- Chapter 37 - The Confrontation
Despite being scolded and warned by her eldest sister, Shang Shidai still couldn’t swallow her anger.
She thought Wei Yixian bringing the Caged Canary to the airshow was downright insulting.
So she asked her wealthy second-generation friend Li Xiao, who had initially spotted Wei Yixian picking up the Caged Canary, to help track the person down.
She wasn’t looking to pick a fight, nor did she intend to make things difficult for the other party.
She just wanted to know who this person was and whether they were aware they were being used as a pawn by Wei Yixian.
East City University had nearly 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students combined. Finding one person among them was like searching for a needle in a haystack.
But Li Xiao’s girlfriend, Zhu Yuanying, was a junior in the School of Journalism and Communication at East City University. Having hosted many events, she had connections in every department.
With her help, they quickly located the person.
Shang Shidai rushed to East City University and, after meeting up with Li Xiao and Zhu Yuanying, entered the campus under the guise of tourists.
They found the Treasure Pavilion, only to be stopped by the duty administrator at the entrance of the Go Room.
“What’s your business here?”
Zhu Yuanying quickly replied, “We’re looking for someone Shang Shiyu, the one who plays Go here.”
Shang Shidai had already begun scanning the Go Room, searching for anyone who might resemble Shang Shiyu.
Her aggressive demeanor didn’t exactly scream “friendly,” so the administrator grew wary. “She’s in class right now. If you know her, you can contact her directly.”
“Can we go in and play Go, then?”
That sounded even more suspicious. The administrator’s expression turned stern. “Please show your campus ID or student card.”
Only Zhu Yuanying could produce one.
“We’re visitors.”
The administrator said, “Our Go Room isn’t open to visitors, it disrupts our students. If you’d like to enter, you can contact the university’s publicity office. The school occasionally organizes guided campus tours.”
Mindful of the Shang family’s reputation, Shang Shidai couldn’t make a scene here and had no choice but to leave the Treasure Pavilion.
Li Xiao asked Shang Shidai, “Why didn’t you just say you’re from the Shang family? This Treasure Pavilion was donated by your family. What right do they have to keep you out?”
Shang Shidai waved her hand dismissively she clearly hadn’t even considered doing that.
Zhu Yuanying said, “Inside the Go Room, there’s a professional Go Classroom. It’s usually only used for specialized courses or professional guidance for ranked players. If she’s not in the outer Go Room, she’s probably in there.”
But what Shang Shidai was really wondering was, why did Wei Yixian’s Caged Canary also like Go?
And why was she playing in the Treasure Pavilion, donated by the Shang family?
The more Shang Shidai thought about it, the more convinced she became that Wei Yixian had deliberately chosen this place to find her Caged Canary, just to spite the Shang family.
Unable to hold back, she muttered under her breath, “Is Wei Yixian out of her damn mind?”
Li Xiao said, “You haven’t even seen the person yet, why are you so worked up? Besides, are you planning to tear into Wei Yixian’s Caged Canary?”
If Shang Shixing were here, she wouldn’t have such doubts. But Shang Shidai couldn’t be judged by the usual stereotypes of the Shang family.
Shang Shidai was the most rebellious and unrestrained of the Shang family’s third generation.
At home, she played the obedient daughter, but outside, she drank, partied, and flirted with girls, she did it all.
Because of this, Li Xiao seriously doubted whether Shang Shidai could resist the urge to physically confront the Caged Canary.
Shang Shidai rolled her eyes. “If I dared to lay a hand on her today, I’d be all over the entertainment headlines tomorrow. Forget my grandma and my mom, my eldest sister would be the first one to come after me.”
Li Xiao felt relieved. She certainly didn’t want to become famous along with them.
She said, “But I’m not at all surprised that Wei Yixian would do this. She’s always been ruthless. After you provoked her repeatedly and humiliated her, how could she not retaliate?”
“Bullshit,” Shang Shidai cursed. “Back then, she was the one who promised to remain absolutely faithful in marriage, never betray Shang Qiguan, and even vowed to be buried in our family cemetery as a member of the Shang family.”
Some topics weren’t suitable for third parties to hear. Li Xiao patted Zhu Yuanying’s bottom and said to her, “You’re a student here and can enter the Go Room. Find a way to get inside and wait for her to come out, then notify us.”
