Once or twice was understandable, but by the fifth incorrect guess, Wen Lingyi finally realized something was off.
Was Fu Lianxi’s luck really that bad?
Fu Lianxi wasn’t a particularly heavy drinker. Before Jiang Mengyu arrived, she had mostly been chatting, nursing a single drink for twenty minutes without finishing it.
Now, after several glasses in quick succession, her face had flushed red, her expression stiff, though she stubbornly refused to show any sign of weakness.
She locked eyes with Jiang Mengyu for a few seconds. Though the latter’s gaze remained calm and unreadable, Fu Lianxi was almost certain Jiang Mengyu was doing this on purpose.
Was this revenge for her earlier attempts to provoke her?
Fu Lianxi glanced at Gu Lanqiu. She couldn’t believe Gu Lanqiu hadn’t noticed the trick, yet the other woman hadn’t intervened.
A pang of disappointment struck her. She took a deep breath, deciding to make one last guess. If she failed again, she wouldn’t humor Jiang Mengyu any longer.
“One.”
After a few clattering sounds, Jiang Mengyu lifted the cup, three ones.
Wen Lingyi exhaled in relief. “Finally, a correct guess.”
The round ended right then.
Fu Lianxi felt as if she had swallowed a fly, the sensation stuck in her throat, neither up nor down.
Jiang Mengyu pushed the dice cup forward. “Your turn.”
Since Fu Lianxi had drunk quite a bit, Wen Lingyi let her be the one to shake the dice.
Fu Lianxi clenched her jaw. “Fine.”
Jiang Mengyu leaned back into her seat.
On the surface, she and Gu Lanqiu appeared completely normal. But beneath the table, their hands had somehow found each other, fingers entwined.
When Jiang Mengyu had deliberately targeted Fu Lianxi earlier, Gu Lanqiu hadn’t remained entirely passive. Though she hadn’t spoken, she had subtly nudged Jiang Mengyu’s hand, silently urging her to stop.
Instead, Jiang Mengyu had seized her fingers in response.
Not only that, she had slid her own fingers between Gu Lanqiu’s, insistently interlacing them in a tight grip.
Her movements were firm and decisive, yet her expression remained utterly unchanged.
Gu Lanqiu struggled slightly but couldn’t break free, so she simply let her be.
At first, she genuinely thought Jiang Mengyu didn’t know how to play, but it turned out the woman had been pretending all along.
Judging by her demeanor, she was clearly an expert.
Gu Lanqiu remained silent, the cigarette in her hand nearly burned to the filter, yet she barely noticed, her gaze scarcely leaving Jiang Mengyu.
Gu Lanqiu liked it when Jiang Mengyu was obedient and docile. Whenever Jiang Mengyu looked at her, it was as if she was the only person in her world. That sense of wholehearted dependence gave Gu Lanqiu a long-lost satisfaction.
But there was no denying that the Jiang Mengyu before her now was also captivating, a side of her Gu Lanqiu had never seen before.
Perhaps she still didn’t know Jiang Mengyu well enough.
Gu Lanqiu stubbed out the cigarette in the ashtray, picked up her glass, and took a sip to wet her throat. Just as she was about to set it down, Fu Lianxi spoke up, “Miss Jiang, you guessed wrong.”
Finally, it was Jiang Mengyu’s turn to drink as a penalty.
Logically, Fu Lianxi should have been pleased, but her expression betrayed little joy.
If Jiang Mengyu could control the dice, how could she possibly guess wrong?
Gu Lanqiu watched as Jiang Mengyu reached for the glass in front of her. She knew Jiang Mengyu was doing it on purpose, but in that moment, her heart softened.
Gu Lanqiu intercepted Jiang Mengyu’s hand.
“I’ll drink for her.”
Jiang Mengyu was injured she shouldn’t be drinking at all.
Only then did Jiang Mengyu turn to look at Gu Lanqiu. There was no surprise in her eyes, as if she had expected this all along.
Seeing this, a thought suddenly flashed through Gu Lanqiu’s mind: if she hadn’t stepped in to take the drink, what would Jiang Mengyu have done?
Would she have really drunk it herself?
Lost in thought, Gu Lanqiu picked up the glass meant for Jiang Mengyu and downed it in one go.
Jiang Mengyu, meanwhile, settled back into her seat, idly toying with Gu Lanqiu’s fingers before lifting her gaze to give Fu Lianxi a slow, enigmatic look.
Though her expression remained unchanged, Fu Lianxi seemed to detect a hint of provocation in her eyes.
She knows!
She did it on purpose.
Fu Lianxi’s breathing quickened slightly.
Gu Lanqiu glanced sideways at Jiang Mengyu beside her, her gaze drifting from those deep, dark eyes down to her lips. The hand resting on her thigh grew increasingly bold, and Gu Lanqiu found herself distracted, no longer in the mood to continue playing.
She clasped Jiang Mengyu’s hand to stop her mischief, then said to the other two, “It’s getting late. We have work tomorrow.”
Wen Lingyi quickly nodded in agreement.
Though she was dying to gossip, the tension at the table was palpable, Wen Lingyi could practically smell the gunpowder in the air.
One was their longtime friend, the other Gu Lanqiu’s new flame. If things escalated, she wouldn’t know whose side to take.
Privately, though, Wen Lingyi felt Fu Lianxi was more at fault.
Why was she targeting Jiang Mengyu out of the blue?
Since Gu Lanqiu had suggested ending the game, Wen Lingyi had no objections, and Fu Lianxi naturally couldn’t refuse either.
