- Chapter 30.1 - The Cannon Fodder Alpha Secretly in Love with the Female Lead Omega (27)
“I want you to kiss me.”
Jiang Mengyu noticed the momentary tension in Chi Jingyan. She turned her head to follow Chi Jingyan’s gaze behind her and, unsurprisingly, locked eyes with Chu Muyao.
The Omega’s expression wasn’t sharp. Rather than anger, her reaction seemed more like a calm acceptance of the inevitable.
Seeing Jiang Mengyu staring intently at her, Chu Muyao couldn’t help but press her lips together. She felt she should be the one standing her ground, yet under Jiang Mengyu’s gaze, she inexplicably felt like an intruder.
Her fingers tightened. “You two…”
Jiang Mengyu straightened up, while Chi Jingyan remained seated, both silently watching Chu Muyao, causing her voice to trail off.
This was the first time she’d experienced such a situation. Even though she’d suspected it deep down, now that it was happening, Chu Muyao didn’t know what to say.
A self-deprecating smile tugged at her lips. What could she say? What right did she have to question Chi Jingyan?
Strictly speaking, there was nothing between them just an unspoken understanding between their families.
After a long silence, it was Jiang Mengyu who finally spoke up. “Should I leave?”
“No need.”
Chi Jingyan stood up at last, taking a step forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Jiang Mengyu, though her words were directed at Chu Muyao.
“I’m sorry, Muyao.”
No matter what, she shouldn’t have been involved with Jiang Mengyu while still seeing Chu Muyao.
Chi Jingyan knew her behavior was wrong, and she admitted it without hesitation.
Chu Muyao pressed her lips together. “You don’t owe me an apology.”
Her tone carried a hint of mockery. “After all, I’m nothing to you.”
Chi Jingyan showed no reaction to this, and Jiang Mengyu’s expression remained calm. Only System 031 was utterly devastated.
[How can there be nothing between you?!]
Chu Muyao was Chi Jingyan’s official love interest!!
System 031 truly hadn’t expected its host to go this far. The destined Alpha-Omega pair, who should have been fated for each other, now had the female lead Omega declaring they had no relationship while the female lead Alpha not only didn’t refute it but tacitly agreed.
System 031 felt like the sky was falling.
Watching the plot deviation value slowly rise from 70 to 75, System 031 felt a strange sense of relief amidst its numbness.
At least it only went up by five points.
It didn’t skyrocket to 100.
Jiang Mengyu, oblivious to its relief, silently observed the scene. Finally, as Chu Muyao stepped toward Chi Jingyan, she spoke softly, “I’ll wait outside for you two.”
Chi Jingyan glanced at her, as if wanting to say something, but ultimately stayed silent.
When Jiang Mengyu left the art room, she considerately closed the door behind her.
System 031 suddenly had an epiphany. [Wait! Host, did you leave the door open on purpose earlier?]
Otherwise, how could Chu Muyao have appeared at the doorway so suddenly, without making a sound?
Jiang Mengyu: “I don’t remember.”
System 031 didn’t believe a word of it now.
It must have been intentional!
With the host’s sharp senses, she had probably noticed Chu Muyao following her long ago. That’s why she deliberately left the door slightly ajar and used her body to block Chi Jingyan’s line of sight. So, it wasn’t until Chu Muyao pushed the door open that Chi Jingyan belatedly realized her presence.
Crafty host!
Jiang Mengyu didn’t admit anything. For now, only one thing occupied her mind, the food Chi Jingyan had brought smelled delicious, and she was feeling a little hungry.
Jiang Mengyu didn’t go far. She leaned her elbows on the railing, gazing down at the scattered groups of students below.
It was already late March, with just over two months left until the college entrance exams and just over two months until her mission would end.
System No. 031 prayed to the heavens and even resorted to superstitious rituals, hoping Buddha would bless the host to behave herself for these remaining months and spare its electronic heart from another wave of challenges.
Listening to its wails in her mind, Jiang Mengyu’s lips curled slightly in an unconscious smile. Before the amusement could fade, a familiar female voice suddenly rang in her ears.
“How pitiful.”
Jiang Mengyu didn’t turn around, letting Chi Jia approach her leisurely.
Chi Jia stopped beside Jiang Mengyu, studying her expression with interest. “You’re so devoted to Chi Jingyan, it’s almost tragic.”
“Whenever Chu Muyao is around, you’re always the one who gets left behind.”
Chi Jia had followed Chu Muyao here, expecting to witness some drama. But to her surprise, the three of them showed no signs of arguing. Jiang Mengyu, in particular, was “magnanimous” without a word, she turned and walked away, leaving the other two alone.
“Jiang Mengyu, is this really what you want?”
Jiang Mengyu remained silent, her lashes lowering slightly. To Chi Jia, she looked as if she was suppressing some hidden sorrow.
Chi Jia smirked. “If you keep clinging to Chi Jingyan, this will happen countless more times.”
She didn’t believe Jiang Mengyu could endure it forever.
Once or twice was manageable, but if this continued, sooner or later, Jiang Mengyu and Chi Jingyan would have a complete falling out.
