“I know.” Jiang Mengyu had nothing more to say to him. As long as she didn’t do anything to harm Chi Jingyan, Zhou Heng wouldn’t deliberately make things difficult for her.
Zhou Heng nodded. “Go on up, then.”
Only after Jiang Mengyu had left did he compile a report on her performance that day and send it to Chi Jingyan.
Chi Jingyan didn’t have time to open the report Zhou Heng had sent her until she returned home in the evening.
She didn’t have evening self-study sessions, so she was dismissed at six in the afternoon. Chi Jingyan went to the company first and was busy until nearly eight before heading back to her apartment.
In the car, she checked the messages Zhou Heng had sent.
Zhou Heng hadn’t exaggerated anything, but between the lines, Chi Jingyan could easily sense his admiration for Jiang Mengyu.
A few videos were attached below the report.
Chi Jingyan’s finger hovered over the videos. After a few seconds, she lightly tapped to play one.
Jiang Mengyu’s deep, enchanting face appeared on the phone screen. She held a gun in her hand, her expression serious and cold, her posture as straight and unyielding as a pine tree.
With the sound of a gunshot, Jiang Mengyu slowly lowered her arm. At the very end of the video, she cast a distant glance toward the camera, her gaze almost seemed to pierce through the screen, as if trying to see Chi Jingyan behind it.
Chi Jingyan instinctively tightened her grip on the phone.
Jiang Mengyu’s eyes reminded Chi Jingyan of the moment she had been marked by her. Her gaze had been just like this dark, unfathomable, and laced with a hint of ruthless madness.
Chi Jingyan’s long lashes trembled slightly. She took a deep breath and then silently put her phone away.
By the time she returned to the apartment, Jiang Mengyu had already finished showering. As soon as Chi Jingyan stepped into the living room, she saw Jiang Mengyu emerge from the kitchen, holding a cup of honey water.
“You’re back,” Jiang Mengyu said softly.
Chi Jingyan’s hands paused briefly as she took off her coat, but she quickly regained her composure and tossed her school blazer onto the sofa. “What are you doing?”
“Haven’t you been having stomach issues these past two days?” Jiang Mengyu said, handing the honey water to Chi Jingyan.
Chi Jingyan didn’t take it. She stared coldly at Jiang Mengyu. “How did you know?”
Her tone was laced with suspicion and scrutiny.
Jiang Mengyu fell silent for a moment. She knew Chi Jingyan wasn’t asking how she knew about her stomach issues but how she knew Chi Jingyan would return at this exact time.
“Old Liu told me,” she replied quietly.
Old Liu was Chi Jingyan’s bodyguard and driver.
“Hah.” Chi Jingyan let out a cold laugh. “You’re quite impressive, winning over the people around me so quickly.”
“It’s not about winning them over,” Jiang Mengyu said, looking steadily at her. “I just want to take better care of you.”
A familiar wave of irritation surged in Chi Jingyan’s chest. Perhaps she had already felt it the moment she opened the door and saw Jiang Mengyu walking out with the cup now, it had simply reached its breaking point.
“Do you not understand human language?”
Chi Jingyan’s voice was icy and cutting. “I told you, I don’t need you to do these things.”
The relationship between them wasn’t close enough for this. Chi Jingyan didn’t need Jiang Mengyu’s concern.
“All you need to do is be a good bodyguard be available when I call. That’s enough.”
She paused, then added coldly, “When I don’t call for you, act like you’re already dead.”
“Don’t do these unnecessary things. I don’t need them.”
If Jiang Mengyu was trying to play the long game, slowly wearing her down, she was sorely mistaken. Chi Jingyan wasn’t falling for it.
She was indeed ruthless enough, whether towards others or herself. The moment she realized she might be influenced by pheromones and had unwittingly developed a bit more concern for Jiang Mengyu, Chi Jingyan swiftly cut through the entanglement. She reminded herself and dashed Jiang Mengyu’s hopes in one stroke.
Yet, she still remembered just how unhinged the person before her could be. Worried about pushing her to the brink, Chi Jingyan ultimately refrained from saying anything harsher.