Zhu Yuanying gave her a coquettish glare before heading back into the Treasure Pavilion.
Only then did Li Xiao continue speaking to Shang Shidai, “Although she made those promises voluntarily back then, outsiders don’t know that. They all think she was forced by your Shang family!
And who knows maybe she was pressured by the Wei family too. What she really wants is the Wei family’s power. For the sake of her interests, she wouldn’t dare resent the Weis, so she’d redirect all that hatred onto your family instead.
People like her once they gain power, they become more vicious than wolves.”
Li Xiao’s mouth felt dry from talking, so she pulled out a pack of women’s cigarettes.
She reached into her pocket but remembered her lighter had been confiscated during security checks. She ended up rolling the cigarette between her fingers.
“Let me tell you, more than half a month ago, Wei Yixian’s assistant Xie Mei.”
Shang Shidai looked at her in confusion. “You mean Xie Mei?”
“Yeah, whatever. Someone else called her that name, but I misheard it as ‘Xie Mei.'”
Shang Shidai: “Why are you telling me about her? I’m not interested in her affairs.”
Li Xiao said, “Just hear me out first. More than half a month ago, Xie Mei was frequently visiting cosmetic surgery clinics in the East District. She even went to my family’s hospitals.”
“What was she trying to do?”
“No idea. You know I’ve never been interested in the family business. But during that time, the atmosphere at home felt off. I had to subtly probe my mom to find out that my dad had some leverage held over him by Xie Mei, so he did something for her.”
Shang Shidai remarked, “The cosmetic surgery industry is murky. Unless you’re some untainted white lotus, getting caught with dirt is inevitable.”
Li Xiao didn’t mind her sarcasm and even carelessly agreed, “That’s why I’ve never been interested in making money off women.”
Suddenly, Shang Shidai tensed up, her gaze fixed on the Treasure Pavilion. “Is she coming out?”
–
“When I initiated the ko fight in this area, you actually had a chance to turn the tables by not responding to the ko and instead resolving the situation in your own corner first. But you were too fixated on the ko fight and missed the opportunity. By the time I took the ko, you had no ko material left.”
In the Go Classroom, Shang Shiqian pointed out the student’s mistakes after finishing a match.
The student, enlightened by her advice, felt both realization and regret.
Understanding this kind of frustration from narrowly missing victory, Shang Shiqian said, “First, record the game and review it.”
Having drunk too much juice, she went to the restroom.
As she stepped out, a girl suddenly blocked her path.
She had seen this girl not long ago Zhu Yuanying, if she remembered correctly.
“You!”
Zhu Yuanying didn’t bother with pleasantries. “Someone’s looking for you at the entrance.”
Just moments ago, while Shang Shiqian was in the restroom, she had called Li Xiao.
And in the brief time she had managed to detain Shang Shiqian, two figures appeared at the entrance of the Treasure Pavilion.
One was around twenty-five years old, wearing sunglasses with a wolf-cut mullet hairstyle, their hair streaked with red, blue, and white.
The other was a girl of similar age, sporting voluminous curls, a cropped shirt that exposed her midriff, and a pair of cargo pants.
The moment Shang Shiqian saw the latter, her pupils contracted slightly.
Though the face had lost some of its youthful innocence from eight years ago, replaced by the maturity of someone who had been through life’s trials, she recognized her instantly.
This was her younger sister, Shang Shidai.
As Shang Shidai approached, Shang Shiqian’s heartbeat quickened, her breath betraying her tension and anticipation.
Until Shang Shidai stood aggressively before her, chin raised, and demanded, “Are you Shang Shiyu?”
Shang Shiqian suddenly remembered she was still wearing a face mask.
Hesitating for a moment, she nodded. “Yes, I am.”
Shang Shidai cut straight to the chase. “Are you Wei Yixian’s girlfriend?”
Shang Shiqian froze.
Wei Yixian’s girlfriend?
She asked her system: [Has Wei Yixian publicly announced any girlfriend recently?]
The system replied automatically: [No. I assume the host is inquiring about the ‘Caged Canary’?]
Though this energy-saving mode made the system seem rather dim-witted, it reminded Shang Shiqian that Wei Yixian’s recent scandals only involved “keeping a Caged Canary” and “a secret yacht rendezvous with her first love.”