Jiang Mengyu still didn’t respond. No matter what Chi Jia said, it was as if she hadn’t heard a word. But Chi Jia knew she was listening.
“By the way,” Chi Jia said, seeing that Jiang Mengyu wasn’t engaging, and losing interest in provoking her further, she smoothly changed the subject.
“That ‘life-saving favor’ you mentioned last night, I’m really curious. Could you tell me more about it?”
Chi Jia leaned back against the railing, tilting her head as she observed Jiang Mengyu. “Have you ever watched TV dramas?”
“At least 80% of the protagonists mistake someone else for their savior.”
She paused, her tone meaningful. “How can you be so sure it was Chi Jingyan who helped you?”
Jiang Mengyu finally deigned to glance at her, her gaze indifferent. “I’m not a protagonist, and I’m not blind.”
Chi Jia scoffed lightly. “That’s debatable.”
Slowly, she raised a hand to cover the lower half of her face, her previously curved eyes now straightened. “Take another look at me.”
“Do I look like Chi Jingyan now?”
Jiang Mengyu glanced at her sideways.
Chi Jia usually wore a smile, while Chi Jingyan was mostly expressionless, so most people wouldn’t think the two sisters looked alike.
But after all, they were cousins.
At that moment, Chi Jia mimicked Chi Jingyan’s habit of suppressing her smile, and her eyes instantly became at least eighty percent similar to Chi Jingyan’s.
Seeing Jiang Mengyu tacitly acknowledge her words, Chi Jia deliberately maintained this posture and leaned closer to her. “If you just like this face, I can do it too.”
“I’m even gentler than Chi Jingyan, and I don’t have any childhood sweetheart Omegas around me.”
Jiang Mengyu met her gaze calmly. Chi Jingyan rarely smiled in front of her either, but Jiang Mengyu could always discern the shifts in her emotions through her eyes.
As for Chi Jia before her though she was smiling, her gaze was indifferent. Compared to Chi Jingyan’s surface-level aloofness, Chi Jia truly saw Jiang Mengyu as nothing more than an amusing toy.
Jiang Mengyu averted her eyes. She didn’t speak, but the refusal and mockery in her gaze were unmistakable.
Chi Jia wasn’t offended. “There are plenty of people in this world who look alike. What if you really mistook her for someone else?”
“I’m also someone who loves helping others. Maybe it was me who saved you?”
Her words were mostly teasing after all, whether she had saved anyone or not, she knew best.
Chi Jia didn’t think Chi Jingyan was the type of warm-hearted Alpha, and she herself wasn’t much better.
Jiang Mengyu remained silent, and Chi Jia soon lost interest. “Then just tell me when exactly Chi Jingyan helped you. That’s fine, right?”
Of course, Jiang Mengyu wouldn’t reveal the specific time. She frowned slightly and turned to leave.
Chi Jia was taken aback. “Where are you going?”
Jiang Mengyu: “To find a quieter place.”
Chi Jia: “…”
Chi Jia gritted her teeth inwardly, this woman actually found her noisy!
Outside the art studio, the two parted on bad terms, and the atmosphere inside wasn’t much better.
Chi Jingyan had considered how to bring this up with Chu Muyao, but she hadn’t expected that before she could confess everything, Chu Muyao would first witness her intimate moment with Jiang Mengyu.
Yet Chi Jingyan felt little panic. She stood facing Chu Muyao, both of them composed.
Chu Muyao didn’t ask when they had gotten together. She simply studied Chi Jingyan’s features carefully before finally murmuring, “So what we had is null and void now, right?”
Chi Jingyan: “I’m sorry.”
Chu Muyao shook her head. A trace of melancholy settled in her heart, but more than that, she felt lost about her years of persistence. At the same time, she was surprised to realize that instead of sadness, she actually felt a sense of relief.
Chi Jingyan’s heart had never been with her. Rather than realizing it too late when things were beyond repair, it was better to cut her losses now.
With that thought, Chu Muyao exhaled softly. “Then let it be. I’ll explain it to my family.”
She paused before asking, “Have you figured out how to tell Uncle and Aunt?”
She wasn’t referring to the annulment of their verbal engagement, but how Chi Jingyan planned to explain to her parents that she wanted to be with an Alpha.
Chi Jingyan pressed her lips together. “That’s what I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Muyao, I need to ask you for a favor.”
Chi Jia left soon after. Jiang Mengyu waited outside the art studio for a while longer before finally seeing Chu Muyao appear at the door.
Chu Muyao’s expression was somewhat inscrutable. After seeing Jiang Mengyu, she didn’t leave immediately but instead turned and walked toward her.
This was the first time in a long while that Jiang Mengyu had been alone with the female lead Omega. She still remembered how, at the very beginning, Chu Muyao had seemed eager to avoid her at all costs.
Chu Muyao wasn’t sure what to say either. She felt she had a lot to say, but in the end, she only asked softly, “Was everything you said about liking me before all a lie?”
Jiang Mengyu looked into Chu Muyao’s eyes earnestly. “I love A-Yan deeply.”
That one sentence was enough to explain everything.
Chu Muyao gave a quiet hum. “I understand.”
