“What right do you have to question me?”
Jiang Mengyu’s gaze swept over lightly.
Fu Lianxi met those pitch-black eyes and, for some reason, felt a flicker of nervousness. But she suppressed the faint apprehension in her heart and pressed on, “You like Lanqiu.”
Her tone was unusually certain.
Jiang Mengyu ignored her.
Seeing this, Fu Lianxi couldn’t help but take two steps forward. “You should understand what I mean.”
The way Jiang Mengyu looked at Gu Lanqiu was clearly not the way one looked at an ordinary friend.
“Miss Jiang, I don’t know what reasoning you used to persuade Lanqiu, but you should understand, you two are not a match.”
Jiang Mengyu was Xu Zeyan’s ex-girlfriend, and Xu Zeyan was Gu Lanqiu’s nephew. By that logic, Jiang Mengyu could even call Gu Lanqiu “Auntie.”
A mix of indescribable anger and jealousy churned in Fu Lianxi’s chest. She stared intently into Jiang Mengyu’s eyes, hoping to catch even a trace of shame or panic.
But to her disappointment, Jiang Mengyu didn’t show the slightest ripple of emotion upon hearing these words.
She regarded Fu Lianxi’s face coolly, her voice light. “Did Lanqiu tell you that?”
Fu Lianxi faltered. “What?”
“And what identity are you using to question me?” Jiang Mengyu’s tone was casual, but her words made Fu Lianxi’s chest tighten.
“College roommate?”
Earlier at the table, Fu Lianxi had deliberately brought up amusing college anecdotes to exclude Jiang Mengyu. Now, Jiang Mengyu dismissed her effortlessly with the label “college roommate.”
And Fu Lianxi couldn’t even refute her.
It was true, she was merely Gu Lanqiu’s college roommate. But their relationship was far closer than that of ordinary classmates. She believed she had every right to help Gu Lanqiu resolve her troubles.
“Even if I were just an ordinary friend of Lanqiu’s, I couldn’t stand by and watch her go down the wrong path.”
Not to mention, Gu Lanqiu was someone she loved. How could Fu Lianxi not care?
“Lanqiu isn’t a fool.” Jiang Mengyu paused. “And I didn’t tie her up with a rope.”
She had simply used other methods to make Gu Lanqiu compromise.
Fu Lianxi clenched her fists. “But—”
Before she could finish, the woman before her suddenly narrowed her eyes. The momentary sense of danger forced Fu Lianxi to shut her mouth. Her heartbeat quickened, and her body tensed unconsciously.
Jiang Mengyu had no intention of laying a hand on Fu Lianxi. She merely lowered her voice, her tone icy and firm. “Fu Lianxi.”
She didn’t even address her as “Miss Fu” anymore, calling her by her full name instead. This complete abandonment of pretense made Fu Lianxi even more wary.
Jiang Mengyu looked at her coldly. “Stay away from Lanqiu.”
So this was Jiang Mengyu’s true nature arrogant, indifferent, her words dripping with condescending mockery.
Fu Lianxi was furious. Digging her nails into her palm, she shot back, “And what identity are you using to warn me?”
She threw Jiang Mengyu’s own words back at her.
“Lanqiu just said it herself, you’re not her lover.”
Fu Lianxi thought her words would sting Jiang Mengyu. She had even prepared her next retort.
But the person before her suddenly withdrew her sharp demeanor, furrowing her brows as she clutched her chest, her expression seemingly pained.
Fu Lianxi froze. What was wrong with Jiang Mengyu?
Before she could speak, a flurry of hurried footsteps sounded behind her. As Fu Lianxi turned her head, she saw Gu Lanqiu stride past her, heading straight toward Jiang Mengyu on the other side.
In the dim light, Gu Lanqiu faintly noticed Jiang Mengyu’s face looked unusually pale.
Something wasn’t right with her.
