Jiang Mengyu Deceived Her.
Wen Lingyi’s heart skipped a beat, and she instinctively turned to observe Gu Lanqiu’s reaction.
Jiang Mengyu also lowered her head again, silent, her gaze fixed wordlessly on Gu Lanqiu.
The body beneath her palm tensed noticeably for a moment, and Gu Lanqiu’s expression darkened slightly.
Though this was a fact all three of them were well aware of, hearing Fu Lianxi mention Jiang Mengyu and Xu Zeyan in the same breath still unsettled Gu Lanqiu.
Fu Lianxi studied their reactions. “What’s wrong? Did I mistake her for someone else?”
She asked whether she had mistaken the person, not whether she had said something wrong.
After speaking, Fu Lianxi’s expression remained calm, but her inner thoughts betrayed her completely.
[I could never mistake someone by Lanqiu’s side!]
[She is Jiang Mengyu.]
Was she doing this on purpose?
Gu Lanqiu crossed her legs and leaned back on the sofa, brows furrowed, suspicion growing in her eyes.
Fu Lianxi hadn’t seen her in years, why would she be so familiar with the people around her?
Just as Gu Lanqiu was lost in thought, she suddenly heard Jiang Mengyu speak coolly above her, “Why aren’t you saying anything?”
Her tone was icy, laced with a hint of mockery, and the hand resting on Gu Lanqiu shifted slightly, fingers pressing lightly into her shoulder.
Gu Lanqiu knew Jiang Mengyu well enough to recognize her displeasure.
From the moment she appeared, Jiang Mengyu had been radiating coldness.
Her hostility seemed directed at Fu Lianxi.
Gu Lanqiu recalled that Jiang Mengyu had never met Fu Lianxi before. Had something happened in their past lives that made Jiang Mengyu dislike Fu Lianxi so much?
No wonder her reaction had been so strange.
After hearing that Gu Lanqiu was having dinner with a college classmate, she hadn’t obediently returned to Beiyuan but had instead come straight to the bar.
Gu Lanqiu pieced it together. She didn’t push Jiang Mengyu’s hand away but turned to Fu Lianxi and said, “She’s not.”
Wen Lingyi quickly tried to ease the tension. “Lianxi, you’ve been busy with work lately, so you might not have checked Weibo.”
“Miss Jiang and Zeyan called off their engagement and parted amicably some time ago.”
Amicably?
Xu Zeyan was still lying in a hospital bed recovering from his injuries.
Jiang Mengyu didn’t comment on Wen Lingyi’s words, only staring silently at Fu Lianxi.
Fu Lianxi wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but she felt Jiang Mengyu harbored some strong resentment toward her.
“I see,” Fu Lianxi said with a smile. “The way you two are acting, I thought…”
She didn’t finish, but everyone could guess what she meant.
She thought the way Gu Lanqiu and Jiang Mengyu interacted was far too intimate.
Gu Lanqiu wasn’t the type to easily warm up to others, how could she be so close with her nephew’s ex-girlfriend?
Fu Lianxi didn’t want to dwell on it, but that hand resting possessively on Gu Lanqiu’s shoulder was hard to ignore, along with the way she had snatched the cigarette from her…
Jiang Mengyu ignored Fu Lianxi’s insinuations, lowering her lashes as her gaze remained locked on Gu Lanqiu.
Wen Lingyi, sensing the growing awkwardness, quickly stood up and suggested, “Mengyu, since you’re here, why not join us for a drink?”
Their booth was situated near the second-floor railing, with three-sided seating. Gu Lanqiu sat alone, while Wen Lingyi shared a sofa with Fu Lianxi. The remaining sofa was empty.
Yet Jiang Mengyu didn’t head for the vacant seat. Instead, she circled around the armrest of the sofa and stopped right in front of Gu Lanqiu.
Fu Lianxi’s expression darkened at the sight, and she was about to speak when she noticed Gu Lanqiu silently shifting aside to make space.
Jiang Mengyu promptly sat down, pressing close to Gu Lanqiu.
