- Chapter 32.3 - The Cannon Fodder Alpha Secretly in Love with the Female Lead Omega (29)
It never crossed his mind to suspect Chi Jingyan. Despite knowing his daughter had many secrets, he believed her too young to orchestrate something so extreme.
The car sped toward the hospital.
Old Master Chi was still in the emergency room, while Third Uncle Chi had already been restrained. Rumor had it he had regained consciousness but was persistently proclaiming his innocence.
What innocence could he possibly claim?
The surveillance footage had captured everything clearly.
Chi Jingyan’s father stormed into the room, and soon, his furious shouts at Third Uncle Chi echoed out. Third Uncle Chi retaliated with equal venom.
As a junior, Chi Jingyan knew better than to interfere in the elders’ conflict. She simply stood to the side, listening quietly.
Before long, she heard hurried footsteps behind her. Glancing sideways, she saw Chi Jia approaching.
Chi Jia had clearly gotten wind of what had happened. Without a word, she tried to charge into the room, but Chi Jingyan swiftly intercepted her.
“Xiao Jia.”
Chi Jingyan’s expression was impassive. “The elders are speaking. It’s best not to disturb them.”
“Speaking?” That was hardly the word for it, her father was being bullied!
Chi Jia shot Chi Jingyan a hateful glare, her usually cheerful face devoid of any smile. Her eyes reddened as she stared at Chi Jingyan and enunciated each word, “You must be feeling pretty smug, huh?”
Chi Jia refused to believe Third Uncle Chi could do such a thing. Someone must have framed him!
And this whole affair likely had something to do with Chi Jingyan and her father, after all, they were the ones who despised Third Uncle Chi the most.
“You can eat carelessly, but you shouldn’t speak carelessly.” Chi Jingyan met her gaze unflinchingly. “Xiao Jia, your concern right now should be for Grandpa.”
“Grandpa has always doted on Third Uncle. How could Third Uncle be so cruel?”
As she spoke, Chi Jingyan sighed softly.
Chi Jia clenched her fists so tightly that her nails dug into her palms. “Grandfather must understand that my father didn’t truly mean to hurt him!”
Chi Jingyan’s gaze was icy. “Save those words for Grandfather.”
If the old man ever woke up, that is.
The group had waited outside the ward for hours before Chi Laozi was finally declared out of critical danger, though he remained unconscious.
Chi Jingyan was exhausted. If not for maintaining the facade of concern in front of others, she wouldn’t have wasted her time staying here.
Now that they had finally received word from the doctor, Chi’s mother also sighed in relief. “It’s late, Jingyan. You should go home and rest. Your father and I will stay here.”
Chi Jingyan rubbed her temples. “Alright.”
As she stepped toward the elevator, she ran into Chi Jia again.
Chi Jia watched coldly as Chi Jingyan entered the elevator. Just as the doors were about to close, she suddenly sneered, “Chi Jingyan, your luck won’t last forever.”
“You know exactly what you’ve done.”
“Sooner or later, the truth will come out.”
A faint twitch flickered in Chi Jingyan’s brow, but her expression remained unreadable. “Oh?”
“I’ll be waiting for your evidence.”
The elevator doors shut.
Only when Chi Jia’s face was completely out of sight did Chi Jingyan finally frown slightly. The sins she had committed were far too many which one was Chi Jia referring to?
She soon found out.
When she returned to her apartment, the living room lights were still on.
At a glance, she saw Jiang Mengyu sitting on the sofa.
Her head was slightly bowed, half her face obscured in the dim light. Chi Jingyan couldn’t make out her expression as she approached and asked, “Why aren’t you sleeping in the room?”
She had already texted Jiang Mengyu, telling her not to wait up.
But Jiang Mengyu didn’t answer. She simply lifted her head and stared fixedly at Chi Jingyan, her entire demeanor dark and oppressive.