Spotting Jiang Mengyu’s hand pressed against her chest, Gu Lanqiu’s body reacted faster than her mind. Instinctively, she reached out to steady Jiang Mengyu.
Jiang Mengyu leaned into Gu Lanqiu’s embrace, her eyes slightly lowered, lips tightly pressed together in silence.
Gu Lanqiu could clearly feel the person in her arms trembling. Without even glancing at Fu Lianxi, her attention was entirely focused on Jiang Mengyu. “What’s wrong?”
Just moments ago, they had been in the midst of a cold war. But seeing Jiang Mengyu so weak and fragile now, Gu Lanqiu couldn’t help but ask.
Jiang Mengyu shook her head, breathing heavily, her lips parting slightly as she called out in a barely audible voice, “Lanqiu…”
“Is your chest hurting again?” Gu Lanqiu asked.
But Jiang Mengyu didn’t respond. Instead, she gripped Gu Lanqiu’s hand tightly, her fingers pressing so hard it almost hurt.
[Lanqiu, sister…]
[No…]
[Lanqiu wouldn’t abandon me…]
Wen Lingyi had also stepped out.
Seeing the scene before her, she was equally baffled. “What’s going on?”
Hearing Jiang Mengyu’s inner thoughts, Gu Lanqiu’s brows suddenly knitted together. She turned to Fu Lianxi, her gaze icy. “What did you say to her?”
Fu Lianxi stood frozen in place. “I didn’t say much.”
“I just asked her what her relationship with you was.”
Fu Lianxi had always believed that, given her history with Gu Lanqiu, even if Gu Lanqiu found out what she’d said to Jiang Mengyu, she wouldn’t be angry with her. That was why she’d dared to confront Jiang Mengyu directly, questioning her without hesitation.
But now, seeing the doubt and impatience in Gu Lanqiu’s eyes, Fu Lianxi suddenly wasn’t so sure.
In Lanqiu’s heart, did all these years of friendship mean nothing compared to Jiang Mengyu?
[Does Lanqiu really like her that much?]
[Why?]
[Why can’t that person be?]
Her inner thoughts confirmed Gu Lanqiu’s suspicions.
Unaware that she’d already been exposed, Fu Lianxi stammered, “Lanqiu, I—”
“If you wanted to know, you could have just asked me directly.” Gu Lanqiu didn’t even let her finish.
The look she gave Fu Lianxi was colder and more distant than ever before. “Yu Yu can’t handle stress. I hope you won’t say such things to her again.”
Of course.
She also wouldn’t give Fu Lianxi another chance to meet Jiang Mengyu alone.
It took Fu Lianxi a long moment to realize that the “Yu Yu” Gu Lanqiu referred to was Jiang Mengyu.
She can’t handle stress?!
The memory of how coldly Jiang Mengyu had threatened her earlier made Fu Lianxi’s blood boil. At that moment, she truly wanted to shake some sense into Gu Lanqiu. Did she really not know what kind of person Jiang Mengyu was?
She hadn’t even laid a finger on Jiang Mengyu.
Yet Jiang Mengyu had clutched her chest, looking as though she was in unbearable pain.
Fu Lianxi’s eyes reddened involuntarily. “Lanqiu, I didn’t bully her.”
She had only spoken a few words, not even touching the hem of Jiang Mengyu’s clothes.
Gu Lanqiu, of course, knew that Fu Lianxi hadn’t laid a hand on Jiang Mengyu.
No one understood Jiang Mengyu’s combat prowess better than she did. If the two had really fought, Fu Lianxi would have been the only one hurt.
“Let’s leave it at that.” Gu Lanqiu had no intention of explaining further.
Her attitude had already made her stance clear enough, she believed Fu Lianxi understood her meaning.
Whatever their relationship had been before, it would remain unchanged. Whoever she dated had nothing to do with Fu Lianxi, nor did she need Fu Lianxi to worry on her behalf.
“I’ll take Yu Yu and go first.”