Fu Lianxi was instantly speechless.
Who knew what Gu Lanqiu was thinking? The spot she vacated happened to be the one closer to Wen Lingyi and Fu Lianxi. Now, Jiang Mengyu was sandwiched in the middle, with Fu Lianxi directly to her right.
The bar table wasn’t very high, and Fu Lianxi’s sharp eyes caught sight of Jiang Mengyu and Gu Lanqiu’s legs pressed tightly together beneath it.
She clenched her glass, scrutinizing Gu Lanqiu’s expression.
Gu Lanqiu’s face remained calm, as if nothing were amiss.
Fu Lianxi forced a smile. “Miss Jiang is so young.”
“Looking at you reminds me of our university days.”
She brought up amusing anecdotes from college, and though Jiang Mengyu couldn’t contribute, she showed no intention of trying. Instead, she leaned over to pick up a lighter and a cigarette case from the table, pulling out a fresh cigarette and handing it to Gu Lanqiu.
Gu Lanqiu: “…What’s this?”
“Returning it to you.”
She was referring to the cigarette she had taken from Gu Lanqiu earlier.
Just as Gu Lanqiu reached out to take it, Jiang Mengyu pulled her hand back slightly. Her gaze lingered on Gu Lanqiu’s lips, her emotions inscrutable.
Gu Lanqiu: “…”
Jiang Mengyu’s eyes were dark, the pupils deep and ink-black. When she wasn’t speaking, her brooding, icy aura became even more pronounced.
For a fleeting moment, Gu Lanqiu even felt that the way Jiang Mengyu looked at her was cold.
She was clearly doing this on purpose.
Out of the corner of her eye, Gu Lanqiu noticed Wen Lingyi and Fu Lianxi watching them. She curled her fingers slightly but ultimately didn’t refuse Jiang Mengyu’s gesture.
Leaning forward, she tilted her head slightly, her lashes half-lowered as her lips parted just enough to take the cigarette from Jiang Mengyu’s fingers.
Her soft lips brushed against Jiang Mengyu’s knuckles. They were so close that Jiang Mengyu could even see the faint, gauzy flush beneath Gu Lanqiu’s eyes.
A subtle fragrance emanated from her, distinct and untainted by the bar’s mingled odors.
It was the same posture Gu Lanqiu had taken when she kissed her.
Jiang Mengyu withdrew her hand.
From the moment Gu Lanqiu leaned in to when she sat back, only a few seconds had passed. Yet the impact of that scene lingered in Wen Lingyi and Fu Lianxi’s minds.
Wen Lingyi’s eyes widened. So this was how Gu Lanqiu and Jiang Mengyu usually interacted?
She could almost imagine just how ambiguous their private moments must be.
No wonder they were both wearing high-necked clothes, what lay beneath was probably too scandalous to show.
Tsk tsk.
Compared to Wen Lingyi’s simple curiosity, Fu Lianxi’s emotions were far more complicated.
She knew that such an action might mean nothing between girls, but this was Gu Lanqiu.
Besides, Fu Lianxi could tell Jiang Mengyu was the same kind of person as her.
The way she looked at Lan Qiu, and the possessive intimacy in her behavior, were not the kind that should exist between ordinary friends.
Did Gu Lanqiu know?
Fu Lianxi stared intently at Jiang Mengyu.
[Does Lan Qiu know Jiang Mengyu likes her?]
[What exactly is their relationship?]
If it was just suspicion before, after hearing these two inner thoughts, Gu Lanqiu’s certainty increased to seventy percent.
Did Fu Lianxi also like women?
Someone as straight as Wen Lingyi wouldn’t even think in that direction unless Gu Lanqiu confessed to her first.
But Fu Lianxi had guessed their relationship was more than platonic just from a few interactions between her and Jiang Mengyu…
She had only stared at Fu Lianxi for two seconds longer when her leg was lightly bumped. Gu Lanqiu snapped out of her thoughts and saw Jiang Mengyu flicking open a lighter.
