, intimidating aura.
Shang Shiqian felt as if she were seeing the Wei Yixian from a year ago no, nine years ago.
Back then, Wei Yixian had also been cool and distant, but those who spent time with her would discover an intellectual gentleness beneath the surface.
It was a pure and beautiful demeanor, untouched by violence and bloodshed.
She must have endured immense pressure over the years, hadn’t she?
Shang Shiqian couldn’t help but worry. Shang Shidai was convinced that Wei Yixian would seek revenge against the Shang family had they done something truly unforgivable to her?
She had originally thought Wei Yixian was just a nameless cannon fodder character in the novel, so the Shang family likely wouldn’t have much involvement either.
In the derivative world of the novel, no involvement usually meant relative safety.
Unlike her, a uniquely doomed cannon fodder.
But it seemed the conflict between the Shang family and Wei Yixian ran deep.
Maybe she should revisit the original novel when she had time. She needed to understand the grudge between the Shang family and Wei Yixian and the Shang family’s ultimate fate.
“What are you thinking about?” Wei Yixian’s fingertips brushed against Shang Shiqian’s lips before abruptly withdrawing.
Shang Shiqian’s thoughts came to an abrupt halt.
The words slipped out before she could stop them: “I was thinking, you’re still just as beautiful.”
Wei Yixian froze, the tips of her ears turning slightly red.
After a long pause, she asked in her typical domineering CEO tone: “Are you trying to flirt with me?”
Shang Shiqian considered this. Since Wei Yixian had repeatedly emphasized there was no rekindled romance with her white moonlight, perhaps she could be a little more confident in cultivating feelings with Wei Yixian?
With this in mind, she didn’t deny it.
Yet she couldn’t help mocking herself internally.
She had thought resurrection was just a fleeting dream.
Unable to make up for pre-death regrets or change anything, she might as well treat it as a carefree, beautiful dream.
But a dream, after all, is just a dream.
In this world, she had not only unfinished business but too many emotional entanglements people she couldn’t let go of.
The longer she stayed, the greedier she became, wanting more and more.
No wonder in supernatural tales, evil spirits were often those who lingered too long in the mortal world.
To accumulate more energy and extend her lifeline at least until she resolved the Shang family’s hidden dangers she might have to comply with the system’s wishes and attempt to “conquer” Wei Yixian.
This filled her with guilt and unease, feeling like she was profaning Wei Yixian’s feelings.
Two seconds later.
Shang Shiqian resignedly thought: Let’s keep this as a backup plan for now.
She still had over a month left to try solving this problem first.
If all else failed, she could always execute the backup plan.
Shang Shiqian asked, “Now that Shang Shidai has seen my face and seems to have misunderstood something, what do you plan to do?”
If Wei Yixian had no solution, she’d have no choice but to offer her blood for the Shang family’s research.
“…” Wei Yixian’s mood was like stepping on a plate of overnight curry while strolling on clouds.
Her expression suddenly darkened as she addressed Pu Feifei in the driver’s seat, who had been pretending to be blind, deaf, and disabled: “Take us home.”
Shang Shiqian didn’t understand her sudden mood shift, assuming the topic had genuinely upset her.
Upon arriving home, Weng Qizheng called.
Hearing his concerned voice asking, “I heard someone came to school looking for you, and you never returned to the Go Room. Are you alright?”
Only then did Shang Shiqian remember she’d forgotten to inform the Go Room members.
After reassuring Weng Qizheng, she told Wei Yixian, “My backpack is still at school. I need to retrieve it.”
Wei Yixian said, “It’s just a backpack. Tomorrow or another day.”
The “another day” was rather telling.
Shang Shiqian contacted Chen Yixun, asking her to retrieve and temporarily hold onto it.
Wei Yixian headed upstairs while making a call.
Shang Shiqian faintly heard her say, “whoever posted it online gets a lawyer’s letter. If it’s not taken down within five minutes, we’re filing a lawsuit immediately.”
Shang Shiqian guessed Wei Yixian was dealing with the students who had taken photos and videos.
If their public confrontation spread online, it would undoubtedly escalate tensions between the Shang family and Wei Yixian.
Thus, Shang Shiqian approved of Wei Yixian’s approach.
However, while students were manageable, Shang Shidai would be trickier to handle.
CEO Wei: Didn’t you say you studied the tutorials? Driving skills, in-car romance escalation, where are these skills?
Shang Four: Next time. We had an audience today.
Pu Feifei: So, I should’ve been under the car instead?
