Footsteps sounded behind her, growing closer. Jiang Mengyu pretended not to hear. Just as she reached the car door and was about to open it, her hand was suddenly pressed down.
It was Gu Lanqiu.
Perhaps because she had walked in a hurry, Gu Lanqiu’s already flushed face was even more intoxicated. She panted slightly, her gaze fixed unwaveringly on Jiang Mengyu.
Jiang Mengyu avoided her eyes. “Why didn’t you keep playing?”
Gu Lanqiu pressed her lips together. “Are you angry?”
Jiang Mengyu curled her fingers slightly, her voice soft. “I’m not.”
She refused to look at Gu Lanqiu, her gaze drifting somewhere else.
Seeing Jiang Mengyu’s unwillingness to speak, the inexplicable frustration in Gu Lanqiu’s heart flared up. “Why are you upset?”
“Because I didn’t answer your calls?”
“Or because I didn’t report to you?”
Jiang Mengyu pressed her lips together and remained silent.
Gu Lanqiu scoffed. “I’m not yours. I have no obligation to do these things.”
As she spoke, she suddenly gripped Jiang Mengyu’s chin, forcing her to look at her. “Look clearly.”
Gu Lanqiu reeked of alcohol. She stared into Jiang Mengyu’s eyes, enunciating each word deliberately. “I’m not her.”
“So don’t use your expectations of her to bind me.”
When Jiang Mengyu looked at her, could she really tell who she was seeing?
Gu Lanqiu was definitely drunk. If she were sober, she would never have spoken so bluntly.
Comparing herself to her past self wasn’t exactly something she could openly admit.
Jiang Mengyu reached up and grabbed Gu Lanqiu’s wrist. Gu Lanqiu loosened her grip at the pressure, and the two fell into a silent standoff, staring at each other without a word.
Neither of them noticed that someone else had quietly approached.
Zhou Xinying.
Were Jiang Mengyu and Gu Lanqiu fighting?
Zhou Xinying frowned, using the cars as cover to silently observe the two.
Jiang Mengyu took a deep breath. Her eyes were slightly red. “Lanqiu, I know exactly who I love.”
“There’s only one Gu Lanqiu in this world.”
“But you haven’t only met one Gu Lanqiu.” Gu Lanqiu’s gaze lingered on Jiang Mengyu’s hand. “Didn’t you confirm it yourself that night?”
“My legs are still fine.”
So, from the very beginning, everything was different. She wasn’t that cripple who had lost her legs, and she could never be the person in Jiang Mengyu’s heart.
“That’s not true.” Jiang Mengyu shook her head, her brows tightly furrowed, her breathing slightly ragged.
“You are my Lanqiu.”
Gu Lanqiu’s gaze was cold and heavy as she stared at Jiang Mengyu. “There’s a fundamental difference between me and her.”
“Jiang Mengyu, think carefully. Who do you want me or her?”
Jiang Mengyu seemed unable to comprehend Gu Lanqiu’s words. In her heart, Gu Lanqiu had always been the same person. Why did they have to be separated so distinctly?
“Lanqiu,” Jiang Mengyu’s voice was hoarse. “From beginning to end, it’s only ever been you. There’s never been anyone else.”
Gu Lanqiu felt a slight tremor in her heart. Suppressing the restlessness in her chest, she pressed again, “Think carefully before you answer.”
But Jiang Mengyu shook her head. Under Gu Lanqiu’s gaze, she suddenly reached out and pulled her into a tight embrace. “Lanqiu…”
“Lanqiu…”
Jiang Mengyu repeated her name softly by Gu Lanqiu’s ear.
Gu Lanqiu could feel Jiang Mengyu’s faint trembling. The arms around her were tight, as if afraid she might disappear at any moment.
Perhaps this question was indeed too cruel for Jiang Mengyu.
Gu Lanqiu closed her eyes briefly, forcing herself to stay composed. Just as she was about to speak again, a sharp pain suddenly flared at her neck.
Her eyes widened, and it took her several seconds to realize, Jiang Mengyu had bitten her.
This was already the second time.
After the bite, Jiang Mengyu’s lips trailed up Gu Lanqiu’s neck, kissing their way to the corner of her mouth.
Then, without warning, Gu Lanqiu grabbed Jiang Mengyu’s hair, the sharp tug forcing her to lift her head. Their eyes met, Jiang Mengyu’s expression still dazed.
“Lanqiu?”
Gu Lanqiu glared at her. “Biting me again?”
Jiang Mengyu’s arms remained wrapped around her as she mumbled, “I didn’t…”
[I really want to kiss her.]
[Lanqiu…]
Gu Lanqiu’s gaze dropped to Jiang Mengyu’s lips.
The sweet scent of jasmine lingered in the air. Already lightheaded from the alcohol, Gu Lanqiu felt her thoughts growing hazier.
She pressed Jiang Mengyu against the car door, her voice low. “You really want to kiss that badly?”
“Mhm,” Jiang Mengyu’s voice was laced with temptation. “Do you want to try?”
Try what?
Gu Lanqiu recalled the sensation of Jiang Mengyu’s lips against her earlobe, warm and soft.
Her eyes lingered on Jiang Mengyu’s mouth.
A restless, charged atmosphere enveloped them.
Before Jiang Mengyu could say another word, Gu Lanqiu suddenly leaned in. Her crimson lips met Jiang Mengyu’s with precision, the faint taste of alcohol mingling as she claimed Jiang Mengyu’s breath entirely.
