The faint gasps between entangled lips were barely audible.
Their booth was on the second floor, each table separated by wooden frames and potted plants, ensuring ample privacy, though the lighting was dimmer as a result.
Gu Lanqiu leaned back on the sofa, idly swirling the liquor in her glass with one hand. “It’s different.”
“What exactly is different?” Wen Lingyi didn’t understand what she meant.
Gu Lanqiu rubbed her temples. “Never mind.”
She was just momentarily unsettled. She’d be fine in a couple of days.
This was something Gu Lanqiu understood and Jiang Mengyu understood it too.
She knew Gu Lanqiu was just temporarily unsettled by her words. Once Gu Lanqiu had time to process it, she’d realize there was no reason to be upset about this.
So Jiang Mengyu wouldn’t give her that time.
The more agitated a person was, the more likely they were to act impulsively and then sink deeper into it.
She made the second call.
Wen Lingyi saw Gu Lanqiu’s phone vibrating again, but the woman remained seated quietly, seemingly still unwilling to answer. She leaned over and snatched the phone herself. “At least say something to her.”
Even just a quick “I’m busy” would do.
The call connected, but Gu Lanqiu stayed silent. Wen Lingyi had no choice but to answer for her. “Hello, Mengyu little sister, it’s me.”
The term of address left both ends of the line silent for a moment.
Gu Lanqiu glanced sideways at Wen Lingyi, her brow furrowing almost imperceptibly. Who was she calling “little sister”?
Wen Lingyi, however, was used to it. She had always been overly familiar with people and didn’t think anything of it.
“Gu Lanqiu’s with me, don’t worry.”
As she spoke, Wen Lingyi subtly covered the receiver, afraid Jiang Mengyu might hear the noisy bar sounds and assume Gu Lanqiu was out partying.
Jiang Mengyu had already heard, though. She said softly, “Lanqiu hasn’t replied to my messages. I was worried.”
Wen Lingyi had the call on speaker, so Gu Lanqiu heard every word clearly.
No reply?
Gu Lanqiu’s lips twitched. Had Jiang Mengyu even sent any messages?
Watching Gu Lanqiu’s expression, Wen Lingyi guessed there was something odd going on. She laughed it off. “She’s probably just been too busy. Lanqiu even worked overtime today.”
Jiang Mengyu hummed in acknowledgment. “I see.”
“Sorry to bother you, Miss Wen. Enjoy yourselves.”
Wen Lingyi coughed. “We’re not!” enjoying ourselves.
Before she could finish, the call ended. Wen Lingyi rubbed the tip of her nose, thinking Jiang Mengyu had quite the personality.
She handed the phone back to Gu Lanqiu. “Are you going back tonight?”
Gu Lanqiu didn’t know.
Her mind was weighed down with thoughts. If she slept alone again, she’d likely spend another sleepless night. But the idea of going back to face Jiang Mengyu also made her feel strangely uncomfortable.
Wen Lingyi, seeing her silence, didn’t know what else to say either. “Alright, since we’re already out, let’s not overthink it.”
She picked up the bottle and refilled Gu Lanqiu’s glass. “Cheers!”
Gu Lanqiu silently downed the drink in one go, the sharp burn spreading across her tongue. She exhaled slowly, sweeping the loose strands of hair behind her ear. “Again.”
Wen Lingyi smiled, “That’s more like it.”
She beckoned to the waiter waiting nearby, “Bring two more bottles over.”
“Certainly, just a moment.”
Jiang Mengyu changed her clothes and grabbed a set of car keys from Gu Lanqiu’s shelf. As she was putting on her shoes to head out, Aunt Zhang emerged from her room.
“Miss Jiang, where are you…”
Jiang Mengyu was fastening her cuffs and didn’t even look up. “I have something to take care of.”
“But you…”
Aunt Zhang was worried, remembering her injuries.
Jiang Mengyu’s expression remained indifferent. “I’m going to see Lanqiu.”
Hearing this, Aunt Zhang immediately relaxed, assuming Jiang Mengyu had already arranged to meet Gu Lanqiu. “Then be careful on the road.”
Jiang Mengyu had grabbed the keys at random and only realized in the garage that it was a sports car. She bent down into the driver’s seat, and as the engine roared to life, the convertible top slowly retracted. The night breeze whipped her long hair wildly, obscuring her striking features.
The scene instantly reminded System 031 of when its host had first arrived in this world, she had driven off to find Gu Lanqiu in much the same way.
[Host,] 031 grew wary, [what are you planning now?]
It wasn’t that 031 didn’t trust Jiang Mengyu, but she had done too many things beyond its expectations. Now, just the sight of her made 031 nervous.
“Looking for someone.”
With a deafening roar, the car shot forward like an arrow, speeding down the asphalt road.
The original novel had mentioned the name of the bar Gu Lanqiu frequented before his accident. Perhaps the author had been too lazy to come up with another setting, but later, the male and female leads had even had an unexpected encounter there. Because of this, Jiang Mengyu knew exactly where the bar was located.
She was on her way to find Gu Lanqiu. Meanwhile, Zhou Xinying had already arrived at the same bar.
She had come with friends to celebrate a birthday, dinner first, then a night out.
Zhou Xinying followed her group upstairs to their booth, which happened to face Gu Lanqiu’s direction. A casual glance revealed someone who looked strikingly like him.