Her sister knew Wei Yixian’s first love, she wouldn’t mistake her for that person. So, her sister was here because of the “Caged Canary” rumor?!
Shang Shiqian’s silence made the atmosphere grow heavier.
Shang Shidai became increasingly convinced she had found the right person. “Are you admitting it?”
Shang Shiqian snapped out of her thoughts. “I’m not her girlfriend.”
I’m her ex-wife.
Shang Shidai scoffed. “Right, someone like Wei Yixian would never give you any real status!”
Shang Shiqian frowned.
Since when had Shidai become so bitter and caustic?
She was deeply worried about her sister, this hostile attitude and cutting words, it was the textbook template of a villainess!
Just then, a cold voice echoed down the hallway. “What kind of person is Wei Yixian?”
Everyone turned to see Wei Yixian standing a few meters away, her dark, piercing gaze fixed on them.
She wore a loose black V-neck shirt paired with beige high-waisted straight-leg pants, perfectly in line with her usual style, though with a touch of holiday ease and relaxation.
But the aura she exuded showed no trace of leisure.
Zhu Yuanying had no intention of offending Wei Yixian. She shot Li Xiao a meaningful glance.
Though Li Xiao had no qualms about badmouthing Wei Yixian in front of Shang Shidai, that didn’t mean she was eager for a direct confrontation.
So she said to Shang Shidai, “I just got a text from traffic police about illegal parking. I’ll go move the car.”
“Go ahead.” Shang Shidai knew it was just an excuse but didn’t call her out.
Li Xiao had already gone above and beyond to help her she couldn’t drag her into this mess.
Li Xiao and Zhu Yuanying made a swift exit.
Wei Yixian paid no attention to these irrelevant bystanders. She strode toward Shang Shiqian, stepping between them.
Shang Shidai said, “You’re married, yet you’re still entangled with your first love. You keep a Caged Canary, then meet alone with your first love on a yacht. What kind of person do you think you are?”
[Ah!] Shang Shiqian couldn’t help gossiping with her system: [So after we got married, Wei Yixian was still involved with her first love, her white moonlight?]
Wei Yixian: …
Do you have any awareness of being one of the parties involved?
To prevent further misunderstandings and to clarify the truth for Shang Shiqian, who had always believed she would rekindle her old flame with Yin Zaishui, Wei Yixian spoke up:
“I need to correct two points. First, after marriage, I was not entangled with Yin Zaishui. When we broke up, everything was made clear, there are no lingering emotional ties. Second, Yin Zaishui and I met on the yacht to discuss business. There was no hint of rekindling any old feelings.”
Shang Shiqian peeked out from behind Wei Yixian and said to her younger sister, “See? You misunderstood her.”
Shang Shidai hadn’t been particularly angry before, but seeing this naive Caged Canary so easily trusting Wei Yixian’s words instantly infuriated her:
“You just believe whatever she says? She meets Yin Zaishui abroad every year, why doesn’t she mention that?”
Shang Shiqian immediately switched sides to support her sister: “What do you have to say about that?”
Wei Yixian laughed in exasperation but patiently explained, “I went abroad for financial forums and summits. Running into her was coincidental.”
Shang Shiqian chimed in, “She was just attending conferences abroad, no need to be paranoid.”
Shang Shidai: …
Wei Yixian: …
Feels like you’re just stirring the pot.
Great mediation. Please don’t mediate again.
Unable to find more evidence of Wei Yixian’s lingering ties with Yin Zaishui, Shang Shidai redirected her anger back at Shang Shiqian:
“She openly treats you as a Caged Canary, not even a proper girlfriend. Why would you stay with someone like that?”
Shang Shiqian was about to say she wasn’t actually with Wei Yixian.
But Wei Yixian cut in first: “That doesn’t give you the right to harass her.”
Shang Shidai’s eyes reddened with fury. “Wei Yixian, you disgust me. I regret it so much why didn’t I stop Shang Qiguan when you proposed? I regret even more that I impulsively pushed Shang Qiguan into that blind date with you. It’s all my fault.”
She clenched her teeth, eyes brimming with bitter, regretful tears.
Shang Shiqian instinctively moved to comfort her but bumped into Wei Yixian instead.
Wei Yixian pressed her lips together, radiating a dark, oppressive aura.
