- Chapter 33.1 - The Cannon Fodder Alpha Secretly in Love with the Female Lead Omega (30)
“Chi Jingyan, let’s end things between us here.”
“Jiang Mengyu!” Chi Jingyan raised her voice to cut her off.
Jiang Mengyu’s words had truly hurt her.
Especially the way she tore off the necklace, it sent a pang of panic through Chi Jingyan’s heart.
From the day Chi Jingyan had placed that necklace around Jiang Mengyu’s neck, Jiang Mengyu had never taken it off, not even while bathing or sleeping. That alone spoke volumes about how much she treasured it. Yet now, Jiang Mengyu was willing to hurt herself just to rip it away.
Chi Jingyan lowered her gaze to the necklace in Jiang Mengyu’s hand. The pendant engraved with her name swayed faintly in the air, mirroring the turbulence in Chi Jingyan’s heart.
Under the dim light, the once-gleaming silver seemed to have lost its luster.
Chi Jingyan shut her eyes briefly. Her chest felt as if it had been filled with lead heavy, suffocating, making it hard to breathe normally. She could only dig her nails deep into her palms, using the pain to keep her mind clear.
For a long while, silence filled the room, broken only by the sound of their increasingly ragged breaths.
After what felt like an eternity, Chi Jingyan finally managed to steady herself. “What nonsense are you spouting now?”
Her eyes darted around the room, searching, but she found nothing out of the ordinary.
“Back then, it was you who insisted without a doubt that I was the one who saved you. And now, it’s you who’s just as adamant that it wasn’t me.”
“You’ve had your say on everything,” Chi Jingyan said, a cold smirk tugging at her lips. “But have you ever given me a chance to explain?”
Jiang Mengyu turned her face away, hiding her expression from Chi Jingyan. All Chi Jingyan could hear was the hoarse, muffled weight in her voice. “So you admit it? It wasn’t you who saved me?”
Chi Jingyan could tell Jiang Mengyu had no real evidence. Perhaps someone had whispered half-truths in her ear, planting seeds of doubt about what had really happened.
The realization eased the tension in Chi Jingyan’s chest, but outwardly, her anger only grew.
“Do you really trust me so little? Just because someone said something to you, you start doubting me?”
Jiang Mengyu remained unmoved. She turned back to face Chi Jingyan, her dark eyes unblinking, as if trying to peer straight into her soul.
“I just want a straight answer.”
“Was it really you who helped me that night?”
Chi Jingyan opened her mouth, as if to speak, but Jiang Mengyu didn’t give her the chance. For the first time, she was unyielding in front of Chi Jingyan.
“All you need to say is ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ That’s enough.”
She paused, her red-rimmed eyes trembling under the weight of too many emotions. “A-Yan, don’t lie to me.”
Chi Jingyan’s heart plummeted. She understood what Jiang Mengyu meant if she chose to deceive her again and was later found out, Jiang Mengyu would truly be done with her.
The biggest flaw in Chi Jingyan’s position was that she had no idea what had actually happened that night. If Jiang Mengyu pressed for details, she’d be left speechless, just like before.
But Chi Jingyan had also considered the possibility of this day coming.
She had put in so much effort for this. For her to admit now that she was actually an impostor would be far too risky.
So after only a moment of hesitation, Chi Jingyan once again made the wrong choice.
“Then what do you want me to say?” Chi Jingyan retorted. “I told you, I don’t remember.”
“You know how it is. During my sensitive periods, I tend to forget things easily. Maybe that night I was in one of those phases, and by the next morning, I’d forgotten everything.”
“If you still don’t believe me,” Chi Jingyan tilted her head slightly, her voice turning hoarse, “I did have Secretary Zhao investigate this matter. That’s why I reacted the way I did earlier.”
“Secretary Zhao has probably already sent over the documents. I can open them right in front of you can see for yourself.”
As she spoke, Chi Jingyan lowered her head and began rummaging through her bag for her phone.
She was grateful she had prepared evidence in advance. At the time, she had only thought of it as a precaution, never expecting it would come in handy so soon.
Jiang Mengyu remained silent as she watched Chi Jingyan hold the phone up to her. The screen displayed a blurry clip from a dashcam. At first, it seemed to be the driver speaking.
“Miss, there seems to be someone up ahead.”
“A girl, maybe?”
Then Chi Jingyan’s voice came through, sounding somewhat weary. “Who is it?”
“Not sure. She’s lying by the roadside, motionless.”
“Should I go check?”
There was a brief silence in the car before the sound of a door opening was heard. “I’ll go.”
Those last words were spoken by Chi Jingyan.
The video had no date stamp, but judging by the dark, grainy footage, it must have been late at night.
Seeing that Jiang Mengyu still showed no reaction after watching the video, Chi Jingyan grew uneasy. The footage didn’t capture anything about the surrounding environment could Jiang Mengyu really have noticed something off?
Half-explaining, half-probing, Chi Jingyan said, “I have no memory of this at all. If Secretary Zhao hadn’t sent me the video, I wouldn’t even have known I’d ever gotten out of the car.”
Jiang Mengyu remained silent.
Chi Jingyan’s confidence wavered further. What exactly did Jiang Mengyu mean by this?
Had she really slipped up somewhere?
After what felt like an eternity, she finally heard Jiang Mengyu murmur, “Is that so?”
“Chi Jingyan, have you ever once treated me as your equal?”
“What am I to you? A lunatic? Or a fool?”
“All these days, watching me lose myself in your lies, getting flustered and out of control over your casual teasing did you find it amusing?”
“Wait.” Chi Jingyan’s expression froze, as if turning to ice. “What exactly are you trying to say?”
Jiang Mengyu slowly reached out and brushed away a stray lock of hair from Chi Jingyan’s cheek. Her voice was low. “I never told you this.”
“But from the very beginning, I was the one who lied to you.”
“She never intended to save me. That night, I was the one who threw myself in front of her car. When she got out, she was furious she yelled at me. But in the end, she couldn’t bear to leave me with nothing and gave me some food.”
Chi Jingyan’s breath nearly stopped. So what? Had she outsmarted herself?
She didn’t dare to imagine what Jiang Mengyu must have felt when she took out the video earlier. Chi Jingyan only knew she was panicking her hands were trembling.
No wonder Jiang Mengyu had been so cold at first, yet so certain she would do such a warm-hearted thing. So, that so-called first encounter wasn’t as sweet and beautiful as Jiang Mengyu had described.
Her supposedly clever preparation had instead confirmed to Jiang Mengyu that she wasn’t the one from that night.
