- Chapter 62.2 - The Villainess in a Romance Novel (15)
After all, Jiang Mengyu had always been the submissive one in their relationship.
Jiang Mengyu didn’t return to Beiyuan as Gu Lanqiu had suggested.
The car stopped in front of the restaurant. Old Liu went in to ask, only to return with a puzzled expression after learning that Gu Lanqiu had already left.
“Miss Gu, she…”
Hadn’t she been the one who told him to pick Jiang Mengyu up?
Why had she left first?
He didn’t know about the messages Gu Lanqiu had sent Jiang Mengyu.
Just as Old Liu was about to call Gu Lanqiu to ask, Jiang Mengyu stopped him.
“No need.”
Her face was shadowed, her voice eerily soft.
“I know where she is.”
Old Liu shivered involuntarily at her words.
Why did Jiang Mengyu’s tone suddenly feel so unsettling?
The car started again, quickly pulling away from the curb.
Because of Jiang Mengyu’s insistence, Old Liu didn’t send any further messages to Gu Lanqiu.
So, naturally, Gu Lanqiu had no idea that fifteen minutes after she arrived at the bar, Jiang Mengyu did too.
A black Cayenne parked silently outside the bar, motionless, like a beast lying in wait.
Jiang Mengyu sat inside, gazing through the half-lowered window at the glowing sign in the distance.
By now, Gu Lanqiu had probably forgotten all about her.
With friends reuniting after years apart, there was naturally a lot to catch up on. Wen Lingyi, never one to stay quiet, kept bombarding Fu Lianxi with questions.
In contrast, Gu Lanqiu spoke very little, only occasionally chiming in.
Though Fu Lianxi was engaged in conversation with Wen Lingyi, her eyes kept drifting toward Gu Lanqiu.
Noticing her gaze, Wen Lingyi followed it and let out a teasing chuckle.
“As expected of you, President Gu.”
She nudged Gu Lanqiu playfully.
“Last night, I was worried you and your little sister might end up fighting.”
Because Fu Lianxi was present, Wen Lingyi deliberately avoided mentioning Jiang Mengyu’s name after all, the nature of Gu Lanqiu and Jiang Mengyu’s relationship was still somewhat awkward.
Little sister?
Fu Lianxi’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“Lingyi, since when did you have a younger sister?”
Wen Lingyi clicked her tongue twice, “That’s not my sister.”
She pursed her lips, “She’s our President Gu’s.”
At that moment, Gu Lanqiu also happened to think of Jiang Mengyu. Last night, right here, Jiang Mengyu had seen her drinking with Wen Lingyi, turned around in a huff, and stormed off.
Later, she even bit her.
Thinking of this, Gu Lanqiu felt a faint ache in her neck again.
The nostalgia in her eyes was too obvious clearly, she was reminiscing about something.
Fu Lianxi tightened her grip on the wine glass in her hand. Her intuition told her that this so-called “sister” might have a very unusual relationship with Gu Lanqiu.
But remembering that Gu Lanqiu didn’t like women, Fu Lianxi suppressed the suspicion in her heart.
She couldn’t quite articulate what she was feeling perhaps a mix of relief and disappointment.
[I must be overthinking it.]
[Did Gu Lanqiu actually sleep with Jiang Mengyu?]
These two thoughts echoed simultaneously in Gu Lanqiu’s ears.
Gu Lanqiu glanced at the two women beside her but said nothing.
Wen Lingyi was dying to gossip, but considering Gu Lanqiu might not want Fu Lianxi to know about this, she forcibly tamped down her curiosity.
The atmosphere among the three grew momentarily awkward, until Fu Lianxi finally broke the silence.
“By the way, speaking of this,” Fu Lianxi forced a smile.
She joked, “Even in C City, I’ve heard the rumors.”
“People are saying Lanqiu has taken a young lover.”
Her tone was lighthearted, but the look she gave Gu Lanqiu was serious. The dim lighting in the bar, however, prevented Wen Lingyi from immediately noticing anything amiss.
Gu Lanqiu, on the other hand, studied Fu Lianxi for a moment longer.
Because she had heard Fu Lianxi’s inner thoughts.
[It must be fake!]
[It has to be fake!]
Did it even matter if it was true or false?
What did it have to do with Fu Lianxi anyway?
Gu Lanqiu’s gaze grew more probing.
In the past, she would never have given it a second thought.
After all, she and Fu Lianxi were both women, and they had been close friends for years.
But ever since Jiang Mengyu’s rebirth and her own newfound ability to read minds, Gu Lanqiu had come to believe nothing was impossible anymore.
Before her rebirth, Jiang Mengyu had been her nephew’s ex-girlfriend, and now look at the relationship they had developed.
Fu Lianxi noticed Gu Lanqiu’s gaze and her breath hitched slightly.
[Why is Lanqiu looking at me like that?]
Gu Lanqiu averted her eyes. She didn’t offer an explanation, but Wen Lingyi couldn’t help laughing after hearing Fu Lianxi’s words.
“The rumors have spread that far?”
Wen Lingyi winked at Gu Lanqiu, “What do you have to say for yourself, President Gu?”
What could she say?
Before, Gu Lanqiu could have confidently declared her relationship with Jiang Mengyu was purely innocent. But now, the marks Jiang Mengyu had left on her hadn’t even faded yet.
And just a few hours ago, they had been kissing.
To call Jiang Mengyu her young lover…
Well, it wasn’t exactly wrong.
Gu Lanqiu pressed her lips together and remained silent.
Fu Lianxi watched her reaction, and a sense of foreboding suddenly rose in her heart. “If it’s just baseless gossip, why not clarify it sooner?”
