- Chapter 32.2 - The Cannon Fodder Alpha Secretly in Love with the Female Lead Omega (29)
Jiang Mengyu had snatched Chi Jingyan’s first-place position.
Would the peaceful dynamic they had maintained over this period be shattered?
As it turned out, everyone had overthought it, the young mistress didn’t care in the slightest.
On the ride back, Chi Jingyan pinned Jiang Mengyu down on the backseat and kissed her. She loved the sensation of their lips and tongues entwined, as if she could reach Jiang Mengyu’s heart through the warmth of their bodies.
Jiang Mengyu almost never refused. Only when Chi Jingyan leaned in closer did she subtly reach out to steady the young mistress’s waist, ensuring she wouldn’t fall.
A faint glimmer of moisture lingered between their parted lips. Chi Jingyan’s gaze burned as she used her thumb to wipe away the trace of wetness from the corner of Jiang Mengyu’s mouth, murmuring with a low laugh, “Congratulations, top of the class.”
Jiang Mengyu looked up at the person sitting on her lap, her slightly parted lips still carrying a hint of breathlessness. “You’re not angry?”
Chi Jingyan clicked her tongue. “Why would I be angry?”
Did Jiang Mengyu really think she was that petty?
Far from being angry, Chi Jingyan was filled with an indescribable sense of pride.
Now everyone would know just how capable the little dog she had raised was, saving Jiang Mengyu from their constant disdain.
The mere thought of this made Chi Jingyan’s lips curl upward, though she quickly suppressed her smile.
Lately, Chi Jingyan’s mother had been subtly and not so subtly reminding her to keep her distance from Jiang Mengyu.
She had clearly already uncovered Jiang Mengyu’s identity.
If not for the people Chi Jingyan had sent to intercept her, her mother might have confronted Jiang Mengyu long ago.
Chi Jingyan didn’t want anyone disturbing them. After finally settling into a stable rhythm with Jiang Mengyu and seeing their relationship progress smoothly, she refused to let anyone ruin it.
Not even her own mother.
She leaned down to press another quick kiss to Jiang Mengyu’s lips. “I have a dinner engagement later, so I might be home late.”
“Alright.” Jiang Mengyu closed her eyes.
Chi Jingyan first dropped Jiang Mengyu off at the apartment building.
As Jiang Mengyu opened the car door to get out, for some reason, Chi Jingyan suddenly felt a pang of reluctance in her heart.
But she held it back. After all, Jiang Mengyu would be waiting for her at home, there was no need to rush this moment.
“I’ll be back soon. Wait for me,” Chi Jingyan reminded her one last time.
“Mhm.”
The car slowly pulled away. When it turned the corner, Chi Jingyan glanced out the window and saw Jiang Mengyu still standing in the distance, quietly watching.
An inexplicable unease welled up in Chi Jingyan’s heart.
Tonight was actually a dinner with the Chu family.
Both of Chi Jingyan’s parents were present, and Chu Muyao’s parents had come as well.
The atmosphere among the elders was harmonious, but between Chi Jingyan and Chu Muyao, neither spoke much to the other.
Chi Jingyan’s mother observed the expressions of Chu Muyao’s parents they likely still didn’t know about Chi Jingyan and Jiang Mengyu. She couldn’t help but sigh in relief.
Then she turned to Chi Jingyan, her brows furrowing again.
“Jingyan, we’ve almost finished eating,” Chi Jingyan’s mother patted her arm. “Why don’t you take Yaoyao out for a walk? Get some fresh air.”
“Young people must feel stifled sitting with us adults.”
She had found a suitable excuse for Chi Jingyan’s aloofness.
As expected, Chu Muyao’s parents didn’t suspect anything and smiled at their daughter. “Go on, have a good chat with Jingyan.”
The two stood up silently and, under the elders’ gazes, walked out of the private room side by side.
Behind the restaurant was a small garden with decent scenery, complete with a koi pond beneath an artificial hill.
They strolled along the garden’s pebbled path until, suddenly, Chu Muyao spoke up. “What are you thinking?”
Chi Jingyan turned to look at her. “Muyao, I don’t want to hide it from you.”
“You probably wouldn’t want to be engaged to an Alpha who already has someone in their heart.”
This might have been the first time Chi Jingyan openly admitted her feelings for Jiang Mengyu in front of someone else. Her expression was slightly uncomfortable, but she still explained patiently, “Just give me a little more time.”
Chu Muyao guessed she must be planning something. She sighed. “I don’t mean anything by it, it’s just…”
Just that she was afraid things might reach a point of no return.
Chi Jingyan studied her distant expression and, after a few seconds of silence, suddenly asked, “How are things between you and Li Qing?”
Chu Muyao was startled. Her cheeks flushed instantly, and her eyes darted away nervously. “W-what are you talking about?”
“Doesn’t she feel… exactly the way I think she does about you?” Chi Jingyan countered.
Her tone wasn’t harsh, there was even a faint hint of teasing in her expression. Seeing this, Chu Muyao’s racing heart gradually calmed.
“I don’t know.”
She didn’t know what Sister Li was thinking either.
“Something just occurred to me.” Chi Jingyan didn’t look at her anymore, turning her gaze to the koi in the pond instead. “Two years ago, when Li Qing went abroad, I received an anonymous text.”
The sender had urged her to cherish the person in front of her and not to betray her feelings.
At the time, Chi Jingyan had dismissed it as spam and forgotten about it after reading.
Chu Muyao was stunned upon hearing this. She hadn’t known about it.
So… had Sister Li liked her that early on?
Chu Muyao’s gaze held a hint of shyness, while Chi Jingyan remained silent. Though the two walked side by side, their hearts and thoughts were preoccupied with others.
Chi Jingyan knew that her parents had actually intended to finalize the engagement between her and Chu Muyao today. However, the matter had ultimately been left unresolved, quickly overshadowed by another incident.
Third Uncle Chi had attacked the family patriarch, Old Master Chi, leaving him severely injured and rushed to the emergency room.
When Chi Jingyan’s father received the news, he managed to maintain a facade of calm in front of the Chu family. But the moment he got into the car, his expression darkened.
Seated in the back, Chi Jingyan listened silently as her father berated Third Uncle Chi.
“I always knew Third Brother was a heartless, ungrateful wretch, but I never expected the dog would dare bare its fangs at its master.”
Her father let out a cold laugh. “Wasn’t the old man always treating him like a treasure?”
“Getting stabbed twice by his own precious son, that must be quite the bitter pill to swallow.”
Due to past grievances, Chi Jingyan’s father harbored deep resentment toward Old Master Chi and felt nothing but disdain for Third Uncle Chi. All these years of fatherly affection and brotherly harmony had merely been a testament to their acting skills.
Now, hearing that Old Master Chi was critically injured and at the hands of Third Uncle Chi her father felt nothing but satisfaction.
Yet, he couldn’t help but feel puzzled.
Though Third Uncle Chi was unhinged, he had always groveled before Old Master Chi. How could he suddenly do something so irrational?