“As long as you listen to me, you won’t be short of benefits,” she said, averting her gaze.
Jiang Mengyu stared deeply at Chi Jingyan’s profile, her eyes lingering over her brows, eyes, and lips.
Perhaps because the truth was already laid bare, Jiang Mengyu held nothing back as she murmured softly, “The thing I want most, you can’t give it to me.”
Chi Jingyan clenched her fingers. She knew exactly what Jiang Mengyu meant.
“Anything but that. I can promise you anything else.”
Jiang Mengyu fell silent.
The living room was quiet. Chi Jingyan could only hear her own breathing. She didn’t look at Jiang Mengyu’s reaction, but she knew the other woman was staring straight at her. That gaze lingered on her face for a long time scorching, sticky, laden with an indescribable, hidden emotion.
Chi Jingyan pretended not to notice.
Only after a long while did she hear Jiang Mengyu speak in a low voice, “Zhou Heng said my performance has been acceptable.”
The words seemed abrupt, but Chi Jingyan inexplicably understood her meaning. “You want to go back to school?”
Jiang Mengyu countered with a question instead of answering, “Shouldn’t a bodyguard stick close twenty-four seven?”
Zhou Heng had actually suggested the same.
With only three months left until the college entrance exams, since Chi Jingyan would eventually allow Jiang Mengyu to return to school anyway, it made more sense to wait until after the exams to focus on training. Jiang Mengyu’s current skills were more than enough to protect Chi Jingyan, especially since she had others watching over her as well.
After a moment of thought, Chi Jingyan studied Jiang Mengyu’s expression. Seeing nothing unusual in her calm gaze, she gave a slight nod. “Fine.”
Jiang Mengyu’s desire to return to school probably wasn’t for Chu Muyao’s sake.
The next morning, Jiang Mengyu followed Chi Jingyan to school.
It was only after arriving that Jiang Mengyu learned Chi Jingyan had arranged for her to be in the same class meaning she would now be classmates with the two protagonists.
On System 031’s panel, the mission progress suddenly surged to 50%, while the plot deviation value dropped to 35.
Seeing the plot derailed to this extent, System 031 was deeply troubled. But with half the mission already completed, it couldn’t help but feel a flicker of joy.
[Host!] System 031 chirped cheerfully, [All we need to do now is attend classes obediently, get the diploma in a few months, and the mission will be complete!]
It could almost taste victory.
Who would’ve thought that the host’s chaotic maneuvers would actually steer the mission back on track?
Yet, recalling the host’s usual penchant for unorthodox methods, System 031 wavered. But since Chi Jingyan had already rejected her so firmly, surely the host couldn’t interfere with the original plot anymore, right?
Jiang Mengyu neither confirmed nor denied it.
She and Chi Jingyan were wearing identical school uniforms, walking one after the other toward the fifth floor, drawing numerous glances along the way.
Chi Jingyan was a well-known figure at S High, and Jiang Mengyu was no less infamous except the former had an excellent reputation, while the latter was notorious for being vicious and foolish.
“Didn’t Jiang Mengyu offend Chi Jingyan and get expelled?”
“Why is she following Chi Jingyan around?”
Those who knew the details were puzzled. Logically, Chi Jingyan should despise Jiang Mengyu, how could the two of them be walking together?
Under the weight of everyone’s varied stares, Jiang Mengyu recalled the time she first arrived in this world. Back then, she had similarly slunk away from school under the scrutiny of countless eyes.
She had vowed then that one day, she would return openly and proudly.
And now, here she was.
Chi Jingyan didn’t miss the murmurs around them. She glanced sideways at Jiang Mengyu, and seeing that she remained unaffected, she averted her gaze again.
Then again, with Jiang Mengyu’s thick skin, the judgment of outsiders probably meant nothing to her.
Jiang Mengyu noticed Chi Jingyan’s brief look. Staring at the figure walking ahead of her, a fleeting, improbable thought crossed her mind.
Could Chi Jingyan actually be… worried about her?