Shang Shiqian silently watched them, and suddenly, the fog in her mind began to clear.
She understood now.
All these years, her younger sister had been living in regret and self-blame.
Shang Shidai believed she was the one responsible for pushing her into this marriage with Wei Yixian.
–
Nine years ago.
Shang Shiqian had just finished solving life-and-death Go problems and stepped out of the study.
Shang Shidai, who had been playing a game on her phone, heard the noise and abandoned her team fight to rush over:
“Shang Qiguan, I heard the Wei family wants Wei Yixian to marry you?”
Shang Shiqian blinked. “Huh?” Then she ruffled her sister’s hair. “What kind of weird nickname is ‘Shang Qiguan’?”
“Hmph, your brain and stomach are full of Go stones, what else would you be but a Go Stone Jar?”
“Still, you shouldn’t call me that with my surname. It’s rude.”
“You don’t actually know the Wei family wants to arrange a marriage with you, do you?” Shang Shidai brushed her hand away, looking at her with puzzled, round black almond eyes.
Shang Shiqian thought back and vaguely recalled her mother mentioning something like that while she was playing Go.
“I know.”
Shang Shidai let out a “ha,” sounding a bit gleeful.
“An arranged marriage is good! If you don’t marry, someone like you a Go Stone Jar, won’t find a partner in the future!”
Shang Shiqian said, “What if the Wei family has their eye on you instead?”
Shang Shidai puffed up proudly. “Impossible! I’m not even an adult yet!”
“Oh, right. On my birthday, I’m throwing a party. All my classmates said they want to meet my world champion sister, so you have to come.”
Shang Shiqian was about to agree when she suddenly remembered she had a match scheduled for Shang Shidai’s birthday.
She said, “I have a match that day, but I’ll try to finish early and come back to celebrate with you.”
Shang Shidai’s party was in the daytime, but by the time Shang Shiqian returned, it would already be evening.
Angrily, she snapped, “Matches, matches all you care about are Go matches! Even Grandpa isn’t as obsessed as you. Are you planning to spend your whole life with Go?”
The next day.
Shang Shidai blocked Shang Shiqian’s path, her eyes gleaming mischievously. “Shang Qiguan, do you even remember what your fiancée looks like?”
Shang Shiqian had long given up on correcting that nickname.
She asked, “What fiancée?”
“Wei Yixian!”
Shang Shiqian frowned. “It’s already been decided?”
Shang Shidai rolled her eyes. “How would I know? Shouldn’t you, the person involved, be the one who knows?”
Shang Shiqian thought for a moment, then pinched her sister’s cheek. “You’re lying to me.”
Shang Shidai swatted her hand away. “Grandma and Mom said the decision is up to you whether you want to or not. If you don’t, they’ll decline. But honestly, Wei Yixian seems pretty great. She’s really beautiful.”
“No other good qualities?”
“How would I know? I’ve never spent time with her!”
Shang Shiqian didn’t have much of an impression of Wei Yixian either.
Though both the Shang and Wei families were prestigious elites in Dongcheng, due to their upbringing, they rarely interacted with the circles of second- or third-generation heirs.
Moreover, before they came of age, their elders never pushed them into the public eye.
As a result, even though the older generations of both families maintained connections, and the Wei family had business collaborations with Phoenix Group, the Shang family’s “new third generation” had little contact with the Wei family’s descendants.
Even Shang Shixing, who had already started working, only gradually expanded her social circle to Dongcheng’s elite over the past four years.
Though Shang Shiqian was also an adult, she had devoted all her energy to Go in recent years, completely cutting herself off from high-society circles.
Ask her who visited their home recently, and she might not remember.
But ask her about the top 200 players in the Go rankings, and she could recite them flawlessly even their playing styles and match records by heart.
Still, Shang Shiqian was well aware that her lack of impression of Wei Yixian was one-sided.
If Grandma and her mother were willing to ask for her opinion, it meant they had interacted with Wei Yixian before.
In their eyes, Wei Yixian must have many merits.
So, when Shang Shidai urged her to meet Wei Yixian in person for a blind date, she didn’t refuse.
Shang Si: Huh? Aren’t we supposed to have an arranged marriage without meeting first?
General Wei: “Can you take the Go game out of your head and make a little room for other memories?”