She managed a strained smile, “To stop people from making false claims.”
“Of course, it’s because President Gu has a guilty conscience,” Wen Lingyi’s gaze lingered on Gu Lanqiu’s neck.
Her words were clearly loaded with implication.
Guan Lanqiu never used to like wearing high-collared clothes, but today she was bundled up tightly.
That mark on her chin was it a hickey?
How intense.
Wen Lingyi mused silently to herself.
“What do you mean?” Fu Lianxi’s voice sounded strained. “So there really is someone?”
Her tone was off even Wen Lingyi could tell now.
“What’s wrong with you?”
It wasn’t a big deal if Guan Lanqiu had found herself a lover. She was already in her thirties and had never been in a relationship before. Wasn’t she allowed to taste the sweetness of love?
Wen Lingyi didn’t see anything particularly unusual about it.
The only special factor was Jiang Mengyu’s identity. But she had already advised against it, if Guan Lanqiu wouldn’t listen, what more could she do?
“It’s nothing,” Fu Lianxi suppressed her agitation.
“I’m just shocked.”
She couldn’t maintain her smile, yet she still forced a faint one.
“Lanqiu doesn’t seem like the type to keep a lover.”
Guan Lanqiu was lighting a cigarette when she glanced up at her. Casually setting the lighter aside, the flickering ember glowed faintly through the haze of smoke. “She’s not my lover.”
No sooner had the words left her lips than a hand suddenly reached from behind, plucking the cigarette from between Guan Lanqiu’s fingers.
Guan Lanqiu froze. The hand was slender and pale, nails neatly trimmed so familiar that she didn’t move an inch.
As the ember was drawn away, she felt something settle on her shoulder.
A shadow fell over her as someone rested a hand there, their tone indifferent. “So in President Guan’s heart, I don’t even qualify as a lover.”
Guan Lanqiu clenched her fingers. Tilting her head back, she met Jiang Mengyu’s striking, deep-set features.
“I told you to go home, didn’t I?”
She glanced at her watch, barely making out the time, 10:30 p.m.
Jiang Mengyu had lied to her.
“I’m already here.”
Jiang Mengyu looked down at her. “I said I’d take you home.”
She took a drag from the cigarette she’d snatched, entirely unfazed that Guan Lanqiu’s lips had touched it. Exhaling, the smoke curled delicately from her lips.
“So this is what you like.”
Jiang Mengyu loomed over her, her beautiful face expressionless beneath her chestnut hair. “Sister, aren’t you going to introduce me?”
This was the first time Guan Lanqiu had seen Jiang Mengyu like this.
Under the dim light, her fathomless dark eyes brimmed with danger, reminding Guan Lanqiu of a venomous snake poised to strike.
She exhaled slowly. “Give it back.”
How dare she smoke when she was still injured?
Jiang Mengyu leaned in closer, the cigarette making her words slightly muffled. “Want it back?”
“Then come take it yourself.”
What nonsense was she spouting now?
Guan Lanqiu closed her eyes briefly before snatching the cigarette from Jiang Mengyu’s mouth and stubbing it out in the ashtray. “Looks like Old Liu wants to be fired.”
“If you want to scold me, just say it outright.” Jiang Mengyu’s gaze shifted from Guan Lanqiu to Fu Lianxi. “I told him not to ask for your permission.”
“Let’s go home.”
With Jiang Mengyu present, Gu Lanqiu had no interest in drinking anymore. Her face tense, she tried to stand up but was pressed back into her seat by Jiang Mengyu’s hand on her shoulder.
“What’s the hurry?”
Jiang Mengyu’s attitude was uncharacteristically firm. She had never spoken to Gu Lanqiu like this before, and the coldness in her eyes was so intense it seemed almost tangible.
“Wen Jiejie, what do you think?”
Wen Lingyi shivered. “This…”
Jiang Mengyu wasn’t much older, so why did Wen Lingyi feel a chill run down her spine the moment their eyes met?
Compared to Wen Lingyi’s unease, Gu Lanqiu’s expression darkened the instant she heard Jiang Mengyu call Wen Lingyi “Jiejie.”
She had coaxed and cajoled just to hear Jiang Mengyu call her “Jiejie” once, yet Wen Lingyi had gotten it so effortlessly?
What right did she have?
And Jiang Mengyu—
Gu Lanqiu’s gaze turned icy. How could Jiang Mengyu casually give away a term of endearment that belonged solely to her?
Wen Lingyi, now caught under the scrutinizing gazes of both women, felt utterly miserable.
What had she even done wrong?
Why were they both staring at her?
The atmosphere among the three of them was tense and strange, their words cryptic and hard to decipher.
Fu Lianxi felt as though she had been excluded from their circle, unable to interject at all.
Her eyes remained fixed on Jiang Mengyu, darting between her face and the hand resting on Gu Lanqiu’s shoulder.
Fu Lianxi knew Gu Lanqiu well.
Gu Lanqiu disliked others getting close to her, she had an instinctive aversion to physical contact. Even long-time friends like herself and Wen Lingyi couldn’t casually touch her like this.
Yet now, she was silently allowing Jiang Mengyu’s proximity, even indulging her as she snatched her cigarette and boldly placed it between her lips.
Wasn’t that an indirect kiss?
Since when had Gu Lanqiu become so tolerant?
Or was it just this person in front of her?
Fu Lianxi’s breathing grew heavier. After a long pause, she finally spoke.
“I know you, Miss Jiang.”
Her tone was eerily calm, but her words made the other three freeze.
“You seem to be Zeyan’s fiancée.”