Gu Lanqiu’s long hair cascaded loosely, her upturned phoenix eyes hazy with intoxication. She didn’t close them as they kissed, her hand on Jiang Mengyu’s shoulder tightening slightly unyielding, refusing to let her pull away.
Jiang Mengyu braced herself against the car door, her gaze lowered to Gu Lanqiu. She didn’t resist. Instead, she parted her lips slightly, inviting her in.
Gu Lanqiu was unpracticed, but she was quick to learn. Soon, her hand moved from Jiang Mengyu’s shoulder to cradle the back of her head, fingers threading through her hair with unexpected gentleness.
Jiang Mengyu’s lashes fluttered, her cheeks flushed like spring blossoms. Her lips were feverishly soft, and between their breaths, faint, barely audible gasps escaped.
Arms wrapped around Gu Lanqiu’s waist, Jiang Mengyu surrendered completely, letting herself be kissed deeply. The pallor of her face gave way to a delicate flush, intoxicatingly beautiful.
In a daze, Gu Lanqiu remembered how Jiang Mengyu had once bound her wrists with a red silk scarf, teasing that she had no interest in indulging her peculiar tastes.
But now, seeing Jiang Mengyu’s cheeks flushed like peach blossoms, Gu Lanqiu suddenly thought maybe it wasn’t so bad after all.
Jiang Mengyu was quite suited to being tied up.
The kiss continued.
Gu Lanqiu’s long lashes lowered, and she didn’t notice that the person pinned motionless against the car door, being kissed deeply, suddenly lifted her gaze at one point, her eyes locking onto a black SUV not far away.
Zhou Xinying stared wide-eyed, disbelief written all over her face. For a fleeting moment, she thought Jiang Mengyu had glanced at her.
Had she been discovered?
Zhou Xinying didn’t know.
All she knew was that her heart was pounding wildly, and beyond the shock, there was a sudden clarity.
So, this was the nature of their relationship?!
No wonder…
No wonder her father’s gaze had always been hesitant, he must have known too.
Zhou Xinying clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. She couldn’t tear her eyes away from the scene before her Jiang Mengyu’s flushed face, dazed eyes, and the way she was being forced into submission, utterly unable to resist, all of it burned into Zhou Xinying’s vision.
She took an involuntary step back, pressing a hand to her chest as her heartbeat roared like thunder in her ears.
So, Jiang Mengyu could also wear such a fragile expression.
Zhou Xinying’s mind was a chaotic whirlwind, countless thoughts crashing in at once. She bit her lip, barely restraining herself from making a sound.
She should leave, but her feet seemed rooted to the spot, and for some reason, she couldn’t look away.

Jiang Mengyu withdrew her gaze just as Gu Lanqiu lifted her eyes, their stares colliding.
Gu Lanqiu struggled to steady her breathing. She said nothing, and Jiang Mengyu remained silent too, leaving only the sound of their ragged breaths between them.
After a long pause, it was Jiang Mengyu who finally spoke. “Lanqiu, was this also an accident?”
She was referring to the kiss just now.
Gu Lanqiu sidestepped the question. “Are you sober now?”
The marks Jiang Mengyu had left in her frenzy still lingered on Gu Lanqiu’s neck, just like the hickey from last time, which had taken days to fade.
“Sorry,” Jiang Mengyu said, her apology devoid of sincerity.
“Has your apology ever worked even once?”
Jiang Mengyu fell silent.
Gu Lanqiu’s throat moved slightly. “Maybe I really should find a chain to tie you up with.”
Only then would Jiang Mengyu behave.
Jiang Mengyu studied Gu Lanqiu’s still-flushed face. “Lanqiu, whether you admit it or not, our relationship won’t change.”
“I can’t stop myself from getting close to you.”
She exhaled softly. “Lanqiu, I’ve really missed you.”
Gu Lanqiu’s lashes trembled. She wanted to ask Jiang Mengyu was this confession meant for her now, or for the version of her from their past life?
Before she could voice the question, the woman before her suddenly pressed her lips together and offered a faint smile. “Lanqiu, you always think I’m looking at you but seeing someone else.”
“It’s because I’ve been through so much with the you from our past life.”
Jiang Mengyu’s voice was quiet. “Maybe… you could try replacing my memories, so that whenever I think of Gu Lanqiu, all that comes to mind are the moments I’ve shared with you.”
“That way, I won’t think of anyone else anymore.”
Gu Lanqiu’s breath hitched. She understood Jiang Mengyu’s implication to create more memories between them. Yet, a thought struck Gu Lanqiu: Why couldn’t she make Jiang Mengyu forget the events of their past life and love only her in this one?
The lingering sensation of their lips touching still remained on Gu Lanqiu’s mouth. She was certain she didn’t dislike the idea of taking things further with Jiang Mengyu. If Jiang Mengyu’s memories were to consist solely of her, then she would belong to Gu Lanqiu completely, and no one else.
All she needed to do was ensure that, before Markel arrived in Country Z, Jiang Mengyu’s affection for her past self would shift entirely to the present version of her. That was enough.
Why bother dwelling on the past?
Things that shouldn’t exist, she just had to make them disappear.
Gu Lanqiu had already made up her mind.

“You make a good point,” Gu Lanqiu said slowly.
“So, do you want to try again?”
Jiang Mengyu: “Try what?”
Gu Lanqiu hooked a strand of Jiang Mengyu’s long hair around her finger, her gaze never leaving Jiang Mengyu’s eyes. “Try making me fall in love with you too.”
Jiang Mengyu grabbed Gu Lanqiu’s hand. “Lanqiu.”
“Is this what I think it means?”