The fingers lightly tapping the armrest of the sofa paused. Gu Lanqiu remained still, letting Jiang Mengyu lean in to light the cigarette between her lips.
In that flickering moment of flame, Gu Lanqiu clearly saw the thick, unyielding obsession and coldness in Jiang Mengyu’s eyes.
She was silent, like a predator lurking in the shadows.
Gu Lanqiu had no doubt that if Wen Lingyi and Fu Lianxi weren’t present, Jiang Mengyu might have already kissed her.
Gu Lanqiu’s eyelashes trembled slightly. Before things could spiral further out of control, she averted her gaze in time.
Seeing this, Fu Lianxi suddenly felt ridiculous.
She admitted she was doing it on purpose, deliberately steering the conversation toward their university days to provoke Jiang Mengyu.
Those memories belonged to the three of them and had nothing to do with Jiang Mengyu.
Fu Lianxi had done this openly, and there was nothing wrong with it, but it was undeniably spiteful.
Yet Gu Lanqiu didn’t engage. Her attention was entirely fixed on Jiang Mengyu, making Fu Lianxi feel like she was performing a one-woman show.
She had already guessed the nature of their relationship but refused to believe it. How could Gu Lanqiu possibly fall for her nephew’s ex-girlfriend?
Fu Lianxi had lied when she said she was here for business.
She had learned about Gu Lanqiu’s rumored affair from another close friend and came specifically to confirm it.
In truth, Wen Lingyi wasn’t wrong. Gu Lanqiu wasn’t exactly young anymore, and there was nothing unusual about her being in a relationship.
Fu Lianxi had long given up hope. She knew Gu Lanqiu didn’t like women, much less her, so all these years, she had buried her feelings deep inside, not daring to let Gu Lanqiu find out.
But upon suddenly learning that Gu Lanqiu had a lover, Fu Lianxi couldn’t help feeling unsettled.
After much internal struggle, she still booked a flight to City S.
Before coming, Fu Lianxi told herself she just wanted to see for herself.
If it was false, so be it. If it was true, she wanted to know, what kind of person could make Gu Lanqiu fall for them?
She never imagined it would be a woman, much less Jiang Mengyu.
Inevitably, resentment and jealousy surged in Fu Lianxi’s heart.
If she had been braver back then, would things have been different?
No.
Jiang Mengyu toyed with the lighter in her hand, her expression indifferent and calm.
Gu Lanqiu noticed Jiang Mengyu glancing at her. When she looked back, Jiang Mengyu had already averted her gaze.
She turned her profile toward Gu Lanqiu, her free hand moving slightly as if by accident.
Gu Lanqiu only felt a slight warmth on her leg. She glanced down but said nothing.
The conversation wasn’t particularly engaging.
Wen Lingyi then suggested, “How about we play a game?”
No one else had any objections.
Wen Lingyi’s impression of Jiang Mengyu was still that of an elegant and dignified young lady. Considering Jiang Mengyu was involved in the arts and usually surrounded by masterpieces, she assumed Jiang hadn’t played many games like this before, so she chose the simplest one.
“Let’s roll dice.”
“Guess the numbers.”
Wen Lingyi enthusiastically explained the rules to Jiang Mengyu and even handed her the dice cup. “Give it a try.”
Jiang Mengyu placed the cup upside down on the table, gave it a casual shake, and asked, “Who goes first?”
Wen Lingyi replied, “I’ll go first.”
At the beginning, it was almost impossible to guess wrong. But as the number of dice dwindled, it became harder to predict accurately.
Jiang Mengyu spoke little, and her movements were indifferent. She didn’t seem like an experienced player even Gu Lanqiu believed she hadn’t played before.
That was until the third round, when it was Fu Lianxi’s turn to guess, and things suddenly took a tense turn.
“Six,” Fu Lianxi guessed casually.
Jiang Mengyu lifted the cup. Only three dice remained: one, three, and four.
No six.
Fu Lianxi downed the drink in front of her. “Four.”
Another check still wrong.