Though the people they encountered along the way were curious, no one dared to approach and ask. However, when Jiang Mengyu followed Chi Jingyan into Classroom 9, the room erupted instantly.
“Jiang Mengyu?!”
Jiang Mengyu turned toward the voice, a round-faced girl whose identity as an Alpha was betrayed by the inhibitor collar around her neck.
Xie Xun strode forward under Jiang Mengyu’s gaze, her eyes fixed on Jiang Mengyu, though her words were directed at Chi Jingyan.
“Chi-jie, what’s…”
She jerked her chin toward Jiang Mengyu.
Why would Chi Jingyan bring this nuisance into their classroom?!
As for why Xie Xun was so certain Jiang Mengyu had been brought here by Chi Jingyan wasn’t it obvious?
Without Chi Jingyan’s say-so, who would dare let Jiang Mengyu back into the school?
Not to mention, the backpack Jiang Mengyu was carrying was unmistakably Chi Jingyan’s. Xie Xun was positive, she couldn’t possibly mistake it!
Chi Jingyan had no intention of explaining. “Hm.”
What did “hm” mean?!
Xie Xun was practically clawing at her own chest in frustration. She wanted to know what had happened these past few days, how could Chi Jingyan suddenly decide to forgive Jiang Mengyu, letting bygones be bygones?
But that wasn’t right, Jiang Mengyu hadn’t even been in their class before.
What the hell was going on?!
Even as Jiang Mengyu set down Chi Jingyan’s backpack and began tidying up an empty desk at the back of the classroom, Xie Xun still couldn’t wrap her head around it.
Just like that, Jiang Mengyu was now her classmate?
She turned to look at the person beside her. Chi Jingyan’s expression was as calm as ever, Xie Xun couldn’t decipher what she was thinking.
Her heart itched like a cat was scratching at it.
After struggling to hold back, Xie Xun finally couldn’t resist whispering, “Chi-jie… does Chu Muyao know about this?”
Chi Jingyan lowered her lashes slightly. “She’ll find out.”
Speak of the devil.
No sooner had Chi Jingyan spoken than Chu Muyao appeared at the classroom door.
At first, she didn’t notice Jiang Mengyu was also there until she saw the strange expressions on everyone’s faces. Following their gazes, Chu Muyao’s expression froze momentarily when she looked over.
“Jiang Mengyu?”
Instinctively, she turned to check Chi Jingyan’s reaction, only to meet her eyes directly. Seeing the calmness in Chi Jingyan’s gaze, Chu Muyao felt an inexplicable sense of inevitability as if she had expected this all along.
She might not be the sharpest, but when it came to certain things, she was surprisingly perceptive.
As early as that night at the bar, Chu Muyao had noticed that Chi Jingyan’s attitude toward Jiang Mengyu was somewhat unusual. Although Chi Jingyan’s reactions had been calm from start to finish, Chu Muyao couldn’t shake the feeling that she was observing Jiang Mengyu.
Later, when Jiang Mengyu disappeared along with Chi Jingyan, Chu Muyao wasn’t without her suspicions. But when she brought it up yesterday, Chi Jingyan’s expression remained unchanged, finally putting Chu Muyao’s doubts to rest.
Yet now, it seemed her earlier suspicions had been correct all along.
Chu Muyao bit her lip, a pang of disappointment settling in her heart. It wasn’t because of Jiang Mengyu’s appearance, it was because Chi Jingyan could have simply told her the truth. Why had she deliberately kept it from her?
Was Chi Jingyan worried she would refuse?
Chu Muyao didn’t dare dwell too deeply on the implications.
She was afraid she might discover that, in Chi Jingyan’s heart now, Jiang Mengyu held a higher place than she did.
Lowering her gaze, Chu Muyao no longer looked at Chi Jingyan yet Chi Jingyan continued to watch her.
As for Jiang Mengyu, from beginning to end, her eyes remained fixed solely on Chi Jingyan, not sparing Chu Muyao so much as a glance.
This bizarre scene left everyone momentarily stunned.
Wasn’t Jiang Mengyu supposed to like Chu Muyao?
Why was she staring at Chi Jingyan?