Chi Jingyan immediately sensed something was wrong. She studied Jiang Mengyu’s expression carefully, the woman met her gaze unflinchingly, but the eyes that had once brimmed with tenderness were now utterly lifeless.
Chi Jingyan’s heart lurched.
Her fingers tightened imperceptibly. “Jiang Mengyu?”
“What’s wrong?”
Why wasn’t she speaking?
Jiang Mengyu’s lips curled slightly. Under Chi Jingyan’s watchful gaze, she finally spoke her first words of the night.
“Chi Jingyan… was it really you who saved me back then?”
For a moment, Chi Jingyan felt dazed. It had been so long since Jiang Mengyu had called her by her full name.
Jiang Mengyu always called her A-Yan, her voice soft and lingering, filled with an unmistakable tenderness.
At first, Chi Jingyan hadn’t liked hearing it, but over time, it had grown on her.
Now, hearing “Chi Jingyan” from Jiang Mengyu’s lips again felt like a lifetime ago.
Chi Jingyan stood frozen, silent.
She didn’t know how much Jiang Mengyu had discovered.
Who had told her? Chi Jia?
Jiang Mengyu’s eyes seemed to redden. Her lips pressed into a thin line, and her gaze bore into Chi Jingyan like a blade against her back.
Suppressing the panic rising in her chest, Chi Jingyan forced out a strained reply, “Why are you asking this?”
“You!”
“I saw it.” Jiang Mengyu cut her off. “The message Secretary Zhao sent you.”
Chi Jingyan felt as if she had been plunged into an icy abyss in an instant. She stared intently into Jiang Mengyu’s eyes. “You went through my computer?”
Although Chi Jingyan had long said that Jiang Mengyu could use the computer in the study, Jiang Mengyu had never entered the study when Chi Jingyan wasn’t home. The question had slipped out instinctively.
The moment the words left her mouth, she knew she was in trouble.
Sure enough, the next second, Chi Jingyan saw a mocking glint flash in Jiang Mengyu’s eyes. “I knew it.”
Her earlier statement was merely a bluff to test Chi Jingyan.
Chi Jingyan’s limbs had nearly gone numb, yet even now, she refused to admit it. “That’s not what I meant.”
“Why would you suspect it wasn’t me who saved you?”
“Did Chi Jia say something to you again?”
Chi Jingyan’s eyes reddened as well, her acting truly was impeccable. The disbelief and hurt in her gaze at being doubted looked utterly genuine. “Jiang Mengyu, you’d rather believe her than me?”
“Then tell me,” Jiang Mengyu closed her eyes briefly, her voice laced with suppressed emotion. “What exactly did you say to me that night?”
Chi Jingyan dug her nails into her palm. “I don’t remember.”
“Can you really have no recollection of something you did?” Exhaustion and disappointment flickered in Jiang Mengyu’s eyes, but more than anything, there was an icy chill.
“I never asked before because I trusted you. Besides, I thought with your pride, you’d never stoop to something like this.”
Jiang Mengyu’s words burned Chi Jingyan’s face with shame. Yet she had done exactly that.
But was it really her fault?
“Chi Jingyan.” Jiang Mengyu stood up, half a head taller than her. Now face-to-face, the sheer intensity of her presence nearly suffocated Chi Jingyan.
“Was it fun playing with me?”
“Watching me lose control like an idiot, bending over backward for you, did it make you feel accomplished?”
Jiang Mengyu’s accusations came one after another. Though she struggled to restrain her emotions, a trace of pain and hatred still seeped into her gaze.
That flicker of hatred left Chi Jingyan dizzy.
How could Jiang Mengyu, how could she look at her like that?
“I should’ve seen it sooner. From start to finish, this was all just the young miss’s little game.”
As she spoke, Jiang Mengyu yanked the necklace from her throat with such force that it left a deep red mark on her skin. She paid it no mind, her bloodshot eyes fixed on Chi Jingyan.
“After all, you only ever saw me as a rabid dog.”
“Who could ever take a dog seriously?”