“Alright, let’s call it a night,” Fu Lianxi said softly, exhaling. Just as she was about to add something, her peripheral vision caught Jiang Mengyu abruptly standing up.
Their intertwined hands, no longer hidden by the table, were now blatantly exposed to the other two.
Fu Lianxi froze, her eyes locked on their interlaced fingers, unable to look away for a long moment.
Though she had already suspected it in her heart, seeing it with her own eyes still left Fu Lianxi struggling to accept it.
Wen Lingyi was also taken aback. She glanced at Gu Lanqiu, then at Fu Lianxi.
Was Lanqiu no longer planning to hide this from Lianxi?
Gu Lanqiu truly hadn’t intended to conceal anything.
The moment Jiang Mengyu stood up, Gu Lanqiu had guessed her intentions. She could have easily shaken off Jiang Mengyu’s hand after all, the grip wasn’t tight.
But after a brief pause, Gu Lanqiu chose to remain silent.
Regardless of whether her suspicions were true or not, she had no intention of letting things continue unchecked. Something that shouldn’t exist should be nipped in the bud while it still could.
No one spoke.
Gu Lanqiu rose to her feet, guided by Jiang Mengyu’s pull. “Let’s go.”
She and Jiang Mengyu walked ahead, Fu Lianxi following closely behind, while Wen Lingyi trailed at the very back.
Gradually, Fu Lianxi and Wen Lingyi ended up walking side by side, falling several steps behind.
The bar was noisy, and as long as they kept their voices low, the two in front might not hear them. Wen Lingyi lowered her voice and asked, “What’s going on with you today?”
Fu Lianxi knew she had been too obvious, but she couldn’t help it.
Hearing this, she pressed her lips together and whispered, “Did you already know?”
“The ‘little sister’ you mentioned before, was it her?”
Wen Lingyi rubbed the tip of her nose. “I didn’t know much earlier than you.”
Fu Lianxi suppressed her emotions. “Lingyi, Lanqiu might be lovestruck, but have you lost your mind too?”
“Do you have any idea how much damage this could do to Lanqiu’s reputation if word gets out?”
Wen Lingyi knew, of course. She shrugged. “I’ve already said my piece, but Lanqiu won’t listen. What else can I do?”
Fu Lianxi felt even worse hearing this. Did Gu Lanqiu really like Jiang Mengyu that much?
Enough to throw caution to the wind?
“Can you be sure Jiang Mengyu genuinely likes Lanqiu?”
She had been dating Xu Zeyan before, broke up without a second thought, and then immediately latched onto Lanqiu.
Fu Lianxi didn’t want to use harsher words to describe Jiang Mengyu, but that was exactly what she thought.
Wen Lingyi herself only had a vague understanding of the truth behind this matter. But given Gu Lanqiu’s intelligence, she probably wouldn’t be easily deceived.
Besides…
Wen Lingyi cautioned, “Just stay out of it.”
“Lanqiu can’t do without Miss Jiang for now.”
Gu Lanqiu could only sleep well when she smelled Jiang Mengyu’s scent. Without her, she’d be back to sleepless nights.
But Fu Lianxi didn’t know this. She missed the implication in Wen Lingyi’s words and instead assumed Gu Lanqiu had been completely charmed by Jiang Mengyu.
Lanqiu must have been tricked.
Watching the two figures walking hand in hand ahead, Fu Lianxi dug her nails deeply into her palm.
Yet the atmosphere between Gu Lanqiu and Jiang Mengyu wasn’t as warm as the others imagined.
Jiang Mengyu remained silent, and Gu Lanqiu had no intention of speaking either.
No matter what Jiang Mengyu’s reasons were, the fact remained that she had deceived her tonight.
Besides, Gu Lanqiu didn’t feel she had done anything wrong. She had been completely unaware of Fu Lianxi’s feelings.
Even after guessing later, she had never given Fu Lianxi any response.
Even when Jiang Mengyu deliberately targeted Fu Lianxi, she chose to turn a blind eye.
What reason did Jiang Mengyu have to lash out at her?
Sensing the oppressive atmosphere from the person beside her, Gu Lanqiu frowned. What more did Jiang Mengyu want from her?
She couldn’t control whether others liked her or not.
Moreover, she had already been cold enough toward her suitors. Surely she couldn’t cut off all her friends just because she was with Jiang Mengyu now?
She hadn’t even minded Xu Zeyan’s presence.
After all, Jiang Mengyu had seriously dated Xu Zeyan before.
And then there was that sister of hers, whose attitude toward her seemed somewhat ambiguous.
Not to mention the person still lingering in Jiang Mengyu’s heart.
Gu Lanqiu thought that if anyone had the right to be angry, it should be her.
Their clasped hands felt slightly sticky and warm. Taking the opportunity, Gu Lanqiu pulled her hand free and turned to meet Jiang Mengyu’s gaze, her expression indifferent.
“I’m going to the restroom.”
Jiang Mengyu knew it was just an excuse. Standing in the shadows, half her face obscured in darkness, the emotions in her eyes were unreadable.
Gu Lanqiu walked away, feeling a sticky, uncomfortable gaze fixed on her back, prickling like needles.
But she didn’t turn around.
Wen Lingyi also headed to the restroom.
The hallway was suddenly left with only Jiang Mengyu and Fu Lianxi.
Fu Lianxi stared straight at Jiang Mengyu.
“Miss Jiang, let’s talk.”