She focused, it really was Gu Lanqiu.
Her gaze instinctively shifted to the person beside him. Wen Lingyi had her back turned, so Zhou Xinying couldn’t see her face, but she had a gut feeling this wasn’t Jiang Mengyu.
Her father had said Jiang Mengyu left with Gu Lanqiu.
Zhou Xinying found it odd. No matter what, Jiang Mengyu was still part of the Zhou family. Even if Gu Lanqiu wanted to thank her, letting her move into his home was going too far.
She wanted to confront Jiang Mengyu, but her messages went unanswered. As for Gu Lanqiu…
Zhou Xinying recalled being scolded by her father just days ago, and her work wasn’t going smoothly either. She knew this was Gu Lanqiu’s warning.
Xu Zeyan was a dead end for now, he was even more clueless than she was, still completely in the dark.
Zhou Xinying averted her eyes. The memory of the bag of pastries Jiang Mengyu had given her earlier surfaced. Even now, she couldn’t figure out why Jiang Mengyu had helped her.
Was it really just to avoid being dragged down?
On impulse, she pulled out her phone, snapped a discreet photo of Gu Lanqiu, and sent it to Jiang Mengyu.
[Zhou Xinying: I thought you and Gu Lanqiu were close?]
[Zhou Xinying: Why didn’t she take you out with her?]
By the time Jiang Mengyu arrived at the bar, it was already half past ten.
She opened the photo Zhou Xinying had sent her. Gu Lanqiu’s face was slightly blurred, so Jiang Mengyu focused on the first-floor stage visible in the background.
She didn’t even need to search for Gu Lanqiu’s location.
Jiang Mengyu put away her phone and went straight to the second floor.
Gu Lanqiu’s spot was easy to find, Jiang Mengyu spotted her at a glance. Her steps faltered briefly before she took two more steps forward, her gaze fixed intently on Gu Lanqiu.
Gu Lanqiu was a little drunk.
Perhaps sensing someone watching her, she leaned lazily against the sofa and cast a careless glance in Jiang Mengyu’s direction.
The bar was stuffy and warm. Gu Lanqiu had undone the top two buttons of her collar, her usually composed face tinged with a faint flush. Her expression was cool and distant, but her lips were plump and glossy from the alcohol.
Jiang Mengyu’s gaze drifted lower, landing on Gu Lanqiu’s hand, where slender fingers held a slim cigarette between them.
This was the first time Jiang Mengyu had seen Gu Lanqiu like this carefree, unrestrained, and exuding an air of decadence.
At first, Gu Lanqiu didn’t realize it was Jiang Mengyu. She glanced over and looked away, but out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the person hadn’t left. Frowning, she turned her head again, only to meet Jiang Mengyu’s inscrutable gaze.
Gu Lanqiu froze.
Wen Lingyi, oblivious, nudged her. “Lanqiu, had enough to drink? Want to call a couple of people over to play some games?”
Gu Lanqiu didn’t respond. Only then did Wen Lingyi notice something was off. She turned to follow Gu Lanqiu’s line of sight, muttering, “What are you looking at?”
Her words died in her throat.
Wen Lingyi sobered up instantly from the shock. “Meng… Mengyu, when did you get here?”
As she spoke, she stole a glance at Gu Lanqiu beside her.
Oh no. Jiang Mengyu couldn’t have heard what she just said, right?
They weren’t usually like this!
Jiang Mengyu gave Gu Lanqiu a long, deep look, then turned and walked away without a word.
Wen Lingyi swallowed hard. Yep, she was definitely pissed.
She nudged Gu Lanqiu. “Go after her, quick!”
Gu Lanqiu stubbed out her cigarette in the ashtray, her tone light. “Why should I?”
She hadn’t done anything wrong. She was just drinking. And even if she had, what right did Jiang Mengyu have to interfere?
They weren’t anything to each other.
Wen Lingyi rubbed her forehead. “Now’s not the time to be stubborn.”
Gu Lanqiu picked up her phone and unlocked it. She checked WeChat, no messages from Aunt Zhang.
So Jiang Mengyu had come alone?
Gu Lanqiu knew Jiang Mengyu could drive, but she was still injured. Shouldn’t she be resting instead of running around at night?
Wen Lingyi thought Gu Lanqiu really wasn’t going to do anything, but then the woman suddenly stood up. “I’m leaving.”
Wen Lingyi exhaled in relief, too preoccupied to tease Gu Lanqiu for her contradictory behavior. “Talk it out properly! No fighting!”
Gu Lanqiu didn’t look back, her figure quickly disappearing down the stairs.
Wen Lingyi wiped the cold sweat from her forehead. Weird, why was she so nervous?
But now that she thought about it, how had Jiang Mengyu known they were here?
Gu Lanqiu was wondering the same thing.
She asked a waiter about the direction Jiang Mengyu had left and guessed she must have gone to the underground parking garage, then turned and entered the elevator.
Jiang Mengyu walked slowly, as if waiting for Gu Lanqiu.
System 031: [Host, will Gu Lanqiu catch up?]
When they had left earlier, Gu Lanqiu had clearly been sitting motionless.
“She will.” Jiang Mengyu lowered her long lashes slightly, her tone firm.
